“My fighters”

Who am I?

“Women weren’t supposed to wear hats so the head scarf was created as a way to keep our heads cool from the hot sun. This then turned into the idea that a respectful woman should wear a head scarf. That is why even today in our culture older women wear head scarfs everyday. I t is also why during traditional events women are expected to wear headscarfs. That was our style and culture but has now turned into tradition that will last for generations”-

“We used animal fat to take care of our hair. When we were feeling fancy we’d straighten our hair using a hot stone, those who could afford metal combs would use hot metal combs.”- Mom

“Having big hair was expensive and it was believed to cause anorexia in people so all the girls and boys would keep their hair very short. We made normalised short hair in Botswana. Even today’s youth can shave their hair without feeling odd because it is part of a culture that started during my time”- Grandma
