YEAR OF STABILITY

To most on-lookers, the year was a year of the usual, but to those who had viewed the campus for many years, it was marked by a growing stability. Much of the responsibility for the year's progress fell on Phil Hook, Board Chairman, and President LeTourneau.

YEAR OF CHANGE

Old Buildings were razed and new buildings were raised as the face of the campus changed. It was a year of change in the economic area as interest skyrocketed and costs increased. But the price of gas did go down, if only for a while. And Reagonomics had a rocky start.

1981-82

YEAR OF SURPRISE

Each new year has its surprises as the flood of new students arrives. This year was no exception. This year's weather proved the surprise with a record 8-inch plus snowfall. Frosh Patrick Pettibon took to the skis on the Memorial Center berm for a rare Texas event.

YEAR OF ROUTINE

CLASSES - CHAPEL - SASGA SLEEP - So goes the routine. The student's schedule is pretty much the same each day - with the exception of those few evening breaks and weekend jaunts. But there are always the usual college activities - like stuffing the clothes dryer for a warm ride.

Introduction / 3

NIGHTTIME ON CAMPUS

The campus seems always in battle with the East Texas weather except during those spring and fall days when grass is green and flowers spring to life. The continuing effort to improve the campus goes on. This year's landscaping of the metal buildings - the removal of several of the old barracks - all made a major improvement on the campus scene. It is difficult to make grass grow on fields crisscrossed by the feet of generations of students and dotted with the puddles from spring rains. But at night it is all changed. The sparkle of campus lights casts a new mood on the buildings. The Student Center dominates the scene, but the arches of the library stand out and the entrance of the new dorms beckons. The front sign notifies visitors from Mobberly Avenue that the campus exists and new street lights make most of the campus visible. The scene is even more spectacular under a cover of infrequent snow.

MIND MEETS MIND

Librairy and Labs may provide a lot of backup - but no single factor can replace the role of the classroom teacher in his role of communication. Whether it is hands-on in the lab or one-on-one after a class, it is here that mind meets mind. And here the perennial pursuit for grades goes on.

HE LIBRARY ROUTINE

If the chapel is the heart of the life on campus, the library must be the mind. It is here that many hours are spent in research and reading - and sometimes it is the only quiet place on campus to study. Well-equipped with carrels, the library offers privacy. The newest addition to the facilities is the AV units providing video taped lectures in selected courses. Of course there are typewriters, copying machines and the new word processors to assist the student in keeping up with the flood of paperwork that means college.

THEIR JOB IS SERVICE

LeTourneau College has been responsible for providing all of the emergency medical service for Longview since the city took over the service from commercial firms quite a few years ago. The central- station is on campus and several substations are located in outlying fire stations. Full service is now available at three posts. New facilities will soon be opened at Regional Hospital. Students are trained EMT's who view their jobs as a public service. Some 40 serve.

Bob Blashke brought experience to the classroom.

Carol Blashke served the students as Campus nurse.

In addition to their own family, the Blashke's could always expect guests for dinner. Mrs. Blashke became proficient at strel ching the food "for just one more." Quite frequently the guests were MK's.

16 / Introduction

Bible professor Wayne House drops in for a taste of homemade bread after an evening meal at the Blashkes.

Carol and Bob Blashke were chosen to be the pioneers in a new campus project which came into being as part of the missions program. As the first missionaries in residence, they already had an acquaintance with the campus through their son Bob, a junior. On furlough from the Republic of Benin, the Blashkes are on loan from Sudan Interior Mission. LeTourneau College provides a home near the campus for the Blahkes. Bob and Beti are enrolled in the college while Philip, Stephen and Joel are enrolled in the Longview schools. Bob teaches several courses in the missions department and assists in the coordination of the summer missions project and the missions emphasis week activities. Carol keeps busy in the office of the college nurse. Their home is headquarters for many of the MK's and others who wend their way to the missionary home around meal time. Hospitality is their major ministry.

One of Mr. Blashke's major tasks was counseling students with interests in missionary service. Seen here is student senate president Stan Carlson talking with Mr. Blashke surrounded by curios from Africa.

THE ACES

-

The Aces are a duo of professional frisbee throwers who came to LeTourneau to perform and also teach professional frisbee. They performed many maneuvers both together and individually. Danny McInnis, a frisbee distance champion, showed his skill in distance throwing. His partner performed his championship free-style show. A contest held for the students saw Tom Levtris and Brent Anderson from Dorm 4 as the Campus Champs in frisbee.

SPIRITUAL EMPHASIS WEEK

Dr. Phil Hook of Pine Cove Bible Conference headlined Spiritual Emphasis Week. Hook is president of the college board of trustees and is wellknown as a speaker on campus. His gentle manner and quiet approach betray his academic background as a dean of students and college instructor at Wheaton and Philadelphia Bible College. Much of his ministry took him to the Hive or to dorm lounges or to one-on-one encounters with students seeking answers, It was a low-key week that produced results. The year was off to a better start spiritually because of this.

FALL RETREAT

Pete George was the speaker for the traditional retreat weekend at Ringgold, Louisiana. This annual event draws nearly 250 students and staff members to the camp for the three-day weekend. Bible sessions are interspersed with recreation, singing, loafing - and eating. Home style meals cooked by faculty chefs always seem to be better than Saga fare. Highlights of the weekend are the campfire testimony session and of course - the wildest game night imaginable. Cabins with names like Love, Long-suffering and Meekness remind us that the purpose of the retreat is spiritual growth. Communion and much time for personal reflection go a long way to reach this goal.

Now the LeTourneau College Car Show is a major event. This year the Car Show was better than ever. There were four big rig trucks, Marathon LeTourneau featured their new D-9, and a DeLorean was present. The car show also featured two new classes, the pickup and sport car class. There were several Hot Rod trucks and fast sport cars. Car and motorcycle dealers in town showed some of the new models, including the new Honda CX500 Turbo. There were racing films and many door prizes from auto part stores in Longview. Also there was a pinstriping artist demonstrating his talent.

Missions Emphasis Week is always a busy week. This was no exception. A very large contingent of missionary representatives converged upon the campus for a week. They were kept busy with classroom devotions and sharing in various other campus ministries. Though the two featured speakers carried the major portion of the messages, all of the missionaries took part in evening moments of sharing and in hours of counseling at the booths which were set up around the auditorium. WOMEN'S WEEK EMPHASIZES GROWTH The third annual Women's Week was held from February 15-20. Featuring nationally acclaimed author and speaker Florence Lattauer, and recording star Sandi Patti, the theme for this week was, "in thy light . . . we shall see light." Further complementing the week were chapel speakers Marilyn Laszlo, missionary to New Guinea, Martha Hook, author of two books and many magazine articles, and the First Baptist Church Handbell Choir. women's Week is a special time, not only for the female students of LeTourneau, but also for their msthers and other women in the community, who were encouraged to attend. The purpose, ". . . is not to glorify women, or put women in the limelight!" The prayers and desire of the Women's Council, which sponsors this event, is that the women "grow." For those girls whose mothers couldn't attend, a special "adopt-a-mother" program was initiated for the week among the faculty, sfaff and other women. An exhibit on the third floor of the Student Center displayed six women from Church history. These historical figures are recognized for their fight to uphold the Christian faith. The highlight of the week - Florence Littauer shared her experiences and techniques in applying the Bible to the practical issues and problems facing many women and mothers today. Another speaker, Marilyn Laszlo, career missionary, linquist, and translator works with the Sepik Iwam tribe in Papua New Guinea with the Wycliffe Bible Translators. A highlight for the week for men and women alike was the Friday night concert featuring Sandi Patti. THE HOPE Before a large crowd of over 500, The Hope performed a variety of Christian music. Their mellow contemporary style was characterized by soft tones of well-blended guitars, drums, and keyboards. They performed many tunes including, "Standing on the Rock," "What Have You Got to Lose?" Pat Terry's "YOU Got Love," and an Arlo Guthrie number entitled, "Which Side Are You On?" Another number, "Walk in the Light," was based on I John 1:7.Near the end of the concert, the lead vocalist shared with the audience his personal experiences and the story of the adulterous woman and related how he could apply it to our own livw. He encouraged the audience to not condemn other8 but to look honestly at themselves.

PETE CARLSON

Captivating the audience from the start with his music and his humor, Pete sang the majority of his songs with his guitar, and the others with the piano. The evening was a mixture of singing and sharing. Pete talked about some of life's hardships that are faced by Christians, and how Christians should face thein. Pete also introduced one of his songs to the audience and then had them participate on the chorus. This set the stage for later on; when he sang a popular Christian chorus, the audience immediately began to sing with him. When asked about the main idea that he wanted to portray that night, Pete said, "I was

I

dealing with the struggles a Christian has to go through. A Christian has a high standard to live up to. It is not hopeless, but is something to strive for. I want to challenge the students to show responsibility in their Christian walks." Many of Carlson's songs are expressions of experiences that he's gone through. "A lot of experiences that. a Christian has are not unique only to their own lives. I've gone through them, too. I'm not here to show that misery loves company, but to share hope that these experiences are for Christian growth and maturity." Well, he accomplished his goal with seriousness and humor. It was a wonderful concert overall.

TIM SHEPPARD Tim Sheppard is a gifted individual whose ability to compose and sing is second only to his sensitivity in communicating to his audience. Currently Tim travels across the United States singing in churches, concert halls, Jesus festivals, and various colleges. Tim uses his music to reach out to people in order to teach, uplift, comfort and to share the Good News of Jesus Christ. Tim has recorded four albums, his latest entitled "Forever." "Forever" is not country or ~ o c kbut rather a "pop" type album. His songs are mellow and light rockers. Tim Sheppard has written many songs for other groups such as The Imperials, Truth, The Sharretts, and Andrus Blackwood and Company. Because of all his writing for other groups and himself, Tim has acquired the nickname "Songtailor." The concert offered an excellent opportunity for students who were familiar with Sheppard's music, and for those who had never heard the "Songtailor."

THE MEN FROM "GLAD" GLAD is a contemporary Christian group of five members. Each member is very experienced and talented having studied pop and jazz-rock in a major eastern college. Thus, the group sings "classical rock." The group has backed Debby Boone and appeared on the "700 Club." No matter where they appear, the group is noted for having a "servant" and "humble" attitude. GLAD'S purpose is to spread the Gospel. This purpose is very evident in the lyrics of their songs. Some of the songs GLAD sings include "All Things" which is based on Romans 8:28, "Beyond a Star," and "Take a Stand."

RAGAN COURTNEY Ragan Courtney, poet, playwright, and actor, performed Friday, February 5, both in chapel and an evening performance. He has traveled extensively around the country sharing his testimony through poetry and monologues. Using his unique personality, he captures his audience with the dramatic experiences of the Christian and approaches life realistically and creatively. He has performed on Broadway and television, and has directed several productions, including many of his own creations. His evening performance was a western adaptation of BiblicaI characters. He portrayed characters such as Mary, John the Baptist, and Lazarus, and put them in a Western setting, giving many useful applications relating to everyday life.

SAND1 PATTI Sandi Patti is a talented soloist who is fast becoming one of the best-loved female vocalists in the gospel recording industry. She is relatively new to this profession, but she is proving to be a skillful arranger and composer. Her musical career began at San Diego State University (1975-77) and at Anderson College (1977-79), where she continued her vocal training and began concentrating on her ministry as a gospel soloist. She has recorded three albums: "For My Friends," "Sandi's Song," a n d "Love Overflowing."

Besides her convention and church concerts, she has performed at the Christian Booksellers' Convention and has made appearances on radio and the 700 Club and PTL Club. Sandi also recorded television and radio commercials such as Juicy Fruit Gum, Steak-n-Shake, and other regional "spots." This spring she was the featured soloist for the Bill Gaither Trio Tours and various Imperials Concerts. Sandi Patti not only displays excellent vocal ability, but she shares from her heart the love of God and the joy of living a Christian life.

MUSIC Music Mania had its beginning as an annual concert sponsored by the Men's Chorus, but has gradually expanded to include a wide variety of campus groups and individuals. The program is n o n competitive, so everyone joins in the activities. CONSTANCE KNOX CARROLL A touch of classical, artistic ability graced the LeTourneau College cam us as Mrs. Constance Knox Carroll erformed in concert on t e piano, the second concert sche uled in this year's Artist Series. Mrs. Carroll, an artist-in-residence at Centenary Colle e in Shreveport, Louisiana, appeared with the Longview Symp ony last spring. Mrs. Carroll's rogram included "Im rom tu in B-flat Major, op. 142" b Schu ert in which she disp ayed er technical ability by per orming the five variations on a theme from one of Schubert's incidental compositions. Mrs. Carroll also performed "Appassionata," a Sonata in FMinor, op. 57, a powerful, moving work written by Beethoven as he was growing deaf. After intermission, Mrs. Carroll resumed her performance, o ening with "Sonatine" by French composer Ravel. While p aying the three movements, Mrs. Carroll dis layed her interretive artistic ability which continued to s ow as she perFormed two selections by Liszt. "Sonetto 104 del Petrarca" and "Me histo waltz" were both inspired by the poetry of Petrarca an Nicholas Lenau which impressed the composer Liszt. Mrs. Carroll enthusiastically communicated this same impression as she performed Liszt's flamboyant music. THE HADDENS Piano Duo-Logues with The Haddens offers a thoroughly unorthodox repertoire - "A Fresh Look at the Greats" - in which the duo played some of their favorite composers representing a wide spectrum of periods and styles. With the sounds of Saint-Saens and Shearing, Mozart a n d Milhaud, tastefully mingled with Rachmaninoff and Rock, Frances and Richard Hadden brought to life the music of all ages. For years the Haddens have lived and performed together all over the world, encountering a generous variety of pianos and people. The Haddens are the only duo-piano team traveling in a completely self-contained allseason 25-foot LTD motorhome customized to carry their new 7-foot Baldwin grands.

The Haddens performed "From Bach to Rock and Back."

MURK FAMILY The Murk family, consisting of Mr. Jim Murk, his wife Donna, son Bill and their four beautiful daughters Beverly, Beck, Brenda, and Barbie, presented a refreshing performance covering a great variety of music that uplifted the soul. Beginning with a sacred chorus composed by Barbie, the youngest daughter, it continued on with five songs emphisizing a sacred focus, including an interesting medley with Christian variations of secular hits. The young people, all of whom play musical instruments, Picked up their strings and accompanied their singing with an ensemble of two violas, two violins and a cello. They were also backed up by a piano and a bass guitar. A su'dden swing in the style of music shifted the mood from sacred to secular. Selection included, humoresque, bluegrass, a Venezuelan song, and Mr. Murk singing a solo "The Men in My Little Girls' Lives." A touch of classical music was also added. A mood swinging back to sacred music wound the concert down to the end. "Praise the Lord, He Never Changes," "If That Isn't Love," and "I'll Rise Again" concluded the program. The Murk family had impressive musical ability and artistry and provided much spiritual encouragement.

Mr. Murk, his wife Donna and their five children Beverly, Beck, Brenda, Barbiq and Bill.

Stringed instruments were the accompaniment for Mr. Murk.

DENNIS & , MARY BEL;L The Artist Series presented to LeTourneau College, Mary and Dennis Bell in January this year. This 'very special couple were excellent musicians and entertained a small but noteworthy group of classical music lovers. Surprisingly, Mary was the one in the lead with her musical career as a violinist and has been a concert-mistress. Dennis, however, has done much traveling as a cello soloist and was a guest of the Longview Symphony Orchestra. They played many duets together but were certainly able to hold their own on the solo pieces.

JOHN & MARY LeTourneau College was very privileged to be entertained by John and Mary Giger this past year. They were brought here as one of the Artist Series Concerts in late April and were truly a treat. Their theme throughout the evening was love. Their beautiful and trained voices sang love songs from Germany and Italy, which they sang to each other. Mary, who was expecting their child in early May, sang nocturnal lullabies to their unseen love and they both shared their joy and love in Christ. A particularly special selection was a duet of a male cat suitor meowing his* way to conquest despite the hissing and purring of the female feline. .

Despite many setbacks, the Yellowjackets had a good year and finished better than had been anticipated. They finished with a record of 11 wins, 8 losses and one tie. The wins this year equaled the 1976 club record of 11and improved last year's record of 10 wins. Seven of these wins were shutouts. Early in the season the 'Jackets captured first place in the St. Paul Bible College Invitational and later took second in their own East Texas Shootout. The season closed with the 'Jackets capturing second place in their NAIA district but were unable to make it past NCCAA district playoffs. The 'Jackets scoring was led by strikers Odilon Rodrigues and John Adams, and halfback David Ramaly making 12, 10 and 7 goals respectively, with the team averaging 2.3 goals a game. each. Along with these setbacks, inexperience also contributed to the team's inability to finish as were unable to play and missed two full games each. Along with these setbacks, inexperience also contributed to the team's inability to finish as strongly as had been hoped. IW the Women Ir the second year in LeTourneau College have been able to put together a Cross Country team under the direction of Coach Ken Roden. Their season began with eight runners but like most anything there were a few drops during the season. The season closed with five team members; B. J. Beacham, Heidi Carstens, Brook Forrest, Lydia Jordan, and Sue Kroh. Since the team is still in the building stages, their season was not very long. It consisted of 11 races, 4 wins and 7 losses, which is quite good for a young team.

Womens Cross Country learn: Sue Kroh, Lydia Jordan, Brook Forrest, B. J. Beacham.

The team was able to win an NCCAA District 6 race as well as being able to participate in the National NCCAA Race. There were two team members that made All District in both the NCCAA and the NAIA, they were Brook Forrest and B. J. Beacham. So once again the season has come to a close and the girls are one more step up the ladder to building a top class team. They are looking forward to next year with the opportunity to glorify Christ through the running ability that God has given them.

Determination shows as Lydia Jordan sets her pace.

The team started out with nine runner participating, but due to unavoidable problem the team finished with six team members; Jamc Hdekstra, Brian Miller, Ira Nelson, Ton OHan Tom Wood, and Doug Watson. The 1982 Cro: Country team had two of its members receiv District honors, Doug Watson was named A1 District in both the NCCAA and the NAIL and James Hoekstra was given the same title i the NCCAA.

Endurance is the key as Tom Wood pushes for another step.

Although the team was holding a record of 20 wins and 25 losses in dual comparisons they were able to participate in some of the larger tournaments. They won the District 6 NCCAA race and placed second in the District 8 NAIA race. The team was also able to compete in the NCCAA National race where they placed eleventh. Being able to participate in the National NAIA race was a great honor for the team even though they were unable to place. This season was a success with both the wins and the losses for in it all the team endeavored to glorify the name of Christ. With the close of another season Coach Roden looks forward to what next year holds.

As the wrestling season opened this year, Coach Roger Kieffer predicted that this Yellowjacket squad could be the finest to ever take the mats. This prediction was well founded as could be seen at the close of the season. In dual meets the Yellowjackets had their fifth consecutive winning season. Tournament competition was rewarding for the 'Jackets. The matsmen were able to take two firsts, and two second places in regular tourneys as well as a third at the NCCAA Midwest Regionals. The highlight of the season was the National NCCAA Tournament, where LeTourneau College took a fifth place overall. There the Yellowjackets gained their first national championship ever. Tournament action took the 'Jackets to the University of Texas and pitted them against some of the toughest competition in the Texas region. Returning home for the LeTourneau Invitational the grapplers bettered their second at the University of Texas with a first. Here Stan Gingrich, Doug Watson, and Mark Lambert took firsts in their weight classes. Five other 'Jackets placed second to give the team a first place in the tournament. The dual meets pitted the 'Jackets against rivals from Texas A&M,Richland College and Stephen F. Austin University. As in the past the Yellowjackets finished strongly, winning five out of eight meets. With the close of the regular season NCCAA Midwest Regionals came and went giving Stan Gingrich, and Doug Watson each a first place. Third places were won by Tim Belcher, Vic D'Etorre and Ed Norman. This placed the 'Jacket squad in third place in the NCCAA Midwest Region. The third place allowed LeTourneau College to progress on to the National Tournament. This year gave LeTourneau College its first National Champion, Freshman Mark Blessing. Mark put on a fine performance at the National tourney pinning his first two opponents and then decisioned his last opponent 11-4 to become National Champion and All-American for the Heavyweight Division. Doug Watson, also a freshman, wrestled in the 126 lb. division and became the third wrestler in LeTourneau College history to win a silver medal. Stan Gingrich and Ed Norman placed fifth in their respective weight classes. These placements were to give the 'Jackets their best finish ever - fifth place in the NCCAA.

VARSITY BASKETBALL A new year, a new season, and a new coach gave the Yellow Jackets a new boost in basketball. The season was a tough one competing the 'Jackets against much taller teams. With a new head coach, Sheldon Bassett, the team's performance under pressure has improved. In light of this the highlight of the season became the trip to NCCAA Nationals where the Yellow Jackets took a fourth place. This year proved to be one of transition under the coaching of head coach Sheldon Bassett. The Yellow Jackets learned to use the clock to their advantage and to make the big shot down the stretch. An example of this was the victory over Tarleton State. Fighting back from a nineteen point half-time deficit the Jackets stole the victory. This was accomplished by shutting down the opponent's offense and capping the game off with a winning free-throw in the closing seconds of the game.

Closing out the regular season with a record of thirteen wins and seventeen losses the Yellow Jackets moved into post season play in the NCCAA District VI playoffs. Defeating Oklahoma Baptist College the 'Jackets went on to play John Brown University to decide the district champion. Following a second-half surge against John Brown the 'Jackets found and kept the lead required to gain a berth to National Tournament in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Entering the National Tournament seeded seventh and fifteen point underdogs, the 'Jackets were to play number two ranked Bethel College. As in the past the 'Jackets used tough defensive tactics to slow the opponent's offense and then made key baskets in the final minutes of the game to win 60-59. Continuing on in their venture for a national title the 'Jackets proved unsuccessful, losing to Spring Arbor College and Concordia College. However, the performance of the Yellow Jackets did give them their best ever finish. Fourth out of ninety-five teams in the NCCAA.

Spring saw the coming of another baseball season for the Yellow Jackets. With the return of seven lettermen the 'Jackets put together a team that jumped off to a fine start with four wins in their first six games. However, a lack of depth and experience haunted the 'Jackets as they reached midseason. Regaining their composure the Yellowjackets were able to take a second place in the NCCAA District Playoffs. The season opened with a doubleheader against Austin College. In the weeks that followed the team traveled to colleges in Hawkins, Arlington, San Antonio, and Nacogdoches. On this tour the 'Jackets saw their wins of the season, soundly defeating Arlington Baptist 18-1 and 10-4. Upon their return, the batsmen hosted Trinity College to a four game series of two double headers.

Coach Kieffer shows concern for the team's play.

As the playoffs for NCCAA District Championship rolled around LeTourneau played host as the defending champions. Teams from Gulf Coast Bible College, Tabor University, and Bartlesville Wesleyan College arrived to compete. The 'Jackets opened their action against Gulf Coast and won 8-2. This led to a game against Tabor and again the 'Jackets had the sting to win. Pressing on the 'jackets took on Bartlesville but were unable to defeat them. Moving on to the Consolation the Yellow Jackets were able to defeat Tabor once again to hold second place in the district. The season closed with the 'Jackets splitting a double header with Centenary.

This was the second year for LeTourneau College Ladyjacket Volleyball. The team sported a roster of 15 women, 10 of which were freshmen, leaving the team with a decidedly young look. With Ruthanne Calkins coaching for her second year the Ladyjackets finished the season with a record of 5-15. Team leadership was provided by Ruth Wright. Scheduled games this year took the Ladyjackets to Trinity University, John Brown University, and Austin College. The season opened with the Ladyjackets pitted against Arlington Baptist. The match was closely contested with both teams trading games before the Ladyjackets bowed in the fifth. Then the Ladyjackets traveled to San Antonio where they showed their first win against Our Lady of the Lake University. The season closed with the Ladyjackets showing hard fought wins over Richland College and Dallas Baptist College.

Over the season the squad showed improvement on offense as well as defensive play. Offensive improvement was seen in the progressive increase in the spiking percentage and the effectiveness of setting. Coach Calkins commented that overall the team moved and hustled better as they became acquainted with the 6 - 2 system of play This year was a building year for Ladyjacket Volleyball. AN ERA FADES TEMPORARY? Well, we have called them temporary barracks buildings since 1946 when the college began - but they have seen long years of service. As new buildings have been built, these old remnants of WWII days have been removed to make room for the new growth. With the completion of the new A 0 house, still another building will fall.
