get real. LeTourneau University. Here, it’s ok to be crazy-in-love with flying airplanes, welding things together or playing softball. If you really like studying and playing video games, that’s ok, too. If you think a midnight run to IHOP sounds like a good idea or a medical mission trip to an Aztec village in Mexico sounds like fun. . . LETU might be the place for you. We are seriously committed to academics, but lots of crazy stuff happens here. Last year our president went skydiving with a few students; how many schools can say that? Only at LeTourneau. . . Check out the rest of the story at www.letu.edu/realities.
then, get back to us.
This issue of LeTourneau Realities focuses on the things that happen in the spring semester at LeTourneau University. Missions trips are huge during Spring Break!

“We
had been preparing for months, people had prayed for us, and now the time had come for it to be put into action. That night we all agreed that we needed to pray for strength and boldness - basically we just needed to be willing to let God use us however He wanted to. -Anna Coley, Finance

“The experience of traveling out of the United States while serving God - I would do again in a heartbeat!” LeTourneau students show God’s love all over the world. We go to countries like, Mexico, Holland, Estonia, Kenya and Bangladesh, just to name a few.

“LeTourneau offers an incredible advantage in training engineers. We get involved and get real hands-on experience. Our professors put a lot of emphasis on undergrad research, most undergrad programs, especially in welding, don’t focus on undergrad research. By the end of my sophomore year I was sure that I loved this ‘engineering stuff.’ It’s been a blast so far!” -Jerica Cadman, Engineering, Materials Joining

“Each time an airplane soars above us, every single head turns to marvel at the airplane as if it’s the most beautiful thing they’ve ever seen. I love that.” -Eugene Sung, Aeronautical Science, Flight

NIFA stands for the National Intercollegiate Flight Association. Our Sting Precision Flight team wins trophies every year at their annual competitions. This year, we took 1st place at regionals.
“There are teams from small private schools, state universities, and the Air Force and Navy service academies. . . Our team had the honor of being near the top of the Judge’s Choice award for overall excellence and team presence.”
-Ruedi Schubarth, Aeronautical Science, Flight Science
assignmentbangladesh taking class way outside the classroom
In their lab here at the university, LEGS (LeTourneau Engineering Global Solutions) designs, creates, and tests high-quality prosthetic legs for patients across the under-developed world. In summer 2006, LEGS went to Bangladesh. While there, they worked with Memorial Christian Hospital to fit six amputees, taught clinicians how to make the LEGS prosthetic device and rehabilitation to help amputees walk comfortably on their new prosthetics.
“It
was absolutely incredible to see the difference in the patients’ demeanors. They had appeared downtrodden and sullen when we arrived, but by the end of the trip, they had learned how to play soccer, pedal a rickshaw and walk.” -Micah “Goat” Casteel, Engineering, Welding These photos all shot by LEGS team members.

Once a year, the Dorm 4 guys have a massive party on the berm. “It’s open to anyone who wants to come; we just want to have fun at the end of the year! It’s always the week before exams. There’s loud music and free food: fries, BBQ, hot dogs, and brisket.” -Stevo Jian, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering

“In 2005, my freshman year, we beat East Texas Baptist University for the first time in the softball’s history. That was one of the games that we will never forget. We went in as the underdogs and came out victorious because of a team effort and faith in each other.”

“If
my friends and I are feeling rather adventurous, we take a camping trip to Atlanta State Park or Caddo Lake. Or, if the weather is good, a lake day out at Lake O’ the Pines is always a good time.” -James Thompson, Engineering Technology
There is an endless supply of interesting things to do in East Texas. You can celebrate the many wonders of the yam at Gilmer’s annual Yam-boree. Or attend the East Texas Rodeo or Gregg County Fair. Dallas is only a couple hours away, so seeing Cowboys football or Ranger baseball is as easy as hopping in the car. If you’re into the nature thing, there are lakes-a-plenty and camping within a 10 minute drive of town.
