MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR Although this pandemic is far from over, it makes my heart happy to see an amazing return to in-person activities, programs, events, and the emergence of youth sport organizations gathering throughout our sport fields and facilities! Last month, the Lethbridge Sport Council held its first in-person Achievement Award ceremony in over two years. This event which honours athletes, coaches, officials, organizations, and sponsors was the largest attended event to date, which speaks volumes to the desire of our local sport community to gather and celebrate the return to sport. It was an amazing night to gather and celebrate sport! We are grateful that we continue to stay connected through social media. The LSC staff have continue to do a terrific job networking with our community, sharing stories of local sport champions and reflecting on past sport achievements. It’s been great to see what amazing talent Lethbridge has! Be sure to check out, like, and follow our social media handles so you don’t miss out. The LSC Board continued to meet virtually over the past year, and recently returned to in-person board meetings. It is so fantastic to meet and work together with our colleagues again, as this year’s LSC Board of Directors is made up of such an amazingly diverse, actively involved, passionate group of individuals of varying perspectives. I love the different and equally important perspectives each one brings to the organization. As always, we will continue to support and encourage our local sport organizations as they adapt to whatever sport in our community looks like. We are excited to see local sport returning and participation stronger than ever. Thank you for your continued support of the Lethbridge Sport Council. Erin Low
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR REPORT Hello/Oki/Bienvenue, In a year that saw new trends and opportunities begin to emerge, the Lethbridge Sport Council team held steady and was consistently available to help strengthen the return to sport and physical activity in our community. I would like to thank the LSC Board of Directors for their vision and community involvement that helps make Lethbridge a great sporting community. I am extremely proud of the LSC staff who have been on a tremendous learning curve trying to stay one step ahead to proactively provide the most effective support to our community. Throughout the pages of this report you will discover the supports, services, and programs we provided our community in 2021. Here are my picks of activities to highlight: The continuous expansion of our network and membership growth allows us to make important connections between sport and the resources they require to run quality sport programming. The year-round indoor and outdoor Roving Gyms program provides preschool age children and their caregiver a space to learn movement skills in a safe, fun, and social environment to help set them up to be active for life. Redesigned in 2020, the LSC website received ongoing attention to enhance the user experience, new content was added, and with our local sport organizations develop the sport directory member enhanced pages. LSC had the honour to manage the 2020 Lethbridge Alberta Summer Games Society legacy fund distributing over $275,000 to 32 sport, culture, and community organizations. Thank you for helping make Lethbridge a strong sporting community. Susan Eymann 2021 ANNUAL REPORT | PAGE 3

A PIVOT PROJECT Because we were not able to hold an in-person 2021 SportFest, the Lethbridge Sport Council introduced a new, online publication called 'Sport Matters'. Local sport organizations and businesses had the opportunity to work with Lethbridge Sport Council to submit a half page advertisement to promote their programs and organizations.
This 32 page publication included submissions from 22 organizations and 5 business advertisements. It also highlighted the many campaigns produced by the sport council over the past year, and other valuable resources for parents, athletes, and coaches. See the 2021 publication here --> https://lethbridgesportcouncil.ca/sportmatters
Congratulations on launching Sport Matters! Nice work.

COVID 19 CHECK-IN In January of 2021 the Lethbridge Sport Council distributed a survey to local sport organizations regarding how they continue to work with their athletes, volunteer board members, and staff through the pandemic. We had 17 respondents representing over 27,500 sport participants. While there is no doubt that COVID-19 has disrupted business as usual for sporting organizations across the board, many of our respondent organizations have made use of this time to work on developing and adapting their existing organizational strategies and processes. The complete report can be found on our website.

DID YOU KNOW? LETHBRIDGE SPORTS HALL OF FAME Throughout its existence since 1985, the Lethbridge Sports Hall of Fame (LSHOF) has been pursuing a permanent site in Lethbridge to honour the builders, athletes, teams, and special awards inductees that have demonstrated excellence in sport in our community; and to also function as an organization playing a leading role in exhibiting and celebrating Lethbridge and region’s rich sporting heritage. The original concept of the first portable displays organized by the 1985 LSHOF board, chaired by Mal Clewes, worked well in bringing our members to the community as did the much improved and easier to move around second set of displays, organized by the 2007 board under the guidance of chair Mike Spencer. That format however, could not effectively provide the infrastructure to contextualize our honoured members’ place within the broader history of sport and recreation in Lethbridge and beyond. This limitation, in part, is why so many understood the need for a permanent home. Previous attempts in the early 2000s at a permanent site included the possibility of having our displays located at the Galt Museum permanently. Again, when the ENMAX Centre underwent renovations, discussions were had to see if we could fit in there, but unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, nothing came of it. In 2013, the LSHOF board again began preliminary discussions with the city’s Recreation and Culture staff about where such a display could be located. In April 2014, the LSHOF, led by board chair, Rob Kossuth, presented our vision for a permanent site to City Council as part of the planned westside recreation facility (what is now the ATB Centre). Following that, the council agreed to provide financial support to include the LSHOF within that project. The permanent site project became part of the recreation facility's Public Art installations in 2015. The importance of that collaboration, initiated by LSHOF board member Susan Eymann and Allied Arts Council of Lethbridge Executive Director Suzanne Lint, cannot be overstated and following further planning, the process of selecting an artist and concept for the permanent site began. In March 2019, artist Collin Zipp’s proposal and design that you see today was selected.
UNIVERSITY OF LETHBRIDGE INAUGURAL JERSEY RETIREMENT As the University of Lethbridge celebrates the outstanding sport (basketball) career achievements of Perry Mirovich and Shawna Kolaczek, Lethbridge Sport Council took a step back in time to find out where their sport journeys began. Visit https://lethbridgesportcouncil.ca/news/university-of-lethbridge-pronghornsjerseys- retired for the complete interviews. We asked, 'what sports did you play growing up?' Lots...baseball, tennis, soccer, a little bit of hockey, football, badminton, then picked up basketball and I was terrible at them all. I was usually the last pick when teams were organized so I know all too well that pain and embarrassment.” - Perry Mirkovich
When I was growing up I played all the sports that my four brothers and two sisters played. We played softball, track & field, badminton, volleyball, and of course, we all played basketball. - Shawna Kolaczek
