D.I.Y. techUP It’s game on!
In the future, the greatest challenge for retail will be keeping physical stores alive. Online shopping is becoming the easiest and preferred way to shop. The scope of this project is to create a truly unique in-store experience that will give customers reasons to come back. Today’s clientele is seeking convenience, innovation, and entertainment. D.I.Y. TechUP goes beyond the physical environment. It leverages an additional dimension through customers’ smartphones and introduces virtual and augmented capabilities. In-store only games, technologies, and learning opportunities captivate customers and tease their imagination. People of all ages and backgrounds benefit from the new Home Depot design.

N AISL TECHNOLOGY
The interactive boards provide an entertaining way to learn about products and their applications. Custom interfaces allow users to play with materials and systems, learn about installation techniques, and explore D.I.Y. solutions.
Among the many product specific interfaces, a few generic games are also available. Displayed above is a an example of a fun game to learn how to wire an electric circuit.
The interactive boards use motion capture technology to detect users’ movements and translate them into animations within the content displayed on screen.
Augmented reality is an interactive experience where real-world environments are “augmented” by computer generated content. The Home Depot App is able to recognize sensors embedded in the aisles in order to display “augmented“ informations on customers’ smartphones.
Users are able to quickly index an aisle, learn details about a product, watch DIY tutorials, and make one-click online orders. All by the touch of a finger.

IN APP GAMES
The informative touch screens are embedded within the aisles and allow customers to search information about products of interest. Users can compare products, learn about project specific applications, view tutorials, and much more. Each page displays a QR code that allows customers to download information onto their smartphones.
Each station also includes a help button. This feature allows customers to request assistance from the Home Depot staff. When the button is pressed, a light on both ends of the aisle turns on. The first available assistant will be there within minutes.
Get the job done
The monitor displays product ads and marketing material to entice customers.
As a marketing strategy, the touch screen kiosks display quick links to special offers and new products. Also showing their location on the 3D maps at all times, inviting customers to check them out.

Chad is a pro contractor coming from the job site on a busy day. No time to shop around! He knows that here at The Home Depot he can get the job done thanks to the product search kiosk where he can quickly find the location of any item in the store.
RODUC DEMO AREA
The help desk allows staff members to comfortably attend to customers and store V.R. equipment. The kiosks provide fast access to online ordering.
The see-through mesh partitions can display branding content such as the Home Depot logo or slogan. Alternatively, marketing material can be advertised.
The new product countdown is designed to excite customers about upcoming products.
The virtual reality cube allows customers to experience products in a whole new dimension. This technology generates digital and interactive environments available though special equipment such a V.R. goggles.
The boundaries of the station are marked on three sides by see through mesh partition that still allow communication between the inside and the outside.
This station displays a new product countdown that indicates the upcoming launch of new merchandise. The intent is to create suspense and curiosity for the “coming soon“ product and provoke excitement in the customers.

The shape of an exploded cube conveys the concept of expansion and reach. Customers will in fact expand their horizons and be able to reach a step further thanks to virtual reality technology.
The virtual reality cube provides an enclosed and safe space for customers to experience products through virtual reality technology.
Virtual reality is a computer-generated simulation of a three-dimensional image or environment that can be interacted with in a seemingly real or physical way by a person using special electronic equipment, such as a helmet with a screen inside or gloves fitted with sensors.
The entrance to the virtual reality cube is in the back of the station.
The Experience
Not shown in rendering is an ADA accessible ramp situated at the back of the station.
The access floor features opaque polyurethane tiles allowing light to come though from below. The lights installed underneath can be different colors and singularly programmed.
Because the New Product Demo Area is centrally located in the store away from walls and power outlets, its base is an access floor system. This allows for power supply necessary for the different areas of the station.
The characteristics of the base of this station allow for the design of the “Catch the Tile“ in-App game. Every so often a floor tile lights up allowing the Home Depot App to recognize it and display digital content through augmented reality technology.

ARDE CREATION
The overhead canopy features an integrated scent diffuser. The beautiful aromas stimulate the customers’ senses, inviting them to the station.
The hydroponic system allows customers to learn and experience an alternative way of growing food.
The work station is designed to host gardening and candle making workshops and additional special events. Featuring an integrated wash station, a scent tap, and supply storage.
The monitor allows staff members to display educational material during workshops.
The traditional garden experience features concrete planters containing a variety of seasonal herbs, vegetables, and spices. The different heights of each planter is designed to afford all people to have a comfortable experience.
The scent diffuser system consists of a network of pipes integrated in the overhead canopy. The pipes carry scented compressed air from the main dispenser hidden behind the station. Tiny holes in the pipes release different scents at programmed times of the day. The beautiful aromas stimulate the customers’ senses, inviting them to the station.

Occasionally, a QR code will be placed on one of the planters at the front of the station. This code gives access to a in-App game for users to guess the name of the scent being diffused at that time. It is fun for customers to be on the look out for the code.

Camila finds it very relaxing to visit the Garden Center after a long day of classes and work. Maybe attend a workshop or just enjoy the atmosphere while sipping a hot coffee. Home Depot really thought of everything! The beautifully scented air is a real treat.

Hydroponic gardening is an effective alternative for growing plants without soil using mineral and nutrient solutions in water. Nutrients are regulated and programmed from a central panel behind. the station.
The traditional garden experience provides hands-on learning that teaches customers about growing techniques, hardiness zones, seasonality, and much more. The concrete planters are designed to be different heights to provide comfort for all.
Quality time The stainless steel counter top features an integrated wash station to facilitate clean-up and provide water supply during workshops. Trash cans are also integrated into the work station.
All supplies for the workshops are stored in the built-in cabinet space.
Inspired by a traditional beer tap, the scent tap is an original feature that allows customers to explore different fragrances to integrate into their candles, lotions, and body oils during the workshops. The scent containers are easily accessible for fill up and maintenance in the built-in storage below.
The Garden Center is designed to host special events throughout the year such as October Pumpkin Carving.
While dad is shopping for hardware and lumber, Grace and her daughter Joy want to spend some quality time together. Why not craft a candle at the Garden Center? They love attending the workshops and Joy has lots of fun getting her hands dirty and playing with the other kids.
