LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

E

ach new academic year brings energy and excitement, and this fall, especially so. The semester is several weeks old now and has been filled with celebration and thanksgiving as we welcomed 3,003 new and returning students to LETU. We know that our university community is further enriched by the presence and contributions of each and every one of these students. We are all thankful for the opportunity to journey alongside them as they build their story and seek God’s call on their life. In addition, we have celebrated the arrival of new faculty and other professionals with promise to advance our every workplace every nation vision.

This new academic year is my 11th as president at LeTourneau University. Marsha and I are reflecting on how much has changed since first stepping onto campus, and as our students grow during their LETU experience, so have we. In the fall of 2007, I was a new president and living on campus during the work week as Marsha and our two daughters remained in Tyler, Texas, so my girls could finish high school. That two-year period of living on campus in apartment 17B is a professional experience that I would not trade for anything. Living on campus allowed me to listen and learn in unique and meaningful ways. And yes, that even included eating on campus, which quickly resulted in the renovation of the Corner Café and options for better and healthier food.

A significant portion of this NOW Magazine edition celebrates the progress that has been made in the last 10 years, so I won’t list them here. But I will take this opportunity to thank the many faculty and staff who made all of these accomplishments possible. It is the ongoing commitment to our Christ-centered mission and the daily dedication of the LETU team that moves this university forward and serves our students. I am truly grateful to the men and women God has called to LeTourneau University. We are a better university because of their investments in the lives of our students.

The ancient wisdom of Philippians 4:8 is meaningful to us. It is right to pause at this milestone and reflect on the good that we have witnessed. It draws our gaze heavenward and fills us with evidence of God’s unfailing love. Philippians 4:8 reads, “Finally brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.”

Our God-given calling to LeTourneau University is truly life changing work. The transformative work that God is doing on our campus and in the lives of students is more present and vibrant than ever before, and we thank God for that. As with any building project, there is an order of how things are done, and that’s no different here at LETU. What has been built over the last 71 years has brought us to today and prepared us for what’s ahead. On behalf of LeTourneau University’s faculty and staff, thank you for your continued prayers and support. We are glad you a part of the LeTourneau University family and we stand with you in anticipation for what God will do next.

10 YEARS AGO... George W. Bush was the President of the United States, Barack Obama was a senator from Illinois, and Donald J. Trump received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for the reality television program “The Apprentice.” Apple Computer Company announced the very first iPhone. It retailed for nearly $600 and sold 1 million within three months. Ten years ago, on July 1, 2007, Dr. Dale A. Lunsford assumed leadership as the sixth president of LeTourneau University following a national search. It was the Oklahoma native’s first university presidency. The future looked bright. Six months later, the national housing bubble burst. An unprecedented domino effect of home foreclosures followed as home prices fell by nearly 15%, lead-

proportions, now referred to as “The Great Recession.” It has been described as the most dramatic employment contraction since the Great Depression of the 1930s.

BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE One of Lunsford’s first leadership

changes was in seeking bids for a new contract for food service on campus.

Students were integrally involved in the

selection process, and after 30 years of

using the same provider, LETU’s new

president announced that Bon Appetit

was the school’s new food service

provider and that the Assembly Building

would be renovated into the university’s new Corner Café. The Assembly

Building had been used for chapel

services before the new S.E. Belcher Jr. Chapel and Performance Center was

completed just as Lunsford arrived as president. The new Corner Café was

equipped with a state-of-the-art kitchen, attractive décor and amenities including

distinct serving stations offering

fresh, made-from-scratch meal op-

tions. Opening the Corner Café made an immediate, daily impact on the student

experience on campus.

The Corner Café was only the first

of more than $54.1 million in capital

improvements that have added more

than 177,000 square feet to university fa-

cilities in the past 10 years, with facilities improvements made in nearly every area

of campus.

A bold decision Lunsford made early on was moving the LETU College of

Aviation and Aeronautical Science

under one roof to the Paul and Betty

Abbott Aviation Center at the East

Texas Regional Airport and selling our

prior hangar there. The Abbott Aviation

Center was purchased and remodeled

with classrooms, meeting spaces, labs, faculty offices and a 10,000-square-

foot hangar to service the university’s

13 aircraft.

made to the Kielhorn Materials Joining

Lab—making it the largest stand-alone

college welding lab in the country. These

expanded, renovated lab spaces provide much-needed “hands-on” lab working

space for students in the university’s flagship engineering programs.

Lunsford also authorized renovation

and expansion for 20 new offices for

engineering, engineering technology,

math and science faculty in the Glaske

Center for Engineering, Science and

As empty aviation buildings on campus became available, they were renovated

with 200 new beds when it opened in

hall on campus. Since then, older LETU

housing options have also been updated,

including Evelyn LeTourneau Hall, with

new electrical, plumbing, fire alarms,

sprinklers, internet, paint and décor

completed in 2016.

Lunsford had led the building of an

athletic program at another university

and was acutely aware of how important athletic facilities can be to a growing

university. When the new Joyce Family

Athletic Village opened in 2012, it

featured field grading enhancements

for soccer and baseball/softball, a new

field house, new lighting, scoreboards,

seating, ornamental fencing and mon-

ument gates. Also, the Solheim Center

workout equipment and meeting space LETU is known as a strongly “STEM”

A natural growth area for LETU—and

one with historical significance for the university—was the addition of a new

School of Nursing. The LETU campus had previously been home to a U.S.

Army hospital during World War II. To accommodate the new nursing

program, the “R.G. LeTourneau Me-

morial Student Center,” or “MSC,” was renovated into the School of Nursing

Building. Lab space with 14 hospital

beds and stations with mannequin-sim-

ulators on the first floor are used to train

future nurses from a uniquely intentional

Christian perspective to be effective

leaders in a high-demand, competitive

field.

LETU’s nursing program has been

accredited by the Commission on College Nursing Education (CCNE). LETU

nursing graduates have a 100% pass

rate on the National Council Licensure

Examination (NCLEX), which gives a

good indication of how well LETU nurses are being prepared to provide safe,

quality care.

“The fact that we are integrating our faith in our curriculum sets us apart from

many other nursing programs,” said LETU Dean of Nursing Dr. Kimberly

Quiett. “Understanding that all of us are

created in the image of God, and that

we are all loved by Him, illuminates the

work of nursing for LeTourneau nursing students and faculty.

Engineering Ethics Expert Leads at LETU Photos and story by Janet Ragland

hen Steve and Shelli Starrett went on their first date as high school

sweethearts, it was to a school “barn warming” dance in their high school gym in Mansfield, Missouri. Shelli, 16, was a sophomore.

She drove the car. Steve, 15, was a freshman. He didn’t yet have his license.

And her two younger sisters sat in the back seat.

Remembering that first date now, after 31 years of marriage, the two of them laugh easily together in Steve’s new office as the new dean of engineering at

LeTourneau University.

Steve, an internationally renowned scholar in engineering ethics, began his

new role in July 2017, following a national search. He said leading the premier

engineering program in Christian higher education is an honor.

“We have an awesome team here at LeTourneau with Matthew Green as our associate dean and Steve Ayers, Scott Anson and Jeff Johnson as depart-

ment chairs,” Steve said. “We are making plans and building great teamwork.

And I was impressed by the faculty here, the credentials they have, their heart

for students, their love for Christ and experience in industry and research labs.”

Steve and Shelli are both accomplished engineering professors. Both have

taught during the past two decades at Kansas State University, where Steve

most recently served as director of K-State’s university-wide Honor and

Integrity System. He also was undergraduate program director and associate professor of civil engineering. Shelli, a former NSF CAREER grant recipient,

was also an associate professor of engineering at K-State. She will begin teaching engineering at LETU in the spring semester.

Steve and Shelli both earned their

Ph.D. degrees in 1994 from Iowa State

University—his in civil and construction

engineering (environmental engineering)

and hers in electrical power engineering.

At commencement, they walked together across the stage.

Steve’s master’s degree is in civil and

construction engineering (water re-

sources) from Iowa State. His interest in

water resources stems from his love for the lakes of his home state of Missouri.

His undergraduate degree in civil

engineering is from Missouri University of Science and Technology (the new

name for University of Missouri-Rolla).

Shelli’s master’s degree in electrical

power engineering and her bachelor’s

degree in electrical engineering with an

emphasis in power engineering are both from University of Missouri-Rolla.

In his 22 years at K-State, Steve has

taught various water resources engi-

neering and engineering ethics courses. He serves as president of the 20,000-

member Environmental and Water

Resources Institute, one of the largest technical institutes of the American

Society of Civil Engineers. He is a fellow

of both the ASCE and the EWRI. He is

a diplomate of the American Academy

of Water Resources Engineers and a

member of the Missouri University of

Civil Engineers.

Steve also has experience as an expert

witness in numerous legal cases related to water resources issues including

erosion control, flooding, hydraulics, groundwater and surface water hy-

drology and siltation. He is a licensed professional engineer in the states

of Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma.

Steve says his scholarly interest in

engineering ethics began after studying as an undergraduate student the July

Following God’s Lead in Business Makes a Difference Photos and story by Janet Ragland

O

ne Sunday morning in 1952, a thin, painfully shy, 11-year- old boy from the poor side of town in Tucson, Ariz., awoke, dressed and

walked five long city blocks to a small Baptist church, alone. He had

never been there before. His family weren’t church goers. He knew no one there. He could not yet know it would be the beginning of his own new life

in Christ, or that he would also eventually lead his entire family—his mother,

younger brother and sister, and eventually, his alcoholic father—to salvation in Jesus Christ.

“I’m just an average person who God has used to do some extraordinary

things to help make a difference,” said Van Graham, LeTourneau University’s

new dean of the School of Business. “I’ve always tried to be obedient and

effective wherever God has called me, and He has put me in places I would have never imagined.”

A military veteran, Graham served in the United States Air Force in intelli-

gence gathering under a top security clearance. He completed an intensive study in Chinese Mandarin at Yale University’s Institute of Far Eastern

Languages, and after his active military service, he later taught Chinese at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, Calif.

A first-generation college graduate and the only one on either side of his

family to earn a college degree, Graham attended Asbury College where

he earned his bachelor’s degree in mathematics. He taught middle school

mathematics in a rural school in a church community for three years.

When a friend from Oral Roberts

University called him one summer saying they needed a math teacher to fill in for

someone going on sabbatical that next

January, he accepted.

“There was a gap of about six months, so we moved to Tyler, Texas, to visit friends

and take time to refresh spiritually and

work in church ministry,” Graham said. He and his wife, Martha, and their 7th-

grade daughter Erin arrived in Tyler the summer of 1972 and began attending

Grace Community Church, where it

became obvious they were about to

start a church school. Church leadership

approached Graham to start the school. “They came to me and said they thought I could do it,” Graham said. “At first I

said no.” But after praying and reading

a verse in Acts 10:20, where God tells Peter that he is sending some people

to him and to “go with them, doubting

nothing: for I have sent them” (KJV).

When the committee came to ask him

again, he agreed.

“If the Lord’s in it, let’s do it!” he said. In the fall of 1973, Grace Community

School opened with about 60 students,

and for the next 10 years that Graham

served as the school’s headmaster, the school grew—with a waiting list every

year. Grace Community School enrollment today is 950.

“Whatever God calls us to do, He equips us to do it,” Graham said. “And I do it

with my whole heart. He will work it out if I am faithful.”

Graham felt God lead him to pursue

“I was not scared,” he said. “God sent me there, so I knew it would be OK.

And when I graduated, I was debt free.

That’s not amazing, that’s God.”

One of Graham’s favorite verses comes from Philippians 4:6-7: “Be anxious for

nothing, but in everything by prayer and

NOW Magazine | Fall 2017

LeTourneau University recently named certified

fundraising executive Dr. Terry A. Zeitlow as its new Vice President for Development. His responsibilities include oversight of all university fundraising initiatives. A 1987 LETU graduate, an athletic hall-of-fame inductee, a donor, a returning employee and the father of three daughters who have all either attended or are currently attending LETU, Zeitlow’s love and commitment to his alma mater have extended throughout the years. In many ways, he is coming “home.”

What do you love about LETU? I feel so blessed to be back at LeTourneau University. This uni-

versity has always captivated my heart. My life was changed

during my college days—through academics and faculty

and staff members, through friendships that spanned across

campus. There was so much for me then, and there is so much for students now.

LeTourneau is unique. I cannot stress that enough. Having

had an opportunity to serve at two other Christian universities

and having been around many others, LeTourneau is simply

distinct. We truly are THE ONLY Christian Polytechnic Univer-

sity, and what happens at LeTourneau in training and educating professionals is energizing and exciting. Everyone who has

graduated from our wonderful university is an extension of our Savior and an offshoot of our founder. We all leave prepared to share the Good News and share our professional knowl-

edge. We are people who are not afraid to get our hands dirty,

our hearts stirred, and make a difference in our workplace, our churches, our neighborhoods and our greater world. We are #LeTourneauBuilt.

How do you feel your professional experience and faith in Christ have prepared you for this leadership role over LETU’s Office of Development? My professional career has always been in the fund develop-

ment arena. So I return bringing experience from many settings

In your new role, what would you say to LETU alumni and friends about the university? Many years ago, Kellogg’s Corn Flakes did an advertising cam-

paign where their tagline was “Try us again for the first time.”

In many ways I want to put that out to all my fellow alums.

Come back to LeTourneau! Make Longview and LeTourneau a

destination trip. I will personally give you a tour and then treat you to either Bodacious or our Corner Café . . . your choice,

my treat! My cell phone number is (903) 736-6910. Call me or

send me an email to TerryZeitlow@letu.edu. I hope you take me

up on this sincere offer. It would be my honor to host you.

special brotherhood on the LETU

aid, thanks to the brotherhood and fidelity of KZX men who had gone before them.

“The relationship between current members and alumni is so much

recipients. “This scholarship exemplifies that, and we are immensely thankful.”

Kappa Zeta Chi stands for Kina Zoa

Xristo, which means “New Life in Christ,” taken from Proverbs 3: 5-6: “Trust in the

Lord with all thine heart; and lean not

unto thine own understanding. In all thy

ways acknowledge him, and he shall

direct thy paths” (KJV). Founded in 1963 on the LeTourneau College campus, the first KZX members lived in former army

barracks. Former Bible professor Dr. Ken

McKinley suggested the letters KZX and their meaning. The mission statement

describes it as, “an intentional, lifelong,

Christ-centered brotherhood that exists

to develop and maintain academic

accountability, broad community

engagement, professional networking and individual responsibility.”

Many back then called it the “techo

a 1990 KZX alumnus and member of the KZX Alumni Advisory Council.

Relationships Matter.

Almost every LeTourneau University student learns about LETU through a relationship with one of our alumni, a friend, a family member, a youth pastor or another person in their lives. One of the greatest donations YOU can make to LeTourneau University is to tell others about us. Help us recruit the next generation of LETU students! So before you discard this magazine after reading it, recycle it by sharing it with a friend or high school students. Or share it with your church youth pastor or local high school counselor. You could even leave it in the waiting room of your doctor’s office on your next visit.

We are blessed to have you in our LETU family!
