THIS IS AUSTIN PEAY STATE UNIVERSITY
A
ustin Peay State University is a comprehensive, stateassisted university with a distinguished tradition in liberal and professional education. The institution is named in honor of Austin Peay, Tennessee’s governor from 1924 until 1927, the year APSU was founded. The university is located in Clarksville, Tenn., just 45 minutes northwest of Tennessee’s capital, Nashville, on Interstate 24. One of the South’s most historic cities, Clarksville also is Tennessee’s third-fastest growing city behind only Memphis and Nashville. Situated on gently rolling terrain near picturesque downtown Clarksville, Austin Peay’s main campus consists of 68 buildings on 169 acres. The classical Georgian architecture of the Austin Peay campus is combined with newer buildings. This blend provides a link with the past while reflecting the academic excellence and dignity of an institution of higher learning. The newest building additions to the main campus are the Foy Fitnees and Recreation Center, Sundquist Science Complex and the new Morgan University Center, each opening for use since 2001. The $11-million Foy Center, features a rock-climbing wall and 10,000 square feet of fitness space and other amenities for the student body. The Sundquist Complex is one of the South’s premier science education facilities and represents the largest capital appropriation ever in Tennessee for a single classroom building. The new Morgan University Center is located in the heart of the campus and features a cybercafe, meeting rooms, a food court, coffee shop, ballroom and lounges for Austin Peay students. Austin Peay’s campus has been the site of seven educational institutions since 1806. The campus was occupied by Southwestern for 50 years until 1925 when the school moved to Memphis. Austin Peay was founded two years later as a two-year normal school to train teachers for the region. Austin Peay has grown over the years to take its place among the finest mid-sized four-year universities in the nation. Austin Peay Normal School became a four-year college in 1941-42, and university status was conferred Sept. 1, 1967. Austin Peay State University currently enrolls more than 10,000 students from every region of Tennessee, most of the 50 states and several foreign countries. Austin Peay offers more than 50 majors in associate, bachelor’s, master’s and education specialist’s degrees with additional areas of concentration. Courses are offered in arts and sciences, business, education, engineering technology, nursing and human services. Graduate studies also are offered in several areas. In addition, numerous online courses are offered each semester. A state leader in public service, Austin Peay State University has more than 750 employees. Engaged in the most modern teaching techniques and research are nearly 280 full-time faculty members, 90 percent of whom hold the earned doctorate or appropriate terminal degrees in their disciplines.

GOVERNORS TENNIS FACILITIES The Governors Tennis Center has been a part of Austin Peay athletics and the Clarksville community for nearly two decades. When the idea was broached to build an indoor tennis center on the APSU campus, the advantages were obvious for APSU students, the Governors and Lady Govs tennis programs and the local tennis community. The indoor facility literally became a tennis “center” in northwest Tennessee. The site of Clarksville’s first indoor tennis center is located across the street from Governors Stadium and next to the stadium parking lot. It consists of four lighted courts. Dressing facilities for both men and women are provided. The University actively seeks memberships from families, individuals and corporations. Students do not have to pay a membership fee but are charged a reduced court-time fee. Combined with the recently renovated Governors Tennis Courts, Austin Peay possesses debatably the Ohio Valley Conference’s finest tennis facilities.
GOVERNORS TENNIS CENTER The Governors Tennis Center not only provides protection from the elements, but also allows for continous teaching and instruction by the Austin Peay coaching staff.
AUSTIN PEAY TENNIS COURTS The recently resurfaced Austin Peay tennis courts remains the finest outdoor tennis courts in the area. Consisting of eight lighted courts, the facility sits adjacent to the Foy Fitness and Recreation Center. The courts have new windscreens and bleacher seating, along with a practice wall.

MALIK TABET HEAD COACH 2nd Season Malik Tabet, the 2010 Ohio Valley Conference co-Coach of the Year, completed an impressive turnaround of Austin Peay State University’s tennis programs with the women’s team winning the 2010 OVC Tournament Championship. A year after a tournament title for the Lady Govs, Tabet led a Govs team with five sophomores and three freshmen to the OVC Championship match. The Govs would have an unprecedented three players - freshman Jasmin Ademovic, along with sophomores Sean Bailey and Henrique Norbiato - named firstteam All-OVC while Ademovic became Tabet’s second-straight OVC Freshman of the Year. During the Lady Govs 2010 title run under Tabet’s guidance, then-sophomore Vanja Tomic was named 2010 OVC Player of the Year and freshman Carolin Weikard being named 2010 OVC Freshman of the Year. Not only was it the first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance for the Lady Govs, they did it by winning 12 straight matches. It was a 16-game improvement and the best regular-season finish (second-place) since the late 1980s. The Govs, meanwhile, had two All-OVC selections - firstteam pick Henrique Norbiato and second-team selection Sean Bailey. After getting off to a rough start, the men closed with three straight wins to earn the OVC Tournament’s fifth-seed. It was the first tourney appearance for the Govs since 2005. A former two-time Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year, Tabet was named Austin Peay State University’s head tennis coach in August 2009. The previous spring, the French national completed his fifth full season as Indiana State’s women’s coach and first as men’s coach. In a five-year period, he led the Sycamore women to three Missouri Valley regular-season championships (2005, 2006, 2008) and an NCAA tournament appearance in 2008 following the Sycamores’ MVC tourney championship. His women’s tennis was ranked as high as 59th in country by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) in 2007 and 68th the following season. One of his players, Jennifer Migan, received an to the 2008 NCAA Individual Tournament and was ranked as high as No. 48 nationally and propelled his No. 1 doubles team to as high as No. 20 nationally. Overall, Indiana State players won 12 singles championship and six double titles at MVC Individuals (fall) with a total of 12 players earning All-MVC honors. Tabet was named Missouri Valley Coach of the Year in 2005 and 2008 while earning ITA Midwest Region Coach of the Year in 2007.
Tabet took over the Indiana State University women’s program in January 2004 after the retirement of Mary Ann Stadler. Before joining the Sycamores, Tabet served as an assistant coach of the women’s tennis team at the University of Arkansas in 2003. He also had experience as the men’s associate head coach at the University of New Orleans from 2001-03. While with the Privateers, UNO jumped from seventh to third in just one season before earning a second-place finish in the Sun Belt Conference during his second year in charge. Along the way, the Privateers earned a national ranking (No. 62) for the first time in school history. UNO’s No. 1 singles player was ranked in the top 50 nationally, while the No. 1 doubles team climbed into the nation’s top 40. As a college athlete Tabet played a significant role in propelling the University of Mobile (Ala.) to the 1997 NAIA National Championship. Ranked as high as fifth in the nation in singles, and 12th in doubles for the Rams during 1997, Mobile finished the 1998 season second in the NAIA national tourney, the same season Tabet was ranked as high as 10th in singles, and eighth in doubles. In 1997 and 1998 the University of Mobile won the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Championship with Tabet earning NAIA All-American each year. After transferring to the University of West Florida his senior season, Tabet helped the Argonauts earn the 1999 Gulf South Conference Championship and a third-place finish at the 1999 NCAA Division II National Tournament. He was named a Division II All-American after attaining rakings in singles (No. 12) and doubles (No. 18) play. After a successful college playing career, Tabet moved into coaching, landing the head position for both the West Georgia men and women’s tennis teams from 2000-01. In addition to his coaching duties, Tabet served as the program’s primary fundraiser, generating revenue through clinics and pro-am tournaments. While at West Georgia, Tabet led the women’s team to the Division II Gulf South Regional. Tabet also enjoyed a standout career as an international player, competing for the Algerian National Team from 1991-95, as well as the Algerian Davis Cup team. He won more than 90 tournaments in France. Tabet won the 1995 Sham International Tennis Open in Damascus Syria before taking top honors at the 1995 Gillette International Tennis Open in Rosas, Spain. In 1996 and 1997, he was champion of the French Rhone-Alps Region and qualified for the French National Championship, held at Rolland Garros, in Paris. A 1999 magna cum laude graduate of the University of Mobile, Tabet earned a bachelor’s degree in foreign languages and holds a master’s in applied linguistics from the University of New Orleans, where he worked in the foreign language department as a French instructor. Tabet also earned a baccalaureate in accounting from CUEFA in Grenoble, France.

Experience matters most to Austin Peay State University head tennis coach Malik Tabet, and he found just that in assistant coach Eric Larue, who joined the tennis program, June, 2011. Larue joins Austin Peay after three years at Division II Kentucky Weslyean, where he revived a struggling program. In fact, the Panthers posted a 13-7 record during his final season, tying the school record for single-season wins with the 1984 team. His teams posted back-to-back winning seasons and his 2010 recruiting class was rated second in the Great Lakes Valley Conference by tennisrecruiting.net. “We’re excited to have Eric as a part of our coaching staff,” Tabet said. “He has tremendous experience in building a program and recruiting good players. It’s always nice to have someone who knows already what he needs to do without having to give a lot of instructions.” Larue not only brings great determination from a recruiting standpoint, he also offers a desire to learn and develop administratively. His focus on academic success is evident in his former team’s three-year 3.4 grade-point average. His on-court experience began as a player at Campbellsville University where he was a two-time all-conference and alldistrict pick. Larue finished his collegiate career at Western Kentucky, playing in the Sun Belt Conference tournament twice. After graduation, he stayed on as an assistant coach for the Hilltoppers for the 1992 and 1993 seasons. From there, Larue served a 10-year post as assistant camp director for the Wilson Tennis Academy, in Portland, Tenn. He also worked as an instructor for the Offense/Defense Tennis Camp in Baltimore. Larue had a success post-graduation playing career, as well, recording seven top-20 USTA South Division rankings. Along the way, he won 15 USTA singles events and 16 USTA doubles events.
Bob Faires brings more than 35 years of administrative experience to the table, serving as the Tennis Center Manager for his seventh year. Faires joined Austin Peay’s staff in October 2004 and currently manages the Governors Indoor Center and oversees the operation and maintenance for the indoor and outdoor courts. He works extensively in promoting APSU tennis activities through on-campus leagues, clinics and scheduling lessons. A combat-wounded Veteran, Faires was a helicopter pilot for the Army Reserves during the Vietnam War. Upon retirement from the Army Reserves, Faires worked more than 35 years as a civilian for the Army Continuing Education System. In fact, he later retired as the director of Fort Campbell’s Army Education Center. While at Fort Campbell, he worked closely in maintaining relationships with Austin Peay, Murray State, Embry Riddle Aeronautical, Hopkinsville Community College and City Colleges of Chicago. He served on Austin Peay President Sherry Hoppe’s President’s Cabinet, as he facilitated Austin Peay degree programs at Fort Campbell. His connections to Austin Peay and his love for tennis made Faires a perfect fit with the Govs and Lady Govs tennis programs. Faires assists head coach Malik Tabet in a variety of capacities, including overseeing the Tennis Center budget, coordinating matches and tournaments, and organizing team travel. Faires is a long-time tennis player, who at one time, was ranked by the USTA in Tennessee’s 55-59 age group. Faires, with his wife Mickie, a retired elementary school teacher, celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary in 2011.

2010-11 APSU TENNIS HEADLINES ADEMOVIC NAMED FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR, THREE GOVS NAMED ALL-OVC BRENTWOOD - Jasmin Ademovic, of the Austin Peay State University men’s tennis team, was named Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year to highlight the Govs postseason tennis honors. Ademovic, along with sophomores Henrique Norbiato and Sean Bailey, also were named All-OVC first team. Not only is Ademovic the first Govs player to be named Freshman of the Year, it also was the first time in school history for the Govs to have three players earn first-team All-OVC accolades. Norbiato picked up his second first-team selection and it is the first for Bailey, who was a second-team pick last year. The three standout Govs led a team without an upperclassman to its best regular-season finish since the 1998 season, entering the 2011 OVC Tennis Tournament with a first-round bye as the overall No. 2 seed. Ademovic played at the top two singles spots, compiling a 12-5 overall mark and going 5-1 in OVC play. He began the season at No. 1, playing 10 of his first 11 matches at the position. A road win at Xavier sparked a four-match win streak, but he would lose three in row before moving to No. 2 singles, where he would finish the season. He would go on to win his last six matches, capping the season with a three-set come-frombehind win against Jacksonville State. On the doubles side, Ademovic teamed with fellow freshman Remi Calleja at No. 2 doubles, where they went 11-4 with a 4-2 OVC mark. Their strong play, along with that of Bailey and Norbiato, at No. 1 doubles, can account for the Govs winning 15 of 17 doubles points this season. Norbiato backed up a strong freshman campaign with an even better sophomore year. Not only did he play the top two singles positions, he went 14-3 during the spring with a 5-1 OVC mark. He opened the year winning eight of his first nine matches, his only loss coming in a threesetter against Lipscomb. Norbiato moved to No. 1 singles against Middle Tennessee and closed the season with six straight-set wins. The doubles team of Norbaito and Bailey anchored the Govs young team. A year ago, doubles play was a glaring weakness as the Govs lost in the OVC Tournament quarterfinals. Norbiato and Bailey took it upon themselves to change that and were successful in doing so. The pair opened the season with nine-straight wins and finished with 13 wins at No. 1 doubles and a 4-2 OVC mark. Bailey was the only Governors player to go undefeated in OVC play, winning all six matches played at No. 3 singles. For the season, he won 14 of 17 matches, including 13 at No. 3. BAILEY NAMED FIRST-TEAM CAPITAL ONE ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT CLARKSVILLE - Sophomore Sean Bailey, of the Austin Peay State University men’s tennis team, has been named to the Capital One Academic All-District first team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors Association.
A two-time All-Ohio Valley Conference selection, Bailey holds a 3.93 grade-point average, majoring in communication arts with a minor in French. Not only was he a first-team All-OVC pick as a sophomore, he helped the Govs to their first OVC Tournament Championship match since 1987. Academically, he has been named to the President’s List twice, the Dean’s List three times, the Athletics Director’s Honor Roll three times and received OVC Commissioner’s Honor Roll honors as a freshman. Bailey was the only Governors player to go undefeated in OVC play, winning all six matches played at No. 3 singles. For the season, he won 14 of 17 matches, including 13 at No. 3. He also went 1-1 at No. 2 singles. Perhaps the most impressive aspect of Bailey’s game was of his 14 wins, only one came in three-sets. He closed the season winning nine of his last 10. In the OVC tournament, Bailey was the only Govs player to win both matches played. GOVS TENNIS DOWNS TTU, ADVANCES TO OVC TITLE MATCH PADUCAH, Ky.. - Freshman Jasmin Ademovic closed a three-set match with a win to put Austin Peay State University men’s tennis team on top of Tennessee Tech, 4-1, in Ohio Valley Conference Tournament semifinal action, Saturday, at the Larry J. Heflin Tennis Center. The win moves the Govs (14-5) into the OVC Tournament championship match for the first time since 1987, where they face regular-season champion Eastern Kentucky at 2 p.m., Sunday. Not only did Ademovic earn the deciding win, he also picked up a win at No. 2 doubles, alongside fellow freshman Remi Calleja, to help the Govs win the doubles point. Freshman Joao Pagan and sophomore John Storie, meanwhile, blasted TTU’s No. 3 doubles with an 8-0 win. Tennessee Tech (8-9) did not go quietly in the singles competition. Storie had to battle for a straight-set win at No. 6, trailing in each set, but fighting to back to win. Bailey, meanwhile, won the first completed match at No. 3 singles. That left four matches on the court and each of those split the opening sets. Sophomore Henrique Norbiato was leading, 4-2, in his third set, while Pagan was serving for the match at No. 4 with two points to go. As the pressure mounted, it was Ademovic who put away the final points and called the celebration to his court. It marks the second time in two years at Austin Peay for Tabet to take a team to OVC championship game - last year the Lady Govs team won the title. This time, the Govs will have square off with an Eastern Kentucky team which ran the table to an undefeated conference mark. “We achieved what we wanted to achieve this season,” Tabet said. “Being in the final is a treat for us and we’re going to make the best out of it.”

2010-11 APSU TENNIS HEADLINES TOMIC AND WEIKARD NAMED ALL-OVC CLARKSVILLE - Junior Vanja Tomic and sophomore Carolin Weikard, of the Austin Peay State University tennis team, were each named firstteam All-Ohio Valley Conference, as voted on by the league’s coaches, Thursday, the league office announced.
LADY GOVS TENNIS SEEDED FOURTH AT OVC TOURNAMENT CLARKSVILLE - Austin Peay State University women’s tennis team will begin its Ohio Valley Conference Tournament title defense as the No. 4 seed with a 10 a.m., Friday match against No. 5 Murray State at the Larry J. Heflin Tennis Center, in Paducah, Ky.
It is the second-straight year for Tomic and Weikard to earn first-team All-OVC honors and also marks the third consecutive year for the Lady Govs to have a player named to the first team. Last season, Tomic was the league’s Player of the Year and Weikard was Freshman of the Year as the Lady Govs won the tournament championship and advanced to play Georgia Tech in the NCAA Regional.
“We have a young team and we knew that expectations were going to be different this year,” head coach Malik Tabet. “This year was a matter of building the team and understanding where we need to go. The further we got into the season, the more responsive the players were to what we asked as coaches.”
No argument exists that last year’s team set the bar high and, despite returning two of the league’s top players, a drop-off was expected in having freshmen fill out the bottom four spots. But Tomic and Weikard provided consistency at the top two spots. Tomic posted her second double-digit win season in as many years, winning 14 of 17 matches at No. 1 singles. She started the season with four straight wins, including an impressive non-conference stretch. Tomic won back-to-back three-set matches - the first at Xavier, where she lost the middle set and the second against Western Kentucky, where she dropped the opening set. “Vanja was injured in the Fall and it was difficult to get her to the level she could’ve been playing,” head coach Malik Tabet said. “I thought she did a good job in limiting the damage. She played a lot through her talent this year. You can look at her results and see the type of player that she is.” She played only three more three-set matches the rest of the way, winning each time. After falling at Southern Illinois, March 4, Tomic closed the season winning nine of her last 10 matches. Against OVC teams, Tomic went 7-1. Her only loss - and first career OVC loss - came against UT Martin’s Jodie Tiley, who herself is a first-team All-OVC pick. Weikard’s posted an 9-9 overall singles record, including a 5-3 OVC mark. In her second OVC season, her biggest contributions came in doubles play. Weikard played with both freshmen Andra Cornea and Kimberly Loo, posting a 12-2 record at both of the top two doubles positions. A skilled doubles player, Weikard’s team won six of seven doubles matches in OVC play. “It’s nice to have Carolin at the top of the lineup,” Tabet said. “I don’t think she was happy with a lot of her results this year and I think a lot of it was mental. She needed to play more against her opponent than against herself. She did a great job in doubles, playing with a freshman.”
Despite having the returning OVC Player of the Year in junior Vanja Tomic and the 2010 OVC Freshman of the Year in sophomore Carolin Weikard, the Lady Govs have seen their share of struggles throughout the season. Tomic has been strong at No. 1 singles, with her 14 wins tying for the league best. Weikard finished with a 5-3 OVC mark. Tabet knew there were going to be challenges when he lost a pair of All-OVC selections to graduation after winning the tournament title last season. He added four freshmen to make up the bottom of his lineup, but lost one early and was forced to play with only five players the season’s majority. Freshman Kimberly Loo enjoyed an impressive spring, winning 13 matches, including seven at No. 4 singles and six at No. 5. Loo also teamed with Weikard for a 7-1 mark at No. 1 doubles, including a 3-1 OVC clip. Freshman Andra Cornea had a 5-2 OVC mark at No. 3 singles, winning six overall matches. Freshman Rachel Margolies also showed constant improvement throughout the season, playing everywhere but No. 1 singles. Margolies with 6-2 in OVC play. “Kimberly and Rachel really stepped up,” Tabet said. “Rachel was expected to play No. 5 and she’s been at No. 3 for us. Vanja has had an up-and-down season, but she’s been solid the past two matches.” Murray State, meanwhile, has won three matches in the last three days, defeated SIU Edwardsville, Eastern Illinois and Morehead State. Each of those wins have come since dropping a 4-3 decision to Austin Peay, last Sunday. The Lady Govs defeated the Racers by winning four of six singles matches after dropping the doubles point. “When you win a 4-3 match, it could’ve gone either way,” Tabet said. “We realize that and I hope that we can finish, Friday. This is the conference tournament and anything can happen.”
She began the season playing with Loo and winning their first four matches. But when Tabet opted to balance out the doubles teams, he paired Weikard with Cornea. Again, Weikard thrived, this time winning five of six matches with the lone loss coming at Louisville. Weikard and Loo rejoined to win three of the final four matches.

Doubles: Tomic was just as dominating in doubles, pairing with second-team All-OVC pick Mariana Pagan for a 16-3 overall mark, including 8-1 league mark... after dropping three of the first six matches, the duo went on to win 12 consecutive matches... that run included seven straight OVC matches... the season’s most important win came in the OVC title, as Tomic and Pagan won in a tiebreaker to secure the doubles point.
