(French, 1881-1955) Deux femmes tenant des fleurs, 1954 oil on canvas signed F. Léger and dated (lower right); signed, titled and dated (verso) 21 1/2 x 25 1/2 inches. Provenance: Mr. Jacques Arnold Croquez, Paris Private Collection R.S. Johnson International Galleries, Chicago Acquired from the above by the present owner in 1968 Exhibited: Chicago, R.S. Johnson International Galleries, Fernand Léger, Retrospective Exhibition, 1881-1955, November-December, 1966, No. 58, illustrated p. 57 Literature: Hansma, Irus and Claude Lefebvre du Preÿ, FERNAND LÉGER Catalogue Raisonné de l’Oeuvre Peint et Supplément, Tome X: 954-1955, No. 1627, illustrated p. 65 This painting is a complete first study for the larger and final version at the Tate Modern in London. $800,000-1,200,000

Deux femmes tenant des fleurs, 1954, Tate Modern, London

Fernand Léger declared in 1945, “the object in modern painting must become the main character and overthrow the subject. If, in turn, the human form becomes an object, it can considerably liberate possibilities for the modern artist.”1 Léger’s depiction of everyday, simplified figures defined his personal style of abstraction. Visits to America in the 1930s and 1940s gradually caused the artist’s more complex Cubist work to give way to organically rendered figures and body parts that hover in an indeterminate space and are imbued with formal clarity through the use of bold contours and planar color. Painted in 1954, Deux femmes tenant des fleurs is a completed study to the larger final work that hangs in the Tate Modern and painted in the same year. The smaller oil varies only slightly from the Tate Modern version shown above, with such details as the placement of a necklace on one of the figures and the shape of the natural branches at the center of the painting. The colors are less saturated while the placement of the color blocks is near identical. The present work reveals Léger’s preoccupation with the traditional theme of the nude, which was a regular feature of his art and had played an important role in the Cubist revival of Neoclassicism spearheaded by Pablo Picasso after the First World War. The two stylized nude female forms fit neatly along the length and breadth of the canvas, their forms intermingling and contorting. They are executed with thick black lines and with touches of gray paint to impart a sense of depth. Léger often painted two female nudes together, in order to explore the rhythmic patterns of the body. His use of broad brushstrokes of color is also a recognized characteristic of the artist’s late career work, with his rigorously clear vision of forms and colors. The strongly delineated areas of red, blue, orange and yellow enhance the lines of the figures but also exist in their own right as separate forms. Together, these shapes and lines intensify the dynamic rhythm of the composition. Two years prior to its sale, Deux femmes tenant des fleurs was featured in R.S. Johnson International Galleries’ Fernand Léger Retrospective Exhibition, held November and December of 1966 in Chicago. The show was the most comprehensive Léger exhibition presented by an American art gallery at the time. An important inclusion as a late career work, this painting, with its boldly contorted figures and bright blocks of color, can be regarded an equally modern exploration and celebration of shape and form. 1 The artist in “The Human Body Considered as an Object” (Edward Fry, ed., Functions of Painting by Fernand Léger, New York, 1973)

Jean Metzinger

(French, 1883-1956) Nature morte au vin de madère, 1915 oil on canvas laid to board signed J. Metzinger and dated (lower left) 28 1/2 x 20 3/4 inches. Property from the Estate of Robert and Lois Orchard, St. Louis, Missouri Provenance: Niveau Gallery, New York Hirschl & Adler Galleries, New York Acquired from the above by the present owner in 1960 $400,000-600,000

A key leader in the development of Cubism, Jean Metzinger was an influential artist and principal theorist of the movement. His 1910 publication, Note sur la Peinture, was the first to explore the idea of the fragmenting of form. Rather than limiting the depiction of an object from one viewpoint, Metzinger advocated painting from different angles at once, in order to articulate successive and subjective experiences within the context of both space and time. During the First World War, the artist furthered his role as a leading Cubist with his cofounding of Crystal Cubism. This phase of Cubism emphasized mathematics, flat surface activity and large, overlapping geometric planes. Painted in 1915, Nature morte au vin de madère reflects Metzinger’s quest for harmony in the particular language of Crystal Cubism. As opposed to the linear patterns used by Braque and Picasso, Metzinger depicts the interlocking surfaces of the objects in the still life with muted colors that follow a pure geometry. The globular shape of the wine bottle melds into the rim of the cup that stands before it, which in turn is echoed by the bowl of the pipe in the left foreground. In one form, the artist reduces and combines intelligibly a series of objects that elegantly fit together. This purifying of Cubism is linked to a direct reaction of those, like Metzinger, who served in the Great War, and used its rational methods and call to order to escape the horrors of the armed conflict. Writing in July 1916 to the artist and fellow Cubist Albert Gleizes, Metzinger stated: “You can’t begin to imagine what I’ve found out since the beginning of the war, working outside painting but for painting. The geometry of the fourth space has no more secrets for me. Previously I had only intuitions, now I have certainty…. The actual result? A new harmony. Don’t take this word harmony in its ordinary, everyday sense, take it in its original sense. Everything is number.”1 Nature morte au vin de madère stands as an important example of Metzinger’s urgent search for deeper harmonies in a dramatically changed world. 1 D. Robbins, “Jean Metzinger, At the Center of Cubism,” Jean Metzinger in Retrospect, exh. cat., University of Iowa Museum of Art, Iowa City, p. 21.

Fernand Léger

(French, 1881-1955) Paysage village, 1914 gouache on paper board initialled FL and dated (lower right) 12 1/2 x 16 inches. Provenance: Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler, Paris Sold: Hotel Drouot, Paris, 4th Kahnweiler Sequestration Sale, May 7-8, 1923 R.S. Johnson International Galleries, Chicago Acquired from the above by the present owner in 1968 Exhibited: Chicago, R.S. Johnson International Galleries, Fernand Léger, Retrospective Exhibition, 1881-1955, November-December, 1966, No. 7, illustrated p. 10 $600,000-800,000

Though Fernand Léger embraced Cubism and the movement’s notion of fracturing objects into geometric shapes, he retained an interest in depicting the illusion of three-dimensionality. Particularly in his early career, the young artist produced a body of work that effortlessly transitioned between traditional genres, representational motifs and pure abstraction. This interrelated series of paintings blends recognizable forms and abstract elements of line, form and pure swaths of color. The pictorial vocabulary that Léger created at this time refined his aesthetic philosophy and established his reputation as a painter of physical and dynamic works. Between 1912 and the outbreak of World War I in August 1914, Léger executed a number of abstracted paintings that depict city and country and the nebulous spaces in between. Paysage village, 1914, is one of these works that demonstrates his exploration of not only formal invention and subject matter choices, but also of his concern with current political and social issues. During a time of profound technological change, the relationship between people and their environment, whether city or country, drastically changed. Particularly in France, industrialization created a nationalistic reaction that embraced the rural countryside as the true expression of the nation. In the present work, spherical and cylindrical shapes of trees intermingle and seem to subsume the simple geometric blocks of the village buildings. Broad white swaths of gouache contrast with strokes of red and blue and evoke the national colors of France. The artist has also used the surface of the paper to his advantage to provide a textural and tonal background for his colorful composition. Paysage village was most likely created shortly before World War I was declared. With this artwork, Léger has merged the past with the present through his use of the most contemporary means of expression, in order to depict an idyllic view of a quickly vanishing way of life. Paysage Village was once in the collection of Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler, an important early Cubist dealer. Later in its history, it was included in R.S. Johnson International Galleries’ Fernand Léger Retrospective Exhibition, held November and December of 1966 in Chicago. The show was the most comprehensive Léger exhibition presented by an American art gallery at the time.

Guide for Prospective Buyers Conditions of Sale Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, Inc. encourages all prospective buyers to read the Conditions of Sale printed in this catalogue. Exhibitions Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, Inc. recommends that all prospective buyers attend the pre-sale exhibition prior to the auction. Staff members are available at our pre-sale exhibitions to advise prospective buyers on particular objects or on any aspect of the bidding process. Estimates Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, Inc. provides catalogue descriptions and pre-auction estimates for each lot included in the sale. These estimates are a guide for prospective bidders. They are not definitive. All pre-sale estimates are subject to revision. Condition Reports We are happy to provide a condition report for lots with a low estimate of $300 and above. Nevertheless, intending buyers are reminded that condition reports are statements of our opinion only, and that each lot is sold “AS IS,” per our Conditions of Sale, as outlined in the back of this catalogue. All lots should be viewed personally by prospective buyers or their agents to evaluate the condition of the property offered for sale due to the highly subjective nature of condition reports. Bidding at Auction The highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer will be the purchaser. In addition to the hammer price, the buyer agrees to pay Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, Inc. a buyer’s premium as well as any applicable taxes.

Bidding generally opens at half the low estimate and advances in the following order, although the auctioneer may vary the bidding increments during the course of the auction. The normal bidding increments are:

$0 - $200 ............................................. $10 $200 - $500 ............................................. $25 $500 - $1,000 .......................................... $50 $1,000 - $2,000 ........................................ $100 $2,000 - $5,000 ........................................ $200 $5,000 - $10,000 ...................................... $500 $10,000 - $20,000 ................................... $1,000 $20,000 - $50,000 ................................... $2,000 $50,000 - $100,000 ................................. $5,000 $100,000 - $200,000 ............................... $10,000 Over > $200,000 ......... Auctioneer’s Discretion

Conditions of Sale LESLIE HINDMAN AUCTIONEERS, INC. AS AGENT

The lots listed in this catalogue will be offered by Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, Inc. as owner or as agent for consignor(s) subject to the following terms and conditions. By bidding at auction you agree to be bound by these Conditions of Sale.

BEFORE THE SALE

Prospective buyers are strongly advised to personally examine any property in which they are interested before the auction takes place. Condition reports are usually available on request, on lots with a low estimate of $300 and above. All lots are sold “AS IS” and without recourse and neither Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, Inc. nor its consignor(s) makes any warranties or representations, express or implied with respect to such lots. Neither Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, Inc. nor its consignor(s) makes any express or implied warranty or representation of any kind or nature with respect to merchantability, fitness for purpose, correctness of the catalogue or other description of the physical condition, size, quality, rarity, importance, medium, material, genuineness, attribution, provenance, period, culture, source, origin, exhibitions, literature or historical significance of any lot sold. The absence of any reference to the condition of a lot does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from wear and tear, imperfections or the effects of aging. No statement, whether written or oral, and whether made in the catalogue, or in supplements to the catalogue, an advertisement, a bill of sale, a salesroom posting or announcement, the remarks of an auctioneer, or otherwise, shall be deemed to create any warranty, representation or assumption of liability. Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, Inc. and its consignor(s) make no warranty or representation, express or implied, that the purchaser will acquire any copyright or reproduction rights to any lot sold. Leslie Hindman Auctioneers Inc. expressly reserves the right to reproduce any image of the lots sold in the catalogue.

AT THE SALE Refusal of Admission Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, Inc. has the right, at our complete discretion, to refuse admission to the premises or participation in any auction and to reject any bid. Registration before Bidding A prospective buyer must complete and sign a registration form and provide identification before bidding. We may require bank or other financial references. Bidding as Principal When making a bid, a bidder is accepting personal liability to pay the purchase price, including the buyer’s premium, all applicable taxes and all other applicable charges, unless it has been explicitly agreed upon in writing with Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, Inc. before the commencement of the sale that the bidder is acting as agent on behalf of an identified third party acceptable to Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, Inc., and that Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, Inc. will only look to the principal for payment. Absentee Bids We will use reasonable efforts to carry out written bids given to us at least 24 hours prior to the sale for the convenience of clients who are not present at the auction in person, by an agent or by telephone. Bids must be placed in U.S. dollars. If we receive written bids on a particular lot for identical amounts, and these are the highest bids on the lot at the auction, it will be sold to the person whose written bid was received and accepted first. Execution of written bids is a free service undertaken subject to other commitments at the time of the sale and we do not accept liability for failing to execute a written bid or for errors and omissions in connection with the written bid. Telephone Bids On lots with a low estimate of $300 and above and if a prospective buyer makes arrangements with us prior to the commencement of the sale we will use reasonable efforts to contact them to enable them to participate in the bidding by telephone and we do not accept liability for failure to do so or for errors and omissions in connection with telephone bidding. These telephone bids may be recorded at the discretion of Leslie Hindman Auctioneers.

150 m o d e r n a n d c o n t e m p o r a r y a r t

Online Bids We will use reasonable efforts to carry out online bids and do not accept liability for equipment failure, inability to access the Internet or software malfunctions related to the execution of online bids. Reserves Some lots in the sale are subject to a reserve which is the confidential minimum price below which such lot will not be sold. The reserve will not exceed the low estimate of the lot. Reserves are agreed upon with consignors or, in the absence thereof, the absolute discretion of Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, Inc. The auctioneer may open the bidding on any lot below the reserve by placing a bid on behalf of the seller. The auctioneer may continue to bid on behalf of the seller up to the amount of the reserve, either by placing consecutive bids or by placing bids in response to other bidders. With respect to lots that are offered without reserve, unless there are already competing bids, the auctioneer, in his or her discretion, will generally open the bidding at half of the low estimate for the lot. In the absence of a bid at that level, the auctioneer may proceed backwards at his or her discretion until a bid is recognized, and then continue up from that amount. Auctioneer’s Discretion The auctioneer has the right at his or her absolute and sole discretion to refuse any bid, to advance the bidding in such a manner as he or she may decide, to withdraw any lot, and in the case of error or dispute, and whether during or after the sale, to determine the successful bidder, to continue the bidding, to cancel the sale or to reoffer and resell the item in dispute. If any dispute arises after the sale, our sale record is conclusive. Successful Bid The highest bidder acknowledged by the auctioneer will be the purchaser. In the case of a tie bid, the winning bidder will determined by the auctioneer at his or her sole discretion. In the event of a dispute between bidders, the auctioneer has final discretion to determine the successful bidder or to reoffer the lot in dispute. If any dispute arises after the sale, the Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, Inc. sale record shall be conclusive. Title passes upon the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer to the highest acknowledged bidder subject to the Conditions of Sale set forth herein, and the bidder assumes full risk and responsibility.
