Material Selection:

Polycarbonate - Emphasizing Vertical Circulation

Paint Railing - Horizontal Circulation

Colored wall - Carved-out Gathering Space

Structure:

Podium Concrete

Design Intention:

People who have recently experienced homelessness often feel safer in a room when they can clearly see an exit and observe who is approaching. Bright wall colors highlight the community gathering spaces, while the translucent polycarbonate texture emphasizes the stairways and creates a sense of warmth at night, turning the architecture into a beacon for the area.

Exterior Circulation:

Given the budget constraints and Vancouver’s building code, an exterior circulation one-loaded corridor is an efficient solution for transitional housing, providing double-sided lighting and cross-ventilation for each unit.

Relationship with the Overpass:

For individuals who have experienced homelessness, traffic sounds serve as comforting white noise at night. To accommodate this, each unit includes a side facing the bridge, allowing the sound to filter through. Still, this side of the unit is public spaces like the living room and kitchen, preserving the residents’ privacy in their private areas.

Material Selection:

Terrazzo-engineered Stone Countertop - Vibrant Colors

OSB Panel - Natural Texture

White 06 Matt Paint - Comforting soft white with warm pink undertones

Design Intention:

Incorporate vibrant accents, natural textures, and warm materials to enhance the room’s atmosphere while leaving space for residents to personalize their environment, fostering identity and belonging. Each compact, cozy room is designed to ensure affordability and provide a sense of security. Cross ventilation and dual-sided lighting are integrated into every studio unit to promote well-being.

BETTER ANIMAL SHELTER

Date and Location:

Spring 2023 | Portland, Oregon, U.S.A.

Software:

Revit, Ps, Lumion, Ai, Auto CAD

Description:

The project combines animal therapy and shelter facilities to raise awareness, improve living quality, and build community bonds. It includes therapy rooms, shelters, and educational spaces to train shelter animals as therapy companions and educate owners as animal-assisted therapists. An animal café helps socialize shelter animals, supports adoption, and improves community mental health through companionship. Volunteer-supported training strengthens human-animal bonds, benefiting both by enhancing adoption success and promoting well-being.

GUIDING PRINCIPLES

VISUAL

Create visual connections across vertical levels, with occupants as part of the building’s dynamic experience.

GOALS

HEALWAYFINDINGBARRIER

Soft textures, curves, calming colors, and transparent glass create healing spaces for both humans and animals.

The spaces are designed to accommodate three user types—humans, cats, and dogs—each perceiving the environment differently. Therefore, design elements must address the unique needs of each user.

CAT -

To create a calming, safe space for cats, design elements include dark hiding areas, vertical circulation and platforms, visual barriers from dogs, and a color scheme suited to feline vision.

Linear central circulation offers simplicity, while waves of colors, materials, and textures represent flow for both humans and animals.

Privacy and noise levels vary across the floors, with spatial arrangement and level changes addressing these needs to create distinct personal spaces.

HUMAN -

The design addresses various scales to foster human-animal bonds, with spaces for activities ranging from active to calm and therapeutic.

DOG -

To calm dogs, design includes sunlight, visual stimulation, human-dog connections, night lamps in kennels, and dog-friendly colors, contrasting with feline design principles.

PARTI

The spatial arrangement adheres to the existing building volume, creating an acoustic barrier at the intersection of horizontal and vertical spaces.

NOISE LEVEL

The animal clinic serves as an effective acoustic barrier, separating loud spaces such as animal cafés and shelters from quiet areas like animal-assisted therapy floors.

ZONING

Soft textures, curves, calming colors, and transparent glass create healing spaces for both humans and animals.

PRIVACY LEVEL

The privacy of each room follows the entry sequence, with animal interaction spaces near the entrance and visible from the street to attract visitors.

The clinic’s partitions absorb sound and act as visual barriers, ensuring separation between distinct environments.

The Animal-Assisted Therapy Center connects visually with the neighborhood while maintaining privacy through varied floor levels.

CIRCULATION

Linear central circulation offers simplicity, while waves of colors, materials, and textures represent flow for both humans and animals.

NATURAL LIGHT

Linear central circulation offers simplicity, while waves of colors, materials, and textures represent flow for both humans and animals.

Color Selection:

The color selection of the space considers its primary users—cats and dogs.

Calm, natural, and warm tones are used in kennel areas, while accent colors like blues, greens, and yellows are reserved for play areas.

Structure:

Preserve the existing structure, tone down the column’s presence in the regular room, and color the column in the play area to add playfulness to the space.

LONDON MEWS REDESIGN

Date and Location:

Fall 2021 | Pembridge Mews, London, UK

Software:

Revit, CAD, Ps, Lumion, Rhino, Ai,

Description:

Situated within the Pembridge Conservation Area, this project reimagines traditional mews in a quiet residential enclave near Notting Hill Gate, Westbourne Grove, and Pembridge Villas. Surrounded by modestly scaled homes of two to seven stories, the area features a cohesive architectural palette of yellow or red brick, stucco, and stone, with signature timber sash windows.

Designed for a retired couple seeking a comfortable and tranquil lifestyle, the project emphasizes natural light, greenery, and ventilation—elements often absent in traditional mews. The design balances modern living needs with the preservation of the site’s historic character.

Functionaliy:

Designed primarily for an elderly couple with occasional accommodation for guests and family, the project prioritizes spatial flexibility. The layout combines serene, interconnected spaces with the ability to separate them when needed. An open second floor enhances natural ventilation, establishes a microclimate, and provides a visual connection between the ground floor and the garden, fostering a cohesive and dynamic living environment.

MARCHE MUSEUM CAFE

Date and Location:

Winter 2022 | Eugene, Oregon, U.S.A.

Software:

Revit, Ps, Ai,

Description:

This project renovates an existing café within the renowned Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art (JSMA) on the University of Oregon campus. The design preserves continuity with the museum by incorporating its original palette while introducing reflected copper in metal fixtures to create warmth and a welcoming ambiance. Inspired by a vibrant and energetic collection previously exhibited at the JSMA, the café’s color scheme infuses the space with vitality and dynamism, harmonizing history with modern energy.

INSPIRATION | MOOD BOARD

Custom Booth:

The custom booth is designed to accommodate solo or paired customers, featuring a curved backrest to create a private and intimate zone. The built-in, mounted table ensures ease of maintenance and cleaning. Strategically positioned, the booth also functions as a divider and buffer between the point of sale and the main seating area, enhancing spatial organization and flow.

Materials:

The custom booth is made from red oak hardwood, complementing the red brick texture of the architecture. The copper-finished railing and backrest surface add warmth, coziness, and a retro touch to the space.
