On September 16, Leslie Hindman Auctioneers will offer Important Jewelry from the Estate of Rita Dee Hassenfeld. Expansive and carefully curated, the collection underscores Mrs. Hassenfeld’s unerring taste, characterized by both elegance and a sense of whimsy. Mrs. Hassenfeld was an accomplished ballerina in her youth and later a dedicated philanthropist and humanitarian. She married the late Harold Irwin Hassenfeld, a member of the founding family of Hassenfeld Brothers, now known as Hasbro Inc. The Hassenfelds divided their time between two homes in Nashville and Palm Beach.
Mrs. Hassenfeld, renowned for her impeccable taste, was often named one of Palm Beach’s 100 best-dressed women. Mr. and Mrs. Hassenfeld traveled extensively, and Mr. Hassenfeld adored buying jewelry for his wife. Their children fondly recall family trips to New York, which always included a visit to Van Cleef & Arpels or Harry Winston. The single-owner sale showcases important jewelry from leading designers including Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Belperron, David Webb, Harry Winston, Seaman Schepps and others. Also included are contemporary designers such as Nicholas Varney, Dorota, Christopher Walling and Elizabeth Gage.
Highlights include a superb Art Deco platinum, emerald, diamond, onyx and enamel lapel watch / necklace by Cartier (pictured above), estimated to bring $100,000 - 150,000. Another highlight is an impressive platinum and diamond ring by Harry Winston, containing a pear shape brilliant cut diamond weighing approximately 9.12 carats of D color and VS2 clarity ($375,000 - 425,000).

A LOOK AHEAD THE WINTER WHITE HOUSE JANUARY 23, 2016 In January of 2016, Leslie Hindman Auctioneers will conduct an auction of furniture and decorative arts from the famous “Winter White House” in Palm Beach. This historically significant consignment has been brought to us by Mr. and Mrs. John Castle, who purchased the home in 1995 from the Kennedy family. The estate was initially built and designed in the Mediterranean Revival style by Palm Beach architect Addison Mizner in 1923 for department store magnate Rodman Wanamaker. Less than one decade later, Mr. Wanamaker sold the home to Joseph P. Kennedy, who then commissioned the renowned architect, Maurice Fatio, to build an additional wing onto the home, along with a pool and tennis court.
The home remained in the Kennedy family for over 60 years. Joseph and Rose Kennedy, with their children, typically spent winter vacations at the home. During John F. Kennedy’s presidency, the Kennedy family spent every Christmas and Easter holiday at the estate. In 1995, Mr. Castle purchased the estate furnished from the Kennedys. The auction consists of nearly 300 lots and includes an 18 foot dining table, a chest with each drawer being labeled in Rose’s handwriting describing their contents and the bedroom furniture of Joe, Jack, Bobby and Ted Kennedy, among additional property from the Palm Beach home.
