newprograms Two radical careers you may not have thought of yet.

Air Traffic Control Training

Starting in Fall 2009, LeTourneau is offering both 2-year and 4-year programs in air traffic control. There is a huge need for controllers, and the mean salary range is totally off the charts.

get real. You aren’t going to college just to have a great time. Yeah, you probably will have an insanely good time at LeTourneau University, but we get that’s not your main goal here. You want a killer job once you wear the weird square hat and get the embossed piece of paper. This issue of Realities Magazine highlights a couple of the hottest jobs out there. So do what it takes to get one. Explore something outside the box. Like our brand new Air Traffic Control and Civil Engineering programs. Employers are crazy about grads in those fields. And let’s face it. You want them to want you. Or maybe you’re into biology or engineering. Our grads get awesome jobs, and many of them are hired long before graduation day. Get a glimpse of why in this issue. It’s heavy on pictures and light on words. (Oh yeah, and we’ve thrown a lot of the having-a-stellar-time stuff in here too). If you want the 411 on any of these things, you know you can check it out on our Web site. And you should. Check out the rest of the story at www.letu.edu/realities.

then, get back to us.

Civil Engineering

Civil engineers design bridges, highways and water systems. The U.S. government has pledged to rebuild our infrastructure in the coming decades, so civil engineers will be in really high demand. If the idea of giving back while doing something you love gets you really excited, you definitely need to check this one out.

naturalsciences There’s no better way to learn than to dissect the material.

So the thought of dissecting Fluffy may not appeal to everyone, but it’s one of those weird things you may see if you pop your head into the biology labs at LeTourneau.

And if dissection is the type of thing that you’re into, then it will certainly help to prepare you for a great career in medicine. Check out the next page to get the scoop on one of LeTourneau’s recent grads and her experiences in med school.

extremeoutcomes Britney Prince is affecting the lives of people from their very first breath.

Britney graduated from LeTourneau in 2006 and headed off to medical school. Her time at LETU helped to prepare her for an amazing career. The photo in the background on this page shows Britney on a LeTourneau medical missions trip to Mexico the spring that she graduated. She sent us the photo below a few weeks ago, and we share in her awesome accomplishments!

“Delivering my first baby was definitely one of the highlights of my medical school career thus far. It’s a dramatic experience that culminates in a little screaming bundle and everyone in the room cries with joy. I love it. I think God’s into that. Often I feel that I’m a small extension of His work when I’m admitting that patient for chest pain, or scrubbed into a cancer surgery, or catching a small life as it slips into the world. And that is simply amazing.” — Britney Prince, LETU class of ‘06

2carecouncil It’s all about giving back.

“2C.A.R.E. Council is made up of students from a variety of ethnic / racial backgrounds who work to ensure that the breadth of God’s creation, on this campus and in the greater community, feel welcomed and affirmed.” — Carlton Mitchell, staff sponsor for 2Care Council

This past Christmas, the 2Care Council put together a toy drive to collect toy donations from the students, faculty and staff at LeTourneau that they, in turn, supplied to Longview’s local Toys-For-Tots programs. Thanks to the hard work of LeTourneau students, Christmas was more than just another day for a group of local families with little kids.

materialsjoining It’s a big melting pot of a bunch of different engineering disciplines.

Materials Joining Engineering (MJE) is a killer combo of materials, mechanical, structural and electrical engineering. You basically apply those fundamentals to the development and application of joining technology. MJE jobs make an unseen but major difference‌ by inventing safer, more efficient processes and stepping up the performance and integrity of everything from stuff you buy at Wal-Mart to satellites and spaceships.

oneworldcafe Try on another culture.

LeTourneau students come from all 50 states and a ton of countries. And we send students as missionaries all over the world each year. So every winter, LETU students host the “One World Cafe, where they can share foods and culture from their native (or not so native) lands.

intersocietyropepull Love your neighbor. Yank him into the pond.

The annual Intersociety Rope Pull pits the strength of the guys from the AO house against those from the KZX house. The only consistent winners are the spectators who are guaranteed each year to see at least one of the two groups pulled into the mud.

robotcompetition Because cleaning a window by hand is SO high school.

Robots are unpredictable. Sometimes they work exactly like you designed them to. Sometimes they don’t. Sometimes they destroy the local shopping mall in Saturday afternoon movies.

At this point, none of the robots have gone on a wild rampage. That said, we are hearing good things about this semester’s engineering classes.

Our robot window washer competition has one simple goal: remove all of the dry erase dots from the window by creating a robot that will follow a program that is engineered by our students.

yellowjacketathletics Popcorn. Peanuts. Baseball. Softball.

“There are 17 of us on the team this year and it is amazing to be able to count on every single one of them. We are all there for each other, no matter what we are going through individually. Being on the field is our way of escaping reality and using the gifts and talents God has given us to glorify Him. We have a group of very talented ladies this year, and we have the abilities to make it far.” — Kylie Packard

studentlife:hootenanny A talent show of proportions you have to see to believe.

Hootenanny is the event of the year. Seriously. Alumni come back each year just to check out how crazy things have gotten and what sort of insanity the young, creative current LETU students can come up with. At its heart, Hootenanny is a variety show that utilizes the talents of the students to entertain. It’s often a little bit crazy. Or totally off the wall.

“Hootenanny is the biggest tradition on our campus! For almost 50 years, students, faculty and staff all come together for this hilarious variety and talent show to let off some steam. In fact, more and more alumni come back every year to join in on the community and campus life.”

— Corey Ross, Associate Dean of Student Life
