Protoconcept Golf Announces Its All New C05TP Forged Irons Are Now Available

PROTOCONCEPT GOLF, a high-profile luxury Japanese golf club manufacturer, is thrilled to announced that the TOUR driven, all-new, Golf Digest “Hot List” recipient, C05TP forged irons, have shipped into retail.

“It is tremendous to have the new C05TP forged irons in stock. They’ve been in high demand since the ‘Golf Digest’ list was published,” said Marcy Kamoda, CEO of PROTOCONCEPT GOLF. “We’re fulfilling orders to our key accounts like True Spec Golf who will have C05TP forged irons available in all 50 stores.”

To pursue the perfect trajectory, PROTOCONCEPT GOLF sought out guidance and feedback directly from TOUR professionals to redesign the C05 forged irons. The new C05TP forged irons boast both forgiveness and accuracy known from their predecessor but encourage a better trajectory.

In addition to the TOUR professionals’ feedback, the engineers utilized 3D CAD technology to redesign each iron in the C05TP forged iron set. Significant improvements were made to employ the maximum spin possible as well as unbeatable distance.

“3D CAD technology strategically positioned the center of gravity (CG) of each C05TP forged iron differently for a better launch and playability,” added Kamoda.

The newly designed head construction provides enhanced feel. The SAE8655 chrome molybdenum steel face with high-level stiffness has been drastically redesigned. The newly designed C05TP face is engineered to produce bounce and improve feel, a challenge with its predecessor. No resin or other materials were used, so only the crisp feel of viscous metal can be felt at impact.

The trajectory of the entire C05TP forged iron set has been significantly improved. For the mid irons and higher irons, the launch angle has been boosted to promote more spin and improve the ability to stop the ball on the green. The shorter irons are engineered to deliver distance without flying the ball too high.

A GAP Wedge Iron is included in the C05TP forged iron set and is positioned below the pitching wedge (PW), with a loft of 50 degrees. To hit from a variety of lies, they are designed for the face to open easily, and a complex sole grind to generate increased spin.

Renowned for its exceptional skiing, luxurious accommodations, and an array of year-round activities, Boyne has consistently drawn visitors looking for adventure and relaxation. With a rich history and a commitment to providing top-notch accommodations, Boyne Mountain Resort remains a must-visit destination for those seeking an unforgettable outdoor getaway.

A GLIMPSE INTO BOYNE RESORT’S HISTORY

Boyne Mountain Resort’s roots trace back to 1947 when founder Everett Kircher purchased the land for a mere dollar, envisioning a world-class ski destination. A ski enthusiast himself, Kircher made it his mission to turn the Boyne region into a winter sports hub. His efforts paid off quickly. In 1948, Boyne Mountain opened its first ski slopes and became home to the Midwest’s first chairlift, a revolutionary concept for the region at the time.

The success of the ski resort paved the way for expansion, and Boyne has since evolved into a year-round destination, offering much more than skiing. From golf and mountain biking in the summer to ziplining and snowboarding in the winter, Boyne has become synonymous with adventure and luxury. Over the decades, it has grown into one of the largest resorts in the Midwest, known not only for its world-class skiing but also for its premier accommodations and family-friendly activities.

THE SKYBRIDGE: A LANDMARK ATTRACTION

One of Boyne Mountain Resort’s most striking features is its SkyBridge, the longest timber-towered suspension bridge in the world. Opened in 2022, the SkyBridge was designed to give visitors a truly unique experience, offering panoramic views of the Boyne Valley and surrounding landscapes. Spanning 1,200 feet between two mountain peaks, the bridge is suspended nearly 120 feet above the ground at its highest point, creating an exhilarating experience for those brave enough to walk across.

Constructed from heavy timber and steel, the SkyBridge was designed to blend harmoniously with the natural environment while offering a safe, thrilling adventure. Guests who cross the bridge are rewarded with sweeping views of the valley below, the rolling hills, and Boyne’s expansive forests. In the fall, the bridge offers a front-row seat to Michigan’s famous autumn foliage, while in the winter, visitors can gaze upon snowcovered peaks and ski trails.

The SkyBridge has quickly become a major draw for tourists, attracting not only adventure seekers but also nature lovers, photographers, and families who want to experience Boyne’s beauty from a new perspective. Whether it’s a summer stroll or a winter adventure, the SkyBridge provides an unforgettable experience year-round.

WORLD-CLASS SKIING AT BOYNE MOUNTAIN RESORT

At its heart, Boyne Mountain Resort remains one of the Midwest’s top ski destinations, boasting over 60 trails across more than 415 acres of skiable terrain. From gentle beginner slopes to challenging black diamond runs, the resort caters to skiers of all abilities.

Boyne Mountain is also known for its extensive snowmaking capabilities, ensuring excellent skiing conditions even during winters with lighter snowfall. Its signature slopes like Hemlock and North Boyne challenge advanced skiers, while the resort’s Ski & Snowboard Academy offers lessons for those just getting started. Snowboarders and freestyle skiers can enjoy four terrain parks, offering features like jumps, rails, and boxes to practice tricks.

For those looking for an alternative to skiing, Boyne also offers fat-tire biking, tubing, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing, making it a winter paradise for outdoor lovers.

Nemacolin

Nemacolin, Pennsylvania’s premier luxury golf resort destination, has been named among Golf Digest’s “50 Best Golf Destinations for Women.”

The Golf Digest editorial team polled its female teachers and course-ranking panelists to vote on the best American golf resorts they would recommend to other women. The team thoroughly researched and vetted the results, to compile a list of the 50 Best Golf Destinations for Women.

“As more women join the game — 800,000 from 2019 to 2023, according to the National Golf Foundation — more realize one of the greatest experiences for any golfer is gathering your friends and taking your collective love of golf on the road,” said Keely Levins, assistant editor of Golf Digest. “To help you and your friends plan your next great golf trip, we talked to women golfers and instructors across the country to curate this list of 50 destinations in the United States that would all make a great choice for a women’s golf trip.”

The Golf Digest article goes on to acknowledge that every group seeks something different in a golf getaway, which is why this list is full of unique

experiences – whether a group of friends wants to travel and only play golf, wants to mix in other activities, easily access a top-notch spa, or include wining and dining.

The article specifically singled out Nemacolin’s quality of golf and broad array of resort amenities: “A mainstay on our ranking of the Best Resorts in the Northeast, Nemacolin offers five different, high-end lodging options. The two courses, Mystic Rock and Shepherd’s Rock, are both ranked among the Best Courses in Pennsylvania. And for any other non-golfer or to vary the itinerary, your group can also experience wine tastings and cooking classes.”

Chris Anderson, Nemacolin’s director of golf operations, says “It’s a great honor to be named one of the country’s top destinations for women to visit by Golf Digest’s panel because these golf courses offer a unique experience from each set of tees and our culture here is welcoming and fun. From small groups and larger events, it’s fun to see our guests get here and truly escape from the everyday world as they play these beautiful golf courses and explore all the amazing things the resort has to offer.”

Nemacolin’s guests enjoy the best of everything at a larger-than-life resort paradise nestled in the Allegheny Mountains and home to Mystic Rock and Shepherd’s Rock, two imaginative championship courses designed by the legendary Pete Dye. Each picturesque layout takes full advantage of the location’s vast, rugged topography, lush terrain, and majestic sweeping vistas with world-class shot values. Mystic Rock played host to the PGA Tour’s 84 Lumber Classic from 2003 to 2006, while Shepherd’s Rock opened in 2017, presenting great shot values and an uninhibited connection to the spectacular beauty of the Laurel Highlands.

Both courses demonstrate Dye’s daring brilliance and his ability to make golfers think and are the ideal location for a golf vacation, group golf trip, or large group outing. Surrounded by world-class golf and endless natural vistas, visitors discover a golfing escape like no other.

After playing a round of golf with 16 other ladies and receiving lots of compliments, I feel the new shoes have changed my game and look. I play three to four times a week and have worn them every day since they arrived and they give me great stability, support and are so comfortable and let’s face it, so stylish that I was able to wear them from the course to the gym. Celebrated for its exceptional luxury in Pennsylvania’s picturesque Laurel Highlands, the stunning and expansive Nemacolin resort invites guests into the wholly reimagined hotel, The Chateau, known for its Ritz Parisinspired design, debuted this past summer 2024, alongside new property revitalizations — Nightcap, PJ’s Ice Cream Parlor, Art Studios, and Kids Club.

“As we grow and expand Nemacolin, we are consistently inspired to elevate our accommodations and guest offerings,” said Owner & CEO Maggie Hardy. “Our commitment to our guests and members is unwavering and this is best exhibited through the constant reimagination of the property. The Chateau was our second accommodation and is a known favorite among Nemacolin patrons and at the heart of all who experience it. For us to provide the unparalleled and luxurious service we are known for, it was imperative we reimagine the hotel’s interiors to reflect modern finishes that convey the real-life magic and whimsy we are known for.”

A golf destination that simply defies comparison, Nemacolin is home to two acclaimed Pete Dye-designed golf courses and The Nemacolin Golf Academy, a

lavish, tech-forward game improvement paradise. With newly reimagined amenities, accommodations, experiences and venues all around, there’s never been a better time to this leisure wonderland tucked elegantly into the Allegheny Mountains.

To continue offering exceptional luxury hospitality to guests and members alike, the Hardy family assembled a talented team of designers, builders, and visionaries, including 84 Lumber; Martik Brothers, Inc.; Moncur Design Associates, Inc.; Gensler; and King & Partners, to bring these revitalizations to life. These sensational updates will be unveiled throughout the summer of 2024, in true Nemacolin fashion.

Highlights of Nemacolin’s recent reimagination include:

THE CHATEAU

Guests arrive at The Chateau through a grandiose porte cochere where Nemacolin’s first-class, white-glove service welcomes them. Luggage is promptly transported to their accommodations as they enter the breathtaking lobby and are greeted by the magical elegance of a roaring fireplace adorned with Macchia Oro polished marble. Transcending guests back in time to 18th-century France, the reimagined space embodies historic garden romance, extraordinary architecture, and opulence.

Glamorous materials from glamourous crystals, veined marbles, and textural velvet fabrics are augmented by floral motifs, intricate detailing, and twinkling lighting throughout the lobby.

Following a seamless arrival, guests will discover their redesigned guest room or suite features stunning pastels, gorgeous draperies, and even more luxurious accommodations than before. The hotel’s 124 rooms include new wall, floor, and window coverings; bathrooms with luxurious soaking tubs and elevated fixtures; and butler service with each reservation. Keeping in The Chateau’s original style, the rooms continue to feature exquisite marble accents and glittering chandeliers.

For guests seeking a stay enveloped in further heightened luxury, the opulent fifth floor will fulfill all their desires with exclusive access to The Chateau Club Floor which hosts 17 rooms including the 2,200-squarefoot Presidential Suite. This unparalleled two-bedroom suite with a palatial private patio, boasts an extravagant and luxurious design scheme. The adjacent Club Lounge not only stands out as a unique feature of the hotel but also acts as a lavish extension of the guest tower. Adorned with hues of soft taupe, pale robin’s egg blue, strong golds, warm browns, and fresh whites, the color palette expands on guest experiences. Central seating and display tables are crowned by a trio of glimmering chandeliers and a uniquely treated coffered ceiling. The private lounge will offer guests morning breakfast, light bites, specialty teas, and evening cocktails. Exclusively available to guests with rooms on the fifth floor, The Chateau Club Floor is an elevated offering complete with a private patio to relax under the expansive Laurel Highlands’ sky.

The Chateau offers luxurious libations as the perfect complement to its lavish accommodations at the wholly reimagined Lobby Bar in the space of the former tea room. This picturesque room is bathed in natural light, illuminating the brass inlay and marble accent floor which frames the

sensational scalloped bar. The soft pale, barely blue tone that adorns the room’s paneling is the perfect extension of the lobby while creating a unique identity encouraging guests to enjoy their time within. Crystal chandeliers twinkle against the opalescent textured ceiling, while luxurious brass metals add to the interior’s character. Accents of Quartzite Esmeralda stone bring the room to life and create a beautiful juxtaposition with the scalloped brass bar and adornments, all creating a flawless atmosphere to sip one of the Lobby Bar’s signature cocktails within.

For those seeking a traditional afternoon tea service, guests are invited to discover The Bleu Room where specialty teas served in hand-painted porcelain teapots are offered several days each week. The time-honored ritual will take place in the splendid room of only blue hues. Seated on ottomans and lounge chairs enveloped in custom brocade fabric, guests will journey through the senses as they sample unique tea blends and light bites. Imparting a distinguished ambiance and heightened indulgence, Afternoon Tea in The Bleu Room is a delectable experience.

NIGHTCAP

At Nightcap, everything is a celebration, and every individual is the guest of honor. A new destination venue for craft cocktails and cabaret entertainment beckons guests with its gleaming entrance and interiors inspired by vintage glamour. Adjacent to the entrance lies a veined marble bar, inviting patrons to find comfort in a mahogany velvet chair with a crisp cocktail in hand.

The main event, Nightcap’s cabaret and dining room, boasts comfort in booths of velvet jacquard upholstery which are mirrored to provide an immersive viewing

experience. The gilded backdrop draws all patron’s attention forward to take in the memorable performance of the evening. Nightcap also offers a quiet sanctuary within the Salon, a room enveloped in rich velvet upholstery, adorned with brass accents and animal motifs, offering groups a space to enjoy the music as a standalone performance. For a more intimate space to convene outside the main venue, the Smoking Lounge invites guests to converse surrounded by booths of rich velvet and hues of dark, deep pink with gold accents woven throughout. Violet Mystique Chandelier, a striking, gravity-defying encounter with color, light, and form designed by famed glass artist Dale Chihuly, is the centerpiece of the lounge. Twirling down spirals of handcrafted glass orbs and tendrils, the chandelier is a conversation between the artwork and the room itself. Color, lighting, translucency, scale, and form all play a pivotal role in this stunning centerpiece.

Nightcap raised its curtain over the Memorial Day weekend and offers standout jazz and cabaret performances several evenings each week throughout the summer. Luxurious libations and masterfully made mocktails are bountiful as guests are invited to revel in an evening of dazzling dance and decorum.

PJ’S ICE CREAM PARLOR

A whimsical, yet architectural experience lies in store for guests entering PJ’s Ice Cream Parlor. A series of colorful and inviting spaces, the iconic PJ’s Ice Cream Parlor takes an updated approach to the design of retro 1950s sweet spots. Baby blue hues accented with mosaic tile and colorful murals tie the modern, playful space together.

Home to famed Pittsburgh creamery, Millie’s Ice Cream, the ice cream parlor will offer delectable flavors and special treats such as supreme sundaes and magical milkshakes.

ART STUDIOS

Guests are invited into the redesigned art studio through pastel arches and eyecatching lighting. Marble sconces and a classic car sculpture marry the modern aesthetic and vintage allusions. Artworks, ceramics, and crafts are on display in this working studio where bright light highlights the creations and displays. Cape Kidnappers to Host Weekend with Tom Doak in 2025

Rosewood Cape Kidnappers, home to one celebrated Tom Doak creation and another that might have been, will host a special weekend event in 2025, where the American course architect himself will lead interactive course tours, play, dine and generally hobnob alongside fellow design aficionados high above sub-tropical waters of Hawke’s Bay.

Packages for this one-of-a-kind “Weekend with Tom” are now available. However, access to this “limited field event” will be granted on a first come/first served basis, according to Ray Geffre, director of golf at Cape Kidnappers GC. Click here for further details.

Cape Kidnappers GC is located on the southeast coast of New Zealand’s North Island, a region best known for its wineries, food scene and Art Deco architecture, especially in the nearby city of Napier. Flight time from Auckland: 45 minutes.

Set high atop the dramatic landforms and rugged cliffs of its eponymous peninsula, Doak’s 2004 design here — his first in New Zealand — was just ranked #15 among all courses located outside the U.S. In a country that invented the luxury lodge experience, Rosewood Cape Kidnappers created and continues to maintain this rarefied domestic standard, along with sister properties also managed by Rosewood at Kauri Cliffs in Northland, and The Matakauri near Queenstown.

“It’s the nicest lodge in the country,” Doak has said of Rosewood Cape Kidnappers. “Maybe on Earth.”

Developed by American financier Julian Robertson and still owned by the Robertson Family, this extraordinary property remains a massive, working cattle and sheep farm.

It’s also home to Cape Sanctuary, the largest privately funded wildlife restoration project in New Zealand. Yet, according to Doak, this peninsula is also home to “the project I most regret not having gotten the chance to design.”

“The very first time I went to Cape Kidnappers was the end of 2001, and I was late,” the architect recalls. “They picked me up in a helicopter and landed me on the point down below. At that time, Julian wanted to build his lodge down there and, in my opinion — then and now — that would have been a superb place to build a golf course. It was flat enough, to go with plenty of acreage. From the moment the helicopter touched down, I was like, ‘Why wouldn’t we build it down here in this valley?’

“It didn’t take long for Julian to make himself clear: The clifftops were his first choice and it’s hard to argue. His vision for golf on those cliffs was inspired. It’s a setting like no other. But I thought then — and I still think — a very good golf course could have gone down there in the valley.”

Across this special weekend, Doak will lead course tours and discussion of the perennial world top 100 course he designed up above, at cliffside. “There is nothing quite like it in golf; it just sits so high above the water,” Doak explains. “This is a course fairly ranked among the top 50 in the world, but I’ve found people have difficulty classifying Cape Kidnappers in their own minds — because it’s so different and distinct from anything else.”

Guests in 2025 will also be treated to at least one intimate tour of The Farm, the 18 holes Doak routed next door, didn’t build, but has never forgotten.

“We would take picnic lunches down there when Cape Kidnappers GC was being built,” he recalls. “I think it was our second trip when we gave Julian and his wife Josie a tour of the place. We had spent a few days on site just sticking flags in the ground — to show what the golf course could be. I think I undersold it back then. Julian’s focus was always on building a top 100 golf course, whereas, at The Farm, Bruce [Hepner] and I were thinking more about a course with sheep and cows all over it. Which is what they use the land for now, of course. That’s what so many ‘country courses’ do, all over New Zealand.

“I don’t honestly remember when Bruce and I went back and tried to actually route something down there,” Doak continues, referring to his former associate. “It may have been 2008. We had played around with maps from the start, but that was definitely our impetus — to get Julian more interested in a second course down below.”

The architect returned to New Zealand in 2013, to design and build Tara Iti Golf Club. This private, seaside club debuted in 2015, but its principals had also acquired an adjacent parcel that stretched some 10 kilometers down the beach, north of Auckland. The South Course at Te Arai Links opened for play there in late 2022. The Doak-designed North Course debuted a year later.

Early in the 21st century, Doak’s idea of building a second course at Cape Kidnappers proved a bit fanciful. Today, however, New Zealand is arguably the most desirable luxury golf destination on earth — a reality he helped create. What’s more, pushing the limits of middle age, he is more focused on the dream projects that truly matter. To him.

“I’ve not discussed it with anyone there at Cape, not formally. But maybe the Robertsons would think differently about The Farm course today — because of what’s been happening up at Te Arai. I don’t lie awake at night thinking about it, but I can tell you we’d jump at the chance to design and build a course down there. I don’t know that there is the will to do it, today, but maybe what’s happening at Te Arai has upped the ante some.

“I’ve been spending so much time in New Zealand of late. It’s hard not to think about The Farm. One thing I want to do some day is go back and build it.”

God’s Love We Deliver Serves Up Spectacular Second Annual Golf Event

Stars from all arenas converged upon historic Westchester Country Club in Rye, New York in early August to support what has become inarguably one of New York’s most worthy charitable organizations. The all-day affair included a golf tournament, tennis competition, live auction, dinner, and awards ceremony. In total, over $370,000 was raised.

Both Westchester Country Club’s West and South courses were filled with supporters, sponsors, and friends of God’s Love We Deliver. The featured group included the PGA Tour’s Beau Hossler, former New York Giants wide receiver and Super Bowl champion Victor Cruz, model Victoria Brito, and veteran actor Richard Kind. The celebrities presented awards to winners from the golf and tennis

competitions during the awards ceremony.

The evening’s reception was co-hosted by Chairman and CEO of Capri Holdings Limited, John Idol, God’s Love We Deliver Board Member, Roberta Graves, and Fox 5 Good Day New York Anchor and Fox NFL Sunday host Curt Menefee.

Attendees learned more about God’s Love’s work, which includes cooking and delivering medically tailored free meals to those in need of individualized nutrition. Recipients of God’s Love’s generosity are those who are too sick to shop or cook for themselves as well as their families and caregivers.

“We are thrilled to host our second annual God’s Love Open with the great support of so many friends: Roberta Graves, Chef Michael Anthony, John Idol,

Jim Halpin, James Palazza, and all of our sponsors and guests,” said God’s Love President and CEO David Ludwigson. “We will deliver our 40 millionth free meal this year, and with meal numbers up 30 percent from last year, you and your support are more critical to our work than ever before. An event like GLO raies both awareness and funds for us, all in the fun of a round of golf or a tennis match.”

In 2023, God’s Love delivered a record 4.3 million free meals to almost 16,000 clients living with an illness, as well as those close to them. The New York-based nonprofit is on pace to eclipse 5 million meals in 2024 thanks to unwavering support from so many including God’s Love Open event presenters Goldman Sachs, Michael Kors, Dena and Sam Lombardo, and Jens Audenaert and Amol Shah.

Additional sponsors such as Delta Air Lines, Gramercy Tavern, Morgan Stanley, PEPE Auto Group, McKissack & McKissack, the New York Post, Tito’s Handmade Vodka, and Malbon Golf helped deliver a spectacular day at Westchester CC, a venue that stands among the most decorated among the impressive list of New York area clubs. Westchester hosted an annual PGA Tour event for over 40 years. The Westchester Classic, later named the Buick Classic and then Barclays Classic,

was played on the Walter Travis-designed West Course from 1967 through 2007. Past champions include Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Johnny Miller, Padraig Harrington, Vijay Singh, Sergio Garcia, Ernie Els, Seve Ballesteros, and Ray Floyd. Fred Couples won the Senior Players Championship at Westchester in 2011. The club also hosted the 2015 Women’s PGA Championship won by Inbee Park and two U.S. Women’s Amateurs, the last in 2021.

The God’s Love Open is one of many annual signature events the nonprofit stages. Others include the Golden Heart Awards, which this year will honor Sarah Jessica Parker with the Michael Kors Award for Outstanding Philanthropy and Megan Thee Stallion with the genLOVE Award for Outstanding Philanthropy,

and the Love Rocks NYC concert, which in the past has featured an insane list of celebrity hosts and performers including Conan O’Brien, Tracy Morgan, Dave Grohl, James Taylor, Pat Benatar, Sheryl Crow, Keith Richards, Whoopi Goldberg, Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, Bruce Willis, Martin Short, Kevin Bacon, Jon Bon Jovi, Tina Fey, Dave Matthews, and Jackson Browne. The 2024 event held back in March raised $3.8 million.

God’s Love’s history dates all the way back to 1985 when a hospice worker named Ganga Stone visited Richard Sale, an AIDS patient who was too sick to cook his own meals. Stone went to work, preparing and delivering meals to Sale. A minister stopped Stone one day during a meal delivery, and after hearing about her work, told her, “...

you’re not just delivering food … you’re delivering God’s love.”

Thanks to over 23,000 volunteers and a homebase in the Soho neighborhood of lower Manhattan, God’s Love delivers more than 16,000 meals each weekday to those living with debilitating diseases like cancer, Alzheimer’s, and MS in the five New York City boroughs as well as Hudson County, New Jersey and Westchester, Suffolk, and Nassau Counties. God’s Love has never turned anyone in need away for any reason. TSG

The

“All in the

Family” Golf Destination

One of the largest family-owned golf resorts in the country has been building a legacy for more than 60 years

A wildly popular Southwestern Michigan golf destination came about because of one man’s vision. A superintendent at nearby Gull Lake Country Club in Richland, Michigan, for 25 years, Darl Scott decided to tap into his entrepreneurial spirit in the early 1960s. He and his wife, who already owned and operated a nearby motel, set out to build the Gull Lake View West golf course in 1962 on adjacent land. Little did the couple know that the small motel and golf course business would lead the couple to become pioneers in destination golf.

Today, this stay-and-play lake country golf destination is one of the largest family-owned golf resorts in the country. One that offers an affordable value proposition not commonly found with larger multi-course golf resorts. Gull Lake View’s six championship courses offer a special experience for golfers, all while not breaking the bank. Imagine, for the price of one round at Pebble Beach or Bandon Dunes, golfers could experience a three-day, two-night golf package and

play up to three or four rounds of golf.

The original Gull Lake View West is depicted by fields, ravines, hills, woods, ponds, and domed greens. In the early 1970s, the couple sold the motel and built Gull Lake View East –which features hilly scenic terrain, lots of unique water hazards, and demands good shot placement. Alongside the East course, Darl built villa-style condos for golf groups to stay in, which was a new experience at the time.

During the late 1980s and 1990s golf course boom, the Scotts’ son Charlie, who had built golf courses for Wadsworth Construction for seven years before coming home to build the East course, designed and built Stonehedge South nearby in 1988. The golf course is set on dramatic, rolling wooded countryside reminiscent of the Carolinas. Then, in 1995, Charlie and his son Jon built Stonehedge North, which showcases dramatic elevation changes and plays roughly five shots easier than the South. At the same time, the family bought

and refurbished nearby Bedford Valley Country Club, a local course that had hosted multiple Michigan Opens but fell into disrepair.

“Darl (who passed away in 1999) liked to buy land, and in that spirit, Jon and I looked at the land next to the South course, and it had an Irish-Scottish feel to it with a lot of movement,” recalls Bill Johnson, CEO of Gull Lake View who was the company’s vice president back then. “And that’s how Stoatin Brae came about, which opened in 2017. We were playing at Pacific Dunes at Bandon Dunes and talked about getting in touch with architect Tom Doak. Within a

couple of days, he was here to look at the plans with us.”

Due to a project conflict, Doak handed the Stoatin Brae job to his Renaissance Golf A-Team of designers Eric Iverson, Brian Schneider, Don Placek, and Brian Slawnik. They were responsible for the layout and critical shaping, bringing the Scottish influences alive. They created a minimalist classic links style with architectural elements from golf’s golden design era of the 1920s and 1930s to create a stunning and memorable golf experience.

Stoatin Brae is only the second course of the six that is not designed by the talented family with landscape architecture backgrounds. And now, the course is ranked in the state’s top 5. Unlike anything else in Michigan, it’s located on one of the highest points in Kalamazoo County and commands sweeping panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. It’s a special course with a dramatic design that inspires golfers to play their best.

“Most of our guests will spend a whole day at Stonehedge during one of their days visiting, playing the North and South,” says Johnson. “They like to play the East and West together, as well. And then Stoatin

Brae, which we’ve done a lot of work on to make it more playable. It’s mature now and it’s beautiful. The views are great, and it’s totally different than any of the other golf courses. And Bedford Valley gives you that old country club feel. And it’s a big golf course that we can stretch to way over 7,000 yards if need be. These six courses have withstood the test of time. They’re just good-quality golf courses. And everybody knows when they come here, they’re gonna get great conditions.”

“We pride ourselves on country club conditions,” continues Johnson. “We’re all about golf, and we have the amenities, restaurants, snack bars, and condos that people love. We’re located right in the middle of Detroit and Chicago, an easy drive from both or from up north and Wisconsin. It’s really grown in popularity.”

For people in the Detroit-to-Chicago corridor, it’s a much shorter drive than going to Northern Michigan, and the golf quality is equally good. What’s really special about all six courses is that they’re playable for all skill levels. Golf has become more about fun, relaxation, and hanging out with friends. That’s what Gull Lake View emanates. You don’t have to be a great player to enjoy your stay.

As popular as Gull Lake View has

become—particularly since the pandemic— ownership is reinvesting roughly $2 million per year into improving the course conditions, irrigation, accommodations, and infrastructure in an effort to keep everything top-notch. They really care about the overall experience. Golfers will likely see that spill over into more rooms available in the near future, as well.

“We’re definitely at lodging capacity a lot,” says Johnson. “In fact, we work with a lot of host hotels, the biggest one being the Radisson in Kalamazoo, that we fill up for weekends because we’re just full. So, by having the six courses, we can spread guests around. As for more golf courses, you never know. I wouldn’t rule that out. We’re always looking at land and continuing Darl Scott’s spirit,” says Johnson.

Going on the fourth generation of ownership since the early 1960s, this simple yet charming golf resort is a fun and rewarding experience for everyday golfers. It is the ultimate destination where buddies can have the same experience and camaraderie without breaking the bank or traveling great distances to high-end or oceanfront destinations that often receive all the attention. Indoor Golf is Surging at an All-Time High, But What’s Next?

Industry Expert Rene Delgado Explains How The Home Simulator Dream Is More Accessible, And Customizable, Than Ever

The indoor golf space is as competitive as it’s ever been while many of the biggest companies in the game have also been recipients of record growth over the past fourplus years. It’s all a good problem to have for those with skin in the indoor game.

Rene Delgado, Founder and CEO of The Indoor Golf Shop, the leading online retailer, distributor and manufacturer of indoor golf products, never dreamed his company would see so much growth so quickly when he launched the Texas-based business back in 2017. Today TIGS resides in 50,000 square feet of space north of Dallas with a luxury showroom dubbed “The Cabin” opening later this summer.

“Since COVID, there’s been this huge influx of interest in all things golf,” Delgado said. “Indoor golf in particular really saw hockey-stick growth during COVID and shortly thereafter. We’re starting to see some normalization this year. We’re still seeing decent growth but at a tamer level than before.

“The industry has evolved a lot since 2020. There used to be a handful of players that had golf simulator technology, launch monitor technology, and we’re seeing so many new entrants into the space. In terms of options, there are tons and tons of options for golfers – economical, mid-range and in the high-end luxury space.”

TECHNOLOGY HAS OPENED THE FLOODGATES

One of the reasons for such popularity is because of evolving technology. When that happens, Delgado said, affordability starts to become more reasonable and it’s not particularly necessary to purchase a simulator for a home or business that tops $20,000. In some cases, consumers can now buy a basic setup with a launch monitor, mat and net for under $1,000 and scale up their simulator buildouts in seemingly endless ways. Technology breeds accessibility.

“We’re starting to see a change in consumer behavior for the directto-consumer market,” Delgado said. “Information is now more readily available. Consumers are much more savvy and very value-driven. The luxury market remains strong and agnostic toward cost. But the foundation, the mid-market, they’re getting much more savvy as consumers.”

MEETING MARKET DEMAND WITH CREATIVE SOLUTIONS

Delgado and his team problem-solved a huge issue during the pandemic, which ultimately opened more revenue streams.

Because of global supply chain issues a few years ago, his company left no stone unturned in finding a way to better control their own destiny and better support their customers.

The solution? The Indoor Golf Shop doubled down on manufacturing and figured out a way to mass produce products critical to quality sim buildout.

“We looked at everything,” Delgado said. “We decided to become a reliable manufacturer of soft goods – premium impact screens, golf mats, simulator flooring, and more.”

“We manufacture our own enclosures and structures for both residential and commercial installations. It’s lowered our cost basis, but it’s also allowed us to rapidly react to what consumers are looking for.”

DEMYSTIFYING THE BUYING AND NSTALLATION PROCESS

With supply no longer an issue, TIGS was then able to focus completely on the consumer. When a customer approaches the company, the first thing TIGS asks is about specific goals. In order to steer them in the proper direction they need to know if the system will be for game improvement,

training, entertainment or a combination of both. Will it be for both right-handed and left-handed golfers? What is the overall objective?

“It’s all about understanding the motivation behind a customer’s want of a simulator,” Delgado said. “Then, based on that and their situation, we can educate them based on the best options.”

There is something for everyone, no matter the purpose.

“You have entry-level, and those types of consumers usually want something basic, which means a piece of turf, a hitting net and an entry-level launch monitor, something they can hook up their iPad to and see their data displayed but not have to spend thousands of dollars.

“Then you have those who want fullblown simulation where they’re hitting the ball into the screen in front of them. There are two kinds of those customers; There are DIY type individuals who want to buy the components from you and build out their own space. Then there are people like me that want everything curated, a sim-in-a-box type customer. Historically that’s been our biggest line. We provide them with the best technology, hitting mats, screens, turf, put it all on a palette, and ship it to their doorstep.

“Then there is the high-end custom design and build demographic. These customers go through a completely different buying process that is much more involved. We take them through an elaborate design phase, oftentimes working hand in hand with their own designers and architects. Customers have an opportunity to review 2D/3D drawings showing them exactly what their space will look like ahead of time. We then move into the production phase where the team manufactures the custom components. The last step is the installation – where we fly out a team of our certified golf sim installers to perform the install for the customer.”

While all three businesses have been prosperous for Delgado, they each have been more popular at different times. Until recently, the sim-in-a-box concept was the biggest seller. This year, they’re selling standalone components at a much faster rate than all-inclusive components.

“Some can feel overwhelmed by the process because there’s so much out there,” Delgado said. “Before there used to only be a couple of options. Now you can get analysis paralysis. That’s where we come in and provide the value add and educating and steering customers into the right options for them.”

WHAT’S NEXT?

The evolution of indoor golf simulation has come so far so quickly, that it’s difficult to predict where it will be in the near future. Even within a year. Artificial intelligence is slowly making its way into the space, just as it is with everything else in the world. Multisport technology is getting better, where players can play baseball, hockey, soccer or other sports on the same simulator. Things are becoming commonplace now that were unimaginable just a couple years ago. The trend will continue.

It’s likely that there will be other changes too, although it’ll be more on the business side.

“I think the industry in general will see some consolidation in the space; some players exiting, others being acquired,” Delgado said. “By early next year, the players and manufacturers will look different than they do today. But for consumers it’s only going to continue to get better.

“The golf league next year [TGL], I’m really excited about that. That’s going to expose a ton of people to the game who have not otherwise been exposed to it. And the technology is going to continue to improve. May not seem like it, but it absolutely will.”

The Rising Costs of Daily Fee and Resort Golf Courses in 2024 The Golf Boom or Doom For The Average Golfer

Plunking down three hundred, four hundred or above five hundred anymore for a round of golf seems to be the norm anymore, not to mention adding in food and drinks for the day. Is golf pricing out the average golfer or just catering to the expendable golfer anymore?

Golf has always been seen as a sport associated with luxury and exclusivity, but in 2024, the cost of playing at many high-end daily fee and resort courses has reached unprecedented levels. Over the last few decades, the commercialization of golf, coupled with the surge in tourism-driven economies, has significantly impacted the accessibility of these courses. Understanding how these changes came about involves examining the historical evolution of golf pricing, the role of the tourism industry, and the socio-economic factors contributing to the sport’s rising costs today.

The concept of daily fee courses first gained traction in the mid-20th century,

as more golfers, particularly in the United States, sought access to quality courses without needing private club memberships. These courses were designed to offer a premium golf experience at a fee per round, often reflecting the local economy and the course’s condition. For years, they were seen as affordable alternatives to private country clubs, offering mid-range to premium golf experiences without long-term commitments.

Meanwhile, resort courses—typically associated with luxury hotels and destinations—have historically catered to affluent tourists, blending the allure of exclusive locations with top-tier golf amenities. Until the 1990s, both daily fee and resort courses maintained relatively stable pricing models, even as tourism expanded globally. At the time, even premier courses like Pebble Beach or Pinehurst remained accessible to a broader range of golfers.

However, by the early 2000s, the growing popularity of golf tourism, particularly in exotic locales such as Hawaii, the Caribbean, and parts of Asia, pushed demand for resort golf to new heights. Coupled with the rise of golf as a televised sport and the development of signature courses by famous players like Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, and later Tiger Woods, the sport’s exclusivity and association with wealth grew.

In the early 21st century, golf resorts began to capitalize on the boom in luxury travel and real estate development. High-end residential communities started forming around golf courses, especially in areas like Florida, Arizona, and California, turning many courses into multi-purpose luxury destinations. With the development of real estate came the justification for higher fees. Developers and course owners began charging premium prices to offset their costs, market to wealthy travelers, and appeal to affluent residents.

GOLF FEES

In destinations like Scotland and Ireland, known for their historic courses, the tourism industry expanded aggressively. Historic links courses, revered as pilgrimages for serious golfers, began commanding higher and higher fees as international travel grew. By the 2010s, playing on iconic courses such as St. Andrews or Royal Portrush could set a golfer back hundreds of dollars per round. Many travelers saw these fees as a once-in-alifetime experience, and the market adjusted accordingly.

As we move into 2024, the costs associated with high-end daily fee and resort golf courses have reached new levels. For example, courses like Pebble Beach now charge upwards of $600 for a round of golf, while exclusive resorts in the Caribbean or Mexico often feature green fees exceeding $500. This shift can be attributed to several factors, including inflation, the rising costs of course maintenance, and increased demand from affluent global tourists.

Moreover, the trend of “destination golf” has evolved. Golfers are willing to travel long distances and pay high fees for a unique, prestigious experience. This demand has only grown post-pandemic, as more people seek outdoor recreational activities that align with luxury travel. Consequently, resorts and high-end daily fee courses are responding by setting higher fees to match the demand and the growing cost of maintaining pristine, world-class facilities.

In many ways, the pricing trend mirrors the general growth in luxury tourism, where experiences like high-end cruises, safaris, or five-star hotels have steadily increased in cost. Similarly, golf courses are marketed not just as places to play but as part of an elite, aspirational lifestyle. Many golfers view the steep fees as part of the broader package, offering not only top-tier courses but also luxurious accommodations, fine dining, and resort amenities.

For many avid golfers, particularly those outside the wealthy elite, these trends raise concerns about accessibility. Daily fee courses that were once affordable alternatives to private clubs now charge amounts that rival private memberships. For the everyday golfer, it’s becoming harder to justify paying $300 or more for a single round.

As costs continue to rise in 2024, there is a growing conversation within the golf community about the sport’s sustainability and inclusivity. While high-end resort courses are booming, more accessible public courses are seeing fewer rounds played, leading to closures in some areas. This growing divide between luxury and accessible golf may shape the sport’s future, determining who gets to play and where.

Ultimately, golf in 2024 reflects broader societal trends where experiences associated with wealth and luxury continue to rise in cost, leaving many to wonder if the sport is on the verge of pricing out the everyday enthusiast. TSG

A Magma Saga iceland

After years of fantasizing, we signed up for the Arctic Open in Iceland. Then came news of volcanic eruptions and fissures. We watched daily updates as Grindavik near the airport was evacuated and the famous Blue Lagoon closed. Would the airport close too, as in 2010? Would we make it? Yes, and thanks to Arni Hallgrimsson with Golf Expeditions Iceland, it was a dream vacation experiencing a bit of everything in the Land of Fire and Ice.

REYKJAVIK

Arni collected us at the airport wearing shorts on a sunny day. He pointed out hot spots in the capital of Reykjavik to visit at leisure and warned us not to nap for best adaptation to the time difference after the redeye flight.

We heeded his advice and walked to the harbor filled with whale watching expeditions and The Royalty of Denmark’s

grand ship, a swordsman en garde. After fish and chips, we climbed up the hill to the Hallgrímskirkja Church where the largest organ bellowed sweet music. Streets are lined with restaurants and shops for woolen goods in high demand year-round. Pub patios along a park were filled with Euro soccer fans watching sports screens, elated with the sunshine. And that was our last warm day in Iceland.

GOLF

Arni let us choose between first playing Keiler, often rated as Iceland’s number one course, or Grindavik. The evacuated Grindavik? Yes, the course just reopened 13 holes. Sounds like an adventure, and it was. Arni drove past manned barricades with permission, and at one point the roadside was smoking like a chimney from the lava flow beneath. The ghost town looked eerie. Were we stupid?

GM, Helgi Dan Steinsson shared that it is a bit tough right now given the bad publicity of eruptions and government warnings that the town is unstable. Although Iceland is buying citizens’ homes, so they won’t return unsafely, positive thermal scans of the course, allowed Helgi to reopen. He asked, “How many employees do you think we have?” Only himself and a fine job he does in the shop and on the tractor.

The layout is fantastic with sea views and smoking volcanoes which were flaming like a dragon ten days before. Golfers must walk cautiously around open fissures which have precluded the last five holes from yet opening. As hot as it sounds, we donned every layer to keep warm.

Jack Nicklaus noted there is more golf played in Iceland than most places in the world because they play 24 hours a day in the summertime. Over 70 courses avail, ten truly special, like Westman Island Golf Club, reached by a 45-minute ferry ride. The clubhouse is new, and views are astounding with several seaside holes revealing elephant shapes in tall cliff rocks down to the water. Lucky lava rock shots may prevent lost balls.

Westman Island boasts the most puffins (fat little birds with round orange beaks) on the planet. The Volcano Open for amateurs is hosted here in July by Karl Haraldsson with a shotgun format followed by a concert party with the midnight sun.

But we signed up for the Arctic Open at Akuryeri in June, a four-hour drive to the north with hypnotic scenery the entire journey. Ice capped mountains spill waterfalls down to rivers teeming with salmon in the green valleys where sheep and Icelandic horses frolic and graze.

The Arctic Open celebrates summer solstice and promo photos showed golfers in shorts like Arni at the airport but NOT this year. The practice round was so cold and rainy that we played only seven holes and drove by the rest to see the configuration, still in awe of the incredible scenery with purple lupines contrasting the distant snowcapped mountains. It was a phenomenal event, and we did marvel at the Midnight sun turning, not setting around the landscape.

BEYOND

Beyond golf, Iceland adventures are unlike any other place from magnificent falls, glaciers, ice caves and summer snowmobiling to hot geysers and geothermal lagoon spas.

Visit and hike where the Viking chieftains assembled for the world’s first parliament. Their naming tradition is still honored by Icelanders. Surnames for all children begin with the father’s first name followed by son or dóttir if male or female, no confusion here. So Arni’s dad’s first name is Hallgrim making him Arni Hallgrimsson. If Arni has a daughter, he might name her Kristin Arnisdóttir which would not change with her matrimony. All the sons and dóttirs of Iceland are friendly when engaged and most speak English which is a good thing given the difficulty in pronouncing Icelandic, except for “tak” which is thank you. We are thankful for our magma saga. TSG

Harbor Shores Named 2024 Michigan Golf Course of the Year

The Jack Nicklaus Signature design course at Harbor Shores Resort has been named the 2024 Michigan Golf Course of the Year by the Michigan Golf Course Association (MGCA).

“I think this is one of the biggest honors a golf facility can receive in the state of Michigan,” said Josh Doxtator, PGA General Manager at the resort. “Harbor Shores has been the catalyst for the community and honors like this continue to prove that point and tell our story.”

Jada Paisley, executive director of the MGCA, said the association is thrilled to announce Harbor Shores as the course of the year. The award honors a member course that meets four criteria: Unique characteristics of the course; exceptional quality of ownership and management; outstanding contribution to its community; and significant contribution to the game.

“Harbor Shores embodies all of the characteristics of the award,” Paisley said. “The golf course, through its development on reclaimed land, involvement with the PGA Tour Champions, the onsite First Tee program and more has fostered a vibrant community hub where people can come together for golfing, socializing and events while supporting charitable causes that benefit the broader community.”

Harbor Shores has served as home to the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship every other year starting in 2012 and running through its final year this past May, and in August it hosted the 2024 Michigan PGA Professional Championship.

Doxtator said the resort is more than just a host of championships. “Harbor Shores has been committed to the community since 2010 and before when the vision first started, and it has been served with a great golf course, the revitalized part of the community, been a big part of Whirlpool’s charitable efforts, created a First Tee program that serves so many kids on-site, and more,” he said.

The award-winning Nicklaus course is part of a beach, golf and residential waterfront community, and the design features golf holes on four diverse terrains – parkland, sand dunes on the lake, woodlands and wetlands along the Paw Paw River and Ox Creek.

The development of Harbor Shores, which opened in 2010, made national news by reclaiming abandoned industrial and polluted land as part of a non-profit effort. It helped to revitalize the area and provide economic growth and continuing development. Harbor Shores is a not-forprofit facility, and a portion of fees collected help maintain the area’s trail systems and beach at adjacent Jean Klock Park.

The course was honored in several best new course rankings in 2010 and has been honored as environmental leaders by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America. In 2023 it was named to Golf Digest’s biennial list of America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses.

While golfers play, they are welcomed at the tees of each of the 18 holes by a sculpture/ dedicated display honoring each one of the major championships won by Nicklaus. The legendary golfer and designer also boosted the marketing of the course when he answered a challenge by fellow golf legend Johnny Miller and made a 100-foot putt on

the dramatically undulating No. 10 green during a grand opening round (Champions for Change event) that also included Tom Watson. Video of the putt remains popular on the internet.

Doxtator, who has been at the resort since 2019, said he believes Harbor Shores provides a premium experience when his team, including PGA Head Golf Professional Jackson Davison and Superintendent Matthew Volrath, executes the plan.

“We have built a staff that is dedicated and welcoming and always trying to make each golfer’s experience memorable,” he said. “The golf course does its part as the only Jack Nicklaus designed course with holes on the shores of Lake Michigan. We are 90 miles from Chicago. The Inn at Harbor Shores, the development of condominiums on site, being involved in the community are all part of it. It’s a place that we can talk about, but it must be experienced and then you realize it is a powerful example of the impact golf can have.”

King’s North at Myrtle Beach National Unveils Renovated Front Nine

King’s North at Myrtle Beach National, an Arnold Palmer design that has long been one of the Grand Strand’s most popular layouts, reopened October 3 following a comprehensive front nine renovation.

Founders Group International, Myrtle Beach National’s parent company, selected Brandon Johnson Golf Course Design to oversee the two-year, two-part renovation project, and the course closed on June 3 to begin work. Phase 2, which will focus on the back nine, will take place in the summer of 2025.

Johnson, who worked for Arnold Palmer Golf Design for 17 years, reimagined the opening nine at King’s North, expanding the greens to their original size and specifications and in some cases beyond. Johnson’s work on the putting surfaces dramatically increased the number of pinnable locations and enhanced the subtle contours on the interior of the greens and the surrounding fringe, adding to the creativity of the layout.

“I know (Mr. Palmer) spent time up here, and this was a property that he loved,” Johnson said. “It's been fun to come back and think about things that he might have wanted us to do, but also think about changes that now that I have my own company, I wanted to implement.

“This is a slightly new vision (for the course), but it is very respectful of his work and his intent out here. It's been a wonderful opportunity.”

Johnson installed new TifEagle bermudagrass greens, in addition to overhauling every bunker on the front nine and installing Capillary Concrete bunker liners. He also leaned into the rugged look King’s North has long enjoyed, expanding the waste bunkers and spotlighting the naturally sandy soil that have long defined the course’s visual aesthetic.

“King’s North looks great, and Brandon has brought additional creativity to a layout that has always been among the Myrtle Beach area’s most enjoyable to play,” said FGI President Steve Mays. “We are thrilled to welcome players back for the area’s peak fall season and look forward to showcasing a reimagined King’s North to golfers from across America.”

While every hole on the front nine enjoyed a significant facelift, here is a closer look at the work Johnson and his team did on several prominent holes.

• The changes on the par 4 second hole are striking, beginning with the waste bunker that bisects the fairway approximately 60 yards from the green. The bunker, which previously had a low profile,

is much more prominent and with the face raised will present a more formidable challenge.

The biggest changes on No. 2 are around the green and its surrounds. Mounds that were once covered in rough have been reconfigured and tightly mowed, allowing golfers the option to play off them to a reinvigorated putting surface that features several new pin locations and enhanced contouring.

• “The Gambler” is one of Myrtle Beach’s most recognizable holes, and the par 5 No. 6 enjoyed a significant makeover. The right side of the hole has been completely reimagined, beginning with the elimination of a cart path that was replaced by a new waste bunker that begins at the tee.

The new bunker redefines the hole from the tee, and Johnson reconfigured and recontoured all the fairway bunkers to enhance their visual interest and strategy. The hole’s famed, alternate island fairway, which players can attempt to hit off the tee to set up a much shorter approach, wasn’t changed in Phase One of the project, but the new green now features a backboard that could help push shots toward the hole.

• King’s North’s front nine par 3s are a delight and the eighth hole, which can require everything from a wedge to a long

iron based on the setup, highlights their appeal. The eighth green is the largest on the opening side and Johnson has added two memorable new pin locations.

When the flag is set in the back left bowl, No. 8 will demand power and precision, while the new location in the front left will require a much more delicate shot over water. In many ways, the eighth hole encapsulates the new variety Johnson is bringing to King’s North.

With the project at the halfway point, golfers will get to experience the best of the old and the new at King’s North.

“This is a unique opportunity in that we're at the midway point,” Johnson said. “A lot of times when you're doing a renovation, the golf course closes for X number of months or a year, and no one gets to see how things have changed. Now you have the opportunity of getting to see the new front nine and compare that with how the

original golf course looks and plays.”

King’s North was last renovated in 1996 when Palmer oversaw a complete redesign of what was previously called the North Course.

The layout shot to the top of the list of Myrtle Beach’s best designs and was ranked among America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses by Golf Digest.

The renovation of King’s North is the latest in a string of investments by FGI in its family of courses. In the summer of 2023, FGI commissioned a comprehensive greens, bunkers and clubhouse restoration project at Pawleys Plantation, highlighting the company’s commitment to providing the best golf vacation experience possible.

FGI owns 21 Myrtle Beach area courses

and has undertaken significant capital improvement projects on 12 of them in recent years, including Grande Dunes, Pine Lakes and TPC Myrtle Beach.

With additional capital improvement projects on the horizon, FGI is reinforcing its commitment to providing golfers with the best golf vacation experience possible.

USGA Announces Changes to U.S. Senior Open Qualifying Model, Beginning in 2025 TOURNAMENT NEWS

The United States Golf Association (USGA) today announced that the U.S. Senior Open Championship will move to a two-stage qualifying model and adopt modified exemption categories, beginning in 2025.

The U.S. Senior Open, which will be contested next year at The Broadmoor’s East Course, in Colorado Springs, Colo., will feature a qualifying framework that is similar to the U.S. Open with 32 local sites and 12 final sites. In 2024, there was one stage of qualifying with 33 sites in 24 U.S. states. The USGA accepted 3,019 entries, the third-highest total in championship history.

Additionally, the U.S. Senior Open’s qualifying model will feature a limited overall reduction in full exemptions along with the appropriate alignment of major championship exemptions. Local exemption criteria will recognize accomplishments at the senior amateur and professional level.

“Retaining the U.S. Senior Open’s openness while ensuring that high-caliber players are provided ample opportunity to

earn a spot in the field and that qualifying can be conducted at the highest level is paramount,” said Brent Paladino, USGA senior director, Championship Administration. “Our structure has evolved to ensure the long-term sustainability of qualifying without excessively burdening Allied Golf Associations (AGAs) and host clubs.”

Significant full exemption adjustments include a one-year exemption for PGA Tour Champions winners (based on timing of victory) instead of 2- or 3-year exemptions, while the Senior PGA, Senior Players and The Tradition champion will each receive a 5-year exemption.

The establishment of local exemptions will include, but not be limited to, past PGA Tour Champions winners, top finishers in the Charles Schwab Cup standings, top finishers in senior major championships, winners of state senior opens and state senior amateur championships and a World Amateur Golf Ranking®/WAGR® senior agefiltered category.

While maintaining the openness of the championship, benefits to the AGAs and local level, improved qualifying odds, an overall enhanced qualifying experience and a stronger championship field are the expected results of the two-stage model.

Newport (R.I.) Country Club is hosting the U.S. Senior Open Championship for the first time this week. The 44th edition of the championship is being played June 27-30, and will air on NBC, Golf Channel and Peacock. Newport, one of the USGA’s five founding members, was the host site for the first USGA championship in 1895. This week’s U.S. Senior Open will be the association’s 1,001st championship.
