College is a journey, not a destination. And the lessons learned outside of the classroom are every bit as profound as those learned in it. Do you have to attend LeTourneau University to travel to Russia or Cambodia? Probably not, but when international travel is added on top of an already unbelievable education, the experience is richer and brings life to your education. Trip #1: Russia David’s view of the world expanded as he learned about Russian culture and Church history and traditions during a summer trip to St. Petersburg and Moscow. The trip was sponsored by LeTourneau’s Department of Theology as part of classes on Russian culture and Eastern Orthodoxy. During the two-week trip, David and other LETU students stayed at St. Petersburg Christian University and took morning classes from a Russian professor. In the afternoons, they had fun figuring out (and getting lost in) the subway system as they explored the city and visited historical sites, cathedrals and museums. The group also visited the Kremlin and Lenin’s tomb on a weekend trip to Moscow, which gave them the chance to ride a bullet train through Russian countryside.

Trip #2: Cambodia After Russia, David flew back to Longview for a week to prepare with six other engineering students for a month-long trip to Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia. A LeTourneau professor led the trip to help at an orphanage founded by a Korean missionary. Along with experiencing lots of both fun and frustrating cultural adaptions, David learned to lay a brick wall, taught English to kids in the orphanage, plowed a field, and helped fix a well. The most valuable thing he realized while working in a different culture was that building strong relationships with people has to come before doing things for them—one lesson that can’t be learned in a classroom.

What is biomedical engineering? It’s what you get when you mix a solid dose of biology, anatomy and physiology into a foundation of engineering. It’s a crazy cool field of study that analyzes the human body as though it is one big machine and then finds unique ways of using technology to help solve anatomical or physiological problems! That can mean the designing of prosthetic limbs, researching platelet adhesion, developing new medical techniques and a ton of other applications. Oh, and not only is this field super fascinating, graduates are in really high demand. And LeTourneau University’s program is one of the very best!

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So the thought of cramming 19 of your floormates into a small Mazda hatchback or dressing up a lá Robin Hood: Men In Tights might be considered a bit geeky. That’s the thing here at LeTourneau. We get it. Geek IS the new cool. And it’s really on display during Fall Fest week at LETU. During this annual event, student floors each pick a theme and participate in competitions. It’s about not being afraid to be yourself. It’s about a willingness to drop your guard and just have fun! And, well, it’s about looking downright amazing in your green tights, nun’s habit, hillbilly or Where’s Waldo garb.

As you get to the end of the school year, it seems that every lab you pop your head into is whirling and churning with gears and flying doo-hickeys. Small explosions precede well-placed statements of “Oops, that didn’t work.” And our students practically live in the Glaske Center for Science and Engineering as they experiment late into the nights. Textbooks are completely overrated. Sure, they’re necessary, and you’ll have plenty of them in your classes. But the real fun begins when you can take all those theories and apply them to your own incredible work. With state-of-the-art labs in every major from engineering to aviation to chemistry, and even teacher education, LETU students learn by doing. By building. By seeing for themselves what would happen if you just applied a liiiiiiiittle more pressure.

Seriously, we don’t believe the real Titanic would have sunk if a LeTourneau University engineer had been on the design team. On the 100th anniversary of the Titanic’s demise, a group of students from Thomas 3 made a replica of the Titanic and reenacted the entire sinking scene in our annual cardboard race competition. The only rules: the boat can only be made with cardboard, duck tape, and paint. This particular contest entrant came complete with their own Jack and Rose and offered a stirring (okay maybe not so stirring) rendition of “My Heart Will Go On” as they journeyed across the university duck pond. Sadly, the cardboard Titanic did not win the race. It sunk halfway across the pond after being hit by an “iceberg”—a LETU student dressed in white.

LeTourneau University’s Belcher Center is one of the finest performing arts facilities in the nation (in addition to being our chapel). And we bring in some seriously stellar shows like CATS, Celtic Woman, Shrek the Musical, STOMP, Newsboys and NeedToBreathe...the list just goes on and on. So when Phil Keaggy came to campus this Fall, our students jumped on the opportunity to spend an hour with him and pick his brain about music and worship and being a passionate follower of Jesus Christ. Spending the morning with the finest Christian guitarist in the world...that’s just part of being an LETU student.

To hear what Phil had to say, you can watch a short video by scanning this code on your phone.

Imagine growing up without the ability to walk. For sure, your parents would probably have gone to any length to help you. If you’d been born into poverty in Kenya, though, your parents could do little to help. That’s where the LeTourneau University WHEELS team comes in. Working with several world-renowned organizations, our students are helping to redesign wheelchairs so that they can move efficiently, safely, (and most importantly, without breaking) over the rough terrain of the African landscape. The team spent several weeks in Kenya this past summer working with the kids, doing research, and bringing the love of Jesus Christ with them at the same time.

Hanging out. It’s just what ya do when you’re in college and not in class. There is always something going on at LeTourneau University, between student activities, higher than 85% participation rate in intramural sports, video game compeitions...you name it. But sometimes, it’s just nice to grab a cup of coffee and chill. For LETU students, no place will offer more opportunity for that than the brand new Allen Family Student Center on campus. It won’t be done until the summer of 2014, but you’re gonna be here for 4 years. So there’ll be plenty of time to help us break in this awesome new facility. It’ll be brand new and all yours! There’s even a dedicated video gaming room to get your WOW or Halo fix!

Don’t believe us that this building is really coming soon? Just go to http://campaign.letu.edu/live.html We seriously sit and watch this thing all the time. And sometimes we send people out there to wave at us while we’re watching.

If you have never heard the story of Nate Saint and the missionaries who traveled into the heart of Ecuador in the mid-1950s, then you should really watch the movie “The End of the Spear.” The story of the missionary pilots who were martyred by the local people there was a story that LETU student Jovita Perez knew well. And as a missionary aviation student, one of Jovita’s class requirements was to take a “Vision Trip.” On these trips, LETU students fly with an international missionary aviation organization like Missionary Aviation Fellowship (MAF). MAF took Jovita and several other LeTourneau missions aviation students down to Ecuador this past summer to meet the tribe that came to know Christ after Nate Saint’s death. It’s not every day that you have the chance to walk in the footsteps of one of your greatest heroes. It’s not every day that you can meet one of the most remote tribes of people left on the planet. It’s not every day that you can change lives by delivering food and medicine to these areas. But these things are all in a day’s work for the wonderful men and women of Mission Aviation Fellowship and our LETU students who travel with them.

Our students don’t just sit in class (okay, maybe sometimes). They get out and put their brains to work in the LETU labs on real-world research projects alongside our first-rate faculty! This group is working on something that will really get your motor running – fuel. Since 2006, LeTourneau University students have been working with LETU Bio professor Dr. Andrée Elliott on this project. Together, they’re figuring out how to genetically engineer their own biofuel brew. But how are they doing it? Well, that’s a secret. Once all the research is done, Dr. Elliott hopes to have the process patented. So for now, she and her students have to keep the details under wraps!
