HONORS AND REGALIA

Graduation Honors at Commencement Seniors with a minimum of sixty hours at LeTourneau University may qualify for commencement honors for outstanding scholarship and merit. Three possible distinctions may be awarded as follows: cum laude, which means “with praise,” is awarded to students who have a cumulative grade point average of 3.40 to 3.59; magna cum laude, which means “with great praise,” is awarded to students who have a cumulative grade point average of 3.60 to 3.79; and summa cum laude, which means “with highest praise,” is awarded to students who achieve a cumulative grade point average of 3.80 or higher. The Honors College The Honors College challenges academically talented, community-oriented, and highly motivated students to engage in their college experience in a way that seeks intentional intellectual, social, and spiritual formation. Students graduating from the Honors College have completed a rigorous Honors curriculum that emphasizes the cultivation of wisdom through interdisciplinary learning. Honors coursework is designed to help students use their academic gifts to think Christianly about all their learning and to work practically for the good of their communities. Honors College members must have a GPA of at least 3.0 at the time of graduation. Alpha Sigma Lambda Undergraduate nontraditional campus students with at least 35 credit hours earned from LeTourneau University and who are in the top 10% of eligible students according to GPA are considered for membership in Alpha Sigma Lambda, a national honor society for students in adult higher education. Students who qualify are selected and invited to join this organization. Military Cords and International Sashes LeTourneau University is honored to recognize graduating students for service to their country. These graduates wear distinctive red, white, and blue cords with their academic regalia. Because of our commitment to claim “every workplace in every nation as our mission field,” we also recognize graduates with international life or academic experience through the wearing of sashes depicting the colors/flags of the country represented. Academic Regalia Academic regalia originated with the medieval robes worn by clerical and academic groups to protect them from the cold of the old stone buildings in which they worked. American universities adopted the style from their European counterparts in the late 19th century. Since that time, the use of cap, gown, and hood has become customary in American academic ceremonies. Cap & Gown Undergraduate caps are traditionally black with a long tassel fastened to the middle point. Doctoral caps may have a tassel of gold thread. At LeTourneau University, the tassel corresponds to the color of the major. The bachelor’s gown is black with long sleeves and designed to be worn closed. The master’s gown is also black and has short sleeves with a crescent cut at the sleeve end; some are open at the wrist, while others have a slit in the upper part of the arm. The doctoral gown is generally black, preferably of silk, with full, round sleeves that are barred in velvet either of black or of the color used on the hood to designate the wearer’s branch of learning. Hood The academic hood is worn over the graduation gown as part of full academic regalia at graduation and commencement ceremonies by master’s and higher candidates. The velvet on an academic hood represents the degree earned. The lining colors of the academic hood represent the school where the degree was earned.

THE SERVANT “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.” - Matthew 20:26, NIV The Sculpture Scripture calls each of us to serve God and our fellow man. The Servant (1981), a sculpture of Jesus washing the feet of His disciple, Peter, is placed prominently on the plaza of the LeTourneau main campus at the entrance to the S. E. Belcher Jr. Chapel and Performance Center. It was originally a bronze table-top sculpture on display in the Washington, D.C., home of sculptor Esther K. Augsburger and her husband, Dr. Myron Augsburger, noted theologian, evangelist/speaker, and former president of the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities. Inspired by this original sculpture, LeTourneau University requested that Augsburger sculpt a life-size bronze sculpture and oversee its casting. Augsburger agreed, and the sculpture was dedicated on April 19, 2007. The Servant stands as a vivid reminder of Christ and how each of us is to serve God and our fellow man. Under Augsburger’s supervision, a smaller scaled casting of the Servant was prepared by noted sculptor Rick Rowley. Rowley reproduced the work and oversaw its casting and production. This smaller version of the statue is presented as a gift to each of our graduates. It is our prayer that the Servant sculpture will occupy a prominent place in their lives and serve as a reminder to follow Christ’s example to serve others in “every workplace and in every nation,” bringing honor and glory to His name. The Artist Esther K. Augsburger was born to missionary parents in Dhamtari, India, where she began sculpting. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Eastern Mennonite College and a Master of Arts in sculpture from James Madison University. She says: “My art is an expression of who I am. It is shaped by Western and East Indian tradition, reflecting a combination of both cultures. My relationship with God, my participation in the global community of Christian service, and my love for people has enriched my creativity. Above all, my identity is in Christ, which is reflected in my sculptures.”

SYMBOLS OF COMMENCEMENT The Mace The tradition of the mace originated in the Middle Ages when it was used as a weapon, a type of club heavily weighted on one end. The mace gradually became a symbol of authority and was carried and displayed on ceremonial occasions. Maces have been used by church officials, sergeants at arms, high officials, and legislative bodies, such as the United States House of Representatives. At LeTourneau University ceremonies, the mace bearer is the president of the Teaching Faculty Organization. The mace bearer leads the processional at commencement and other special occasions. At the top of the mace, a four-inch bronze flame symbolizes the lamp of learning and is surrounded by an eight-inch wooden bowl. A stem, 26 inches long and two inches wide, supports the heavy flame and bowl, allowing the mace bearer to carry it with both hands. Weighing 15 pounds, the mace is built entirely of bronze and walnut wood. The base of the mace is built from the frustum of a square pyramid (symbolizing the mound of earth beneath the LeTourneau Nursing Building). The official seal of the university, cast in bronze, decorates the frustum. Three interlocking bronze rings, spaced 120 degrees apart, surmount the frustum and illustrate the university’s three-fold philosophy of education - spiritual, academic, and Christian leadership. Above the bronze rings sits a circular disc of walnut which supports three tall, triangular wooden spires, one above each ring to serve as a reminder of the Trinity of God. The edge of each spire points toward the center and completes the base, weighing approximately 80 pounds and providing support for the mace when not in use. The height of the mace and its base together reaches approximately seven feet and directs the audience’s eyes to our Heavenly Father. The Gonfalons The pageantry of commencement includes academic protocol and traditional costume, as well as symbolic elements of the procession and ceremony. Among the most visible of these are the colorful banners or gonfalons, hung from crosspieces, which represent each of the schools in the university. The gonfalons are carried in procession at commencement by a graduating student representing each of the eight academic schools. All of the LeTourneau University gonfalons have several elements in common that symbolize the unified mission of the institution’s eight academic schools. Central to each gonfalon is the seal of LeTourneau University, which bears the name and founding date. The symbolism contained within the seal is unique to LeTourneau University. It includes elements that reflect heritage, commitment to the Christian faith, and quality Christian higher education. Each school is represented by its own academic color, while each academic department of the school is represented by the horizontal ribbon colors at the top. The blue color on the bottom represents LeTourneau University and is common to each gonfalon. LETOURNEAU UNIVERSITY LeTourneau University is named for our founder, R.G. LeTourneau, a world famous inventor, engineering genius, and designer of heavy duty earth moving equipment, huge off-shore drilling platforms, and the electric drive wheel. He was first and foremost a Christian. He acknowledged his responsibility to God by investing millions of dollars in missionary development projects in Liberia, West Africa, and Peru, South America, bringing the Gospel, education, and medical aid to thousands. For over thirty years, he traveled across the U.S., Canada, and other foreign countries sharing his testimony about the satisfaction and joy found in serving Jesus Christ. Each time he spoke, he began by saying, “I’m just a mechanic that God has blessed, and it seems He wants me to go around telling how He will bless you, too.” Probably his most significant ministry will prove to be the school he and his wife, Evelyn LeTourneau, established in Longview, Texas. While flying over the area in 1946 to select a manufacturing site, Mrs. LeTourneau saw the sprawling complex of a vacated army hospital consisting of over two hundred frame buildings. When told that it was no longer in use, she asked about establishing a school to serve the many GI’s returning from the war. The site was secured, and LeTourneau Technical Institute was established. From 1946 to 1961, more than 7,000 men received technical training in the new school. By 1961, the institution had outgrown the tech school mold. That year, Letourneau Tech became LeTourneau College, a co-educational, four-year college that broadened its curriculum to include many technical and non-technical majoys. In 1989, LeTourneau College became LeTourneau University, reflecting the quality and diversity of academic programs; the aptitude and international flavor of the student body; and the service orientation, research capabilities, and professional nature of the curriculum. The LeTourneau University of today is a Christ-centered, interdenominational institute of higher learning offering more than 85 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in the arts and sciences, aviation, business, education, engineering, nursing, psychology and counseling, and theology. In the legacy of R.G. LeTourneau, the university today prepares professionals of ingenuity and Christlike character to serve in every workplace in every nation.

“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.”
