A glamorous Rita Dee Hassenfeld captured by a roving society photographer in the 1950s at The Plaza Hotel in New York City.

Mr. and Mrs. Hassenfeld strike a color-coordinated pose for this 1960s snapshot taken on Worth Avenue in Palm Beach.

rita dee h a sse nfe l d Leslie Hindman Auctioneers is proud to offer Important Jewelry from the Estate of Rita Dee Hassenfeld for sale at auction. The collection is at once expansive and carefully curated: a showcase for Mrs. Hassenfeld’s unerring taste characterized by elegance, color and a sense of whimsy. Mrs. Hassenfeld’s jewelry collection encompasses everything from significant signed pieces and important diamonds to playful uses of colored stones. The sale will showcase important signed jewelry from leading designers including Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Belperron, David Webb, Harry Winston and Seaman Schepps. Mrs. Hassenfeld was an accomplished ballerina in her youth and later a dedicated philanthropist and humanitarian. She married Harold Irwin Hassenfeld, a member of the founding family of Hassenfeld Brothers, now known as Hasbro Industries (manufacturer of Monopoly, Mr. Potato Head, Nerf, PlayDoh and Trivial Pursuit.) The couple divided their time between their two homes in Nashville and Palm Beach. Mrs. Hassenfeld, renowned for her irreproachable taste, was often named one of Palm Beach’s 100 best-dressed women. The couple traveled extensively, and Mr. Hassenfeld adored buying jewelry for his wife. Their children fondly recall family trips to New York, which always included a visit

to Van Cleef & Arpels or Harry Winston. A relative held a position in the diamond division at Harry Winston, and the family members would often enjoy lunch together at the Diamond Dealers Club. The couple also traveled to the Far East and Europe in search of both established and new designers, always returning with a sought-after addition to their collection. The Hassenfeld’s drive for collecting was a personal passion that never competed with the couple’s devotion to numerous local, national and international religious, civic and fine arts organizations. Mrs. Hassenfeld participated in numerous charity events for organizations such as the American Cancer Society, American Jewish Committee, Jewish Theological Seminary and Brandeis University. Mr. and Mrs. Hassenfeld were one of the first couples to be honored as respective fellows in the same year by Brandeis University. Their legacy is memorialized by several buildings on the University’s campus that bear the name Hassenfeld. Mrs. Hassenfeld was also a founding member of the Swan Ball, one of the premier charity events in the United States attended by hundreds of prestigious supporters. The event continues to benefit Cheekwood Estate in Nashville, Tennessee, a privately supported nonprofit educational institute for the study and appreciation of the arts and botanics.

Featured Designers ALETTO BROTHERS

SEAMAN SCHEPPS

TIFFANY & Co.

The family saga of the Aletto Brothers firm has spanned five generations and carried them far from their native Naples, Italy. However, the exquisite quality of materials and high caliber of design have remained constant. Producing innovative yet wearable jewelry from their Boca Raton, Florida location, their work continues to attract discerning collectors.

An immigrant’s son, who grew up in the tenements of New York’s Lower East Side, Seaman Schepps established his reputation by designing exclusive pieces mixing unique ideas, bold colors and sharp textures. After a brief stint in California, the Schepps family moved back to New York where Schepps opened his 6th Avenue salon. When the stock market crashed in 1929, Schepps, like many of his clients, lost everything. With a remodeled business plan and renewed vigor, he reopened his doors on Madison Avenue in 1934 where he served clients such as President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the Duchess of Windsor, and members of the Du Pont, Mellon and Rockefeller families. Although Schepps passed on in 1972, his namesake house continues to attract collectors looking for jewelry of splendor and singular style.

The best known jeweler in the United States and perhaps the world, Tiffany & Company has, for much of its history, exhibited the best gems from around the world and work from some of the finest jewelry designers. The reputations of such luminaries as Schlumberger, Claflin, Peretti and Cummings were forged while working for this great house. Not limited to any one genre, Tiffany has produced an astounding array of jeweled art over its history and continues forward today with their global reach.

CARTIER Founded in 1847 by Louis-Francois Cartier, this French house has remained at the forefront of fine jewelry generation after generation. Vastly expanding the reputation and reach of the firm were Louis-Francois’ grandsons who are responsible for establishing the name as a worldwide luxury icon. Creating extravagant works for the clients ranging from the French royals to Hollywood’s elite, Cartier is responsible for producing some of the most recognizable and sought after jewels known for their feminine style and timeless elegance.

DAVID WEBB At the age of 16 David Webb traveled to New York City in 1941 to start his education in jewelry. Opening his own location in 1946 with business partner Nina Silberstein, he began to produce jewelry in the bold and bright style his name became synonymous with. Known predominantly for work such as the famous bracelets designed in playful animal motifs, the firm also produces classic jewels constructed with fabulous stones and delicate details.

HARRY WINSTON Nicknamed “The King of Diamonds”, Harry Winston was a master of creating excitement surrounding his work. Beginning in the 1920’s he made a name for himself buying estates containing important stones. His best known transaction was the purchase of Evelyn Walsh MacLean’s collection which most notably included the Hope Diamond. The Harry Winston aesthetic combines exceedingly fine stones with minimalist settings designed to highlight only their inherent beauty.

PATEK PHILIPPE Patek Philippe has been at the forefront of innovation in the science of timekeeping since the mid 1800’s. Collected by passionate watch lovers the world over, the company has produced some of the most complicated timepieces while maintaining a classic aesthetic and superb quality.

SUZANNE BELPERRON Few names in fine jewelry conjure the mystique and prestige of Suzanne Belperron. Through her delicate feminine aesthetic and an intriguing professional journey she managed to emerge as one of the most renowned designers of the 20th century. Beginning her career with the prestigious firm of Rene Boivin, Madam Belperron’s personal style began to take shape, showing a preference for flowing sensuous lines and utilizing alternative materials like rock crystal and chalcedony as carved components in her jewels. After leaving Boivin and forming Herz-Belperron with Bernard Herz, Belperron enjoyed the freedom to explore her own design sense more fully. Her work attracted some of the brightest luminaries of her day including the Duke and Duchess of Windsor as well as Elsa Schiaparelli and Diana Vreeland.

TONY DUQUETTE Tony Duquette is an American design icon whose work spans seven decades and four continents. He began his career as a costume designer in Hollywood but soon became recognized by such arbiters of taste as Lady Elsie de Wolfe Mendl. Under Lady Mendl’s patronage, Duquette also created special furnishings and jewelry. After serving in the army during World War II, Duquette returned to the design world to enjoy so much continued success that he was the first American artist to be honored with a one man showing at the Louvre Museum in Paris. In the late 1970’s Duquette and his wife established the Anthony and Elizabeth Duquette Foundation for the Living Arts. He actively created great design until his death in 1999.

VAN CLEEF & ARPELS Starting with a marriage between two families both intimately involved with the jewelry arts, this Parisian firm founded in 1898 has created a unique character all its own. Its exclusive pieces have been eagerly collected by royalty and celebrity alike. Credited with many innovations in construction and design, this master jeweler is also known for having the highest standards for their gems. Only using stones of the very best quality and rarity, a jewel by Van Cleef & Arpels is viewed first as art and then accessory.

VERDURA The colorful persona of Fulco Santostefano della Cerda, Duke of Verdura, always comes through in the bold designs of his firm. Working with Coco Chanel in Paris early in his career, the Duke went on to establish his own salons in both New York and Paris. He won praise and followers for marrying the warm tones of yellow gold to stones chosen more for their brilliant colors than for their rarity. The firm lives on today under the Landrigan family who faithfully creates jewelry based on the incredible sketch work that the Duke left behind.

Telephone Bids On lots with a low estimate of $300 and above and if a prospective buyer makes arrangements with us prior to the commencement of the sale we will use reasonable efforts to contact them to enable them to participate in the bidding by telephone and we do not accept liability for failure to do so or for errors and omissions in connection with telephone bidding. These telephone bids may be recorded at the discretion of Leslie Hindman Auctioneers.

Online Bids We will use reasonable efforts to carry out online bids and do not accept liability for equipment failure, inability to access the Internet or software malfunctions related to the execution of online bids. Reserves Some lots in the sale are subject to a reserve which is the confidential minimum price below which such lot will not be sold. The reserve will not exceed the low estimate of the lot. Reserves are agreed upon with consignors or, in the absence thereof, the absolute discretion of Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, Inc. The auctioneer may open the bidding on any lot below the reserve by placing a bid on behalf of the seller. The auctioneer may continue to bid on behalf of the seller up to the amount of the reserve, either by placing consecutive bids or by placing bids in response to other bidders. With respect to lots that are offered without reserve, unless there are already competing bids, the auctioneer, in his or her discretion, will generally open the bidding at half of the low estimate for the lot. In the absence of a bid at that level, the auctioneer may proceed backwards at his or her discretion until a bid is recognized, and then continue up from that amount. Auctioneer’s Discretion The auctioneer has the right at his or her absolute and sole discretion to refuse any bid, to advance the bidding in such a manner as he or she may decide, to withdraw any lot, and in the case of error or dispute, and whether during or after the sale, to determine the successful bidder, to continue the bidding, to cancel the sale or to reoffer and resell the item in dispute. If any dispute arises after the sale, our sale record is conclusive. Successful Bid The highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer will be the purchaser. In the case of a tie bid, the winning bidder will determined by the auctioneer at his or her sole discretion. In the event of a dispute between bidders, the auctioneer has final discretion to determine the successful bidder or to reoffer the lot in dispute. If any dispute arises after the sale, the Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, Inc. sale record shall be conclusive. Title passes upon the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer to the highest acknowledged bidder subject to the Conditions of Sale set forth herein, and the bidder assumes full risk and responsibility.
