MESSAGEFROMTHECHAIR

Thank you to everyone who has joined us to celebrate this wonderful and major milestone of achieving 15 years working with and for the Lethbridge sport community I am so proud of all the work that the Lethbridge Sport Council has accomplished over this decade and a half This year’s LSC Board of Directors is made up of such an amazingly diverse, actively involved, and passionate group of individuals of varying experiences and skillsets I love the different and equally important perspectives each one brings to the organization.

Over the past 15 years, there have been many faces come and go from the LSC Board of Directors and summer staff, while other steadfast staff and supporters continue to stick by us even today. We have seen changes in government sport funding and provincial sport entities, new sport trends come and go Many sport community groups were able to adapt and pivot, while others were forced to fold during the pandemic As always, Sport Council will continue to support and encourage our local sport organizations as they adapt to whatever sport and play opportunities in our community may look like

I am proud of the Sport Council’s commitment to build those relationships with the local grassroots sport clubs all the way up to elite athletes competing at college and university level and maintain our relationship with the City of Lethbridge I strongly feel that the key to our success is through relationship building with our member community sport groups We will continue to lean on each other, partner, promote and work together to bring sport and recreation opportunities to Lethbridge and southern Alberta

Thank you for your continued support of the Lethbridge Sport Council and sport in southern Alberta.

MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

I have a fond memory of my grade three teacher, Ms Elder, who encourage to participate in the school's annual track and field event for grades four to eight I was so ecstatic at the opportunity Interestingly, I joined the judo cl with Sensei Elder, who turned out to be an influential role model in my life. Elder went on to become the principal of both my elementary and high sch and eventually the superintendent of schools. I looked up to her as someo could become.

In 2022, the Lethbridge Sport Council updated its vision statement to prior inclusivity and accessibility in creating a welcoming and supportive sport community The Sport Council recognizes the value of having strong, compassionate leaders who prioritize diversity, fun, and learning Every ch deserves the opportunity to see themselves in their community and in thei sport leaders, and quality sport experiences require leaders who welcome children into a supportive and challenging environment that helps them de into good neighbours, good employees, and good human beings.

Representation matters, and it's essential for children and youth to see people like themselves reflected in the programs they participate in. In order to engage with equity-seeking groups, it's important to have the perspectives of individuals with lived experiences. By prioritizing inclusivity and accessibility, we can create a sport community that celebrates quality experiences for all

"We discovered the gym one day when we went to the water park at Nicolas Sharen. As much as our then 11 month old was interested in the water, he was also interested in the colours and kids at the Roving Gyms. We didn't attend that day as I assumed it was paid and we don't have a ton of extra income. I noticed the sign when we were leaving and looked it up when I got home. When we saw it was a free program we were ecstatic. We had just moved from Calgary where we were having a hard time finding affordable things to do with our little one."

Special Roving Gyms

In addition to our regularly scheduled roving gyms, we were able to host a number of pop-up gyms in the community including:

This project, funded by the Recreation and Physical Activity Project Macro Grant Program, Recreation & Physical Activity Branch, Alberta Culture/ Multiculturalism and Status of Women, concluded in 2022.

Successes of the project

Overall Success

Despite changes in the project activities from the initial proposal, we consider the time invested and outcomes attained to be a success.

The Creator's Game

In both 2021 and 2022 we hosted a 2-day lacrosse camp with Jeff Shattler, Iroquois professional lacrosse player. Participants learned the skills of the game and the cultural significance of Lacrosse.

Come Try it Days

With community partners, we hosted events for rugby, boxing, air rifle shooting, basketball, lacrosse, archery, and Jiu Jitsu.

Indigenous History Month

In recognition of National Indigenous History Month we published an on-line Issuu magazine celebrating Champions in Sport featuring nine Indigenous sport athletes and leaders.

Coach Development

We hosted the Aboriginal Coaching Module in 2021 and the Indigenous Longterm Participant Development Pathway coaching course in 2022.

Backpack Project

In December 2022 the Pathway to Participation for Indigenous Families project provided over 150 sport backpacks to children and youth in our community.

People In Sport

Throughout 2022 we profiled and elevated Indigenous people in sport from Lethbridge and beyond through monthly features published in the City of Lethbridge Recreation and Culture Guide.

2023 North American Indigenous Games

By fostering connections and facilitating sport development, this project contributed to the selection of three local coaches for the 2023 NAIG Team Alberta.

Connections

Finding cultural champions to help sustain sport programs for youth has been a success of this project and we will continue to provide them with support.

Next Steps

Drawing on our learning and experience from this project, we plan to implement a Pathway to Participation for All (P2P4A) that includes all equity-seeking groups.

TESTIMONIALS

I had so much fun at Sportfest! There were so many cool things to try out. If I had to choose I think my favorite was BMX and roller hockey but it’s hard to decide. The lady at the BMX booth invited me to come try out their track. It was awesome and can’t wait to do it again I am saving up my money so I can buy my own BMX bike and join their team.

"I’m so glad Roving Gyms was running during the beginning of the pandemic. Not only did my toddler son have a safe space to play, but it was also a chance for my family to get out of the house for our mental health when we were otherwise isolated from others

"Much appreciated – the work that you and Lethbridge Sport Council has been doing has been great, thank you!"
