transforming lives

Transformation starts with a step. Toward enrichment, growth and nurturing. The light of knowledge and the thrill of discovery. Potential fulfilled and possibility made real. Walk into Westmark, and watch the clouds clear — the future looks brighter than ever. Learning is different here. In the classroom, on the stage and on the field, our students push past old limits and reach for success. They have what it takes, and we have what they need: a warm and stimulating environment that turns struggle to strength and challenge to opportunity.

At Westmark, young learners become seasoned communicators. They think critically and self-advocate effectively; develop new interests and cultivate imagination; make plans and make friends; embrace their community and explore the world. This is where motivation takes root. Welcome to Westmark — a singular space that builds character and confidence; a landscape to transform and be transformed; a place where dreamers become doers and doers make dreams come true.

This Is Westmark We believe in setting goals and breaking boundaries. Our philosophy is simple: leverage skill and experience to transform young learners and help them thrive. The Westmark environment is unique — a community of students, families, teachers, administrators, mentors and counselors who support each other and partner to meet individual needs. They come together to create something remarkable: a place that sparks confidence, celebrates differences and makes education fun. Our Expected Schoolwide Learning Results Westmark School students exhibit self-confidence/ self-esteem and exemplify literacy as they become:

Achieving Our Goals, 2012-13 Every year, Westmark’s head of school collaborates with the board of trustees to establish ambitious goals that enable us to focus our energies and track our ongoing success. For the 2012-13 school year, our overarching goal was to transform the Westmark experience, across various areas of the school community. This effort toward transformation was a resounding success on all levels, with far-reaching impact on students, parents, faculty and staff. COMPREHENSIVE INTEGRATION OF OUR 1:1 IPAD PROGRAM resulted in increased use of assistive and educational technology, further enhancing our individualized instruction based on student need.

LOWER AND MIDDLE SCHOOL ADVISORY helped students connect with their school community and provided a platform to advocate for themselves, explore their identity and begin to understand their unique learning profiles.

CURRICULUM MAPPING provided clear guidelines at each grade level that support our college preparatory mission. DIVERSITY INITIATIVES enhanced our ability to create a vibrant, dynamic and inclusive environment, amongst staff, faculty, student and parent body.

STUDENT LIFE engaged students at all grade levels with expanded offerings and activities including athletics, arts, and service, drawing on our students’ affinities and individual pillars of strength. This growth and expansion of activities beyond the classroom fostered community, awareness, confidence and strong relationships amongst our students. A ROBUST PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM fostered opportunities for growth and expertise, and provided shared experiences for faculty and staff across disciplines.

ADVANCEMENT EFFORTS provided critical funding toward many of Westmark’s signature programs, contributed toward financial aid, heightened the Westmark brand and improved both internal and external communications.

“ I believe sending my daughter to Westmark was the best decision I have ever made for her. She has grown into a confident and selfsufficient young woman, and my family gives Westmark a lot of credit for that. She became a different person while attending Westmark, and I will forever be grateful for all that Westmark has done for her.” —Parent of past student

Our Mission Westmark School inspires students with language-based learning differences who possess academic potential and personal promise to build on their strengths and prepare for a successful college experience.

A Year Worth Celebrating Westmark has a rich history of improving student outcomes and changing people’s lives and indeed, the 2012-2013 school year continued that tradition. Our campus flourished. Our students shined. The common denominator: a drive toward personal transformation and a commitment to academic success. With activities for students, parents, families and the community at large, the year kicked off with inspirational and entertaining guest speakers like author and activist Jonathan Mooney and the Agua Caliente band of Cahuilla Indians; Lower, Middle and Upper School grade level experiential learning trips with Naturalists at Large and Fulcrum Adventures; and service learning programs with L.A. Family Housing and the San Fernando Valley Rescue Mission. Special parent and family events like the Lower School Family Picnic, New Parent Reception, Senior Family College Dinner and Back to School Parent Celebration helped create a strong sense of community cohesiveness and welcomed first-timers into the Westmark fold. Other fall highlights included:

Homecoming 2012 The Westmark Lions rang it in with Spirit Week, game booths and an Upper School Dance.

Parent Education A fascinating panel on Understanding Your Child’s Neuropsychological Evaluation gave parents new tools for encouraging student accomplishment. Outdoor Ed Westmark middle schoolers enjoyed the great outdoors with a trip to Camp Hess Kramer in Malibu.

Travel Our 8th graders visited Washington, D.C., seniors took a trip to New York City and our 5th graders spent the night soaking up the natural beauty of the beaches in Malibu. College Prep Westmark 10th and 11th graders traveled to the National College Fair; seniors participated in a panel on college readiness and came together to celebrate their successes on National College Decision Day.

Experiential Learning Upper School students inaugurated WestLAB (Westmark: Learning About Business), a new hands-on program exposing students to a variety of professional opportunities.

worked voter polls throughout L.A. County.

Social Activities Friday Fun Day came to the Lower School; a Middle School mixer got students talking; and 12th graders enjoyed Grad Nite.

Athletics The girls varsity volleyball and Middle School boys football teams competed in CIF and VCAL playoffs, respectively.

Parent Involvement The Westmark Parent Association planned their annual gala, themed Let’s Groove Tonight.

Civic Involvement Our seniors held a mock presidential debate and

Arts Westmark students mounted a production of The Last Night of Ballyhoo and showcased their musical talents at the Snowflake concert.

6

Our spring semester was equally a success. A presentation on Affording College empowered students and parents to plan for their next stage of development. Leadership & Service Day enabled students from the Middle School to help individuals and families in need. Upper School students hosted a winter dance and participated in College Information Night. Westmark students distinguished themselves in other ways, as well:

Head of School Westmark students often experience personal transformations once they arrive here, developing into confident learners and critical thinkers who support their communities. The 2012-2013 school year was no exception, and in fact, marked the culmination of another kind of transformation as well — one that resulted directly from our capital campaign, Transformation: The Campaign for Westmark School, as well as from the generous support of our annual giving program. When we launched the capital campaign, we envisioned a physical transformation of our campus — into a state-of-the-art, fully equipped facility, offering our students a full array of arts, athletics and technology to inspire and develop their passions. And what a transformation it has been! I am humbled by, and grateful to, the supporters and generous donors who made it possible. Their dedication of time and resources has greatly enhanced the lives of our students, parents, families and community. Thank you also to those who supported our 20122013 Annual Fund, enabling us to continue our signature programs and add new ones, and supplementing our curriculum and extracurricular offerings with much-needed equipment and technology. Thanks to all of you — our partners in educational excellence — our wonderful campus now boasts three new, state-of-the-art buildings housing

science labs, a TV studio, an art room, additional classrooms wired for the 21st century and equipped with Smartboards, a wonderful athletics field and a new sports court. Westmark faculty embraced the technology advances and tools, implemented one of the first-ever one-to-one iPad programs, and now deliver instruction via laptops and Smartboards. It is also through your support that we are able to retain and attract our highly trained and experienced faculty. We have grown our student life program to encompass comprehensive service and experiential learning, with students in all grade levels participating in community service projects and outdoor educational experiences. And we now boast a robust lineup of after school enrichment, athletics and arts opportunities that build on the strengths of each student and provide opportunities for them to grow and succeed, both in and outside of the classroom. Thank you for being such an integral part of our transformation. You have laid the foundation for a future of promise, driving us forward in our mission to inspire our students, build on their strengths and prepare them for future success.

Chairman of the Board Dear Westmark Families, Friends and Supporters, There is no other school like Westmark, certainly not in the Greater Los Angeles Area — nor, I would argue, well beyond our city’s vast boundaries. This place is special, and I am so grateful for everything you’ve done to support Westmark in its vital mission to educate and inspire students challenged with learning differences. It is hard for many of us to remember — or imagine, for those who have most recently joined Westmark — what our campus looked like before the construction of the three stateof-the-art buildings that now house most of our Middle and Upper School classrooms and arts and science facilities, or where our children played before there was a sports court or a “Montgomery Field.” This physical reshaping of our campus would not have been possible without your extraordinary support of Westmark’s Transformation campaign. I speak on behalf of the entire Board of Trustees in saying we are mindful every day of the generosity and commitment of everyone who made all of this happen. In conjunction with the capital campaign’s success, our Annual Fund has made — and each year continues to make — an enormous contribution to our school’s operations. Your generosity has allowed us to attract and retain an exceptional faculty; evolve our technology program; enhance our sports and arts offerings; and expand financial aid in order to make Westmark affordable to those most in need. Furthermore, your participation in this annual effort — at whatever level — is a critical factor for foundations, which consider parent financial involvement in evaluating schools for potential grants. Truly every gift, no matter the size, makes a difference and is greatly appreciated.

8

A special note of thanks is due to my predecessor, Jamie Montgomery. During his seven year tenure as Trustee, six as Board Chair, Jamie not only spearheaded the Transformation campaign but also championed our Annual Fund and other special purpose fund-raising efforts; oversaw the search that resulted in the hiring of our esteemed Head of School, Muir Meredith; was instrumental in helping the school build its student life, college counseling, technology and other essential programs; and played a critical role in gaining CAIS eligibility for Westmark. For all of this and so much more, the entire Board of Trustees joins me in thanking Jamie for his selfless dedication of time, talent, vision and leadership. When I think about Westmark’s bright future, I am inspired by our recent past — all we have accomplished and what that has meant for so many young people struggling with learning differences; the opportunities that have been created; the potential that has been realized; the talents that have been revealed; the lives that have been changed. To all of you who have played a role in facilitating these extraordinary achievements — well done, and many thanks! With heartfelt appreciation from the entire Board of Trustees,

“ My two years at Westmark not only helped me learn ways to succeed in school but also helped

me believe in myself… For the first time, I felt I could achieve anything that I put my mind to. I had learned how to be successful on my own, advocate for myself and trust my ability. Working through my learning challenges not only made me a stronger human being, but made me into the proud and independent student I am today.” —Past Middle School Student

Learn the Difference At Westmark, transformation makes everything possible Westmark stands apart. Since our founding in 1983, we have helped children in grades three through 12 overcome language-based learning differences, transforming outcomes and advancing their behavioral, cognitive and emotional development. Our strength-based curriculum empowers students to discover their personal academic style and pursue their own interests, igniting a love of learning and sowing the seeds of lifelong success.

“ At Westmark, I’ve learned how to overcome my learning challenges. I can organize my assignments. The teachers use different learning strategies that I will be able to use in the future and when I go to college and beyond.” —Current Upper School student At Westmark, our students soar. We offer a multi-sensory, whole-child approach to education designed to meet the specific needs of every child. By customizing a plan that maps out the neurodevelopmental strengths, affinities and areas of challenge for each Westmark student, we equip them with the tools to thrive in college and beyond. Students from across Southern California come to Westmark to join a diverse, resourcerich community offering intensive intervention in areas ranging from reading, writing and oral expression to study habits, decision-making and time management. Westmark provides students with a comprehensive, college preparatory educational experience that includes competitive athletics; exceptional performing, visual and digital arts programs; service and experiential learning; leadership opportunities; and a rich offering of after school enrichment. Westmark’s curriculum and teaching methodologies are research-based and supported by state-of-the-art assistive technology. Our renowned one-to-one iPad program (which

provides every student an iPad, pre-loaded with age-appropriate apps) enables students to develop a fluency in — and mastery over — web-based research and digital learning. Specialized software allows them to use their voices to type and edit text. Classrooms have Smartboards and other interactive technologies, giving students instant access to classgenerated notes. Our library and media center supports students’ academic growth with cutting-edge computer workstations, a vast collection of digital, print and audio texts and links to thousands of online, original-source periodicals. Individual attention is a core component of life at Westmark. Our unique Advisory program brings small groups of students together with an advisor on a weekly basis to build confidence, explore identity, cultivate leadership skills and formulate strategies for self-advocacy. Academic counselors guide student progress, communicating with students, parents and teachers to address challenges such as homework management or ways to improve comprehension. Short-term, solution-oriented counseling is available in both individual and group sessions, helping students learn to value attitudes, skills and knowledge that promote respect, appreciation and acceptance.

“ Westmark is a caring, small and very accommodating environment. Through Westmark, I’ve learned self-advocacy and to understand and deal with my unique learning style. —Current Upper School student Central to the Westmark ethos is an emphasis on character development. Our year-long Get R.E.A.L. program fosters students’ ability to challenge themselves, to handle adversity, to appreciate diversity and to maintain compassion for others while helping to develop and recognize leadership skills. Westmark nurtures students as they learn to embrace accomplishment, accept responsibility for their actions and develop into contributing members of society. This is transformation — and it happens every day at Westmark.

11

Transforming Westmark Starting in 2004, Westmark Board of Trustees began its effort, which was later formalized in 2007, to transform the school — developing an extraordinary place into something even more so. Five years later, the board’s ambitious goals had become a glorious reality. There was nothing small about Transformation: The Campaign for Westmark School. Designed for maximum impact, it called for developing and implementing a vision to become a fully independent school; building new classrooms and facilities; attracting new leadership to the school; increasing enrollment; overhauling the curriculum; beginning the integration of state-of-t he-art technology into the classrooms; developing programs for music, art and drama; and overhauling the athletics and physical education program. The campaign had lofty objectives, and the Westmark community rose to meet the challenge. Through collaboration and dedication, hard work and strategic planning, parents, teachers, students, faculty and supporters across Los Angeles realized the Transformation campaign’s goals. As a result, our school crossed the threshold of an exciting new era: equipped to give our students every advantage, and poised to secure their lifelong success.

Tools for Transformation As enrollment at Westmark continued to grow (through the expansion of our curriculum to grades 3-12), so did the need for improved and expanded facilities. We had simply outgrown the temporary buildings and old camp cabins that previously housed our program. Hence, the birth of our $5.9 million Transformation campaign, which initially

began in 2004 and formally kicked off in 2007. Its completion in 2013 marked the school’s initial effort to address critical classroom and facilities needs. This successful campaign was just the first stage of a much larger plan for capital improvement, which will continue to enhance student growth and development well into the future.

The exceptional generosity of our capital campaign supporters helped raise:

The Sharon D. Lund Foundation Supporting our teachers through professional development At the heart of any school are its teachers. Well-trained teachers are critical to student success — and, more than any other area, this is where an investment of resources translates directly to student growth and achievement. Professional development at Westmark is particularly vital, since teachers are called upon to be experts in special education as well as specialists in their respective disciplines. The Sharon D. Lund Foundation’s steadfast financial contributions toward our faculty’s professional development have been instrumental in exposing them to critical assistive technologies that offer students access to content and curriculum in ways that work with their individual learning styles. Additionally, the Sharon D. Lund Foundation’s generous summer grant funding for our “Lund Scholar/Teachers” allowed many of our talented, hard-working faculty members to participate in conferences and attend training sessions that have resulted in an expansion of the type and content of courses developed at Westmark and an increase in student capabilities in the arts, math and language arts. Financial Aid The Promise of Giving Back

“ If we did not have the financial aid we would have had to move our daughter to a different school after she had settled in and forged new friendships and had become comfortable with her surroundings. We know that Westmark is the right fit for our daughter. She has blossomed in her academic programs and received an “A” average for all her subjects on her last report card. Our daughter has overcome so many obstacles and without the financial support at Westmark we would have had to subject her to one more transition obstacle. Your financial aid provides the stability and support our daughter needs to thrive during these formative school years.” —RECENT WESTMARK FAMILY, FINANCIAL AID RECIPIENT Just as Westmark families are committed to our school, so, too does the school support our students and their families. Substantial financial aid — made possible by generous individual donors, corporations and foundations — enable many people across our community to access Westmark’s stellar programmatic and extracurricular resources. One central partner is the Windsong Trust — an independent foundation established in 2004 to advance children’s education around the globe. The trust is a major contributor whose enthusiasm for, and investment in, the Westmark mission has

helped encourage others to follow suit, and we are deeply indebted to its leadership for their confidence and collaboration. Financial aid is an essential element for all independent schools; it helps ensure a school environment that reflects the economic, social and cultural diversity of the community in which we live. This diversity has enormous benefits, from infusing new student and parent perspectives and deepening our knowledge of Los Angeles, to bringing fresh approaches to our curriculum, to our programs and to our lives.

A Family Affair Westmark Parent Association dreams big and builds bigger The Westmark Parent Association (WPA) supports Westmark School through various volunteer-led activities that build community spirit, transform student performance and positively impact the life of the school. Participation in the WPA provides parents with opportunities to develop lifelong friendships, learn more about school life, serve as role models of service, and make connections that make Westmark a place like no other. The WPA offers parents a variety of ways to participate actively in their children’s school experience. Spearheaded by WPA members, regularly scheduled events generate proceeds that have been used to purchase necessities outside the school’s operating budget, as well as to renovate the administration building and install the new school library.

Other avenues of involvement include:

Opportunities for involvement abound. For instance, parents might consider donating their time as “grade level representatives.” In this capacity, one or two parents from each grade level oversee communication with other parents in the class. These representatives send out emails and make phone calls to remind parents of upcoming school functions, and also serve as liaisons between administrators, teachers and other parents in each grade.

Back to School Celebration: This is a chance for parents to reconnect with old friends and acquaint themselves with new ones. Parents lend their generous assistance with light setup and cleanup duties, as well as greeting other parents upon arrival.

Of course, making a sizable time commitment is not a requirement in order to have an impact as a parent. Multiple impromptu, parent-sponsored, grade level events allow Westmark parents to play important roles, whether those are handing out name tags, providing a dish for a potluck dinner or simply organizing a morning carpool for other students in the same neighborhood.

Sunshine Committee: WPA provides support to Westmark families in times of need and recognizes special occasions. Hospitality Committee: This team of WPA members bake delicious refreshments for many of our Westmark events: parent education meetings, school plays, talent shows, sports banquets and more.

Homecoming: The WPA plays an important part in organizing a day of support for our own Westmark Lions, full of school spirit, food and fun! Book Fair: This wonderful event takes place in the fall and calls upon parents to help set up, break down and sell books during the school day. Annual Fundraiser and Auction: This fantastic mid-March event leverages parent talent for everything from invitations and decorations to venue setup and auction item solicitation. Teacher Appreciation Luncheon: WPA volunteers are instrumental in coordinating this lovely way to say “thank you” to the people who nurture our children every day.

Family for Life Westmark alumni keep the connection going The strength of the Westmark community extends far beyond current students and parents; it continues to grow within the hearts of our alumni, too. Last year marked the inception of the Westmark Alumni Association (WAA), and the class of 2013 became inaugural members. Seniors celebrated National College Decision Day by sporting t-shirts and sweatshirts revealing their college of choice during a special lunch period ice cream social. ability, creativity and academic success. Each year, Westmark alumni reunite on campus for our annual Homecoming celebration, spring musical, or to lend a helping hand by speaking to current students. Plans for future WAA events include alumni baseball games, happy hour events, career networking opportunities and other fun social activities.

“ Westmark was the starting point for the rest of my life. I know when

I was attending Westmark, I was not the best student! No matter what, Westmark never gave up on me. I have carried that can-do attitude that I learned at Westmark throughout my life. —Alumnus, Class of 2001

and Maddy Clark ’13 also led an end-of-year assembly unveiling the Class of 2012-13 senior gift: a tree planted in the courtyard at the center of campus. This natural wonder will serve as a reminder of the roots, growth, strength and connectedness of the Westmark community. During its second year, the alumni association continues to grow and to offer new opportunities for engagement. The WAA is focused on creating occasions for alumni to reunite and reconnect with the school that, for many, was the birthplace of their leadership

The core of the Westmark experience — strong relationships with teachers, deep friendships and dynamic learning opportunities in the context of a caring community — endures for our alumni, who carry it with them throughout their lives as they build relationships, launch careers and embrace new challenges. Through the formalization of the Westmark Alumni Association, current and former students have access to greater resources, helping them achieve unprecedented levels of personal and professional success.

Building Strong Foundations The Westmark legacy begins with you An excellent educational foundation is achieved with the help of your generosity. Through your support, you have helped to provide funds for academic, artistic, athletic and enrichment programs; boosted financial assistance for deserving students; and allowed our school to be a leader in developing programs and tools to meet the needs of high-potential students with language-based learning differences. You are part of a legacy of parents and alumni stretching back decades, who — having benefited from the generosity of previous donors — continue the tradition of supporting our school for future generations of students.

Your support encourages others to give. Giving to Westmark is a way for you to reach out and make a difference in young people’s lives by investing in their talent and promise. And when you support our school, you are also helping to build a strong network of students and alumni that extends far beyond the borders of our Encino campus. Thank you for partnering with us to transform the opportunities available to students today and tomorrow, and to sustain the kind of instruction that Westmark provides. Your gift matters — not only to our children and their families, but also to the ongoing health and strength of our community, nation and world.

“ Westmark has helped me to understand that it is okay to have

a learning difference. At Westmark, there are teachers who understand how I need to learn and who are willing to take the extra time to explain things. I am now proud to say I learn differently, because I am successful in school.” —Alumnus

Director of Advancement I want to thank the entire Westmark School community for the warm welcome I received when I joined the school in September 2013. It is a privilege to be a part of such a great school, where children are able to realize their true abilities, develop their talents and discover themselves with the help of an amazing group of faculty and staff. Westmark owes a debt of gratitude to all of the wonderful families, alumni, grandparents, past parents, corporations, foundations and friends that have, for nearly three decades, given of their time, expertise and resources to continue the legacy of supporting and educating children with languagebased learning differences. This annual report is a tribute to those whose vision and support (both to the 2012-13 Annual Fund and the multi-year Transformation capital campaign) have had such a positive impact on the school. Westmark also is indebted to Culver Scales, the former Director of Advancement at Westmark from June 2011 to June 2013, who helped rebuild the Advancement Team and was instrumental in securing many foundation gifts with the cooperation of Board members. She also helped re-establish the

Westmark Parent Association and was involved in boosting our Annual Fund donor participation percentages from previous years. Thank you, Culver! Each gift to Westmark is inexorably tied to the past, present, and future of the school — the past, because it honors those who have given unselfishly to create this extraordinary school; the present, where new and exciting programs build upon the work of those who have come before; and to the future, because each gift inspires others to continue supporting the students and alumni who will follow. Thank you for making a difference and for realizing that, no matter the size of your gift, it will have a deep and lasting impact on so many young people’s lives. We teach our students to explore, grow and challenge themselves to reach their full potential. We hope you will continue to partner with us at Westmark as we continue to evolve and grow in reaching our full potential, as well.

Your contributions are more than just a source of support for Westmark’s ongoing operations and programmatic development; they are a vital investment in our children’s personal transformation and future success.

“ Westmark is a place for all types of learners and personalities to shine. The teaching staff does an excellent job of incorporating multiple modalities to meet the needs of ALL the students. Students can come to school knowing that their teachers truly care, and want them to succeed. Students can feel safe, wanted, and comfortable with their differences.” —PAST FACULTY MEMBER Westmark School is pleased to accept contributions made by cash, check — made payable to “Westmark School” — or credit card.
