Want an even closer look? Take a tour of LeTourneau without setting a foot on our campus. You’ll see the insider’s view of our facilities, from engineering labs and our airport hangar to the Corner Café, and catch a glimpse of current LETU students doing their daily thing. You can take a walk through every facility by going to www.letu.edu/tour.
Zero in on the authentic, behind-the-scenes realness of LeTourneau University. Realities magazine serves up a look at the everyday life of LETU students. We’re bringing you the fly-on-the-wall view of some cool stuff our students are up to, like hanging out with horses in bio lab and getting their culture on at Our World Cafe. Zoom in and catch a closer shot of what makes LeTourneau the place to figure out what you want to do with your life – and have a stellar time doing it. Our grads go on to do thousands of different things (including making spy satellites in aerospace engineering!) but all have one thing in common: They all start here.
For most of us, the greatest thing we ever build is a high score in Angry Birds. For LETU civil engineering students, learning to build bridges, tunnels, skyscrapers, pipelines, and stadiums make supporting a strong global future an everyday thing. Civil engineering may have ancient roots, but it’s one hot career today. Our new civil engineering labs are the perfect place to measure, weigh, survey and plot the next great structural and water resources engineering projects. Not to mention, our students also focus way farther than campus when considering solutions to global problems, such as how to bring clean water to rural Africa. “Hydrology, meet humanitarian.”

It may be 5,731 miles to Moscow, but LETU students bring their global cultures right here to campus every year. Our World Cafe is an annual event that allows our students (who come from 26 nations around the world) to represent their home nation, whether that’s by serving up your family’s kimchi dish or wearing your favorite sari. Either way, our international students pile on the culture by sharing foods and language, while answering questions that other students have about the country they call home. Our World Cafe takes place during Missions Emphasis Week, a fiveday, 47-year tradition of on-campus interaction with missionaries from around the world. Attendees this year heard from a Zambian a cappella group and a missionary from Papua New Guinea who lived in the jungle for 24 years, translating God’s word for people who didn’t have a written language. No matter where you start or where you go spreading God’s love, you’ll fit in here.
What do the Mad Hatter and Mrs. Pac Man have in common? They were just two of the characters running around the LETU campus during the latest Fall Fest frenzy. Fall Fest is an annual week of way-fun weirdness, during which brother-sister residence hall floors pick an off-the-wall theme to embody as a group (think papermâché, masks, Goodwill outfits and weird foil headgear) and compete with other floors in zany activities. You won’t want to be late for this very important date!
At LETU, biology students look way beyond a microscope. In fact, one of our bio labs recently ditched their on-campus digs and went 100% equestrian. This comparative anatomy class made research real by heading out to a local ranch and measuring the horses’ bone structure and heart rates — and then did the same with humans to compare their findings. We’ll admit, it’s not every day science students can trade lectures for reins and a saddle, but at LETU we’re all about making what you learn anything but boring. And what the hay, if it helps you discover that pre-vet is your thing, we’ve got you covered on that too.

Every LETU engineering student spends time working on a senior design project — but this one flies the highest. In fact, our AeroDesign team just took first place overall at the AeroDesign West competition, where students from 58 teams from schools around the world completely designed and built a remote control airplane from scratch (and of course tested it out on competition day).

Their goal? To try and lift the maximum amount of payload weight and land safely after completing a circuit of the airfield. The result? The LETU plane’s lightest weight + low drag + maximum payload weight = Realllllly big win. This is just one way LETU engineering students simultaneously build their future career skills and have a seriously fun time (and win).

This year’s LETU men’s and women’s soccer teams do more than kick it on the field. They also represent a major mix of states, stretching from Maine, to Texas, to California, and countries around the globe, including Kenya, Zambia, Guatemala, South Korea, Liberia and Cameroon. The coolest part? These are just a few of the 170 YellowJackets competing in LETU’s 13 varsity athletic programs as part of the American Southwest Conference, NCAA Division III.

LeTourneau Spirit = The intense state of YellowJacket fandom that surfaces every season when LETU athletes break out the cleats and uniforms to bring it on the field. Warning: LeTourneau Spirit can lead to yellow and blue skin tones, uncontrollably loud noises and prolonged bleacher-butt. Other common side effects include the inability to let go of hand-painted “Go Jackets posters, wearing out your LETU athletics tee, waving large flags, yelling bursts of inspirational phrases to your professor while sitting in calculus class, and moving your furniture to the soccer field for the rest of the season.

Greetings from the cockpit. This is where LETU flight students spend roughly 10,000 hours per year. Good thing booking time in the Texas skies in our university-owned fleet of aircraft has never been more fun. We know – we’ve been training pilots for more than 50 years. And in the past two, we’ve been named the most outstanding aviation program in the nation and received the American Airlines Safety Award. Even when you’re on the ground at our Abbott Aviation Center, you’ll have a blast in brand new technoriffic simulators. Whether you want to go into commercial, military or missionary aviation – and more – it all starts right here.

There’s a whole different kind of home at college. Ok, so it’s less mom’s homemade cooking and more floormates camping out in your room discussing who knows what for hours on end, but it’s a second family you’ll never forget. At LETU, residence life is more than a place to sleep. Here, it’s all about floor unity, no matter which dorm you live in. With more than 10 living options, including residence halls and apartments, you’ll find your floor fit and make a suite, furnished apartment or society house your home base hangout on campus.
All our residence halls are top-notch. Each has either opened or been seriously renovated within little more than the past decade. All are single-gender and offer plenty of sit-around space, with cable TV and wireless Internet available in every living area. Plus, there’s more square footage on the way… LETU’s latest on-campus living option is still under construction and set to open this fall. Each wing includes an open floor lounge with a kitchenette and study room. The building also has a large public lobby, complete with a massive fireplace. It’s built with your comfort in mind, to make living on campus become your favorite home away from home – from day one.

At LETU, business goes beyond borders. Take Danae, a junior marketing major who spent her service learning internship in Battambang, Cambodia, where she worked in a coffee shop. Her education collided with culture as she researched marketing and efficiency-improving possibilities for the shop, underwent a traditional Khmai makeover (photo at bottom right) and visited the temples of Angkor Wat. Danae is just one of numerous LETU business students who spend semesters all over the world turning textbook topics into something-to-write-home-about experiences — and 5 out of 5 agree that immersing yourself in a cross-cultural business setting sure beats four years of lectures at State U.

OK, we’ll admit the cliches about learning to teach future generations and make the world a better place sound 100% cheesy, but we’ll also admit they’re more than a little true. Educators – whether in grade school or high school – make an impact. LETU teaching grads make a difference in countless classrooms. In fact, for the past five years our university has produced more teachers than any other private school in Texas.
