Music Director’s Message

‘10/11

Glenn Klassen MUSIC DIRECTOR What an exciting time to be the music director of the LSO! We celebrate our 50th anniversary this season; a major milestone which makes me thankful to everyone who has supported the LSO in the past and grateful to you, our patrons. The music this season reflects our history, celebrates the present and anticipates the future. Works commissioned by the LSO, including a world premiere, are combined with symphonic classics. Concertos for string quartet and brass quintet showcase the

artistry and dedication of Musaeus and the U of L Faculty Brass Quintet. We recognize the enrichment of our strong choral tradition and the collaborative relationships necessary to present choral-orchestral masterpieces. What a privilege it is to share this music with you. I am confident that with your support and participation this will be a celebration and season to remember. Thank you for joining the LSO as we celebrate 50 years of music making.

Chamber Series Message Norbert Boehm MUSAEUS COORDINATOR

photo: Randy Neufeld Photographics

Welcome valued friends and supporters to the Lethbridge Symphony’s 50th Anniversary season. A half century of quality music making in our corner of the world is no small achievement. It is a testament to the dreams, tremendous effort and dedication of many who have shared our artistic vision over the years. To celebrate the artistic history of chamber music making, Musaeus presents some fascinating repertoire composed by and for artists and visionaries within our community. Our season opens with guest artist Stewart Grant, oboist, composer, and for 17 seasons (1977-1994) the first full time music director of the Lethbridge Symphony. During his tenure, Stewart

composed several works for the LSO and Musaeus. Along with his Dance Rhapsody and Cimarosa’s Oboe Concerto, Stewart will assist Musaeus in a world premiere - Passacaglia by J-P. Christopher Jackson composed in 1993. Dr. Jackson, Professor Emeritus of the University of Lethbridge, led the LSO during a transitional period from 1976-1977 and paved the way for hiring Stewart Grant. As a composer, Dr. Jackson was recently appointed Associate Composer with the Canadian Music Centre. A genuine Renaissance man of many talents, Dr. Jackson’s works Drifting into Grey and “Bromptons” An English Rhapsody appear this season, along

with Episode for String Quartet and Passacaglia. With the departure of Stewart Grant in 1994 Passacaglia will finally be performed with Mr. Grant October 8, 2010. Along with perennial favorite quartets by Borodin, Grieg and Smetana throughout the season we look toward the future with gifted pianist Matthew Blackburn, past Young Artist Competition winner showcased in Elgar’s Piano Quintet. Musaeus looks forward to having you toast this special season with highly evocative, expressive performances not to be missed. Please join us in the celebration of our 50th Anniversary Season.

March 4, 2011 Southminster United Church Doors 7:30 pm Concert 8:00 pm J-P. Jackson’s Drifting into Grey is a work that captures the beauty and “starkness” of the prairie landscape. Arriaga, known as the Spanish Mozart, composed Quartet No. 1 very near to his premature death in 1826 – he was only 19 years old. Grieg’s String Quartet in G minor is the only completed string quartet by the composer.

The final Chamber Series concert of the season will feature works based on reflections of life by the composers selected for this concert. “Bromptons” An English Rhapsody, featuring guests and Musaeus, is based on an unfinished pastoral romance written by Brian Tyson, a bittersweet memory of one man’s youth, and is autobiographical in nature. Smetana’s String Quartet and Britten’s Simple Symphony will round out this evening of Life Lessons.

Special Events

‘10/11

October 18, 19, 20, 2010 Broadway Musical Yates Memorial Centre 8:00 pm Director: Fran Rude Musical Director: Ken Rogers

City of Angels is two shows in one, playing out on stage in parallel stories; real life and “reel life”. The real life story portrays the battle of a writer struggling to prevent his screenplay-in-progress from being mutilated by a ruthless Hollywood producer. The “reel life” story depicts the unfolding of the screenplay into a film noir movie, in which the writer’s alter ego, a ‘private eye’, sidles through a 1940’s Hollywood netherworld of thugs and femmes fatales. The stories unfold simultaneously, and with the exception of the writer and the ‘private eye’, the actors all play dual roles – real life and “reel life”–

as the writer weaves the people around him into his characters on the big screen. The full blown jazz score is by Cy Coleman (Wonderful Town) and is unique to Broadway musical comedy, also to the Lethbridge Symphony Orchestra.

Starring: George Gallant; Tony Deys; Morgan Day; Arlene Bedster; Brian Quinn; Jordana A. Kohn; Rachel Sinnott; Mark Campbell and McKade Hogg; with Jessica Ens; Stephen Graham; Sheena Lawson and Jason Ragan.

The book is by Larry Gelbart (creator of “Mash”), with some of the best double talk & witty dialogue to hit the stage.

Book by Larry Gelbart, Music by Cy Coleman, Lyrics by David Zippel. Vocal arrangements by Cy Coleman and Yaron Gershovsky.

Premiering on Broadway in 1989, this musical garnered 6 Tony Awards and 9 Drama Desk Awards, including Best Musical, Score, and Book.

Originally produced on Broadway by Nick Vanoff, Roger Berlind, Jujamcyn Theaters, Suntory International Corp. and The Schubert Organization.
