media information Media wanting to interview Austin Peay State University student-athletes, coaches or staff must contact the sports information office, which will arrange the interview. The best time to conduct interviews with student-athletes is after practice sessions, which vary by team, as do rules for interviewing at each team’s practice – please check with the sports information office for more information about a specific sport. Media that attend a practice session are asked to keep their distance from the action and not to talk to student-athletes or coaches while practice is occurring. A media relations representative will assist you in interviews after the practice’s completion. Team meetings before, during or after practice are private and not accessible to the media. Interviews that can not be conducted at that time will be arranged around the student-athlete or coach’s schedule. Phone numbers of student-athletes will NOT be released to the media and media should NEVER attempt to call student-athletes at home. It is requested that media give the sports information office enough advanced warning when they want to (a) arrange an interview or (b) attend a practice. Last minute interview requests cannot be guaranteed to be honored. The Athletic Department will do everything to respect the requests of the media and it is expected that the media respect the policies set forth by the sports information office.

THIS IS AUSTIN PEAY STATE UNIVERSITY

A

ustin Peay State University is a comprehensive, stateassisted university with a distinguished tradition in liberal and professional education. The institution is named in honor of Austin Peay, Tennessee’s governor from 1924 until 1927, the year APSU was founded. The university is located in Clarksville, Tenn., just 45 minutes northwest of Tennessee’s capital, Nashville, on Interstate 24. One of the South’s most historic cities, Clarksville also is Tennessee’s third-fastest growing city behind only Memphis and Nashville. Situated on gently rolling terrain near picturesque downtown Clarksville, Austin Peay’s main campus consists of 68 buildings on 169 acres. The classical Georgian architecture of the Austin Peay campus is combined with newer buildings. This blend provides a link with the past while reflecting the academic excellence and dignity of an institution of higher learning. The newest building additions to the main campus are the Foy Fitnees and Recreation Center, Sundquist Science Complex and the new Morgan University Center, each opening for use since 2001. The $11-million Foy Center, features a rock-climbing wall and 10,000 square feet of fitness space and other amenities for the student body. The Sundquist Complex is one of the South’s premier science education facilities and represents the largest capital appropriation ever in Tennessee for a single classroom building. The new Morgan University Center is located in the heart of the campus and features a cybercafe, meeting rooms, a food court, coffee shop, ballroom and lounges for Austin Peay students. Austin Peay’s campus has been the site of seven educational institutions since 1806. The campus was occupied by Southwestern for 50 years until 1925 when the school moved to Memphis. Austin Peay was founded two years later as a two-year normal school to train teachers for the region. Austin Peay has grown over the years to take its place among the finest mid-sized four-year universities in the nation. Austin Peay Normal School became a four-year college in 1941-42, and university status was conferred Sept. 1, 1967. Austin Peay State University currently enrolls more than 9,000 students from every region of Tennessee, most of the 50 states and several foreign countries. Austin Peay offers more than 50 majors in associate, bachelor’s, master’s and education specialist’s degrees with additional areas of concentration. Courses are offered in arts and sciences, business, education, engineering technology, nursing and human services. Graduate studies also are offered in several areas. In addition, numerous online courses are offered each semester. A state leader in public service, Austin Peay State University has more than 750 employees. Engaged in the most modern teaching techniques and research are nearly 280 full-time faculty members, 90 percent of whom hold the earned doctorate or appropriate terminal degrees in their disciplines.

Oct. 10-11, 2011

For a decade now, Austin Peay men and women’s golf teams have held their home golf tournaments in the Fall. From 1999-2003 the tournament was named the Precept Intercollegiate, but a new partnership was formed. Since the 2004 season, it has been the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate. The women’s tournament is a two-day, two-round event played at the 5,960-yard Clarksville Country Club. The men’s tournament is a two-day, three-round event played at The Links at Novadell, a par72, 6,841-yard course in Hopkinsville, Ky. Due to a scheduling conflict, the 2011 women’s tournament was held at The Links at Novadell.

GOVS HEAD COACH KIRK KAYDEN Kirk Kayden was named Austin Peay men’s golf coach in July, 2004 — and he has not only sustained the Govs’ 60-year golf tradition, but he elevated it to a higher level in capturing the 2009 Ohio Valley Conference Championship. Kayden took over the Govs program after Austin Peay won three consecutive Ohio Valley Conference Championships (2001-2003) and has led the team to 36 program records in seven seasons. In 2009, the Govs set a record for the lowest 18-hole team score after setting records for 36- and 54-hole team scores in the 2006-07 season. On the individual side, Kayden has helped lead the Govs to the four lowest 18-hole rounds in school history, eight of the 10 lowest 36-hole rounds and 12 of the 14 lowest individual 54-hole records, setting 80 individual records. Under Kayden’s guidance, student-athletes have earned a total of 13 All-OVC honors, including two OVC Freshman of the Year selections (Erik Barnes, 2007 and Grant Leaver, 2005), while Barnes also was named OVC Player of the Year in 2009. Luke Sherrod was a first-team All-OVC pick and was named All-Newcomer, while Brian Balthrop and Sherrod were each named OVC All-Tournament as part of the Govs 2009 OVC title. The 2008-09 season was a memorable one for Kayden, highlighted by an OVC Championship and a program-record 13th-place finish at the NCAA Central Regional. Then-senior Erik Barnes set the individual 54-hole record with a three-round 199 – the program’s first-ever sub-200 round – leading the Govs to a nine-stroke tournament win. In fact, during that Fall season, the Govs finished in the top five in every tournament played. Kayden kept the Govs rolling during the 2009 Spring schedule. A secondplace finish at the Morehead State Spring Kick-Off was a precursor to winning the Grub Mart-Young Oil Intercollegiate, placing three Govs in top-10. Barnes would go on to take medalist honors at the Kentucky Bluegrass Invitational two weeks prior to the team’s OVC Tournament win. Kayden built off the 2009 success in adding a talented recruiting class for the upcoming year. After losing a successful senior class to graduation in 2010, the Govs had three players earn All-OVC in 2011 – freshmen Anthony Bradley and Marco Iten, along with sophomore Dustin Korte. In the 2007-08 season, Kayden coached the Govs to five top-five tournament finishes—the Troy University Invitational, the Diablo Grande Intercollegiate, the Aldila/Middle Tennesse Intercollegiate, the Arkansas State Indian Classic and the Ohio Valley Conference Championship. The Govs’ best performance came at the Arkansas State Indian Classic where the team fired a 30-under-par 834 and set numerous team and individual records while holding off tournament host Arkansas State by two strokes. In the 2006-07 season, Kayden led the Govs to seven top-five tournament finishes—the Xavier Invitational, the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational, the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate, the Sam Hall Intercollegiate, the UALR/First Tee Collegiate and the O’Reilly OVC Championship. The Govs’ best effort came at the Belmont Intercollegiate, as they set numerous team and individual scoring records while firing a 28 under-par 824, to run away with team medalist honors. Before coming to Austin Peay, the Fremont, Ohio, native played an integral part in Penn State’s appearance in three straight NCAA regionals, including a 15th-place finish at the NCAA championships in 2004. LADY GOVS HEAD COACH SARA ROBSON The promotion of thenassistant Sara Robson to women’s head coach when Austin Peay chose to divide its golf programs in the Summer of 2005 was a studied one. That decision has proven to be the right one, as Robson has led the Lady Govs to much success over the past six years. Robson is her seventh Lady Govs head coaching season after serving two seasons as the combined programs assistant. Throughout the past six seasons, Robson has guided the Lady Govs to 13 18-hole team records, 10 36-hole team records and 14 54-hole team records. Individually, Robson’s golfers have set five 18-hole marks, eight 36-hole records as well as six 54-hole records. In all, Robson’s teams account for more than 50 team or individual APSU records. Robson’s team recorded eight top-five tournament finishes during 2010-11, led by senior Chelsea Harris who also was the Lady Govs only All-OVC selection. With Harris earning her fourth-straight OVC All-Tourney honors for fifth-place individual finish, the Lady Govs shot a 948 for fifth place. In fact, the three-round 948 was APSU’s best-ever three-round OVC tournament total. The 2009-10 season saw Robson’s hard work manifested in Harris being named the OVC Player of the Year. Not only did Harris earn the top player award, she also took home medalist honors at the OVC Tournament, winning by five strokes. As a team, the Lady Govs earned a fourth-place finish, their best tourney finish under Robson. That strong finish was expected as Robson’s team notched the program’s top two team 54-hole records. The first came at the Murray State Drake Creek Invitational, where they finished fourth as a team with a 932. The Lady Govs were one stroke off that pace with a 933, in the spring, at the EKU Lady Colonel Classic. Her first two seasons as the Lady Govs head coach showed a steady improvement for a program that would quickly become established in the league. Robson led Austin Peay to an improved stroke average in each of those seasons, working to develop a foundation on which to build for the future. She brought in local standout Staci Lynch for the 2006-07 season and was not disappointed. As a freshman, Lynch was the Lady Govs top scorer in 11 of 12 tournaments, finishing with eight top-10 finishes. She won two tournaments – the Great Smokies Women’s Collegiate, where she set the program’s 36-hole record at 140, and the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate. Lynch finished with a 76.3 stroke average, which remains the best of any Robson-coached golfer, and was named the Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year. During that season, the Lady Govs had three top-five and seven top-10 finishes: the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate, the Troy Women’s Intercollegiate, the Ann Rhoads/BSC Shootout, Belmont Intercollegiate, the Saluki Invitational, the EKU Spring Invitational and the OVC Championship. The Lady Govs had six top-10 and two top-five finishes in 2007-08, led this time by another freshman, Chelsea Harris. The Metropolis, Ill, native posted a 78.96 scoring average and became the second Lady Govs player to earn All-OVC honors in as many years. Harris also was named to the OVC All-Newcomer team and finished third at the OVC Championship with a 234. The 2008-09 season was a banner year for the Lady Govs. Harris was named first-team All-OVC while earning OVC All-Tournament honors with a fifth-place finish at the event. The Lady Govs recorded a .321 team stroke average, improving by almost three strokes over the previous season. They set four 54-hole team records, including a 953 at the Chris Banister Gamecock Classic. Harris recorded

seven top-10 finishes and set three 54-hole individual marks – the best coming at the Eat-A-Peach Collegiate where she fired a three-round 230 to finish second. Even with each season’s improvement, Robson has instilled in her team the ability to look forward and prepare for the real goal – an OVC Championship. Robson’s impact on the Lady Govs has seen success not only on the golf course, but also in the classroom. In fact, during the 2008-09 season Lady Govs sophomore Catie Tucker was named to the National Golf Association Division I All-American Scholar team and received the OVC Medal of Honor for highest GPA in a conference-sponsored sport. Tucker, who was one six APSU golfers named to the 08-09 OVC Commissioners Honor Roll, also received the Perkins Freeman Governors Club Scholarship. The 2009-10 team had three players – Tucker, Ashley Wathen and Catherine Smith – named to the NGCA All-American Scholar team. The Lady Govs followed that by winning the OVC’s Academic Achievement Award for the third-straight year in 2010-11. That team’s 3.691 GPA was the NGCA’s 12th-highest among nearly 400 teams across the country. Robson came to APSU from Belmont, where she served one season as a student assistant after playing for the program from 1998-2001. Her duties as assistant included keeping team statistics and assisting the head coach in all administrative aspects. In the summers of 2001 and 2002, Robson was assistant academy director for the Indiana Golf Association. There, she was a group mentor and taught designated programs and clinics. Robson is currently certified as a class A status in LPGA Teaching ranks and as a club professional. Previously, she was a junior golf office assistant for the Tennessee Golf Foundation. The Metropolis, Ill., native graduated in May 2002 from Belmont with a degree in religion and elementary education. She is married to Eric Robson.

GRADUATE ASSISTANT CHELSEA HARRIS There is probably no better player to come out of the Austin Peay women’s golf program than Chelsea Harris, and when she expressed her desire to stay with the team as a graduate assistant, it was an easy decision for head coach Sara Robson. Not only was Harris awarded Austin Peay’s prestigious Legend’s Award as the University’s most valuable senior female athlete, she earned just as many honors on the golf course. The Metropolis, Ill., native was the 2009 Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year and holds three of the Lady Govs top-10 18-hole scores along with five of the top-10 36-hole scores. She is the only Austin Peay player to earn All-OVC honors four times – being named first team in each of her final three seasons and second team as a freshman. Harris’ experience on the course is validated in her being the only Lady Govs player to make the OVC All-Tournament team four times, and becoming the second Lady Govs player to earn OVC Tournament medalist honors. In her final season, Harris recorded seven top-10 finishes, including a tournament win at the SIUE Intercollegiate – which was her third individual championships. She also had three second-place finishes, including the EKU Lady Colonel Classic where she posted the lowest 54-hole total (221) in Lady Govs history. The Tennessee Golf Association chose Harris to represent Tennessee for the Southeastern Women’s Amateur Team Championship in October. However, a wrist injury prevented her from competing play in the Solheim Cup/Ryder Cuptype event. Harris will assist coach Robson in with planning travel and recruiting, while also providing on-course instruction.
