n 1659, Quaker settlements appeared along the North American coast and from these sprang early communities all over North Carolina.
The first settlers in the northwest corner of Randolph county arrived between 1763-1776, settling in what was called the Granville District. Faith has always been a part of the community with Hopewell Methodist Episcopal Church — now Hopewell United Methodist Church — being officially founded in 1822. The current granite structure in use by the congregation was built after World War II. Early features in the area included Nathan Hunt Tavern, Hunt’s Store and Post Office and WC Petty & Company, a manufacturer of doors, mouldings, blinds and all kinds of dressed lumber. The 1779 tax records of Randolph County list 25 families for the Trinity Township. One of the earliest known educational institutions was Brown’s Schoolhouse, in which Allen M. Frazier served as schoolmaster. Property that is now occupied by Braxton Craven School has been in use for educational purposes for more than 150 years. In operation in the mid-1800s, Trinity College relocated to Durham in 1892, later becoming Duke University. History was made here — in 1865 Confederate troops of Gen. Joseph Johnson were the last to fight under the Confederate flag, mustering out May 1-2, 1865 after their surrender near Durham April 26. The arrival of the plank road where Archdale’s Main Street is now located opened the area to commerce. The post-Civil War era saw many changes with the advent of industry. In 1892, Archdale Roller Mill was in operation where Stickley Furniture now stands. The turn of the century came with the arrival of telephone service through High Point Telephone Exchange. Fire protection was established in 1950 after Hazel and Leroy Hancock’s home burned to the ground with no one to put it out. Guil-Rand Fire Department is now one of the largest districts in the county. In 1965 the area got an additional educational facility with the construction of Trindale Elementary School. The 1968 incorporation of Archdale was followed by the first library in 1973, a new city hall in 1974, and the first police force established in 1980. Ten years after the city’s incorporation, Creekside Park was dedicated.

Guil-Rand Fire Department Guil-Rand Fire Department was organized in 1950 to provide fire protection to what is now the greater Archdale and Trinity area. The impetus to organize the fire department arose when Hazel and Leroy Hancock’s home caught on fire and there was no one to put it out. Prior to that time, there was no organized fire and rescue service in the northwest corner of Randolph County or the unincorporated areas of southwest Guilford County. Reggie Auman was the first fire chief in the district, which required members to pay dues in order to receive services. Since it was organized Guil-Rand Fire Department has grown to the largest county fire department in terms of population served and district land covered. It is a combination department consisting of 30 full time employees, 13 part-time employees and 35 volunteers. Each year it responds to an average 3,000 calls per year which include fire, hazardous material, BLS, heavy rescue and dive team. Its five stations cover 81 square miles and serve a population of 33,000 in Randolph and Guilford counties, including 1,100 businesses and nine public schools. Current Chief Brian Cox has served since 2006.

Archdale Police Department
A
quaker settlement originally known as “Bush Hill,” Archdale spent the first 10 years of its incorporation without a formal law enforcement agency.
Archdale was originally formed as a city in 1969, having given up its charter and then reapplying for it, finally becoming a city for good. Archdale Police Department was formed in 1979 under the leadership of Dalton Fulcher, who was then the city manager. Fulcher hired Joe Howlett, a former High Point Police captain, as the city’s first chief.
Police Chief: Shannon Craddock Sworn Officers: 25 Civilians: 6 Reserve Officers: 1 Total Workforce: 32
Including Howlett, the city has had six chiefs since the department was formed. Darrell Arney followed Howlett as chief, and Larry Allen replaced Arney, becoming Archdale’s third chief. Allen previously worked as a detective, joining the city after a stint with the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office. It was around the time Fulcher hired Howlett that Gary Lewallen, who worked at Thomasville Police Department, applied to become an officer at APD. Lewallen said Fulcher had discussed the chief’s position with him despite Lewallen having just two years experience at TPD. After Lewallen said he made it clear he had no interest in the chief’s position, Howlett’s hiring set Lewallen on a course that would take him to High Point Police, Thomasville Police, a joint vice narcotics unit made up of officers from Lexington Police, TPD and the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office. Lewallen left DSCO in 1995 to join the Archdale police force, and in 2001, Lewallen became chief. He said the move to Archdale was long anticipated, as he got a chance to return home. “Not a lot of people get to be the police chief of the town they grew up in,” Lewallen said. “More than anything, that’s memorable because I got to represent the people I grew up with and around on Playground Road.” According to Lewallen, the first police station was originally located at the county building across the street from its current location at 305 Balfour Drive. The number of officers and civilians working at APD has remained consistent, according to Lewallen, who said approximately 30 people worked for the department during his years as chief. Currently, APD employs 32 full and part-time staff, including 25 sworn officers. Darrell Gibbs succeeded Lewallen, and in 2013, Shannon Craddock became the sixth police chief in Archdale. A Thomasville native, Craddock joined APD in 1999 as a patrol officer. He was promoted to captain before his appointment as chief.

Places of Worship After 1659 Quaker settlements crystallized along the North American coast and from these sprang up other communities. In 1857 Poplar Ridge Friends Meeting was established. The first church buildings built in Archdale were Archdale Friends Meeting in 1924 and Archdale Methodist Church (now Archdale United Methodist Church) in 1925. Both
congregations had been meeting in the Archdale School building. In 1947 First Baptist Church of Archdale was organized. The first place of worship in Trinity was Hopewell United Methodist Church built in 1812. Saint Mary’s United Methodist Church, constructed in 1942, was named for charter member Mary Ann Gibson.

Bush Hill Heritage Festival
he Bush Hill Heritage Festival was held in 1986 by the Archdale-Trinity Chamber of Commerce as the bicentennial celebration of the Quaker settlement known as Bush Hill. Balloon rides were a part of the first Bush Hill Heritage Festival in 1986.
The event was such a huge success that it has come to herald the arrival of fall for more than 30 years. Selected by Southeast Tourism Society as a Top 20 event in 2010, the festival has expanded into an annual event that typically welcomes a crowd of 20,000 locals and visitors. The community that was once known as Bush Hill has expanded – just a bit — and so has the festival. As the footprint has expanded over the years, new features have been added to the festival including popular favorites such as the Big Wheel Race and Classic Cars & Trucks show. As a treat for visitors, entertainment by local favorites appear throughout the day on the Main, Gospel and Children’s stages. At this year’s Bush Hill Heritage Festival, set for 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9, the ArchdaleTrinity Chamber of Commerce is expecting more than 260 vendors who will offer all types of food, homemade crafts, artwork, raffle tickets, pottery, baskets and more.

reekside Park’s Fun Fourth figures prominently on the area’s social calendar. Boasting more than 6,000 last year, the annual July 4 celebration is promoted by Randolph County Economic Development Corporation as the best fireworks display in the county. Archdale Parks and Recreation continues to add features to the 100-acre park known as the city’s “crown jewel” with features suitable to residents and visitors of all ages and skill levels. At any given time, disc golfers take advantage of the 18hole course designed for recreational as well as tournament play. The course also has a 6-hole novice loop designed for beginners and senior adults. Creekside Park’s 1.24 mile orienteering course consists of 12 control points in which an individual or group can test their navigation skills through diverse terrain. rom the early days of football at Trinity College, to recent state champions at the local high schools, the town of Trinity has seen its share of sports success stories.
A career minor league infielder and manager, Burge played from the 1930s50s. He was on the doorstep of major league baseball in 1943, but was called into service for World War II. He returned to baseball in 1946.
In 1888, Trinity College made headlines when it challenged the University of North Carolina to what is considered to be the first game of modern football in the South. The game took place on Thanksgiving Day at the state fairgrounds in Raleigh. Trinity won 16-0, beginning a rivalry that continues to this day. Trinity College moved out of the area to Durham in 1892, later becoming Duke University in 1924.
English was fortunate enough to make it to the majors in a career that spanned from 1931-1944. He played for the New York Giants, Detroit Tigers, Boston Bees and Brooklyn Dodgers. The middle infielder had a batting average of .245.
Trinity has been home to many great athletes for decades. Some have stood out on the professional level including baseball stars Lester Burge and Gilbert English.
A Winston Cup Series champion in 2000, Labonte took to the track for the first time at NASCAR’s highest level in 1991. That same year he won a Busch
Trinity High School graduates Bobby Labonte and Brian Vickers put Trinity on the map with their NASCAR careers.

Series title. He has more than 729 career starts and 21 wins in the Cup Series. Labonte continues to race part-time. A native of nearby Thomasville, Vickers graduated from Trinity High in 2002. A threetime winner in the Cup Series, Vickers ran his first race at Charlotte the following year. In 2003, he was crowned the Busch Series champion. Recent decades have seen success at the local high schools. In the late 1980s, the Trinity Lady Bulldogs secured two state championships in basketball and another in volleyball. In boys basketball, Trinity won the 2004 state championship. The landscape of high school athletics changed in 2008 with the opening of Wheatmore High School. While football has taken a hit with the split in numbers, other sports have thrived. Both Trinity and Wheatmore have gotten individual state championships in wrestling, and the Lady Warriors’ volleyball team has twice made a state title game appearance.

Linbrook Hall
here would you have to travel to visit one of the largest privately-owned homes in the southeastern United States? Located in Trinity, the 60-room classical revival Linbrook Hall was built by Trinity residents Jerry and Linda Neal near the location where his great-grandfather Edd Hoover set up a farm in 1905. Linbrook is appropriately named for Linda Neal and the brook that runs across the property. The Neals have filled the home with furnishings which may have been found in an 1830s European mansion. In the downstairs living room is a 12-edged table built in 1864 in Stratfordupon-Avon, William Shakespeare’s hometown. The 15-foot ceilings make for wonderful acoustics for a Steinway piano, one of only 25 built like it in the world.
30
Guest wing, west lawn or the south lawn patio offer multiple settings for a wedding ceremony, dinner reception, or private family event. Likewise, the rich interiors of Linbrook Hall can turn a small gathering into a grand affair. The 32,000 square foot home is situated on a hill not far from the Historic Hoover Home, where Edd Hoover first built a tworoom house in 1905. More than 400 acres, Linbrook Heritage Estate also includes the Jerry Neal Antique Tractor and Industrial Museum. Linbrook Hall is located at 5297 Snyder Country Road, Trinity. Tours are by appointment only. For more information call 336-861-6959 or visit LinbrookHeritageEstate.com.
