YOUNG ARTIST COMPETITION 2011 April 30th, 2011 The Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra Young Artist Competition represents a unique opportunity for talented young musicians from Southern Alberta to perform in public, with the winner being invited to play as a guest artist with the Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra. COMPETITORS CRITERIA 1. 2. 3. 4.

The competition is open to performers in all areas of classical music: piano, strings, voice, winds, and percussion. Competitors must be full time students The competition is limited to applicants whose permanent address or place of regular music study lies within the geographic area of Southern Alberta or students of secondary or post-secondary institutions located within this area. The upper age limits for competitors are 24 for instrumentalists and 26 for singers, as of March 1, 2011.

All applications must include a completed application form, a music resume and a recording of repertoire of the candidate’s choice (max duration: 20 minutes) made within the six month period prior to the application deadline. The recording should include at least two contrasting selections and need not include the candidate’s proposed solo work with the Orchestra. As part of the application, candidates must specify the solo work they wish to perform with the Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra for approval by the Competition Committee. Live audition will be judged on proposed solo work. The application must be postmarked before March 1, 2011 and must be accompanied by a non-refundable entry fee of $30.00. At all levels of the competition the decisions of the adjudicators will be final and without appeal. By signing the application form, the applicant agrees to accept all conditions of the competition as outlined herein as well as the decisions of the adjudicators.

LIVE AUDITIONS Candidates who are accepted on the basis of their recordings will be heard in live audition by a panel of adjudicators on Saturday, April 30th at 4:00pm. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners will be announced at that time. Candidates must supply their own accompanists as well as three copies of the score for the adjudicators before the auditions. 1st Prize:

$250.00, sponsored by the Helen Johnson Memorial Fund Guest solo spot with the LSO in the 2010/2011 Master Series season

2nd Prize: $150.00 3rd Prize: $100.00 APPLICATIONS Only complete applications containing the following will be accepted: 1. Application Form 2. Non-refundable registration fee ($30.00) 3. Resume of studies, awards, and performance experience 4.
