Spring Brings New and Expanded Programs Excitement is in the air here at IALHA. Our new magazine, The Iberian Horse, just finished its first year, and the “2016 Year in Review” is a beautiful keepsake issue. We begin our second year with this issue which includes some really fun information and interesting articles. I hope you enjoy it. Congratulations to all of our USDF winners featured in the magazine. Our “Year in Review” deadlines precluded us from including the 2016 USDF winners in that issue, but please review them here and congratulate them on a job well done. The IALHA is busy this spring working on bringing you new and expanded programs. Our youth membership program has once again received a generous grant from USEF and will continue to offer free youth memberships in 2017, along with free saddle pads while they last. To apply, see the application on our webpage at ialha.org. The High Score Ribbon Program has been expanded to offer even more ribbons this year. Open shows wishing to recognize our beautiful breed can find an application on the website. Reining, working equitation, driving, dressage competitions, etc., may all apply for the ribbons (one ribbon per show). Horses must be registered with the IALHA and either the owner or rider must be a member to qualify. This is a great way to have our horses recognized at many open shows and draw attention to their great performances.

The IALHA National Show will be bringing you some new and exciting things in the fall! The 2017 IALHA National Show will be held Oct. 10-15 at the Great Southwest Equestrian Center in Katy, Texas. Located just outside of Houston, this great venue brings our show back to the center of the country for the first time since 2014. As I write this, the final premium is still being put together, but we will have a USDF dressage show and USDF/USEF dressage sport horse breeding, USEF performance and halter classes. APSL Inspection will also be available, and this year we will be holding an ANCCE show! Stay tuned for announcements on social media as several other exciting new things are in the works for Katy, Texas. The IALHA 2017 Art Contest also brings a new twist this year as we are going to select TWO winners! See the website for the details. Entries will be taken until June 1, 2017. The IALHA Art Contest draws entries from all over the world, and we have many exceptional artists featured each year. Please watch social media for entries. We will begin to post them as they come in. I know the weather here in Illinois has been crazy this past winter, and your weather may have been too. As spring blooms and summer arrives, I hope each one of you find a bit of extra time to enjoy your horses. FPSH President’s Letter By Cameron English

Just the Facts As we enter into 2017, I cannot help but think about the chaos and turbulence occurring all around us in world current events. Upheaval and transition seem to be the new normal in recent events we have seen transpire on the world stage. One fascinating aspect of these events is the recent popular rise and impact related to fake news, also known as alternative facts. If you follow posts on social media, you could come to some amazing conclusions about the world. Even our major media broadcast news cannot seem to get the facts straight. Which brings me to one observation I have about our passion for horses. Time spent with my horses is one of the few reprieves I can count on to be an escape from the crazy, mixed-up lifestyle ravaging around us. I have come to appreciate the honesty of my horses. One thing I know I can always count on: The horse is always honest, real and transparent with its partner. One trainer that I respect very well, Bob Loomis, once said, “A horse will always tell you what it is going to do before he does it, you just have to be listening.” Whether it’s a twitch of the ear, a swish of the tail, the tensing of its flank, in my experience, the horse is always sending an honest message. Many people recognize the term “horse whisperer.” However, in my experience, the best horsemen are able to listen as well as perceive mental and emotional state. I have observed that people retreat into their barn to “ground” themselves. We crave the need for something real, unadulterated and legit. This, I believe, is part of why we are drawn to the horse. Taking this concept a step further, I am convinced that the Spanish horse breeders, trainers and riders have discovered the best of all horse breeds. I am sure you will agree that the P.R.E., more so than any breed I have worked with, is honest, noble and giving. As I meet new people that have found our breed, I find a similar, almost universal truth articulated by the new enthusiast. It’s typically stated as, “The Spanish horse is such an amazing partner, 8 |

An Amateur’s National Show Experience: Going to the IALHA Nationals is a must for any amateur. It sounds intimidating, after all it is NATIONALS! But when you arrive, you find the staff, competitors and judges are as kind and welcoming as any at an intimate local show. Everyone is sincere in their desire to help make your show experience positive, fun and educational. They share your victories, encourage you for the next class, lend a hand in the barn or just give your boots a quick wipe before entering the arena. The judges are kind, knowledgeable and fair – professional, of course, but always with a smile. At Nationals, you realize you are with likeminded people, Iberian horse lovers. It’s a chance to learn new skills, experience new venues, and the educational seminars offered throughout the show are invaluable. Even the vendors will help answer questions. As an older amateur, I thought IALHA Nationals was something out of my reach … but I now know, it is within the reach of everyone! – Kim Johan-Nass

I liken it to being positioned at the start of the “hockey stick” curve. I am convinced we are starting up the steep slope of the curve and that in the coming few years we will see a rapid increase in the number of horse enthusiasts for the Spanish horse. In anticipation of this steep acceptance curve of our beloved horse, I want to share some of the new initiatives The FPSH has committed to developing in 2017: ࡟࡟Launch of our online Carta Mundial web-based registration ࡟࡟Youth rider scholarship program (introducing young riders to P.R.E. horses) ࡟࡟Clinics and training events ࡟࡟Tour of Spain – the best of the breed tour hosted by Maria O’Brien ࡟࡟Revision (we are hitting record numbers in 2017 – a very good sign) ࡟࡟New and improved FPSH website ࡟࡟Ongoing partnership with the IALHA, including The Iberian Horse magazine and events ࡟࡟The FPSH Stallion Auction ࡟࡟Spanish horse rescue

It is the mission of The Foundation to promote the P.R.E. horse, and we feel that participation in equine disciplines at which this breed excels is an excellent way to present the breed to the public. In recognition of those who will be competing, the Norte Cup award will be given to the P.R.E. horse and rider combination scoring the highest median score in the national levels (Training, First, Second, Third and Fourth Levels) and the Fuego de Cárdenas Cup award will be given for the international levels (Prix St. Georges, Intermediate I, Intermediate II, and Grand Prix). Winners will receive a commemorative trophy, a championship cooler, and the horse’s name will be engraved on a brick permanently placed in the Walkway of Remembrance at the International Resource Center for the Pure Spanish Horse in Albuquerque, N.M. Their names will also be engraved on plaques placed on the perpetual Fuego de Cárdenas and Norte trophies on

display at the International Resource Center for the Pure Spanish Horse. The determination of the winners will follow the same formula as the USDF All-Breeds Awards. The owner of the P.R.E. must be a member of The Foundation for the Pure Spanish Horse at the time of the award. In keeping with our mandate that The Foundation puts the preservation, protection and promotion of the P.R.E. as its primar y consideration, the P.R.E. horse may be registered with any recognized P.R.E. registr y (P.R.E. Mundial Cría Caballar, ACPRE, LG ANCCE, etc.) Copies of breed papers must be submitted to The Foundation prior to the awards being given. For purposes of the awards, the show year shall be considered to be the same as the USDF show year (Oct. 1-Oct. 1) Score requirements are as follows:

FUEGO DE CÁRDENAS & Norte Cups Patricia Ashbey and Simia De Lana Simia de L ana , owne d by Patricia Ashbey, exceeded all expectations in 2016 when she made her FEI debut this spring at the age of 7 with Grand Prix traine r A ndrea Velas (USDF Bronze/ Silver/Gold medalist and also one of few trainers to achieve all corresponding M u s i c a l Fr e e s t y l e B a r s). W h a t wa s supposed to be a season of “getting her toes wet” at the FEI level turned into winning FEI High Score at almost every show she went to, competing at Prix St. Georges and Intermediate I, achieving (ABOVE) Fuego de Cárdenas Cup Winner, Intermediate 1 musical freestyle scores up to 78%, and her qualif ying for Dressage at Devon where she pulled off a top-10 finish in the Intermediate I Freestyle. When the dust settled at the end of the competition season, Maya and Andrea were also USDF Reserve Champion Intermediate 1 Freestyle Horse of the Year. They also garnered the USDF All-Breeds awards at every level for which they were eligible. Maya is now taking a sabbatical from upper-level competition until her Grand Prix debut hopefully early in 2018.

Bob Chapeski and Galante SG Galante SG is a 2011 gelding bred by Spanish Gate Andalusians in Victor, Mont. He had a rewarding 2016 show season, winning high score awards at several shows with scores to 78% under international judges. At the IALHA National Show, he wo n N a ti o n a l C h a m p i o n s h i p s a t b oth Training and First Level and the High Score Dressage Award. Galante finished the show season a week later at the USDF Region 6 Finals, where he finished third at Training Level and four th at First Level. In 2017 Galante will compete in USDF Region 6 at Second and Third Levels. 14 |

FUEGO DE CÁRDENAS & Norte Cups Lee Burton and Enebro XIV Lee Burton and Enebro XIV began their relationship in 2009 when Juan Matute (Spanish Olympic rider) called to let her know that he had found a great 5-year-old P.R.E. dressage prospect for sale in Spain. Lee agreed to purchase the beautiful grey gelding sight unseen and together, with the help of many fabulous trainers, they have been on an incredible journey. Fast-forward to 2016, the pair completed a lifelong dream of Lee’s to compete in the Grand Prix Level at the National Dressage Championship. The pair have traveled the levels together from First Level through Grand Prix. 2016 was their best year yet, including qualifying for the Regional (ABOVE) Fuego de Cardinas Cup Runner Up, Grand Prix Championships at Intermediate II, Grand Prix and Grand Prix Freestyle finishing third, fourth and second respectively, qualifying them for Nationals at the Intermediate II and Freestyle. Lee admits it was a “thrill of a lifetime” to compete in the Alltech Arena with some of the best horse and rider combinations in the country. They finished in the top 10 in both classes. This is the second P.R.E. Lee has competed to this level. She earned her Bronze, Silver and Gold Medals on her much beloved P.R.E., Amando IV. Lee is looking forward to continuing the journey in 2017.

Erika Nicole Wyatt and Inspector Mar 2016 was an amazing year for me in terms of my journey in dressage, and I owe this all to my friend and partner, Inspector Mar (or Marcos the Magnificent, as I am fond of calling him). Our first show season together was in 2015, and it was his first time on the center line. From Training Level last year until Third Level this year, his talent and ability to learn has been consistently better than my own. Marcos is the kind of horse that little girls ride in their dreams at night. I wake up in the morning counting down the minutes (ABOVE) Norte Cup Runner Up, Second Level until I can ride him again. Marcos easily helped me earn my USDF Bronze Medal in 2016, and along the way he has proven himself to be honest, willing and patient. He exemplifies the extraordinary character of the P.R.E., and he is one of my most treasured friends. We are schooling the PSG (Prix St. Georges) at home now and looking for a trainer who can help us go on to earn both our Silver and Gold Medals. I think we are both excited for that journey! vTIH 16 |

A Breeder’s National Show Experience: If you ask a lot of breeders why they show, most would give you the obvious answer: That it’s good business. It helps them sell horses and breedings. But I think there is a deeper, even more important reason. It makes you a better breeder. It sharpens your eye and gives you a better indication of what you have and what you are striving to produce. One of our early mentors told us, “If you need a show judge to tell you whether or not you have a good horse, you aren’t much of a breeder!” While there is some truth in that, if you take an average of many judges and many other breeders, you will get a good assessment of where and how you stack up and will be less “barn blind” to your shortcomings. If you get past the competitive part and take the time to talk to other exhibitors and Experience Nationals other breeders, you will soon learn that everyone has something to teach you. Most breeders will tell you that their goal is to produce top-quality horses (correct conformation, good temperament and excellent movement). Saying that is easy; accomplishing it takes insight, experience and sometimes even a little luck. The show followed the Portuguese tradition of showing breeding farm progeny. Young horses and mares were shown in-hand, around the triangle, and individually. Mature stallions, those 4 years and older, were shown under saddle then evaluated in-hand as well. Mares are not required to be shown under saddle; however, there is a ridden mare class for owners that do wish to compete their mare in a performance class. The judges placed great emphasis on functional movement and presence of exemplary Lusitano breed type. The IALHA and PSL Commission approved the Americas’ Lusitano Cup along with the Associação Portuguesa de Criadores do Cavalo Puro Sangue Lusitano (APSL), who also approved the official judges. The APSL judges Nuno Santos Pereira, Yves Manzanares and Dr. Orpheu Ávila were flown in from Portugal, France and Brazil, respectively. The process to become an APSL judge requires rigorous training and years of experience with the Lusitano breed. The mares were presented with shaved manes and shaved upper tails. The stallions were shown with braided manes and tails. Mares 4 years and older were only eligible to be shown if they had produced a foal. under saddle as well as in-hand. One of the most prestigious classes was “Descendants of Stallions,” where five offspring of a stallion out of at least three different mares were exhibited. The judges were looking for uniformity of type and strong functional conformation that exemplify the Lusitano breed. Here are some of the most lauded titles, some of which also came with generous cash awards: Champion Stallion of Show: Limonero MOR owned by Las Morerias earned $2,500. Champion Mare of Show: Insulina MOR owned by Las Morerias earned $2,500.

The Lusitano breed has special award designations: Gold Medal and Silver Medal. The Gold Medal award indicates that a horse is exemplary for the Lusitano breed. The Silver Medal award indicates a horse is very close to exemplary for the breed. These awards are noted on a horse’s permanent record with APSL and count toward earning further recognition in the registry as Recommended Stallion/Mare and Stallions/Mares of Merit. Gold Medal Awards went to: Jubilosa MOR, Joaninha II Sernadinha, Julia DC, Insulina MOR, Golordrina MOR, Greta MOR, Um Dia Do Retiro and Xalma MOR. Silver Medal Awards went to: La Perla Negra DC, Legionario DC, Jupiter Sernadinha, Hamlet DC, Hobbit Interagro, Dandy MOR, Funcho, Vencedor JB and Faca MOR.

A Youth Competitor’s National Show Experience: At the 2016 IALHA National Show Tyson Gillette, age 11, and his friend Audrey Guess, age 14, got to show Tyson's Half-Andalusian mare, Seda. What a great experience for two youth riders at their first IALHA show! The organizers, competitors, vendors, judges and officials were all incredibly positive and willing to help the youth riders. The kids spent many hours walking through the barns, meeting people and asking questions about everything horse related. They each competed in two classes and both of them won a National Championship and a Reserve National Championship. The beauty of the Iberian horses had both kids excited about watching and learning more about the breeds. The variety of classes showed them how many different things they can work towards in their riding goals. Before the end of the show, Tyson and Audrey were both making plans for what classes they want to ride in at the 2017 Nationals. Even having the truck break down and having to fly back to Arizona on Monday, leaving Seda and mom in Utah, did not dampen their joy or determination to continue showing. The following are some of our members’ comments regarding their Dressage Finals Experiences.

Torrey Wilkenson: In November 2016, my Half-Andalusian mare, Talisman BHF, and I headed back to Lexington, Ky., for our third USDF Finals. We competed at Second Level in 2013, placing fourth. PSG (Prix St. Georges) and 4th Level Freestyle in 2015, placing 10th and seventh, respectively, and receiving the IALHA AllBreeds FEI High Score. This past year, we competed in Intermediate I and Intermediate I Freestyle, placing 12th and eighth, respectively, and again receiving the IALHA All-Breeds FEI High Score. My mare, Tali, was very nervous in the Alltech Arena, but put in solid performances to get us a turn in the awards ceremony. All three of our trips to the Finals have been wonderful experiences. The venue is amazing, not only because it’s iconic in the horse industry, but also because the arenas, barns and surrounding grounds are so beautiful and well-maintained. The USDF and its sponsors really go all out to make the Finals feel like a national championship with decorations, awards, vendors and events. I always look forward to the chance to qualify and have the opportunity to compete against my peers in the Finals. 26 |

Patricia McVary: At the beginning of the 2016 show season, if I had been asked if I planned on going to Finals, I would have chuckled at the thought. I h a d r e tu r n e d to r i d i n g a f te r c a r e e r a n d children, and I was still tr ying to get more show experience. Just over a year prior, my traine r, Kathr yn Fle ming- Kuhn, had found my P.R.E gelding Aureo (“Rio”) for me. The learning curve was steep. Still, at Regionals we were having wonder ful rides and placed in our qualifying classes. Finals was a reality! It is difficult to describe the atmosphere that week at the Kentucky Horse Park. There were so many horses and riders, all experiencing varying degrees of excitement. Rio, true to his Andalusian temperament, was stellar. I, on the other hand, had a terrible case of show nerves. The highlight of the weekend was our Third Level Freestyle, where we were able to ride in the Alltech Arena. How amazing it was to be there! As we trotted around waiting for the bell, I took a moment to appreciate the opportunity to ride www.the-iberian-horse.com

where so many talented people were showing. Rio is not intimidated by a large venue, and he loves his music, so we had fun “dancing” to the Spanish influenced freestyle created by Melanie Michalak. We placed 10th! (The next day I found out we were also All-Breeds High Score for the

IALHA at the AA national level.) Rio looked very handsome in his baby blue ribbon, and I was so proud of him. As we waited to re-enter the arena for our victory lap, I leaned over to give him a hug and whisper a thank you to him for being my partner in this thrilling adventure. Issue 1 | 2017

2016 US Dressage Finals Lisa McDowell: McDowell Equestrian’s path to the 2016 US Dressage Finals … We have competed our P.R.E.s in national breed competitions and local dressage events since 2006. But 10 years later, our National Breed and Best Movement Champions Hielo MOR - Qualified Stallion and his daughter Camomila MCD were competing

amongst the top dressage horses in the nation with Nicole Harrington, achieving year-end average scores in the 70s. We were so fortunate to be able to participate and perform well at the US Dressage Nationals, USDF Regionals and Andalusian World Cup last year. We were awarded five individual USDF Year-End High Point Awards for the P.R.E., made the USPRE COPA Team and are ranked 6th – 23rd in the

We we re extremely honored to have competed amongst other exceptional athletes and have our mare Camomila bring home the title of First Level Freestyle Open Reserve Champion 71.72% and the High Score Breed Award IALHA National Level, Open Division at the 2016 US National Dressage Finals. We are preparing and working hard to achieve our best with our P.R.E.s in 2017. In 2001, I had no idea that I would be dedicated to our beautiful P.R.E.s or aspire to own a global dressage athlete. But the grace of the Spanish horse drew me in the moment I realized their versatility, temperament and natural attributes that enable them to excel in piaffe and passage work. USDF ALL-BREEDS Awards

THE USDF ALL-BREEDS AWARDS PROGRAM WAS INSTITUTED IN 1982. THERE WERE ONLY 12 PARTICIPATING BREEDS AT THAT TIME. THIS YEAR, A TOTAL OF 66 BREEDS AND PERFORMANCE ORGANIZ ATIONS PARTICIPATED IN THE 2016 ADEQUAN/USDF ALL-BREEDS YEAR-END AWARDS PROGRAM. PROUDLY, IALHA HAS PARTICIPATED IN THIS PROGRAM FOR WELL OVER A DECADE. LAST YEAR, THE IALHA BOARD VOTED TO INCREASE THE AWARD PLACING FROM CHAMPION, RESERVE CHAMPION AND THIRD TO INCLUDE FOURTH AND FIFTH AS WELL.

The 2016 year experienced an increase in participation with a total of 125 winners. The 30 |

purebreds achieved 32 Champions, 24 Reserve Champions, 14 Third, 11 Fourth and nine Fifth place awards. Both the purebred Andalusian and the HalfAndalusian winners participated in Open, Adult Amateur, Junior/Young Rider, Musical Freestyle, and Vintage Cup Divisions. My horse is registered with two All-Breeds awards participating organization (POs). Can I earn awards from both registries? No. For All-Breeds awards purposes, a horse may be declared with only one PO at a time. My horse is declared for All-Breeds awards, but I would like to change the declaration to a different PO. Is this possible? Yes. You’ll need to submit an updated AllBreeds Awards Declaration Form along with the applicable breed-registry papers and a $50 declaration change fee. Do scores from breed-restricted competitions count toward All-Breeds awards? Yes.

How can I verify my horse’s All-Breeds awards declaration? Log in to USDFScores.com and view your horse’s summary page. I have met all of the award requirements, and my PO has marked my horse as eligible for AllBreeds awards, but he does not appear in the standings. What should I do? The preliminary standings are updated weekly, and it may simply be a timing issue. I declared my horse for All-Breeds awards last year. Do I have to re-declare him every year? Once a horse is declared for the All-Breeds Awards Program, that declaration stays in place for future competition years. However, you must meet the score and membership requirements for both USDF and the PO every year in order to remain eligible for awards. I earned scores at shows in April and May. If I declare my horse for All-Breeds awards in July, will those earlier scores count toward the awards? Yes. Once a horse is declared, all scores earned in the current competition year may be eligible for the awards, even if the scores were earned prior to the date the declaration was made. USDF ALL-BREEDS Awards What You Need to Know to Keep Your IALHA Horse's Status Accepted To be eligible for the IALHA All-Breeds Awards requires proof of current year membership in the IALHA for the current owner of the horse, and that the horse be registered with the IALHA. The biggest problem we see for the horses being accepted is lack of owner’s current year membership with the IALHA. When owners have not renewed their memberships, the horse is marked not accepted, and this unacceptable mark stays even when the owner later decides to join the association. This is because the IALHA membership office does not automatically know

that a given membership renewal is specific for the purpose of having a member’s horse accepted into the All-Breeds Award Program. Therefore, the IALHA All-Breeds representative does not receive the updated information that is needed for the horse to be eligible. If an owner is renewing his membership to change his horse from unaccepted to accepted status in the All-Breeds program, it is the owner’s responsibility to inform the staff at the IALHA membership office of this situation. The office will forward the information to the IALHA All-Breeds representative when they are asked to do so. However, if they are not asked to do so, they will not know that the horse’s owner is hoping that the All-Breeds representative will be informed.

It is also the responsibility of the owner to check early on for the status of his horse and find out how to correct the situation. The IALHA All-Breeds representative has hard copies and computer data on the acceptance of the horses and the reason they were not accepted. We need the help of the owners to make things run smoothly. Everyone at the IALHA, which includes the IALHA Membership/Registry, Robin McCabe;

IALHAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s president, Janita Smith; and the AllBreeds representative, Linda Denniston, are striving to accept all horses to celebrate the great performance of the breed. We all want to see our dressage members take par t in this wonderful program and be recognized for their achievements. THE 2017 USEF ANNUAL MEETING AND AWARDS GALA HELD MANY EXCITING UNVEILINGS. THE ANNUAL MEETING, HELD JAN. 11-14, 2017, IN LEXINGTON, KY., WAS A GREAT PLACE FOR ATTENDEES TO LEARN ABOUT CURRENT AFFAIRS WITHIN THE USEF ORGANIZATION. THE GALA CELEBRATED THE ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE MANY USEF MEMBERS FROM ALL OF THE AFFILIATE GROUPS. SOME OF THESE ANNOUNCEMENTS WERE NO SURPRISE, WHILE OTHERS WERE VERY MUCH SO!

The sessions updated those in attendance on a great deal of information. One of the topics discussed was the status of the Officials Education Rule, which is still being refined. USEF is still talking with affiliates to ensure the best methods are going to be used to educate the officials based on the varied needs of each breed and discipline. The goal is to keep it as affordable as possible while providing optimal education. Thanks to some generous donations, it looks like costs will be on the low side. The new U.S. Center for SafeSport will be opening in February. Its purpose is to create consistency among all sports for dealing specifically with physical and sexual misconduct in sport and to promote athlete well-being. The Center will assume all responsibility for investigating, charging and penalizing any reports of assault. The USEF was originally in charge of handling those matters that came up through equestrian sport. Now USEF will only have to report cases to the U.S. Center for SafeSport, and leave the rest to them. 42 |

USEF was happy to report that the new system for handling the addition or changing of rules has turned out to be quite efficient. The timeliness in which these new rules are being finalized and put into action is a great benefit to all affiliates and their members. USEF also announced the implementation of its strategic plan. Its goal is to be a more customer serviceoriented organization, a group that collaborates better within itself and among its affiliates and provides better benefits to its members, all while continuing to preserve equestrian sport through fairness, safety and enjoyment. USEF has rebranded itself as US Equestrian. USEF is still its business identifier, but US Equestrian is its new brand and logo. Its new vision was unveiled: “To bring the joy of horse sports to as many people as possible.” This has led to the new USEF “Discover

the Joy of Horse Sports Campaign,” which is a fantastic collection of various horse and horse sport-related images incorporated with the word JOY. These ads will be used in a variety of marketing avenues to spread the JOY of what it means to be an equestrian. A beautiful photo of our very own member Jennifer Stewart and her mare Fresona ROY was chosen by USEF out of more than 50 Andalusian/Lusitano photo submissions to create one of these JOY ads. The newly redesigned USEF website was launched that week. The redesigned website will be easier to navigate and will provide better access to member needs and benefits. USEF also created an online Learning Center. Members have access to educational materials covering a wide range of topics related to all of the breeds and disciplines. Videos cover how-tos of horse care, training, safety related to concussions, your first competition and so much more. The highly informative and upbeat annual meeting was followed by the awards gala. Brenda Forsythe, Colleen Wright, Janita Smith, Kim Johan-Nass and Jennifer Stewart, along with their significant others and some friends, all came eager to receive their awards. At a pre-cocktail party, arranged and hosted by IALHA President Janita Smith and her husband Bill, the group met to get to know each other better, talk of their experiences and celebrate their accomplishments. This camaraderie continued at the banquet cocktail party. Kim Johan-Nass said, “What a privilege to be able to celebrate, with family and friends, all the fun and accomplishments we did together in 2016! Add to that great food and plenty of horse talk, and you have the perfect evening!” Kim and her lovely grey purebred, Vendito RJ, won the Andalusian/Lusitano Amateur English Pleasure, Open and Amateur Western Pleasure, and Specialty divisions.

On Fire, a beautiful bay gelding, owned and ridden by Colleen Wright, won in the Half-Andalusian/Lusitano Specialty, Amateur and Open Western Pleasure, and the Amateur and Open English Pleasure HalfAndalusian/Lusitano divisions, which earned them the Urco Trophy. “Attending my first USEF Awards Gala was absolutely amazing. What a special night to recognize so many spectacularly talented horses from all over the nation,” said Colleen. “When my horse, On Fire, received the Urco Trophy for Grand Champion

I am so honored and humbled. I fall in love with the Iberian horse more and more with every ride and event.” Throughout the awards presentations, all cheered for each other as they each went on stage to receive the awards that they and their wonderful horses had worked for all year. Jennifer Stewart was there to receive the awards for Royal Horse Farm’s horses. Fresona ROY was the IALHA’s Grand Champion Andalusian/Lusitano Horse, earning her the Gandor Trophy. Other awards earned by Royal Horse Farm included Breeder of the Year and Owner of the Year. Its stallion Dobladillo II won Sire of the Year, due to the success of all his offspring that competed this year. Jennifer also picked up ribbons for HalfAndalusian/Lusitano Driving and Halter Horse, RHF Jasmin; the ribbon for Fugaz ROY, who was the purebred Andalusian/ Lusitano Driving Horse; and Fresona ROY’s ribbon for purebred Andalusian/ Lusitano Halter Horse. Brenda Forsythe had this to say about her experience that night and the events that led to her being on that stage to pick up the ribbon for her mare Mediterraneo's Venezia, who won the purebred Andalusian/Lusitano Junior Horse Western Pleasure division: “I have been riding my whole life. I raised and trained my first Andalusian, a 5-yearold mare from Gutierrez Andalusians named Mediterranio’s Venezia, from one month of age,” said Brenda. “When I had to retire my Dutch Warmblood gelding Kadence from stadium jumping and eventually from dressage, I didn’t think I would ever feel the same bond with another horse again. ethic, not to mention just beautiful inside and out. I never imagined this horse that I have trained and I could become national champions! Going to Lexington and walking across that stage to accept our USEF National Champion Horse of the Year award was a dream come true for me. I still can't really believe it! It was also great sharing this special night with the other IALHA winners, a wonderful group of people who celebrated each other’s accomplishments. Salón Internacional del Caballo (SICAB) is the vanguard for promoting the breed globally – a week-long international horse show and salute to P.R.E.s that has been held annually in the city of Seville for 26 years. The world-class event has been produced by the Asociación Nacional de Criadores de Caballos de Pura Raza Española (the National Purebred Spanish Horse Breeders’ Association, ANCCE) at the Palacio de Exposiciones y Congresos convention center since 1991. in 1972 and boasts a membership of more than 1,000 P.R.E. breeders and numerous associations worldwide. Since its inception, the association has played a key role in preserving the purity of P.R.E. bloodlines and was appointed by Spain’s Ministry of Agriculture to manage the official P.R.E. studbook. Each year P.R.E. horse competitions culminate at SICAB for an impressive gathering of the best of the breed. The main event attractions for breeders and buyers are the Spanish National Championship finals for P.R.E. stallions and mares (conformation classes for horses ages 2 to 7 and under saddle performances for horses 4 and older) and the World P.R.E. Championships. To further promote the breed’s versatility in equine sports, the ANCCE Cup finals for dressage, alta escuela (high school dressage), doma vaquera (Spanish cowboy), carriage driving, and show jumping also are held throughout the week. Rounding out the schedule is a non-competitive daily show called Espectaculo that is an exquisite display of P.R.E. performances at liberty and in a variety of disciplines.

The spread of the disease was linked to infected zebras that were imported to Spain from Namibia and was not fully eradicated from Spain, Portugal and Morocco until 1991. During the years that aggressive measures were taken to eliminate AHS, Spain’s borders were closed to equines.

The history of SICAB SICAB evolved from the Campeonato de España (Spanish National Championship) that began in 1980 at Real Club Pineda in Seville – a prestigious country club that was established more than 70 years ago with equestrian events at the center of its social activities. The Championship was held annually through 1986 until future events were abruptly cancelled when Spain’s equine world was devastated by an outbreak of African Horse Sickness (AHS), a viral disease transmitted by insects that causes respiratory and circulatory impairment, Issue 1 | 2017

Equestrian events in Spain were banned until 1990 and all sales of P.R.E.s abroad were prohibited until 1992. When the ban on horse competitions and gatherings was lifted, ANCCE organized a horse show at the convention center in Seville in 1990. It was called EXPOGAN and was open to P.R.E.s and other breeds. The following year, ANCCE entered a long-term agreement with the convention center and created a P.R.E.-only trade fair, which was the beginning of SICAB in 1991. It was the organization’s mission to showcase the beauty and disposition of Spanish horses, to preserve the breed by reviving the breeding industry in the aftermath of the AHS tragedy, and to shed the traditional “for aristocrats only” perception thus making P.R.E.s more accessible to people domestically and internationally. The inaugural SICAB event was a tremendous success with approximately 100,000 visitors, 500 horses and 20 vendors occupying two-thirds of the convention center. It grew rapidly, and in 1992 the entire convention center was needed to accommodate the participants and visitors. In 1993, SICAB was officially proclaimed an international event, and by 1997 the ANCCE Cup competitions were added to the program to showcase the versatility of the breed in equestrian sports. ANCCE leadership sights remained steadfastly set on the future of SICAB as it continued to grow over the years. Excellence has been at the heart of SICAB since the very beginning. “We strive to maintain the achievements of the past 26 years,” says Juan Tirado Aguda, president of ANCCE. “SICAB is where the most important awards are granted to the finest riders and horses.”

SICAB today With a stunning city backdrop of orange tree-lined streets, horse-drawn carriages, horse statues, cathedrals, palaces and other architectural works of art, SICAB has grown exponentially since its trade fair beginnings and is recognized as the premier Spanish horse event globally. Last year’s event boasted 1,069 horses from 342 stud farms, 321 vendors, 223,723 visitors and a television audience that reached 92 countries. SICAB’s tremendous economic impact (an estimated 30 million euros annually) ranks it the 52 |

third most important event in the city of Seville after Semana Santa (Easter holy week) and Feria de Abril (April Fair). The six-day event is a must-attend spectacle for all Spanish horse owners and enthusiasts. True to the founding vision, it continues to be a stalwart celebration of P.R.E.s that is a sophisticated merging of histor y, competition, showmanship, breeders, horse buyers, equestrian professionals, horse enthusiasts, equine-related shopping and entertainment. In keeping with tradition, it is endorsed by Spanish royalty (King Felipe VI is the current honorary president) and regularly attracts other political figures as well as celebrities from the music, film and sports worlds. Riders from the Spanish National Dressage Team (past and present), the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art in Jerez and other Spanish dressage competitors are regularly seen throughout the week in support of the event, including Rafael Soto, Ignacio Rambla, Ignacio Lopez, Juan Matute, Juan Manuel Munoz and José Antonio García Mena. SICAB occupies 246,062 square feet of space with most of the activities taking place in three indoor exhibition pavilions. One pavilion is dedicated to beautifully appointed breeder hospitality booths for meetings and socializing, breeder-related vendors, a P.R.E. genealogy/stud book booth, the ANCCE office and the arena where the preliminary conformation competitions take place. The second pavilion houses equine commercial displays and vendors, and also includes an arena for doma vaquera, alta escuela and exhibitions. The main arena with an adjacent warm-up arena is located in the third pavilion

where the entertainment performances, dressage, conformation finals, show jumping and carriage driving competitions are held. Temporary horse stalls for stallions and a practice arena are located outdoors near the main arena pavilion. The mares are housed in temporary stalls away from the stallions, alongside the breeders’ pavilion.

Vento is an extremely attractive stallion with classical dressage and jumper breeding. He is very kind, honest, calm, self-assured, willing, forward thinking and bold. Vento is incredibly easy to handle in virtually every situation. Judges and clinicians love his approachable personality and his desire to please and he has confidence in every situation. He has a unique amber eye color and full mane and tail. There is nothing he will not try as he approaches everything with a “can do” attitude. Vento has three beautiful gaits with easy collection. His extended walk, trot and canter are particularly good and show excellent, correct, ground-covering movement. His gaits score very, very well in competition. Vento has superb conformation with plenty of leg bone, as noted in his IALHA stallion inspection. Vento is physically very sound and is currently training Grand Prix Level dressage.

SICAB 2016 Competitions commence on Tuesday with finals on Saturday and Sunday and presentations of horses for sale take place at the end of the day. (It is estimated that roughly 50 percent of international P.R.E. horse sales occur during SICAB and the weeks preceding and following the event.) For attendees not in the market for a horse, there is an abundance of equestrian-related goods and services available for purchase at the 300-plus vendor booths. From exercise walkers, trailers and beautifully appointed coaches to arena footing, saddles, tack, boots, apparel and jewelry, there is something for everyone to take home from SICAB. International visitors especially covet the handmade leather goods for which Spain is famous, and there is plenty of Spanish beer, wine, sherry and traditional food on hand to enhance everyone’s shopping and entertainment experiences. “Visitors from all over the world get a unique opportunity to observe these magnificent animals all together under one roof each year to gain insight into what they should be striving for in breeding, purchasing or training of their own P.R.E.,” says Olympian Rafael Soto, who heads

the riding department at the Royal School in Jerez. “For me, it is a chance to meet with many friends and acquaintances to discuss the tendencies in breeding and in the various disciplines and to see the prospects of up-and-coming horses. SICAB is also very special to me because it is where the idea of forming a Spanish Olympic Dressage Team with Spanish horses started to take shape. When Ignacio Rambla rode Evento in a demonstration Grand Prix test many years ago, the judges realized that the P.R.E. could certainly perform at international and Olympic-level dressage. I was chosen to be part of that first Olympic team in Atlanta in 1996 with a very young Invasor. Ignacio and Evento finished in a very meritorious individual 11th place.” (Soto and Rambla brought home silver medals eight years later from the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens.) “Pura raza, puro corazón” (purebred, pure hear t; a photo caption on a recent ANCCE promotion) succinctly defines the magnificence of P.R.E.s and the passionate admiration of those who celebrate them. A Trainer’s National Show Experience: I love showing in general, and the IAHLA National Show is my favorite for many reasons. I love the collective ring Experience classes in particular. Nationals Most people do not think of a collective ring class in terms that parallel a dressage test. In ring classes, the horses and riders are asked to perform gaits, as described in the rules of the various disciplines, on the command of the judge. They are considered and evaluated, not only against the class specifications, but also against each of the competing horses, the handlers, riders or drivers in each class. Ring classes bring an added component of horse-human interaction while performing in a group at the judge’s direction, which makes them exciting and a bit unpredictable at times. Driving classes are some of my favorites. All these ring classes provide a great opportunity to display a broad spectrum of horsewomanship and horsemanship. The National Show is a collection of the best of the best bringing forward top competitors and horses which have been contending over the show year. Because I love these horses, it is pleasing to me to see them all perform well, even when they are not my own! With five plus decades of competing in my rearview mirror though, I can say that the IALHA National Show is unusually supportive of newcomers. As a breeder and competitor, it is exhilarating to see and compete with others that I have only been able to read about in show results through the year. The National Show also gives the general public a chance to see our horses’ wonderful versatility in the different divisions and witness them up close and personal. I am so excited to have the Nationals in “my backyard” this year! I have not been an exhibitor the past two years, mostly because I have reached the age that I do not feel comfortable hauling horses long distances. This will be an extra special year because, for the first time, I will be showing two horses that I have bred, raised and trained! – Francine Dismukes
