Lots 17-18 Property from the Estate of Alexandra Emery Moore (1894-1983) Cincinnati, Ohio Alexandra Emery Moore, an adventurous creative with an unimpeachable eye, was the first-born daughter to John Josiah Emery and Lela Amelia, a prominent family with ties to New York and Cincinnati. Among her relatives include Audrey Emery, a socialite who married on of the last Russian Grand Dukes, and John J. Emery, a great patron of the Cincinnati Art Museum. In her youth, she debuted in both London and New York, and journeyed to China with a friend, which instilled within her a deep passion for travel. Indeed, her acceptance of a marriage proposal from Benjamin Moore was contingent upon receipt of a ring and promise of a honeymoon in China. Mr. Moore hailed from an old New York family—“A Visit from St. Nicholas” was penned by a forebear on their family farm, Chelsea, now the vibrant neighborhood in Manhattan by the same name—and trained as a lawyer at Harvard. Nevertheless, after his marriage, his new bride requested that he forgo working in favor of accompanying her on adventures across the world. While on their honeymoon, the young couple was entranced by the views as they floated along their houseboat tour through the Yangtze River, and were particularly drawn to a stark white house under a black roof reflected in the water. Upon their return to the United States, they purchased 100 acres of land in Oyster Bay in Long Island, and founded the associated nearby village of Muttontown, of which Mr. Moore became the first mayor. Drawing inspiration from the architecture she saw during her travels in China, the young Mrs. Moore collaborated with renowned architect William Adams Delano (of Delano & Aldrich) to construct an estate on the land combining Chinese and French Renaissance styles. The house, fittingly named “Chelsea” included an undulating roof, internal court, moon gate, and a moat, and was furnished with her purchases from around the world. Her first trips to China, during which time she likely purchased the large Peonies and Quails and elaborate floor screen to adorn her home, were foundational in shaping her taste and aesthetic throughout her life. Moore granted the estate and mansion to Nassau county upon her passing, and the property from her collection has been gifted to various institutions or remained in the family to the present.

Lot 29 Property from the Collection of Hugh W. Hubbard (1887-1975)

Left: Reverend Dr. Hugh W. Hubbard

Below: Mabel Ellis Hubbard, Rev. Hubbard’s wife, seated in front of The Four Seasons in their New York apartment, 1956.

Reverend Dr. Hugh Wells Hubbard was an American missionary whose station in China largely covered the first half of the twentieth century. Born in Turkey to missionary parents, Reverend Hubbard was initially reluctant to follow in his family’s footsteps, but found a calling in his first missions, and subsequently dedicated his life’s work to service in China across many fields. Rev. Hubbard arrived in China in 1908 to teach English and athletics under the auspices of the YMCA. After meeting and marrying his wife, Mabel Ellis, he became ordained as a minister within the Congregational Church, and continued his missionary work under the American Board. He devoted many of his efforts to promoting literacy and rural development with the guidance of Dr. Y.C. James “Jimmy” Yen. Rev. Hubbard believed that the goals of his mission were to serve as a friendly and caring companion to all he encountered, which he achieved in part through these efforts. Inspired by the power of visual arts, he undertook a project to develop educational filmstrips in his own basement for use in his teaching. This work continued in his later collaborations with renowned animator Norman Maclaren for UNESCO. In addition to his evangelical work, Rev. Hubbard also cultivated strong interests in ornithology and philately. In 1938, Reverend

Hubbard collaborated with Dr. George Wilder to publish Birds of Northeastern China. Hubbard was a skilled hunter with a keen eye, who employed his skills both to collect specimens for institutions in the United States, including the Field Museum and Museum of National History; and to amuse children with whom he was held during their wartime internment at Weixian. After returning to the United States, he published The Handbook of Early Chinese Communist Stamps (1928–1938). Rev. Hubbard’s interest in Chinese art and culture was piqued by early elective courses taken alongside his language instruction in Beijing. Throughout his tenure in China, he enjoyed diversions to curio shops and antique streets. He would visit the Palace Museum whenever in Beijing to cultivate his interest in painting, but made his purchases quite selectively. The present lot is an example of one such purchase. Rev. Hubbard acquired the paintings from the Baoding mansion of Cao Kun, a former warlord and president of the Republic of China, who was closely connected to the artist. They were removed from their mounting as a screen, and fortuitously brought by Rev. Hubbard to the United States while on furlough in 1936. They remained in his care until 1967, when he bequeathed them to his daughter Gladys Hubbard Swift, who had also served as a missionary to China.

The Late Chingwah Lee (1901-1980) Collection, San Francisco, California 好萊塢初代華影星李清華舊藏甲骨及古泉 | Lots 286-289 Perhaps most recognized for his performance in the Academy Award winning film adaption of The Good Earth, Chingwah Lee was an important scholar, collector, cultural ambassador, and community leader whose legacy endures throughout these many areas. As the industrious second-born son to a family of nine growing up in San Francisco’s Chinatown, Lee was compelled from an early age to support his family and larger community. In addition to working odd jobs, he founded a Boy Scout Troup, volunteered with the YMCA, and established the first English language paper by Chinese-Americans, The China Digest. As a natural leader and skilled speaker, he quickly stepped into roles as a spokesperson for Chinatown, and founded a tour company that offered a positive image of his community in the face of the intense discrimination and stereotyping against Chinese-Americans endemic to the United States at the time. After graduating from Berkeley with a degree in anthropology, he began to devote himself more seriously to studying Chinese art. His father, descended from a long line of art collectors, left him his collection which provided the young Lee a solid foundation for his pursuits in Chinese art connoisseurship. His efforts, including his Saturday series of art history lectures, appraisals, and editorials on Chinese art, resonate throughout the field to this day. After Lee’s death in 1980, most of his collection was famously sold through public auction, with only select pieces requiring specialized audience offered to private parties. The present offering includes such examples, now returning to the market after 40 years. 58
