FALL 2014
a message from the president Before LeTourneau University, before LeTourneau College, before LeTourneau Tech, the corner of Mobberly and Green in Longview was home to Harmon General Hospital. Operated by the U.S. Army, Harmon had nearly 3,000 beds and treated soldiers during World War II. It had been closed by the Army when R.G. and Evelyn LeTourneau proposed converting it into a school in 1945. It seems appropriate that nearly seven decades after Harmon closed, health sciences has returned to this campus. LETU’s new School of Nursing opened this fall. When the Texas Board of Nursing approved our proposal this past summer to offer a Bachelor of Nursing degree, we had already renovated the former MSC building on campus to accommodate this new program. The campus bookstore that many of you remember on the first floor of MSC is now a nursing skills lab with hospital beds, medical equipment and patient simulators.
in April when they had 102 printers working. The results are still unofficial until the Guinness folks review the photos, videos and witness statements, but I am proud of their work! This semester, work has already begun to identify our university's Quality Enhancement Plan, a program to continuously improve student learning and development at LETU. The QEP is a critical component of our reaffirmation of accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). I ask for prayer through the process, for we know that our planning would be in vain if we do not first commit it to Him and from Him seek wisdom. We value input from the alumni and the public concerning how to improve student learning at LETU. Any comments or ideas can be sent to QEP@letu.edu
Our vision is to claim every workplace in every nation for Christ, and the nursing workplace is a mission field of great opportunity. Even as we add new schools, our existing schools continue to grow. LeTourneau’s School of Aviation and Aeronautical Science is expanding with our new offices at the McKinney National Airport, just north of Dallas. As LETU was looking toward offering aviation programs in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, it became obvious that God had His hand in working out the timing of our partnerships there. Expansion has been taking place on campus, too. A newly renovated Mechanical Engineering lab provides 7,000 square feet in a building formerly occupied by Student Life offices. The university’s wind tunnel and a new Maker’s Space for 3D printing projects reside there. Other improvements include new grant-funded spaces you will see in this issue. And speaking of 3D printers, LETU engineering students got 158 individual, studentbuilt 3D printers operating simultaneously in one room, breaking the Guinness World Record they set

LETU This heritage of compassionate healthcare continues this fall as the 2014-2015 academic year begins, with the inception of LETU’s new School of Nursing. Heading up the program is the new dean of the School of Nursing, Dr. Kimberly Quiett, who has two decades of nursing experience, 13 in nursing education. She describes LETU’s program as unique. “The fact that we are integrating faith in our curriculum sets us apart,” she said. “We also have small class sizes, opposed to other nursing schools that often have class sizes of 100 or more. This low student-to-faculty ratio makes a significant difference when a student’s career goal involves
A registered nurse for nearly 25 years, Dr. Kimberly Quiett now serves as Dean of LETU's School of Nursing. She has over a decade of nursing experience, received multiple awards and professional certifications, and was integral in the creation of LETU’s School of Nursing. She believes that teaching is an inherent component of nursing. “I discovered early in my nursing career that nurses are educators,” Quiett said. “Patients and their families cannot be expected to comply with medical regimens unless they understand the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of the instructions. Later in my career, I had the opportunity to teach nurses who were learning to do research and those who were learning to care for stem cell transplant patients.” To Quiett, nursing is her calling and the way she lives out her faith. “Nursing is about ministering to God's people, people who He has created in His image and dearly loves," she said. “Understanding this truth causes me to respect students, parents, families and communities in the Light of Christ.” she said. She stands strong by the School of Nursing’s mission statement: The LeTourneau University School of Nursing is committed to educating highly skilled and exceptionally competent nurses who are answering a call to the ministry of nursing. Competence is key, Quiett said. She envisions LETU nursing graduates as exceptionally skilled for the benefit of their future patients and to the glory of God. She also wants the program to continue to grow its focus in more specialized areas of nursing. “My vision for the future of nursing at LETU is, first, to graduate students who are exceptionally skilled and reflect Christ in their work,” she said. “Growing the program to produce more nurses committed to this mission impacts health care in an extremely positive manner. Further, developing additional programs within the school of nursing and working in an interdisciplinary system with other students and faculty on our campus will ensure the success of this school.”

Kristina Ibitayo, Ph.D. public health, Quiett said. It’s widely known that smaller classes provide superior learning environments. “I am very excited about the nursing program here at LeTourneau,” nursing student Hannah Campbell said. “The faculty are fantastic,” she added. “They each bring a unique background and personality to our classes and each do their best to help us master the material and learn to apply it from various perspectives. The LeTourneau University nursing program is truly preparing us to be skilled and competent in our field, no matter where nursing may take us.” With an entire building devoted to their program, the school’s brand-new, state-of-the-art facilities provide ample opportunity for hands-on learning. Equipment includes six adult, two children, and two infant mid-fidelity simulators, intravenous arms, a CPR simulator, a Chester Chest, and a lab to imitate an intensive care unit. The practical learning doesn’t stop there. Clinical training is an integral part of the Nursing School experience. LETU’s nursing program has over 20 clinical affiliations with other healthcare organizations in the East Texas area in a variety of settings, including acute care, assisted living, chronic children’s care, and community and acute care psychiatric facilities. Faculty member Jennifer Bray’s experience includes seven years as a registered nurse at Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview, where she placed nursing students for clinicals. “She really understands what students need in a clinical setting,” Quiett said. Good Shepherd Medical Center is enthusiastic and supportive of LETU’s new school. “Good Shepherd Medical Center encourages advanced education today for excellent healthcare tomorrow,” said Lydia Dejong, GSMC’s Divisional Director of Critical Care, Center of Innovative Learning, and Medical Simulation. “We’re proud to support organizations that provide learning opportunities and enhance education for upcoming nurses. We believe LETU will acknowledge that it is more than preparing nurses for healthcare; it is about preparing them for caring health.” Nursing is a unique profession. It’s meaningful, as well as in demand. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the employment of registered
As a registered nurse for nearly 30 years, Dr. Kristina Ibitayo comes to LeTourneau with an extensive nursing pedigree. “I had already spent over 20 years in clinical nursing practice in a variety of settings, including leadership,” she said. “I had obtained multiple degrees in nursing and other disciplines, and I was a nurse, scientist and author. Teaching seemed the next logical step in a well-rounded nursing career. “I believe developing an in-depth understanding of the multiple facets of nursing enhances what I bring as a nursing professional to the science and art of nursing,” she said. Ibitayo has received nine professional awards and research grants for nursing. She has been published professionally over 70 times, provided nursing education on several continents, and has provided leadership for multiple professional nursing organizations. In her teaching, Ibitayo emphasizes not only the science of nursing, but also the art of showing compassionate care to patients. “Having a personal relationship with God influences your daily interactions with patients,” she said. “Each individual nurse can become an example within the nursing workplace. A Christian nurse needs to show genuine compassion and empathy toward others. They are meeting patients’ needs in a meaningful way, and without being overt, need to be available when patients want to talk about spiritual matters or request prayer.” Ibitayo envisions a unique School of Nursing at LeTourneau that provides students experience with the latest technology and produces wellrounded graduates.

nurses is projected to grow 19% over the next decade. As members of the baby-boomer generation all head into retirement, now more than ever, nurses are needed and being hired across the country. “There’s an ongoing nursing shortage in the U.S.,” Quiett said. “Bottom line – nurses get jobs.” “Nurses are particularly sought after by mission organizations, especially to work internationally,” Quiett added. “International service is the career goal of several of our freshmen students.” They’ll begin realizing their dreams in May, when

a group of LETU nursing students will travel to serve in Guatemala with Buckner International. Nursing instructor Dr. Kristina Ibitayo points out that students with Christian worldviews make exceptional nurses who meet both physical and spiritual needs of patients. “Because of its Christian perspective, LETU is uniquely prepared to meet a particular challenge in nursing,” Ibitayo said. “Some students may initially enter nursing school with the goal in mind of earning a great salary and having a stable career, not necessarily because they want to be a
Jennifer Bray, M.S.N. nurse. That causes concern, as attitude influences action. Our program’s Christian emphasis positively influences nursing students’ attitudes to educate nurses with hearts for patients as well as skill.” It’s been 68 years since nurses roamed the halls of the old Harmon Army General Hospital, where LeTourneau University now stands. No doubt, within only a few years, a growing number of LETU nurses will make a difference domestically and even across the globe, carrying with them both the knowledge and heart that characterize our graduates.
Jennifer Bray has been a registered nurse for 15 years and most recently was the Assistant Director for Good Shepherd Medical Center’s Center for Innovative Learning, where she found herself drawn toward nursing education. “I wanted to be involved in making a difference in nursing students and assisting them in their transition from academia to professional nursing,” Bray said. “The transition from student to professional nurse often puts a lot of stress on a new graduate. I saw this and a lack of confidence in novice nurses in previous working environments, and I knew I wanted to contribute to enhancing nursing education to make their transitions seamless. “I wanted to become a nursing instructor whose students look back and say, ‘She wanted me to be a successful nurse; she provided me with guidance and support to ensure my competence and confidence to practice as a safe nurse.’” Bray says that her faith is a foundation she incorporates into all her teaching. “I believe it is important for students to understand how their faith serves as a framework for all they do,” she said. “I believe God has a plan for the future of LETU’s School of Nursing. God provided each of us with special gifts to offer and share with others. The School of Nursing will prosper, as He has bigger plans for us than we have ever imagined.”

LETU FLY I NG H I Texas ranks as the number one state in the country for aerospace and aviation industry transportation employment, with many of those jobs centered around the DallasFort Worth Metroplex.

eTourneau University's School of Aviation and Aeronautical Science knew DFW was a place it wanted to engage new students. The way to do that was to offer a new, fully online bachelor's degree program in aviation management. “We had talked about doing flight training in the Dallas Metroplex, but didn’t know what that might look like,” said Dean of Aviation and Aeronautical Science Fred Ritchey. “Then we began looking at providing an aviation management program fully online for working professionals who don’t have a degree but need one now.” Since LETU is the only comprehensive university-level aviation program in the state,

the School of Aviation began designing a basic degree that is transfer friendly, where students can come in and get 126-credit hours with business and aviation-specific courses like aviation law, aviation safety and human factors. Ritchey said four of the fastest-growing cities in the past 10 years are in Collin County, just north of Dallas, and include McKinney, Frisco, Allen and Plano. McKinney was just selected by Money Magazine as “the Best Place to Live in America.” “We need to be in Dallas,” Ritchey said. “There are 8.5 million people there. There’s got to be students who want a degree in aviation management.” During this past year, as the online aviation management program was being developed, some other opportunities began to open up for LETU to partner with the McKinney Independent School District and Collin County Community College to provide aviation education. The McKinney Independent School District already offers an aviation academy, with nearly 200 students enrolled. Through a new partnership agreement, MISD students will be able to take dual-credit courses through LETU and get college credit while still in high school beginning in 2015.
FLY HIG
GH McKinney has three high schools: McKinney, Boyd and McKinney North. “MISD wants students to be able to acquire an associate’s degree by the time they graduate from high school,” Ritchey said. “We can do aviation dual-credit courses with MISD students while they are working on their MISD aviation academy courses on ground. We plan to have a faculty member in McKinney by the Fall of 2015.” Dean Ritchey and several aviation professors went to the McKinney Aviation Academy open house this fall, hosted by the McKinney Aviation Booster Club, to meet the students and their parents and talk about opportunities for students to earn dual-credit courses beginning in the fall of 2015. LETU also reached out to the Associate Vice President for Academic Outreach at Collin County Community College. LETU is working on an articulation agreement with CCCC that will be announced in the spring, enabling a seamless transition for CCCC students to transfer into LETU’s aviation bachelor degree programs. “We can take transfer students on a twoplus-two agreement through Collin County Community College, and we are looking to expand it with other community colleges in the Dallas Metroplex area,” Ritchey said. The expansion of LETU aviation education into the Dallas area was perfectly timed, Ritchey said. Just last November (2013), the City of McKinney purchased the Collin County Regional Airport and renamed it the McKinney National Airport. “The city bought the airport from the county, and many of the buildings on the airport property,” Ritchey said. “They have a big vision for the future.”

The airport had already built a new control tower in 2011, and added a commercial, 7,000foot runway in 2012. The city has plans for adding another runway and terminal, Ritchey said. Last year, the city hired a new general manager for the McKinney Air Center whose vision is to have an aviation education center on site. In October, LETU leased about 1,500 square feet at the McKinney Air Center terminal building. The space includes a reception area, three offices, a testing center and a conference/classroom. At the new facility, Ritchey has hired 2012 LETU graduate Tyler McLaughlin as a recruiter and student services coordinator for the new program. A McKinney native, McLaughlin already lives in McKinney and was a graduate of MISD. His sister is a senior in their aviation academy program. LETU’s conference room is being configured for a small classroom that could accommodate 10 to 12 students to begin with, but Ritchey says as the program grows, he is hoping that since the high school and airport already are working together, a larger classroom can be provided where LETU can also conduct classes beginning Fall 2015. “We have witnessed God’s guiding hand through every step of this process,” Ritchey said. “All the connections we needed to make, the people we need in place, and the interest in the program has been a result of His perfect timing.”

The addition of the new Allen Family Student Center to campus has provided some expansion benefits to the School of Engineering. The building that formerly housed the Student Life offices has been renovated into a new Mechanical Engineering Lab building that has increased lab space by 7,000 square feet, according to Dr. Ron DeLap, Dean of Engineering. “The wind tunnel moved in here from the Glaske Center to give it more breathing room,” DeLap said. “We can now take it up to full speed, which is over 100 mph. “Another benefit is the addition of the new Maker Lab, where students will use state-of-the-art equipment to design and build prototypes,” he said. “This fall semester, the lab was used primarily for freshmen who were building their own 3D printers that they will use throughout their engineering courses. We are currently raising funds to purchase additional equipment for the lab that will make it much more versatile.” DeLap said the new Maker Lab also provides outreach into the community. “We plan to have a program wherein high school and junior high students from the local community will be invited to pair up with a LeTourneau student mentor and use the lab to build things,” DeLap said. “Possible projects might include toys as gifts for their little brothers and sisters.” He added that this kind of program can

encourage younger students to develop an interest in the engineering field. Longer term, the lab could also be used by entrepreneurs to build prototypes of products they want to market. “The additional space has allowed us to open multiple sections of key mechanical engineering courses, where a single course previously existed,” DeLap said. “As we grow our mechanical engineering faculty, this will allow us to service more students with key courses they need, on a timely basis.” Moving the wind tunnel opened up space in the Glaske Center for a new “clean room” for microelectronic fabrication and testing. The clean room, funded through a grant from the National Science Foundation, supports making prototypes for Dr. Seung Kim’s biosensor research. He is designing a biosensor to enable prompt detection and early treatment of potentially lifethreatening illnesses. The device would especially be important for people in developing countries with less access to healthcare. Also in the Glaske Center is a new interdisciplinary mobility lab, funded with the help of a $250,000 grant from the W.M. Keck Foundation, where LETU students in biology, kinesiology and engineering are furthering their research to improve wheelchair design across the globe.

Our new Director of Alumni and Parent Relations is Jamie DeYoung. She is originally from Redlands, California, and earned her bachelor’s in psychology at LETU in 2003, with a 4.0 GPA, and her master’s in educational leadership from Minnesota State University in Moorhead in 2012, also with a 4.0 GPA. She joined the Development team in midOctober. Her brother, sister, and brother-in-law all attended LETU in the 1990s, and her late father was an adjunct professor working in our adult program for a few years. While DeYoung was a student at LETU, she was awarded Senior Woman of the Year in 2003. She was also elected president of the Student Foundation, chairman of Themelios, vice president of the Psychology Club, and was a Peer Advisor and Spanish grader. Her experience and enthusiasm for the mission, students and alumni of LETU will be
extremely valuable as the Alumni & Parent Relations program strives to increase alumni and parent engagement. For the past decade, DeYoung has worked in higher education at Bemidji State University, Northwestern College and the University of Charleston, holding positions of increasing responsibility in admissions and development. Most recently, she comes from her role as director of development at the West Virginia Humanities Council. Jamie is single and looks forward to returning to her old college stomping grounds. Assisting DeYoung in her new role is Lauren Land, who will work as a part-time alumni relations officer. Land, originally from Hattiesburg, Mississippi, earned her bachelor’s degree in communications/ public relations from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. She most recently worked for nine years at Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas, first as director of the OBU alumni and then director of OBU career services. Land, and her husband, Kendall, have three young children. Gail Ritchey, who served as Martha Steed’s part-time administrative assistant, has been transitioned to full time and will support both DeYoung and Land in their duties, especially planning LETU’S Homecoming 2015, which will be April 16-18, 2015, and will celebrate 50 years of Hootenanny. Lois Knouse Multiplying impact through technology Written by Sarah Shipley, Photographed by Tom Barnard
L
ois Knouse’s office is piled high with textbooks, graphing paper, whiteboard markers and calculators—the traditional stockpile of teaching tools used by math professors around the world. Her latest tools, however, don’t occupy a physical spot in the room. You’ll find them neatly tucked away in her computer’s hard drive and posted on YouTube. “If you had told me a year ago that I would be really excited about teaching an online course and that I would learn the computer video software to do them, I wouldn’t have believed you,” she said. Knouse, an associate professor of mathematics, has created over 60 illustrated instructional videos for an online pre-calculus course and is working on an 80-video series for online calculus. “Creating an online course is no harder; it’s just a little more time consuming–but once the videos are done, they can be used every time we teach the class,” she said. Today, roughly one in four LeTourneau students take at least one course online. LETU is widening its online course offerings to meet the needs of this growing population of online students. This past summer marked the launch of the LETU STEM Academy, which offers online courses to incoming freshmen during the summer before they arrive on campus. With the goal of giving students a head start on an LETU education, it quickly became obvious that precalculus should be one of the courses offered. “I wanted them done the way I felt they needed to be done,” Knouse said. “Since that was the case, I knew I was going to have to do them.” The challenge was building an online course that was just as effective as the traditional courses she had been teaching for several years. “I didn’t want hour-long lectures because students are used to watching five- to eight-minute videos,” Knouse said. “If you’re in a classroom, you can keep them watching, but to sit there for that long watching a video is much harder.” Knouse, a 1967 alumna from LeTourneau College had been teaching high school math for several years but, by 1982, suspected that teaching at a college level would be a better fit for her. “I had taught at the University of Tennessee as a Teaching Assistant, and I loved that,” she said. “When I saw an advertisement in the NOW magazine that LeTourneau needed a math teacher, I saw the handwriting on the wall.”
Online teaching isn’t the first major shift in teaching technology Knouse has overcome during the several decades since she started teaching at LeTourneau. “We were still using slide rules when I began teaching at LeTourneau,” Knouse said. “There were a few of the little graphing calculators coming out, but they cost about $400. Then the TI-83 came out, and we thought, ‘Wow, we’re going to require our students to have these. We’re going to embrace technology because this is the future.’” The challenge today is keeping students from relying on their calculators too much, she said. “The most important parts of knowing how to use your calculator are, number one, getting the formula entered correctly, but secondly, being able to defend your answer,” she said. “You can’t just say, ‘That’s what the calculator gave me.’” Knouse’s characteristic insight and adaptability hasn’t changed, and neither has her enthusiasm for her students. “I just love these kids,” she said. “They are just smart.” Knouse’s insistence on keeping a personal touch in her teaching initially made her hesitant about moving to online education. Just as with the technology of the calculators, she knew that education had to be more than simply allowing the technology to do all the work. This conviction makes Knouse the perfect person to implement new online classes; it’s what empowers her students to excel. In an online format, it’s much more challenging to build “personal” into the mix, but some unique strategies allowed her to do just that. To provide her with insights into where her students are struggling, she requires students to scan and email their hand-worked assignments to her. She also tutors students directly if they are struggling to understand an assignment. “During the STEM Academy this summer, I offered a synchronous chat once a week,” she said. “I hooked up my webcam, and the students could log in. They would ask questions, and I would work problems on the board for about two hours every Thursday evening.” Knouse hopes her online course videos will benefit more than just LeTourneau students. Often small private schools have a hard time finding teachers for advanced math courses, and homeschooling such high-level subjects can be challenging. Knouse hopes that offering these online courses will provide high school students alternative options that will allow them to take the advanced courses they want while earning college credit. n
