At this time of reflection, we wanted to share insights from the GWI's new research report, “Defining Wellness Policy,” that summarize the crucial ways that wellness has positively changed the world. The explosion of wellness into a multi-trillion-dollar economy has generated an ever-increasing array of criticisms of the “wellness-industrial complex.” Critics complain about wellness businesses preying on consumer fears to make a profit, and they attack celebrity influencers for peddling “snake oil” and false promises without any scientific evidence. In many cases, these criticisms can be well-warranted. But amidst all of the fads and hype around commercialized wellness, we need to remember that the wellness concept and global wellness movement are not rooted in selling things or making money. The core of wellness is a holistic, multidimensional, and proactive approach to health and well-being. Beyond the significant economic activities it has generated, the modern wellness movement has brought a powerful amount of good to the world over the last decade.
Six Ways The Wellness Movement Has Positively Changed The World:
1. Embracing Holistic Health.
The concept of health as holistic dates back thousands of years, but this understanding was largely lost in developed and Westernized societies with the advent of modern, evidence-based medicine. The modern wellness movement has revived and popularized among mainstream consumers an understanding of their health as being holistic, multidimensional, and interconnected. For example, when people are asked why they visit the gym or take exercise classes, they are now just as likely to mention the mental and social benefits as they are exercise.
2. Mainstreaming Traditional Modalities for Prevention and Self-care.
Many of the practices and products that we associate with wellness today - e.g., meditation, yoga, herbal supplements, plant-based medicines, spirituality, looking to nature for healing-date from ancient times. Most were considered fringe or “woo woo” in Westernized societies until they were embraced and mainstreamed by the wellness movement. Even in their countries of origin, many traditional healing practices had fallen out of favor among younger generations, until they were modernized and brought back by the wellness industry (e.g., TCM in China, Ayurveda in India).
The increasing popularity of ancient and traditional wellness practices has greatly expanded our understanding of self-care and strategies to improve health and resilience. It has also forced the scientific and medical communities to take a new look at traditional healing modalities and their scientific efficacy for both prevention and treatment purposes.
3. Increasing Consumer Choice and Business Innovations.
The desire for healthier lifestyles and for alternatives/complements to allopathic care has spurred demand for new wellness services, products, practices, and businesses. The wellness market is driven by personal agency; the desire for choices; experimentation with ancient and new modalities; and a delivery that meets the need for convenience, customization, privacy, and access. This dynamic environment has stimulated countless new business innovations, research, investments, and products/services, mostly to the benefit of consumers. Everyone wants and needs something different when it comes to their personal wellness, and the wellness market provides an everexpanding array of options to meet those needs, as well as the opportunity to scale and expand services and access for different populations.
4. Destigmatizing Mental Health.
Wellness is not only about preventing disease, but also about moving toward a higher state of health and well-being across many dimensions (physical, mental, social, etc.). The mental dimension of wellness, in particular, has received increased attention during the pandemic. Rather than just coping with or stigmatizing mental health conditions, mental wellness helps shift our focus toward a more positive and empowering approach. It highlights the pervasiveness of stress and social isolation, the importance of resilience, the value of finding purpose and meaning, and the need to build social connections. This increased awareness helps to build understanding, compassion, and support toward shared human conditions, no matter what our mental health challenges might be.
5. Moving from “Sick Care” to Prevention
Research has shown that 80-90% of our individual health outcomes are determined by environmental, socioeconomic, and lifestyle factors (also known as the social determinants of health).[1] Healthcare systems have little influence on the social determinants that so heavily influence our health and longevity. Currently, our healthcare systems are primarily “sick care” systems, emphasizing diagnosis and treatment of illness and injuries, while doing a very poor job at prevention. The wellness movement has dramatically raised awareness of the shortcomings of our “sick care” model and the importance of self-care and community care approaches, emphasizing prevention and health-enhancing practices. This shift can potentially help far more people live longer and healthier lives while lessening the costs on our overburdened healthcare systems.
6. Building Pathways for Sustainability and Health Equity.
The modern wellness movement may have started out as a self-centered approach for individuals to pursue healthier and happier lives, but it is steadily evolving from a personal aspiration toward a recognition of our connection to the collective. Increasingly, we are recognizing that our individual health and well-being are inextricably linked to the well-being of other people, our communities, and the planet. We cannot be truly well if we confine our existence to a personal wellness bubble. For example, people are now asking important questions about their neighborhoods and living environments: Is our indoor and outdoor air safe to breathe? Why don't we have good public spaces to socialize or to exercise? A growing segment of consumers is shifting from a “me” to a “we” perspective about wellness: How can people be healthy if they cannot afford healthy foods? Why is there so little green space in poor neighborhoods? Is the person doing my massage or serving my food treated fairly at work? As these perspectives evolve, the wellness movement is bringing sustainability and health equity issues closer to home.

Tips To Rewild And Restore Your Skin In 2023
If you’ve spent years suffering from relentless skin conditions, from acne to eczema, then you need to start the New Year by rewilding!
Your skin holds an ecosystem – just as you would find in a rainforest or an ocean reef. Skin’s natural microbes form a complex ecology in a delicate balance. When you disrupt this natural balance with harmful, chemical-laden skin products, the ecosystem is damaged. Because your skin microbiome is so important in keeping skin healthy, this damage can lead to problematic skin. Fortunately, there are techniques you can use to bring back the microbial balance so that your skin can protect itself naturally. It does mean adapting your lifestyle somewhat, but just a few simple changes can make all the difference to your skin health in 2023.
1. Makeup-free Days
With remote and hybrid working more commonplace, there is a lot more opportunity to avoid wearing make-up on certain days. The less make-up you wear, the less cleansing is needed – which is really good news for your microbiome. Without disruption from make-up and the resulting cleansing, your skin will begin to rewild. Take a couple of days off from make-up and see the results!
2. Don’t Over-cleanse
A common belief is that cleaning ourselves constantly is the most hygienic way to live, and while we’re not saying you need to take a stand against cleaning, it is certainly possible to over-cleanse the skin. Your skin works hard to produce valuable oils – as the
skin has done for 2 million years. By overcleaning with products twice a day, we’re stripping these oils and washing away the protection they provide. Rather splash your face with lukewarm water every morning.
3. Don’t Over-sanitize
The pandemic has resulted in a massive rise of antibacterial agents, and while these do have their place, over-sanitizing in the home can be hugely detrimental to the skin. We’ve all spent the last three years sanitising excessively and have experienced dryness and redness as a result. If you do need to sanitize, consider using eco-conscious options that are better for you and the environment.
4. Avoid Sugar
You probably didn’t want to hear this one, but sugar is detrimental to your health, which includes skin health. Sugar breaks down the collagen and elastin that gives your skin that structure and firmness. So, as a New Year’s resolution, consider cutting down – or cutting out – sugar in your diet.
5. Get Outdoors
We have become far too disconnected from the natural world, despite it being incredibly beneficial for our mental and physical well-being. The natural world is thriving with good microbes that interact with your skin in a healthy way. This is something that simply can’t be replicated by manufactured products. Get out in the wild and rewild your skin while lowering stress levels and improving your mood.
6. Enjoy some Sun

7. Get Active
There’s no way of getting around it – you need to exercise. It’s good for your physical well-being, it’s good for your mental well-being, and it’s good for your skin! Sweating releases those built-up toxins while the increased heart rate increases blood flow throughout your body, resulting in healthier skin.
8. Include Omegas
Omega 3s and Omega 6s – found in fresh fish, eggs, and seeds – are important for fostering good skin health. These quality oils are used by the skin to support barrier function and the microbiome, so if you have low stocks, your skin health is going to suffer.
9. Check your Skincare Products
Finally, look at the ingredients in your current skincare products. Working Out ‘In Your Mind’ Can Actually Make Your Muscles Stronger and Promote Longevity

Have you ever noticed just how often fitness instructors and influencers tout the importance of visualization? Some boutique fitness studios, like Orangetheory, go so far as to plaster their walls with motivational phrases to assist in the visualization process.
While witnessing your potential physical success in your mind’s eye can help enhance focus and encourage confidence, visualization practices have benefits that reach beyond the purely mental.
According to a 2014 study conducted by researchers at the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, mental imagery exercises can actually prevent physical muscle weakness— even without literally moving a muscle. Simply imagining yourself working out could delay muscle atrophy, and make you stronger.
Who knew the power of thought really is so powerful?
How does visualization strengthen the muscles?
The Ohio University researchers tested their mindover-muscles theory by putting study participants in an immobilizing cast around their wrist for four weeks. While one group was told to vividly visualize flexing their arm muscles for 11 minutes five days per week, the other group wasn’t given any type of instruction. Once everyone’s casts were removed, researchers found that those who had flexed with all their mental might ended up being two times stronger than the others.
Though it wasn’t just their muscles that were stronger,
the neuromuscular pathways in their minds were, too—which was proven via magnetic imaging, and likely the cause of the increased physical strength. "What our study suggests is that imagery exercises could be a valuable tool to prevent or slow muscles from becoming weaker when a health problem limits or restricts a person's mobility," study author Brian Clark, a professor of physiology and neuroscience at Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, said in a press release.
Needless to say, these findings are rich in potential for folks undergoing neurorehabilitation (like after a stroke), as well as those who may simply be trying to recover from an injury. For seniors who may not be able to work out as heartily as they used to, actively imagining gym time could keep their muscles stronger.
Is it worth trying?
Some scientists in the field believe that more research is needed to concretely determine the effectiveness of visualization. “Despite a voluminous literature on this subject, there is no definitive understanding of the effects of mental imagery perspectives on muscle strength,” one scholarly article on the subject, which was published in the Journal of Sports Science & Medicine in 2016, reads. “In fact, the literature presents different and sometimes opposing views.”
Nonetheless, physical therapist Sandra Gail Frayna, who is the founder of Hudson Premier Physical Therapy & Sports in New Jersey, and who is well versed in the world of rehabilitation, says that this strategy absolutely does have its benefits.
“Mental imagery exercises are a neurocognitive approach to visualization techniques often used for people looking to relax and get into a better mindspace where they create experiences with sensory information in their minds without having the stimulus upfront,” she explains. Self-talk, setting goals, meditation, and quiet visualization are all examples of this. “Practicing these imagery exercises— which can either be visual, kinesthetic, or auditory— is a healthy coping mechanism.”
And that goes for anyone looking to make the most of a poor situation—not just injured athletes. “Having high stress situations puts one in a tense psychological state, so being immersed in this will activate the motor region of the brain and change performance and even a mental state,” Frayna says. “Focusing on mental images without having that external stimuli can prove to be just as helpful as physical exercises.”
Athletes often use this approach to prep for competitions without overexerting their bodies. Trainers will coach them to call on as many senses as possible—imagining how an exercise looks, feels, maybe even how it sounds—to make this strategy most effective.
So the next time if you find yourself in a position where physical exertion isn’t possible—or in an instance where you simply want to approach your fitness from a more all-encompassing stance— remember that picturing your performance might just be the secret to your success.

Nathalie Delclos, Spa Director for The Ritz Paris Club & Spa, got her start in the spa industry more than a decade ago. Working her way up through the Four Seasons Hotels & Resorts network of spas, Delclos joined the brand in 2008 as a spa sales manager. After four years, she was appointed spa director at the Four Seasons Resort Seychelles. She also served as regional spa director at the Four Seasons’ Hotel Georges V in Paris. In her new role as spa director for the Ritz Paris Club & Spa, Delclos recently oversaw the transition of the brand from the former Chanel Spa to the Ritz Club & Spa and is currently managing the team’s day-to-day operations, guest relations, and treatment innovation. Passionate about wellness, she practices what she preaches, living a holistic and healthy lifestyle including running marathons, cycling, yoga, and more. Here Delclos shares how she keeps wellness front and center.
What does wellness mean to you?
Wellness is a state of contentment. It’s the ability to relax and enjoy life, an overall feeling of healthiness. Wellness also reflects a strong immune system and a regimen of daily practices that include self-care, healthy eating, and exercise. It’s having a strong, capable body that can carry you through your days with ease.
What are your favorite things to do to maintain your personal wellbeing?
I have high-intensity hobbies like running, wakeboarding, and snowboarding during winter season, but I also spend quality time with my friends for a good mindset. Is there a specific fitness activity that you love and why? Running. It is a simple way to detox pressure from the daily operations of life.
What is your favorite healthy food, and do you have a favorite way of preparing it?
I love poke bowls. I prepare my bowl depending on the
season to get the best quality of ingredients, and I always try to buy fresh fruits or vegetables whenever possible.
What is your favorite healthy beverage (alcoholic or non-alcoholic), and insider tips for preparing it?
My favorite beverages, by far, are hot tea and matcha. I opt for a white tea with squeezed lemon, and I always make my matcha with almond milk. What is your greatest wellness achievement?
Finishing a marathon. When I run a marathon, I completely empty my head from any worries, and I feel my most free and strong self.
What person in wellness do you most admire and why?
I admire the explorer Mike Horn for his mental strength and all his accomplishments in his adventures and challenges.
What do you think is the most exciting wellness innovation you have recently discovered?
I’m amazed by the improvements in wellness in the past 15 years. I’ve noticed the rise in retreat centers around the world. To me, that means that people are caring about and investing in wellness. Those establishments are tailored to specific focuses on healing like addiction recovery or prevention.
What is your idea of balanced healthy happiness?
It’s a recharging sleep paired with a healthy diet. But more deeply than that, it’s being surrounded by loving family and friends—and, of course, to enjoy daily life with a routine that I enjoy.
Do you have a secret health or wellness tip you would like to share?
Enjoy life and be grateful to be how you are when you wake up in the morning.
What is your favorite place for a healthy vacation or escape?
Whether it be mountains or beaches, anywhere is best spent with your favorite people.
What is your favorite self-care routine?
Balancing food and exercise.
What is your go-to for de-stressing?
Running or taking a few minutes to close my eyes and meditate to go back to the essentials.
What aspect of your wellbeing do you struggle with the most, or would most like to improve?
Yoga and biking. I need to concentrate more time on these two activities.
How do you celebrate small victories?
I celebrate with the people who help me to achieve these victories, such as going out for a drink.
What brings you joy?
My children, family, and friends, and my work.

Pass the apple back and forth from one hand to the other, crossing the mid-line, so you are stimulating both hemispheres of the brain and interrupting and diffusing the pattern of stress you’re experiencing. 2023 Worldwide Fitness Trends

The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) publication ACSM’s Health & Fitness Journal (HFJ) recently released its highly anticipated Worldwide Survey of Fitness Trends for 2023.
The annual survey was launched in 2006 to explore changes in the fitness industry. It is used by wellness facilities and independent sport and exercise professionals to direct investment and remain on the cutting edge of the market.
The top trend this year is wearable technology. However, the broader story told by the 2023 results, when compared to those of 2020 through 2022, is one of a relatively swift industry-wide reaction to COVID-19, a temporary pandemic status quo, and an eventual return to a more “normal” fitness landscape.
According to the survey’s author, former ACSM president Walter R. Thompson, Ph.D., FACSM, “The results of this year’s survey could very well be titled ‘post-pandemic recovery impacts the fitness industry’ or ‘what happened to online training and home gyms?’”
Here are the top 10 trends:
1. Wearable Technology. Think fitness trackers, smart watches, heart rate monitors, and GPS tracking devices, including tech that can monitor heart rate, calories, sitting time, sleep, and more.
2. Strength Training with Free Weights. This activity incorporates the use of barbells, dumbbells, and/or kettlebells.
3. Body Weight Training. Predictably, techniques that focus on body weight as the primary resistance
are on trend. Body weight training uses minimal equipment and space, making it an inexpensive and functional way to exercise.
4. Fitness Programs for Older Adults. Programming focused on the aging population and its unique needs are growing.
5. Functional Fitness Training. Training to improve balance, coordination, functional strength, and endurance is being utilized to improve daily living.
6. Outdoor Activities. Pursuits like group walks, bicycle rides, or organized hiking led by health and fitness professionals are on the rise. Activities can be short events, day-long events, or planned multiday excursions.
7. High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT). These exercise programs typically involve repeated bouts of high-intensity exercise combined with periods of rest.
8. Exercise for Weight Loss. This trend incorporates weight-loss programs like dieting and cooking classes with an exercise routine.
9. Employing Certified Fitness Professionals. Hiring certified health and fitness professionals who have completed educational programs and fully accredited health/fitness certifications is also trending.
10. Personal Training. Personal training includes goal setting, fitness assessment, and exercise programming with a trainer in one-on-one settings.
In 2020, Online Training came in at No. 26. In 2021, it was the No. 1 trend. In 2022, it dropped to No. 9, and in the 2023 results, it fell to No. 21.
Fitness facilities seem to have gone back to basics in the wake of the pandemic: Strength training with free weights was No. 2, Body weight training took the No. 3 spot, and core training and circuit training ranked Nos. 11 and 12, respectively.
Other trends have remained relatively stable, regardless of the changes brought by COVID-19: High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), for example, was the No. 1 trend in both 2014 and 2018, and it took the No. 7 slot in 2022 and 2023.
The 2023 survey comprised 42 possible trends and polled 125,940 people, including 30,000 ACSM certified professionals, receiving responses from across the globe—from Australia to Malawi and Sri Lanka to Sweden.
Personal trainers and medical professionals, including M.D.s and physical therapists, made up the largest percentages of respondents. Fifty-five percent had more than 10 years of industry experience, and 29 percent had more than 20. Fifty-eight percent of respondents were female, and 41 percent were male, and those surveyed represented a wide range of ages.
Trends differed slightly by region. Australia ranked fitness programs for older adults at No. 1. In Brazil, it was personal training. Europe, as a whole, placed body weight training in the top slot. Mexico favored exercise and weight-loss programs. Portuguese respondents were most interested in licensure for fitness professionals. In Spain, the No. 1 trend was functional fitness training. And the U.S. reflected the overall global trend, placing wearable technology at No. 1.

Travel has begun to return to pre-pandemic levels, with airports seeing a surge in traffic and hotels across the country staying fully booked. The hospitality industry faced a massive shift when the pandemic hit, bringing forth new methods and motivators once travel returned. Consumers are more excited than ever to travel now, but are becoming more intentional with where and how they spend their time, and the industry is moving to accommodate and reflect that shift.
The focus has shifted to showcasing unique features of properties and destinations to make people want to travel again. Both business and leisure travel have been increasing, and so have the number of people traveling as a family and with their pets. Hotel design is based on what travelers are looking for, and below are five new design trends we'll be seeing as we move into 2023.
1. Technology will Remain A Top Priority
Much of our everyday life is reliant on technology, and that only increased once the pandemic began. We quickly had to transition and adjust to video calling loved ones, Zoom meetings, virtual conferences, and remote work. While many people have returned to office life in some aspects, remote work life has proven to be here to stay at least for the time being, and hotel & spa design needs to take notice to adjust to remote workers traveling and their needs.
As business travel is picking up, many people are now taking part in bleisure travel and extending their work trips for personal fun. With this change, properties must have technology top of mind when making design decisions for the upcoming year. Many are now working from their hotel rooms while they're traveling. Making the guest rooms and common spaces conducive to work, such as having a semi-private area or adding more outlets and tables to the lobby, will be beneficial so that people can get work done while still engaging in the energy of a property.
Aside from using technology for work, people have become accustomed to the efficiency it provides. The driving force of design should always be considering how we can engage client and make processes easier for them. For example, check into the hotel and spa via their smartphone. Or, incorporate technology that connects their phone to the in-room speakers to play their choice of music, adjust the thermostat, or dim the lights.
Design can also influence a hotel's digital presence. Adding a mural or striking decor encourages photography and social sharing, which can engage additional followers and drive digital traffic. Consider also adding a QR code next to any unique murals or decor can add another element for clients to engage with the artwork and further integrate technology into your design.
2. An Increased Focus on Making Loved Ones Comfortable
Family travel is on the rise, and after a spike in adoptions during the pandemic, that often includes their pets. Approximately 78% of pet owners acquired their pets during the pandemic, and 66% of pet owners have spent more money on their pets recently to help them adjust to being alone more often, as they are out of the house more than before.
Properties will be looking to become more petfriendly, by adding amenities such as dog runs, dog walking services and special treats for pets, while still being clean. These pet friendly design elements can help attract a wider audience of travelers and encourage them to stay longer as well, given they can bring their loved ones along on the trip. Locations might begin to incorporate pet friendly design.
Families who are traveling with their children will be looking for activities they can all do together, including the Spa. Additionally, hotels and Spas can hold more family-friendly events, or provide a more educational experience and teach kids about the history of the location they're visiting.
3. The Great Outdoors will Stay Great
Properties will be utilizing and expanding their outdoor space more and more. Getting outside was a large part of how people stayed safe and entertained throughout the pandemic, and its popularity has remained steady. It's still an important part of hotel and spa design because it gives guests the option to distance themselves from others if they would like to.
Hotels and Sps are capitalizing on their outdoor space by expanding existing areas and providing guests with outdoor experiences they can enjoy onsite. This could include outdoor dining, outdoor gym options or larger balconies that encourage guests to utilize the space more often.
Additionally, as we look toward future builds, many developers are seeking destinations with an outdoor appeal – a national park, mountain range or body of water – tailoring their design around the natural environment. This approach is geared to meet the needs and desires of today's travelers, who have embraced the outdoors during the pandemic and want to continue doing so in their future travels.
4. Local Connections Matter More Than Ever Before
Its anticipated that hotels and spas will offer more unique experiences for clients to partake in, focused on hyperlocal design. Properties are drawing inspiration from their communities, incorporating those features into the guest rooms and common spaces to enhance the client experience.

To add to this, properties can incorporate more of the local community by furnishing and decorating the hotel using local artists' work. Working with local artists will help further integrate your property with the community and boost the local economy, along with giving guests the chance to experience yet another taste of the area they are staying within.
5. Taking Sustainability One Step Further
Hoteliers have long desired to place sustainability and environmentalism at the forefront, and thoughtful design can help reduce a property's carbon footprint. For example, hotels may be using bulk amenities in bathrooms to cut down on waste, adding recycling canisters in guest rooms, and partnering with local businesses to shorten the supply chain.
As a example, The Lodge at Gulf State Park, located on the Alabama Gulf Coast, recently designed a poolside bar with sustainability in mind. The design team ensured the lighting specifications and illumination levels don't disrupt local wildlife and sourced materials that are native to the area. In doing so, the team ensured to elevate the property's design, while still keeping the local area and sustainability efforts top of mind.
Traditionally, design for a new hotel and spa begins two years before opening, meaning many newer properties were designed pre-pandemic and do not reflect the shift in design that it caused. With a heightened focus on technology, comfort for the whole family, connection to the outdoors and the local community, and an emphasis on sustainability, we are poised to create innovative new properties and experiences guests will love for years to come.
While these are exciting new changes and developments in the industry as we step away from prototypical properties, but the goal of the trends we will be seeing in 2023 is to create more engaged clients and elevate their experience. If we're able to create a connection with them and provide outstanding service, recommendations, and spa innovation, they will want to return to create more memories with us.

Whether caused by the digital revolution, the pandemic or the dawn of a new decade, more spa-goers than ever are asking for uniquely tailored spa experiences, from personalized treatments to fully customized spa packages. Pulse spoke to spa leaders to find out what is driving the trend and how your spa can take advantage of the opportunities afforded by customization and personalization.
Crazy for Customization
Peoples haved changed the way that they world view themselves, their health and their lifestyles. Ask any spa director about market demand right now and you'll hear the same thing: people are crazy for spa. In fact, many spas currently report that the only thing keeping them from smashing any and all revenue records is the industry's profound staffing shortage. A greater appreciation for a customized approach to wellness is at the heart of this renewed interest in living healthier, longer lives; that is, spa-goers are coming to spas not just seeking spa experiences, but customized, bespoke spa experiences. In a study of consumer attitudes towards wellness released earlier this year, McKinsey & Company found that “a substantial majority of consumers around the world say they prioritize personalization now more than they did two or three years ago.” In the U.S., more than 88 percent of consumers value personalization more than before; McKinsey & Company also report that customers in Brazil and China are particularly willing to trade privacy for greater personalization.
It's hard not to see consumers' growing valuation of custom experiences as connected to the wearable technology boom. In a world where everyone has a Fitbit or Apple Watch that constantly tracks their personal health in order to make personalized recommendations, why wouldn't consumers expect wellness experiences to also be tailored to them?
It's not that simple, however. Laura Martinez, director of spa at the Four Seasons at the Surf Club, views a proclivity for custom spa experiences as a reaction against technology. “We're so connected and virtual in so many ways,” says Martinez, “but at the end of the day, people still need that physical connection.” Viewed this way, the increasingly digital world in which we live is precisely why consumers are craving physical treatments now more than ever. Todd Shaw, Chief Experience Officer of Fountain Life-an integrated platform for healthcare and wellness-sees these increases as the product of existing organic trends within the industry. “I think we're all just sick and tired of being sick and tired,” Shaw says. “My parents' generation is trying to stay as healthy as long as they can, my generation is trying to be healthier, and the younger generation is making even healthier decisions. It's this movement that's happening organically.” Part of that, adds Shaw, is the realization of how much harm has been done by choices we now know to be deleterious to one's health, such as smoking, alcohol or added sugar: the knowledge of our past sins inspires us to be better in the future.
Diverse Approaches, One Goal
Virtually all spas are now trying to offer more customized, personalized, or bespoke spa experiences with the same goal in mind: a transformative experience. In the past, hotel spas, in particular, often resisted offering customized
services out of a desire to present clients with a standardized high-quality experience that they could rely on from location to location. Many years ago, says Cecilia Hercik, director of spa and wellness at Sea Island Resort, “We were so focused on consistency and protocols that we did not allow our providers to use their whole toolbox. Now, I think many we have realized that service providers can create very unique, personalized services.”
The picture is different now at Sea Island, which recently launched a variety of self-guided journeys that allow spa-goers to chart their own path through the spa's facilities. Sea Island's four self-guided journeys are designed to draw attention to the spa's communal facilities-including a cascading waterfall pool, an aromatherapy area, and a sound therapy area-some of which may be confusing for customers to find or use without specific direction. Each guest receives a laminated waterproof “menu” that they can carry around which outlines the self-guided journey for them. Through this clever use of spa facilities, Sea Island Resort was able to add an experience that feels tailored to each customer without having to invest significant capital or manpower in its implementation.
Martinez at the Four Seasons at the Surf Club creates custom experiences during the treatment itself through engaged conversations throughout the customer journey. “At the end of the day, it's really about listening to our guests' needs and being interested,” Martinez says. The spa uses every touch points - the initial booking call, the in-person check-in, the conversation with the therapist before the service begins to ask smart questions and listen closely to the answers.
Another popular approach to offer customized spa experiences and tailored treatments combinations is to charge by time, not by service: this is how Tereza Zanchi - a spa with 10 locations in Brazil, provides customized treatment packages. A client can book either a 30-, 45-, 60-, 90- or 120-minute session and combine services a la carte. “A customer could do thirty minutes of shiatsu plus thirty minutes of reflexology, for example,” says Co-Founder Katja Guimaraes. “Charging for the time makes it easy to operate. For a small difference in price, the confusion of charging by the service, isn't worth it.”
Building a Business Case
The business benefits of offering customized services are, for the most part, self-evident. Customized experiences lead to happier spa-goers who are more likely to return to the spa. At the same time, the higher price point attached to more customized and personalized experiences also means greater revenues and bigger profit margins. However, there are benefits that are less intuitive. For example, Hercik notes that customized treatments don't only lead to happier clients: they lead to happier staff, too. Allowing therapists to use their full range of skills to customize services reignites their passion. “The excitement you see on the therapists - they went to school with that inspiration? They had a gift and a passion. Sometimes we clip their wings a little bit too much.”
On the other hand, there are challenges to offering customized services. Staffing is a major obstacle. In order to coordinate customized packages that bridge fitness, massage, aesthetics and more, “you
need a qualified individual that understands different areas of the spa,” says Hercik. While that person can be the spa director or spa manager, taking the lead on customizing treatments can be too timeconsuming to be practical. Timing can also be a sticking point, according to Martinez. “Looking at the provider's perspective, timing is hard,” she says. “How much time do they need to listen to the guest? Some guests open up really quickly. Others, not so much.” Training staff on human psychology and how to ask effective questions can help overcome the timing challenge, but costs both time and money on the front end. Behind the scenes, managing back bar inventory is also made more difficult by customized treatments: it's harder to anticipate product use when offering custom treatments.
Todd Shaw speaks to ways that customization adds to the burden of responsibility, too. This is especially true for Fountain Life, which works with a client on a total healthcare evaluation that includes traditional medicine as well as spa, wellness and fitness. “Right now, a doctor can feel comfortable because they're playing within the standards that have been approved,” says Shaw. At FountainLife, which uses advanced diagnostics in order to proactively measure and improve health, they don't have the luxury of convention, and this adds to their responsibility. While the stakes at a spa might be different. When we create a customized massage or facial, I send it to my therapist and I say, 'No protocols, use your whole toolbox and do whatever is necessary, this allows your spa to offer a customized experience at very little additional cost by eliminating the need to spend time guiding a client to book the correct service at the time of reservation. Hercik adds, “I think sometimes we overthink it by trying to find too many wellness counselors when the practitioner can do all that for you.” Echoing Hercik's advice, Martinez adds that you could also start even smaller by offering an exclusive customized experience to only your spa's most frequent customers.
Getting Started
None of those challenges are insurmountable, though; says Martinez, “At the end of the day, all of this is worth it when you see the guest blown away by their experience.” If your spa wants to implement new ways to customize treatments, there are small but smart ways to start doing so.
One way is to offer a single custom treatment that is sold only in one time length. Allow your therapist to use any methodologies and products that they feel will benefit the client's needs.
If you're hesitant to begin offering fully customized services, you can still make the spa experience more unique by personalizing your services; while the methodologies might be standardized, smaller aspects-like aromatherapy oils, beverage choice, etc. can be altered to suit a client's specific preferences. It's especially impressive if your spa remembers these preferences, says Shaw, by actually attaching them to a client's profile in your spa booking software. The idea of personalization doesn't have to be crazy. Just show people that you care about the details. In providing a customized experience, therapists have to feel comfortable and confident in stepping away from standardized protocols; in doing this, they take even more of the spa-goer's happiness into their own hands.

This resort spanning 7,000 acres on the Dominican Republic’s south-eastern coast has revealed plans for its cutting-edge new Spa & Wellness Centre opening in spring 2023. To help encourage close consumer and brand relationships, several beauty companies have invested in pop-up experiences for their loyal customers. From Gisou's golden-themed temporary shop to Amorepacific's K-pop immersive experience, here are the latest retail installations popping up around town.
Lush: Featuring mood-based galleries, massage opportunities, and poetry, Lush showcased an immersive wellness space in London's Westfield White City. The London Lush Lounge held a similar message to the brand's Sleepy Space in Brooklyn, where shoppers could go to escape the chaos of the holiday rush. Lush offered several elements for consumers to immerse themselves in, starting with The Bathe Booth, which allowed attendees to watch products come to life, fizz in water, and create art in bathtubs. In collaboration with The Poetry Pharmacy, Lush offered the poetry lottery, a service that connected visitors with uplifting poems based on cards they chose that aligned with their mood.
To champion the idea that self-care does not have to look perfect or glamorous, the Lush Lounge hosted a gallery that presented images of honest, unedited self-care moments as a source of inspiration. Preparing guests for reentry into the chaos of holiday shopping, refresh stations were at hand, stocked with Lush body sprays, hand creams, and toners. At the end of the experience, a gift-wrapping service was offered where customers had an opportunity to color their wrapping paper, which further enhanced the personal feel of the gift.

The immersive experience also included a photo booth to help create memorable social media sharing experiences and offered 20% off the standard retail price as well as free goody bags for all.

The space featured neutral colored shelves and stands that matched the brand's sleek and minimal aesthetic. Stone-like walls and checkout areas were complemented by large posters that featured campaign imagery of the founder, offering consumers a deeper connection with her brand.
Gisou: The brand celebrated the festive season through a pop-up attraction in London's Piccadilly Circus. Visitors were greeted by warm-toned welcoming lights that lit up the temporary shop's exterior, which was shaped into a classic Gisou fragrance bottle. Gisou's range of products, including limited-edition offerings such as Christmas sweaters and the first-ever Gisou Advent Calendar, were readily available throughout the shop where almost everything was a gleaming metallic gold. The space stayed true to Gisou's love for honeybees, with nods to the creatures such as floral decoration and honeypot-shaped candles. As a small thank you from the brand, visitors could also have their purchases wrapped free of charge at the checkout. "It was very special having our Gisou community come celebrate our official pop-up opening in the heart of London. We had an amazing time, but that was just the beginning," commented Negin Mirsalehi, founder of Gisou.
Beekman 1802 : Dubbed the Beekman 1802 Kindness Shop, the body care brand hosted its first holiday pop-up shop with a livestreaming twist. Located at the studio of livestream commerce platform Live Rocket, the initiative was livestreamed on the Beekman 1802's website and Facebook. Paying homage to the brands best-selling Goat Milk Soap, customers were welcomed by a large goat mascot as they entered through doors decorated with cartoon goat stickers. The pop-up shop was heavily decorated in sunshine yellow, with products wrapped in bright tissue paper and yellow bows. Bright neon lights lit up the space, and LED baby goats adorned the walls. The livestream event included deals and holiday gift offerings such as blankets and on-brand mugs and was powered by Firework, a video commerce platform. Eight New York-area VIP customers were invited to see the recording of the livestream and interact with co-founders and event hosts Josh Kilmer-Purcell and Brent Ridge. Beekman 1802 stated that livestream sales equate to 39% of their yearly intake, which means the pop-up shop aligned perfectly with its successful retailing methods.
Dior: Located in Harrods, The Fabulous World of Dior featured a window installation designed by Italian artist Pietro Ruffo that guided shoppers through 44 festive windows decorating Brompton Road. The window displays featured gingerbread scenery and outfits designed by Maria Grazia Chiuri, alongside drawings of iconic Dior dresses designed by Ruffo and reinterpreted using cutlery. A highlighted window included a white marble fireplace with gifts tucked inside against glitter-gold illustrations.Two pop-ups celebrating Christian Dior's love for Christmas were also inside the store. A space that paid homage to the La Collection Privée Christian Dior fragrance range was decorated in deep navy and crisp gold presents and illustrations. The history of Dior was also presented through its signature fragrance compositions, including Gris Dior, Oud Ispahan, and Bois d'Argent.
Amorepacific : In collaboration with Shopify, Amorepacific hosted a K-pop-themed retail innovation in Soho, New York. To get a glimpse of the space, avid fans queued in lines wrapped around the block during the entire opening. Customers were welcomed
Pleasing: Harry Styles' gender-neutral brand has opened its doors in pop-up form for the second time in London, alongside spaces in New York and LA. The temporary shops offered the brand's entire collection, including merchandise, nail polish, skincare, and cosmetics, as well as exclusive apparel products for Styles' devout fans. The locations were decorated festively, featuring vibrant colors and frosting-inspired elements with green and purple wallpaper and imitation fireplaces that created a nostalgic, cozy atmosphere.
Chanel: Less of a shopping experience, yet still a beauty-based pop-up, Chanel opened an immersive exhibition in Paris to celebrate its fragrances. Named Le Grand Numéro Chanel, the pop-up is located at the Grand Palais Éphémère and was described as a “festive and olfactory whirlwind.” Attendees are able to learn about the heritage and origin of the company's scents through a sensory journey that combines technology and fragrance and showcases the inspiration behind the brand's scents. The brand described the experience as “marvelous magic tricks, unexpected discoveries, and highly-anticipated encounters.” The exhibition environment is luxurious, featuring vintage products and elements such as a corded telephone in an alcove with “I love Coco” hand-written on the walls. The exhibition comes after a year of development in partnership with Thomas du Pré de Saint Maur, Head of Global Creative Resources at Chanel.

The area of gut health, the gut microbiome and microbiota have received a lot of attention and talk in recent years, with research uncovering the influence of gut health on so many other areas of health, including skin health, mental health, chronic disease risk, immunity and even weight management.
In this article, we want to unpack the science behind gut health and provide you with practical recommendations and tips to implement into your lifestyle on a daily basis to improve the health of your digestive system and microbiome.
The digestive system runs all the way from your mouth and oral cavity down to your intestines and colon, so gut health, therefore, refers to the health of the entire gastrointestinal tract or GIT, including the oesophagus, the stomach, the small and large intestines.
The gut microbiota refers to the rainforest of microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites that inhabit the gastrointestinal tract. These can have several beneficial or harmful effects. The bacteria that live in our gut have a major influence on all areas of health, including our skin!
Many people are confused as to what optimal gut health looks like, and that is because gut health is so complex and intricate, it can be difficult to define or accurately measure. Gut health consists of how well you are digesting and breaking down food, how effectively your body is absorbing nutrients, the health of the microbiota, specifically the diversity and abundance thereof, immune system function as well as digestive comfort.
A good indication that your gut health is functioning well is the occurrence of daily, well-formed bowel movements and the absence of frequent symptoms such as excessive gas and bloating, abdominal pain and cramps, constipation, reflux, gastritis and diarrhoea.
Poor gut health or digestive disorders may be due to a number of different factors including; genetics, whether we were birthed naturally or by cesarean, whether or not we were breastfed and for how long, stress and anxiety, dietary choices, geographical locations, physical damage to the gut, oral health, lifestyle factors and side effects of medication use.
Poor gut health can also show up in areas of the body and symptoms that are not directly connected to the gastrointestinal tract, such as: inflammatory conditions such as arthritis, poor blood sugar balance, skin conditions such as eczema, rashes, acne and breakouts, autoimmune conditions, frequent infections and illness, mood disorders such as anxiety and depression, as well as unexplained weight gain or loss.
Many of the symptoms and conditions above can be linked to either inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract or dysbiosis of the gut microbiota. Dysbiosis refers to the state when there is an imbalance between the amount of beneficial and harmful bacteria in our gastrointestinal tracts. A healthy microbiota is characterised by diversity, variety and abundance in other words loads of different strains of beneficial bacteria. What many people are unaware of is that the food we eat has a direct impact on the diversity and abundance of our gut microbiome.
Dietary and lifestyle factors that can contribute to inflammation of the gut and or dysbiosis include:

Gastrointestinal disorders and imbalances within the balance of the gut microbiome appear to play a key role in the development of many inflammatory disorders of the skin. These common skin disorders include acne, psoriasis, eczema and rosacea. It is important to remember that there are many factors that contribute to the development of these conditions; the skin-gut axis may potentially be one of these.
Interesting studies suggest a possible relationship between rosacea and Helicobacter pylori, which is a disease-causing bacteria found in the stomach and small intestine, whereby prevalence of H. Pylori is higher in individuals with rosacea than controls and that eradicating this type of bacteria can lead to improved skin outcomes. With regards to eczema, some studies suggest that a lack of microbiome diversity during the early stages of life can impact the optimal maturation and functioning of the immune system, and potentially lead to chronic inflammation. The gut microbiome can also play a key role in the development and progression of acne, again by allowing for the growth of disease-causing bacteria and chronic inflammation.

When Spa Director Benjamin Donat began preparing for reopening at Fairmont Hotel and Resorts in Austin in 2021 after spa facilities were closed for more than 18 months, he was doing so in a whole new world. His most immediate challenge was finding staff after only two of the spa’s 25 employees returned to work. “Compensation was one of the reasons why,” he says now.
Finding new people in a time of tremendous wage pressure is no easy task. When your compensation structure is not aligned with the market, that task becomes exponentially harder. Donat called on his peers at other spas in the Austin area for insight into just how much pay levels had changed. “We conducted a wage analysis to see where we were lacking and what other spas were paying,” he says.
After reviewing that pay data, Donat raised the employee service hour fee by 30 percent to bring it to the competitive standard. The spa also raised commissions for all providers and staff and made sure contractors would not lose out on any earnings if they signed on as employees. The spa raised prices for its services in order to offset the resulting costs from these higher pay levels.
However, recognizing that he could only increase employee pay so much, Donat made adjustments to help increase employees’ earning potential.
The most significant change was to reduce service time from 60 minutes to 50 minutes. This extra 10 minutes allows employees to fit in one extra service if they choose. “That raises their hourly wage even more,” he says. Donat also introduced some new perks, including free parking and lunch, for employees.
As a result of these changes, the spa is forecast to increase revenue this year compared to 2019, its last full year of operation, while also increasing staff retention significantly. However, Donat recognizes that the talent market is still in flux so he will revisit this new compensation structure every six months tomake sure it remains aligned with the market.
Clear the Path
When it comes to changing pay, it is important to have a clear idea of why you are doing so and what you need and want to achieve. When Jim Root, former general manager of Sedona, Arizonabased Mii Amo Spa, was revamping employee compensation, he had three goals in mind. The first was to ensure that its employees earned a living wage (not a simple goal in an expensive resort town) that reflects the value of their time and experience. The second was to tie service cost to the guest to pay for the employee. “There’s no way not to link cost per minute and compensation per minute,” he says.
The third goal was to attract more talent. In Root’s case, competition for talent was not always coming from other resort properties but from the lure of less demanding career options. “People don’t want to work like they did in the past,” says Root. “They want something else.” Quite simply, he had to find a way to make people want to stay in the industry and come work for him.
Before tackling compensation, Root considered how management could support employees. For example, massage therapists need to maximize the use of their time and, by extension, their pay. “We have to respect
their time,” he says. Except for required training and other administrative tasks, “the time between appointments is not compensated so it is management’s responsibility to minimize that time.”
Root is also committed to sharing both positive and negative guest feedback and addressing problems and complaints proactively. “When something goes wrong, we conduct a source/cause analysis to identify where the problem started,” says Root. “This is not a punitive process; it is about accountability.”
With this support in place, his next challenge was to develop a compensation system to meet those goals. The spa assigns each provider to one of three service tiers, each with different levels of base compensation. Root says that providers are slotted into a tier based on their level of experience and other factors. Providers have an opportunity to move to a higher tier during performance reviews based on their skills, performance, guest comments and requests and other factors. Providers may also receive a 20 percent gratuity that is automatically added to the customer’s bill. However, the customer has the option to increase, reduce or eliminate the gratuity entirely.
Support staff pay also changed. Hourly employees who provide support services receive base pay plus a portion of a bonus pool funded by a five percent service charge to the customer. “That pool is distributed based on acknowledged contributions to guest service,” says Root. These payouts can add up to $5 per hour depending on the level of business that day.
Provide The Tools for Success
Changing pay is not the end of this process. Employees need to be able to achieve the goals assigned to them so they can earn their living. When Johanna Lastennet, director of Spa Ovarium in Montreal, began paying commissions to receptionists for retail sales, most of those employees had no experience in sales.
To ease the transition, she developed training to increase receptionists’ product knowledge and to help them get comfortable with the sales process. “Treatments and products take time to explain,” she says. The training emphasizes that making these sales is an opportunity to reassure and take care of the client.
Lastennet also considers pay to be just one part of improving the entire working experience for employees. “Everything is connected,” she says. “You can’t stop at salary.” For example, the spa introduced a more consistent and predictable scheduling process to help employees better manage their work/life balance. She also changed the spa’s opening hours to avoid early morning starts, which is particularly important to employees during a Montreal winter.
At the same time, Spa Ovarium increased base salaries for both therapists and receptionists, while also rethinking its menu of services and its pricing. To attract and retain staff, Lastennet began awarding $1,000 retention bonuses and began offering bonuses for referring new employees to the spa. Existing staff also plays an important part in welcoming new employees by having new employees shadow a staff member on their first day. Lastennet considers this an important way to get the entire staff involved in everyone’s success.
Above all, Lastennet urges spa professionals to observe the Golden Rule, treat people as you want to the treated. From her perspective, the spa would have faced high turnover no matter how much they paid their staff if employees’ day-to-day experience had not improved. “You can’t make up for poor working conditions,” she says.
Compensation Dos and Don’ts
Keeping pay levels tied to the market can be the difference between a thriving business and a struggling one. Here are some ways to make sure you are keeping compensation on an even keel.
DO: Look at pay levels and incentive opportunities on a regular basis. How frequently will depend on the amount of turnover you are experiencing, the amount of available talent in the local market to fill specific roles and how difficult it is to hire new people.
DO: Look for compensation insight and data wherever you can find it. For example, Donat of Fairmont Hotel and Resorts asked spa directors throughout the Austin area to gather compensation information with the promise to share the complete data set when it was completed. “We may be competitors but we can learn from each other.”
DO: Think through in advance what, if anything, you are willing to do if people start quitting, such as making counter offers or offering retention bonuses or other incentives. The key is to be intentional using well thought out guidelines of what you can do from a compensation perspective and why.
DO: Understand strong communication is crucial when changing pay programs. Employees need to know how they can maximize their pay. And if you can’t easily explain an incentive program, it may be too complicated or confusing to work effectively.
DO: Recognize training is essential. If you implement a pay program that ties a portion of pay to product sales or other goals that require specific skills and knowledge, make sure those employees have access to any training or mentoring necessary to be successful in that part of the job.
DON’T: Forget that retaining and motivating employees is not all about pay. A supportive work environment, attractive benefits and flexible work schedules can do a great deal to retain talent, even if they get a better dollar offer elsewhere.
DON’T: Underestimate the role of managers in keeping employees. People don’t leave just because of pay but because they feel that they are not appreciated.
DON’T: Expect pay to remain a secret. Thanks to the wealth of salary information online through web sites and social media, not to mention old-fashioned gossip, it is safer to assume that people have a good idea of how much their peers are making.
DO: Be willing to adjust if a pay programs is not working as well as expected. “I am on the floor every day because I don’t make decisions without seeing what employees do and experience,” says Lastennet. “Without that, employees don’t trust what you are trying to do.”

According to the 2022 ISPA U.S. Spa Industry Study, spa revenues have reverted to pre-pandemic records. And while there has been an increase in spa employees since the previous study, employers are still struggling to attract, recruit, and retain them.
Now that more people are realizing the importance of self-care, there is a higher demand for health and wellness services at hotels and resorts but not enough employees to fully accommodate guests.
The increase in people switching careers and working independently have forced companies to raise the bar when attracting spa employees, especially when considering inflation and cost of living in certain areas.
As an employer, you may be wondering - how exactly can you recruit and retain the right spa employees during this candidate-driven market? Simply put, your company must be open to changing and adapting to the market to reap the rewards.
Recruiting Spa Staff
When recruiting spa staff members, your priority is to create a streamlined and timely hiring process. Many staff-level job seekers don't want to risk waiting for a certain opportunity if it means another week or month of getting unpaid (or underpaid); this can be a substantial loss for those living paycheck to paycheck. If another spa with similar wages and perks comes to them with an offer first, why wouldn't they seize the opportunity?
If your company has a low application submission rate, it may be a sign to refine the hiring process. Are the qualifications and responsibilities listed in the job description too demanding? Is the application too tedious? How personalized are the outreach emails and phone calls? How long do candidates have to wait until your organization follows up about their application or interview? To avoid losing out on potential staff members, you must create a positive candidate experience during the hiring process, from start to finish.
When determining benefits, staff-level employees are likely to focus on the short-term over the longterm when evaluating an opportunity. Research how competitors in your area are attracting spa staff and see if your organization can go above and beyond their offerings.
And if your organization is facing hiring budget constraints, your team should strive to maintain a positive brand. Recent studies report that a majority of Millennials and Gen Z professionals are willing to take a pay cut to work for environmentally and socially responsible companies.
Recruiting Spa Executives
Though spa executives also want the hiring process to move in a timely fashion, they are looking at their career from a larger standpoint. Based on my experience speaking with hospitality executives for nearly 20 years, they have the financial stability to be flexible regarding the length of the hiring process compared to staff-level candidates. When executive candidates receive one offer but suspect they may
be getting another, they are willing to wait it out for the sake of figuring out which path is best for their career. They may even negotiate their start date to be able to take a vacation beforehand or decide to give their former employer longer than two weeks' notice before their official resignation.
Think of the long-term benefits you can offer these seasoned professionals. Executives understand that compensation will come based on their performance, but they ultimately want to join organizations that will continue to challenge them and recognize their hard work. How is the corporate culture? What is the company going to do to support their career growth? And a newer incentive to consider nowadays - is there an option to work remotely full-time or part of the time? Because work-life balance has increased in value, executives are using hybrid and fully remote work as a bargaining chip during the negotiation process.

Health is Wealth: Retaining Your Spa Employees
Once you've hired your employees, the next hurdle is making sure you are doing everything in your power to keep them happy and motivated to stay at your organization long-term.

Your spa is meant to promote health and wellness, but how often is this practiced within your own department?
From a business standpoint, you cannot operate your spa properly if your employees are burnt out. As customers continue to see the value in prioritizing their well-being, your organization should work hard at fostering a healthy and positive work environment for its workers. Consider how much time you put into ensuring your customers come back to use your services. Now, how can you do the same for your employees?
If your team is experiencing high turnover, place yourself in their shoes and take the time to truly understand their needs and motives. Unsure on what
your workers want? Ask them directly. Do they want better compensation? Are they feeling overworked? Do they need more training? Do they want more recognition for their work?
Maintaining consistent communication with your spa team members is crucial. It can be surprising how much useful insight you can get from your team on how to elevate the employee and guest experience. Taking the time to listen - and I mean really listen - to your employees is a simple, yet effective way to make them feel supported and appreciated. As long as you follow through, that is. Any employer can advertise how much they care about their employees, but your workers won't believe it until they see it. Do your best to implement changes within your department based on their feedback. Actions speak louder than words.
Final Thoughts
From my experience, spas are often perceived as a different entity when conversing with hospitality clients. Employers rave about their hotel rooms, food and beverage outlets, and award-winning golf courses, but I rarely hear about their spas. In this candidate-driven market, employers need to shift their perspective and treat their spas with the same attention as they would their other divisions if they want positive results.
While the industry is bouncing back it doesn't mean that everything will (and should) go back to the way things were. The reality is that the "new normal" is here to stay. Employees will continue to put their health and wellness at the forefront when considering future opportunities, so it's in the employer's best interest to keep that in mind when improving their recruitment and retention strategies.
Hiring and retaining the right spa employees is a delicate process that will take time, effort, and an open mind. If you really want to make a difference and improve the way your spa operates, the people who are best for the job will want an employer who genuinely cares about them and fairly compensates them for their work.
All of these changes won't happen overnight, of course. But as long as your company is keeping the needs of your spa employees top of mind, you are one step closer to running an award winning spa

The wellness economy represents 5.1% of total global GDP and at $1.2 trillion the US nearly doubles the size of the second-largest national wellness market, according to new research released this month.
Those headline figures were highlighted in a new report by The Global Wellness Institute (GWI), who joined forces with the Global Wellness Summit (GWS) for the inaugural broadcast of the Global Wellness News live from Times Square in New York City.
The report, titled The Global Wellness Economy: Country Rankings, is the first research to measure the wellness economies of 150 nations, and follows the non-profit’s most recent valuation of the $4.4 trillion wellness economy.
The report set out to establish which nations are growing, which are shrinking, how national wellness markets differ and why.
Among the top 20 wellness markets, the United States ($1.2 trillion) and China ($683 billion) unsurprisingly tower over their nearest nations, given their huge populations – 329.5 million and 1.4 billion respectively.
At $1.2 trillion, the US nearly doubles the size of the second-largest market and accounts for 28% of the entire global wellness market, while the top ten markets represent 71% of the world total.
However, the report found that Switzerland ($4,372 per capita) and Iceland ($3,728) punch far above their weight, with individual consumers investing the most in their wellness. In third, the US spends $3,685 per capita on wellness each year.

Wellness Tourism
The report also shone a spotlight on the vital role wellness plays for tourism-dependent nations, noting that Aruba featured in 10th for nations where consumers spend the most on wellness per capita.
“It may seem surprising to see Aruba rank in the top 10 as it’s not as wealthy as the other ranked countries. This is the tourism effect, where high-spending inbound wellness tourists represent a disproportionate part of the wellness market,” the report’s authors wrote.
In ranking countries by the size of their wellness economy with the size of their total GDP, the Seychelles (16.5%), Maldives (14.5%), Aruba (11.9%), Costa Rica (11.4%), and St. Lucia (10%) make up the top five.
“This is a window into the powerful contribution that wellness tourism brings to their economies, but also shows how in these small countries wellness is more of an ‘export industry’ and for the most part out of reach of locals,” the report noted.
Nutrition, Personal Beauty and Fitness account for 60% of total wellness market
The country rankings also revealed how different wellness sectors dominate in different nations. Both worldwide and in most countries, the wellness market is concentrated in three sectors:
1. Healthy eating, nutrition, and weight loss
2. Personal care and beauty
3. Physical activity
These three segments account for more than 60% of the total wellness market.
The report’s findings did however identify a wide national and regional variance. In Japan, for example, personal care and beauty represents a much bigger share of wellness spending than in most countries.
For China, India, Indonesia, Russia, and Turkey, traditional/complementary medicine is more prominent; in Germany, it’s wellness tourism, spas and thermal/mineral springs; while in Sub-Saharan Africa, public health and prevention spending dominates.
Commenting on the report, Katherine Johnston, GWI senior research fellow stressed that the size of a wellness market does not necessarily capture which countries are most “well” or which have the best health outcomes or fair access to wellness.
“There’s much research to do,” she said. “Who is benefitting from the growth of the wellness economy in each country, and who is not? What’s the relationship between the wellness market and the health and well-being of a nation’s population? What can governments and policymakers do to bring more wellness to more people?”
