ustin Peay State University is a comprehensive, state-assisted university with a distinguished tradition in liberal and professional education. The institution is named in honor of Austin Peay, Tennessee’s governor from 1924 until 1927, the year APSU was founded. The university is located in Clarksville, Tenn., just 45 minutes northwest of Tennessee’s capital, Nashville, on Interstate 24. One of the South’s most historic cities, Clarksville also is Tennessee’s third-fastest growing city behind only Memphis and Nashville. Situated on gently rolling terrain near picturesque downtown Clarksville, Austin Peay’s main campus consists of 68 buildings on 169 acres. The classical Georgian architecture of the Austin Peay campus is combined with newer buildings. This blend provides a link with the past while reflecting the academic excellence and dignity of an institution of higher learning. The newest building additions to the main campus are the Hemlock Semiconductor Building, Foy Fitness and Recreation Center, Sundquist Science Complex and the Morgan University Center, each opening for use since 2001. The Hemlock Semiconductor Building houses the chemical engineering technology (CET) associate degree program and laboratory. The $11-million Foy Center, features a rock-climbing wall and 10,000 square feet of fitness space and other amenities for the student body. The Sundquist Complex is one of the South’s premier science education facilities and represents the largest capital appropriation ever in Tennessee for a single classroom building. The new Morgan University Center is located in the heart of the campus and features a cybercafe, meeting rooms, a food court, coffee shop, ballroom and lounges for Austin Peay students. Austin Peay’s campus has been the site of seven educational institutions since 1806. The campus was occupied by Southwestern for 50 years until 1925 when the school moved to Memphis. Austin Peay was founded two years later as a two-year normal school to train teachers for the region. Austin Peay has grown over the years to take its place among the finest mid-sized four-year universities in the nation. Austin Peay Normal School became a four-year college in 1941-42, and university status was conferred Sept. 1, 1967. Austin Peay State University currently enrolls more than 10,000 students from every region of Tennessee, most of the 50 states and several foreign countries. Austin Peay offers more than 50 majors in associate, bachelor’s, master’s and education specialist’s degrees with additional areas of concentration. Courses are offered in arts and sciences, business, education, engineering technology, nursing and human services. Graduate studies also are offered in several areas. In addition, numerous online courses are offered each semester. A state leader in public service, Austin Peay State University has more than 750 employees. LADY GOVS’ NEWS AND NOTES:

LADY GOVS SOCCER

TATIANA ARIZA NAMED OVC PLAYER OF THE YEAR, THREE LADY GOVS EARN POSTSEASON HONORS BRENTWOOD - Tatiana Ariza was named the Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year to highlight Austin Peay State University’s women soccer team’s postseason awards. Tatiana also was joined by her sister freshman Natalia Ariza as first-team All-OVC selections, while fellow freshman midfielder Joceline Quiceno was a second-team All-OVC pick. All three were named to the league’s All-Newcomer team. Heading into the 2010 season, head coach Kelley Guth knew that her program’s success hinged on a number of freshmen being able to contribute immediately. Expectations were exceeded with three Lady Govs freshmen earning postseason recognition, the most in program history. As the first Lady Govs player ever to earn OVC Freshman of the Year honors, Tatiana Ariza parlayed her international soccer experience perfectly into a record-setting freshman campaign. She scored the gamewinner in her first collegiate game against Western Illinois and her next three goals also would come in clutch situations. With the OVC Tournament remaining, Tatiana leads the Lady Govs with nine goals, while also posting four assists. Tatiana Ariza is without question the most dynamic offensive player in the Lady Govs soccer annals. Her nine goals are the second-best single-season tally and the most ever scored by a freshman. Even more impressive is the fact six of her nine goals came as game-winners and three came against OVC opponents. She placed 34 of her team-leading 58 shots on goal, for an astounding .586 shots-on-goal percentage and a single-season high 2.00 shots-on-goal per game average. Natalia Ariza joined her sister Tatiana in not missing a beat with the Lady Govs. She finished third on the time with 11 points, scoring four goals and recording three assists. Playing in the midfield, Natalia was able to develop a flow with Joceline Quiceno, senior Michelle Johnson and sophomore Jocelyn Murdoch in order to improve the Lady Govs from a struggling offensive team in 2009, to lead the OVC in team shots (319), points (87) and goals (32) a year later. When the Lady Govs were hit by injuries and the offense seemed to stutter, it was Natalia who stepped into the limelight. Two of her four goals came in the season’s final two games, helping to produce a three-game win streak heading into the OVC tournament. Joceline Quiceno, a second-team All-OVC pick, also was a key cog in the Lady Govs midfield, finishing with two goals and four assists. Her impact was immediate, as she posted a goal and an assist in her first collegiate game at VMI to open the season. Quiceno’s 45 shots were second-best on the team behind Taiana Ariza and her four assists tied for fourth-best in the OVC. This marks the sixth season for the OVC to select an All-Newcomer team with the Lady Govs having a player named each time. However, this is the first season for the Lady Govs to have three All-Newcomer selections. It also is the first season for the Lady Govs to have two players named first-team All-OVC. -AP-

LADY GOVS MAKE EXCITING POSTSEASON RUN MOREHEAD, Ky - Austin Peay’s OVC tournament run came to an end with a 2-1 loss to Morehead State in the tournament championship game. The Lady Govs’ only goal came off the foot of OVC Freshman of the Year Tatiana Ariza in the 16th minute. A pair second-half scoring opportunities came up short, leaving APSU one game away from its first-ever OVC title. Heading into the postseason tournament as the No. 3 seed, the Lady Govs won a 1-0, quarterfinal match against Murray State. It was Renny Robinson scoring the gamewinner within the final 10 minutes to secure Austin Peay’s first-ever OVC Tournament win. The semifinals pitted APSU against Southeast Missouri - the tournament’s No. 2 seed. The Lady Govs looked to the Arizas - Natalia and Tatiana for offense and got it. Natalia scored the game’s first goal, only to have equalized by SEMO. A penalty kick in the 88th minute scored by Natalia proved to be the gamewinner. Tatiana would tack on the insurance, when Southeast pulled the keeper, in the 89th minute for a 3-1 margin. -APTATIANA ARIZA NAMED TO COLOMBIAN WORLD CUP ROSTER CLARKSVILLE - For the first time in school history, Austin Peay State University women’s soccer program will be represented in FIFA’s Women’s World Cup with upcoming sophomore Tatiana Ariza playing for the Colombian national team, beginning with a Tuesday match against Sweden. Although the appearance is new to this Colombian team, Ariza is one of several players that participated in the U-20 Women’s World Cup, last summer, also in Germany. Ariza also was a key player in the U-17 team’s run in 2008. Both Tatiana and Natalia Ariza were invited to attend camp for the Colombian team in part due to their participation with the U17 and U20 teams. In fact, during the U17 World Cup, Tatiana was the team’s Most Valuable Player and the leading goal scorer during the tournament. Natalia made the it to the final 23 players, but missed on making the final cut. Ariza and Colombia were assigned to Group C, along with Korea DPR, Sweden and the United States. While the Americans are the clear favorites to win the Group, Sweden also is steadily in the mix. The Colombians are touted as a surprise team after finishing second to Brazil in the Conmebol section to make their first-ever run at the final stages. Ariza became Austin Peay’s first-ever Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year, leading the Lady Govs to their the OVC Tournament Championship game in 2010. Without question, she is the most dynamic offensive player in Austin Peay history - scoring 11 goals and recording five assists. The most impressive aspect of Ariza’s game is her ability to perform in the clutch. Six of her 11 goals came as gamewinners and three came in OVC play. -AP-

COACHES AND PLAYERS 6

KELLEY GUTH

LADY GOVS SOCCER Head Coach 10th Season Florida State, 1996

As the only head coach in Lady Govs soccer history, Kelley Guth made a lasting impression in the Ohio Valley Conference soccer ranks after taking her team to its first-ever OVC Tournament championship game in 2010. Despite injuries that depleted her defense, Guth’s team was sparked by OVC Freshman of the Year Tatiana Ariza, along with first-team pick Natalia Ariza and second-team All-OVC selection Joceline Quiceno. Those three freshman, along with a nationallyranked defense, set the tone for undoubtedly the most successful Lady Govs soccer team in program history. After appearing in the OVC tournament twice previously, the 2010 season was a breath of fresh air for Guth. Her pedigree on the pitch as both a player and coach has always been above reproach, which is why her team’s recent success was so important to the program after winning only one game during an injury-plagued 2009 season. Guth began her collegiate soccer career at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, B.C., where she led her squad as a two-time NAIA first-team All-America selection and twice selected conference player of the year. In 1993, her first season with the Clan, Guth was an NAIA All-America honorable mention. She improved her second season as the Clan claimed a conference championship and she collected first-team All-America honors. In 1995, she again received first-team All-America honors, while Simon Fraser placed fifth in the NAIA national tournament. In 1996, she transferred for one season at Florida State University and left her mark in those record books as well. In one season, Guth scored 14 goals, including six game-winners which are the most all-time at FSU. Her 29 points and 56 shots on goal are single-season records as well. Her coaching career began at Florida State University High School in 1997, where she coached for three seasons. While coaching at FSU High School, she also played in the W-League, a national amateur league, for the Fort Collins Force. With the Force, Guth received all-tournament honors as well as player of the week honors twice, as the Force took home the 1998 W-League championship. Guth also played for the Florida State women’s club team and was named women’s open division MVP of the National IntramuralRecreation Sports Association. Guth received her initial Division I soccer coaching opportunity with Ohio Valley Conference member Southeast Missouri under her former FSU head coach Heather Nelson. As an assistant coach in 2000 and 2001, Guth was in

charge of recruiting, academic oversight of student-athletes as well as overseeing all travel arrangements while assisting in practice with all positions on the field. Guth’s inaugural season with the Lady Govs was indeed a challenge, finishing 0-13-3; the team scoring only nine goals. However, the Lady Govs steadily improved during their second season, posting five wins and 25 goals. In 2004, the Lady Govs continued to mature on the field under Guth’s guidance. After a rough start, they finished strong with a conference victory at Murray State. The Lady Govs posted the program’s best record yet, 8-9-2 overall and 1-6-1 in the league, scoring 29 goals. Two years later, in 2006, the Lady Govs went 5-4 in league play, before hitting a two-year OVC slump. The 2008 season was particularly frustrating as the Lady Govs drop eight one-goal matches. In 2009, the Lady Govs were challenged with overcoming a number of injuries and that was no different for the 2010 slate. In fact, last season during the OVC championship game, Guth was relegated to only substitute for the final match after Joceline Quiceno suffered a knee injury early the final contest. Her accomplishments as a player and coach continued to be recognized as she was inducted into the Delta (British Columbia) Sports Hall of Fame, in June 2004. Guth was one of 10 inductees into the inaugural class, selected from a group of 60. In March 2009, Guth was appointed as the OVC’s representative for the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). Guth, who also assists the Clarksville Royals Futbol Club in their player development program, currently resides in Clarksville with her husband Matt, who works as a correctional officer for the Davidson County Sheriff’s Department in Nashville.

COACHES

JEREMY LADY GOVS SULLIVAN Assistant Coach 5th Season Jacksonville State, 2003

Jeremy Sullivan is in his fifth season as the Lady Govs goalkeepers coach and recruiting coordinator. His work on and off the field during the 2010 season led to his being named the Midwest Region College Assistant Coach of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association. The 2010 season saw the Lady Govs advance to the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament championship game, in part due to a strong defense and brilliant work in net. Austin Peay led the league in goals-against-average (.687) which ranked 23rd nationally, shutout percentage (.591), which ranked eighth-best nationally, and save percentage (.850), which ranked 24th nationally. Sullivan also played a large role in recruiting OVC Freshman of the Year Tatiana Ariza, as well as two other All-OVC selections in Natalia Ariza and Joceline Quiceno – all freshmen. Sullivan came to Austin Peay after two years as a graduate assistant at Belmont, where he earned his master’s of education while serving as the Bruins goalkeepers coach. The Alabama native played college soccer at Wallace State Community College, in Hanceville, Ala., where he led the Lions to a 15th national ranking in his final season. He then transferred to Jacksonville State, where he completed his degree in recreation administration. As an undergrad, Sullivan worked three seasons as a student assistant. In that time, Sullivan also worked at Donoho School as the head coach. While at Belmont, Sullivan also was the head coach of the Brentwood Eclipse U13. JAKE SOCCER WYMAN

Volunteer Assistant Coach 1st Season Coker College, 2008)

Jake Wyman joined the Lady Govs during the summer as a volunteer assistant for the 2011 season. Wyman brings more than three years as a goalkeeper coach at Division II Lander University as well as two years as head coach at Emerald High School, in Greenwood, S.C. While at Emerald, Wyman’s team’s advanced to state tournament twice, finishing seventh in 2010 and earning a fifth-place finish in 2011. The Vikings also won a pair of region championships and Wyman was named the region’s 2011 Coach of the Year. That success led to him being named the women’s assistant coach at Lander. Wyman’s focus was aimed at goalkeepers and maintaining the team’s strength and conditioning regiment. In three years, the Bearcats posted 23 shutouts, while allowing 54 goals for a 1.13 goals-against-average. Wyman, a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, holds a United States Soccer Federation Class C License. CARLEY LADY GOVS NEWMAN Graduate Assistant 1st Season Austin Peay, 2010

Carley Newman returns to the 2011 Lady Govs in her new role as the team’s graduate assistant after serving for three previous years as the team’s starting keeper. She will serve in an administrative role for head coach Kelley Guth, while also assisting with the goalkeepers. Newman is coming off her finest season in net, allowing only 15 goals in 194 shots attempts. The Lady Govs had .687 goalsagainst-average, ranking 23rd nationally, while Newman’s .850 save percentage ranked 24th nationally. At the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament, where the Lady Govs played in the championship game, Newman was one of three APSU players named the all-tournament team. The Memphis native actually began her career as a defender, playing 11 games in the position as a freshman due to a hand injury that prevented her from taking post in net. The following season, she won the starting job two games into the season after posting a shutout against Lipscomb and eventually was named the team’s most valuable player. Academically, Newman was named to the Athletics Director’s Honor Roll five times, the Dean’s List twice and the OVC Commissioner’s Honor Roll once. She is currently performing her graduate work in the Health and Human Performance Department while working on her master’s degree.
