Morgan Brothers Soccer Field opened in 2005, providing Austin Peay arguably the best soccer pitch in the Ohio Valley Conference. The field once served as a practice for Austin Peay football and came about because of the generosity of the Morgan Brothers Construction, who provided the excavation and field preparation for the facility’s construction. How good is the Lady Govs field? The Tennessee Titans chose Austin Peay and the Morgan Brothers Soccer Field to serve as its summer training camp home in 2006—the only time the Titans have trained outside of Nashville since arriving in the Music City. APSU began playing soccer in 2002 and for the first three seasons the Lady Govs played its home matches at Heritage Park, a citymaintained facility. But as the program matured, an on-campus field became a necessity and with the help of the Morgan Brothers, that dream was realized. The Lady Govs first victory at Morgan Bros. Soccer Field came on Sep. 23, 2005 against rival Murray State. Erica Dengler scored 27 seconds into the match and added a late goal for a 3-1 APSU victory. In 2006, the Lady Govs lost only once at home. In fact, Austin Peay was better than .500 in each of their first three seasons in which they called Morgan Bros. Field home. The 2010 squad posted the program’s best-ever home record, going 8-1-0 on the home pitch. Tatiana Ariza scored six of her 11 goals in Clarksville and Austin Peay allowed just one goal at home, with Carley Newman earning five shut outs.

Austin Peay was founded two years later as a twoyear normal school to train teachers for the region. Austin Peay has grown over the years to take its place among the finest mid-sized four-year universities in the nation. AUSTIN PEAY WOMEN’S SOCCER 2012

KELLEY GUTH Head Coach 11th Season Florida State, 1996

Entering her 11th season, Kelley Guth remains the only head coach in Austin Peay women’s soccer history. Despite injuries that depleted her defense, Guth’s 2010 team was sparked by OVC Freshman of the Year Tatiana Ariza, along with first-team pick Natalia Ariza and second-team All-OVC selection Joceline Quiceno. Those three freshman, along with a nationally-ranked defense, set the tone for undoubtedly the most successful Lady Govs soccer team in program history. After appearing in the OVC tournament twice previously, the 2010 season was a breath of fresh air for Guth. Her pedigree on the pitch as both a player and coach has always been above reproach, which is why her team’s recent success was so important to the program after winning only one game during an injury-plagued 2009 season. Guth began her collegiate soccer career at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, B.C., where she led her squad as a twotime NAIA first-team All-America selection and twice selected conference player of the year. In 1993, her first season with the Clan, Guth was an NAIA All-America honorable mention. She improved her second season as the Clan claimed a conference championship and she collected first-team All-America honors. In 1995, she again received first-team All-America honors, while Simon Fraser placed fifth in the NAIA national tournament. In 1996, she transferred for one season at Florida State University and left her mark in those record books as well. In one season, Guth scored 14 goals, including six game-winners which are third-most all-time at FSU. Her coaching career began at Florida State University High School in 1997, where she coached for three seasons. While coaching at FSU High School, she also played in the W-League, a national amateur league, for the Fort Collins Force. With the Force, Guth received all-tournament honors as well as player of the week honors twice, as the Force took home the 1998 W-League championship. Guth also played for the Florida State women’s club team and was named women’s open division MVP of the National

Intramural-Recreation Sports Association. Guth received her initial Division I soccer coaching opportunity with Ohio Valley Conference member Southeast Missouri under her former FSU head coach Heather Nelson. As an assistant coach in 2000 and 2001, Guth was in charge of recruiting, academic oversight of student-athletes as well as overseeing all travel arrangements while assisting in practice with all positions on the field. Guth’s inaugural season with the Lady Govs was indeed a challenge, finishing 0-13-3; the team scored only nine goals. However, the Lady Govs steadily improved during their second season, posting five wins and 25 goals. In 2004, the Lady Govs continued to mature on the field under Guth’s guidance. After a rough start, they finished strong with a conference victory at Murray State. The Lady Govs posted the program’s best record yet, 8-9-2 overall and 1-6-1 in the league, scoring 29 goals. Two years later, in 2006, the Lady Govs went 5-4 in league play, before hitting a two-year OVC slump. The 2008 season was particularly frustrating as the Lady Govs drop eight one-goal matches. In 2009, the Lady Govs were challenged with overcoming a number of injuries and that was no different for the 2010 slate. In fact, last season during the OVC championship game, Guth was relegated to only one substitute for the final match after Joceline Quiceno suffered a knee injury early the final contest. Her accomplishments as a player and coach continued to be recognized as she was inducted into the Delta (British Columbia) Sports Hall of Fame, in June 2004. Guth was one of 10 inductees into the inaugural class, selected from a group of 60. In March 2009, Guth was appointed as the OVC’s representative for the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). Guth, who also assists the Clarksville Royals Futbol Club in their player development program, currently resides in Clarksville with her husband Matt, who works as a correctional officer for the Davidson County Sheriff’s Department in Nashville.

AUSTIN PEAY WOMEN’S SOCCER 2012 JEREMY SULLIVAN

JAKE WYMAN

Jeremy Sullivan is in his sixth season as the Lady Govs goalkeepers coach and recruiting coordinator. His work on and off the field during the 2010 season led to his being named the Midwest Region College Assistant Coach of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association. The 2010 season saw the Lady Govs advance to the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament championship game, in part due to a strong defense and brilliant work in net. Austin Peay led the league in goals-against-average (.687) which ranked 23rd nationally, shutout percentage (.591), which ranked eighth-best nationally, and save percentage (.850), which ranked 24th nationally. Sullivan also played a large role in recruiting OVC Freshman of the Year Tatiana Ariza, as well as two other All-OVC selections in Natalia Ariza and Joceline Quiceno – all freshmen. Sullivan came to Austin Peay after two years as a graduate assistant at Belmont, where he earned his master’s of education while serving as the Bruins goalkeepers coach. The Alabama native played college soccer at Wallace State Community College, in Hanceville, Ala., where he led the Lions to a 15th national ranking in his final season. He then transferred to Jacksonville State, where he completed his degree in recreation administration. As an undergrad, Sullivan worked three seasons as a student assistant. In that time, Sullivan also worked at Donoho School as the head coach. While at Belmont, Sullivan also was the head coach of the Brentwood Eclipse U13. He holds his NSCAA Advanced National Diploma and a USSF Class D license. Sullivan lives in Clarksville with his wife, Jessica, and their daughters Lyla, age 3, and Remi, who was born July 4 of 2012.

Jake Wyman joined the Lady Govs during the summer as a volunteer assistant for the 2011 season. Wyman brings more than three years as a goalkeeper coach at Division II Lander University as well as two years as head coach at Emerald High School, in Greenwood, S.C. While at Emerald, Wyman’s team’s advanced to state tournament twice, finishing seventh in 2010 and earning a fifth-place finish in 2011. The Vikings also won a pair of region championships and Wyman was named the region’s 2011 Coach of the Year. That success led to him being named the women’s assistant coach at Lander. Wyman’s focus was aimed at goalkeepers and maintaining the team’s strength and conditioning regiment. In three years, the Bearcats posted 23 shutouts, while allowing 54 goals for a 1.13 goals-against-average. Wyman, a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, holds a United States Soccer Federation Class C License. He also owns a physical education degree from Lander and an exercise science degree from Coker College, where he was a four-year starter.

2011 Season In Review Lady Govs picked third in preseason poll A year removed from the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament’s championship game, Austin Peay State University women’s soccer team was picked third in the OVC’s preseason soccer poll. Morehead State (154 - 14 first-place votes) was picked to win the league on the heels of its second-straight tournament title, followed by Southeast Missouri (134 - one first-place vote) and Austin Peay (133 - five first-place votes). Murray State (94), UT Martin (90), Eastern Kentucky (88), Eastern Illinois (81), SIU Edwardsville (67), Tennessee Tech (37) and Jacksonville State (22) rounded out the field. The Lady Govs entered 2011 on the heels of the program’s most successful season in its short 10-year history, posting a 14-6-1 overall mark along with a 4-3-1 OVC clip. Not only did

they finish second in the league, they avenged a regular-season loss to Southeast Missouri in OVC tourney play to advance to the program’s first-ever title game. Austin Peay is entered 2011 at full health. Guth’s team returned OVC Freshman of the Year Tatiana Ariza, along with two other All-OVC picks in Natalia Ariza and Joceline Quiceno. Record-Setting win at Alabama A&M Freshman Claire Pultz had a record-setting four goals as Austin Peay rewrote the record books with a 14-0 seasonopening win at Alabama A&M. The Lady Govs opened their season with a win for the second consecutive season and did so in dominant fashion. They set single-game program records for goals (14), assists (nine) and points. Pultz’s four goals were an individual single-

AUSTIN PEAY WOMEN’S SOCCER 2012 game record, while her eight points, along with eight points by sophomore Tatiana Ariza, also were APSU single-game marks. Junior Emily Perkins also added three goals. Sophomore Natalia Ariza finished with a goal and two assists, as did sophomore Andy Quiceno. Junior Renny Robinson had a goal and an assist, while junior Jocelyn Murdoch had a goal and sophomore Joceline Quiceno had two assists. More Offense Leads Lady Govs to Win at Chattanooga A pair of bookend goals by sophomore Tatiana Ariza opened and closed a 4-0 win by Austin Peay against Chattanooga. Ariza scored the game’s first goal on a penalty kick in the 39th minute to make it 1-0, and added the game’s fourth goal in the 82nd minute. Not only was it her third career multi-goal game, it also was her second consecutive after netting a hat trick against Alabama A&M. Austin Peay’s group of impressive young strikers was highly effective against the Mocs, putting 10 of their 13 shots on goal. Ariza’s penalty kick goal, however, was the only score in the first half, giving the Lady Govs a 1-0 halftime lead. Following the break, APSU went on a frenzy to break open the game. A combination play by Murdoch and Tatiana Ariza set up a cross that Pultz finished, making it 2-0 in the 55th minute. It was Pultz’s fifth goal of the season. APSU’s high-pressure attack led to an empty net goal by Perkins in the 72nd minute on a failed Mocs clear. For Perkins, it was her season’s fourth goal after netting three against Alabama A&M. Lady Govs senior Mackenzie Ladd and sophomore Haley Shoaff split time in net for the second consecutive game. Ladd made three first-half saves and Shoaff made two stops in the second half. With two games under the belt, Austin Peay’s offense has had no trouble finding the back of the net. With 18 goals in 180 minutes of action, the Lady Govs front line already acheived the program’s eighth-best all-time season scoring mark. Tatiana Ariza became APSU’s second all-time leading scorer with 20 career goals. She was awarded OVC Player of the Week honors for her work in the season’s first two games. The win also marked the second-straight season for APSU to open the season 2-0. Shutout and hat trick highlight home opener Austin Peay opened its home schedule by shutting out Union, 5-0 at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field. Tatiana Ariza netted her season’s second hat trick, while sophomore Natalia Ariza and Perkins each added a goal as well. While the Lady Govs (3-0) outshot Union 24-2, the Bulldogs had many of their first-half opportunites thwarted by the Lady Govs back line. With sophomore Emily Kink joined by freshman Taylor Van Wagner in the middle, juniors Renny Robinson and Stephanie Weider, along with sophomore Corey Osborn provided protection on the outsides. For the third straight game, Ladd and Shoaff split time in net. Tatiana opened the scoring with her first goal in the 17th minute, on an inside cut pass from sophomore Morgan Zigel-

sky. Nearly 10 minutes later, Tatiana scored again off a touch from Natalia, making it 2-0. The Colombian twins reversed roles for the next goal, as Tatiana found Natalia for her season’s second goal in the 38th minute. APSU would take a 4-0 halftime lead when Tatiana found the back of the net again, in the 43rd minute. Perkins would score the game’s final goal in the 46th minute. A shot by Murdoch, saved by Union, was deflected to the left, allowing Perkins to punch it in and set the final 5-0 margin. Western Kentucky tops Lady Govs The Lady Govs dropped their first match of the season to Western Kentucky at Morgan Brothers Field, dropping a 3-1 decision to move to 3-1 overall. Austin Peay remained winless in the all-time series against WKU, which now holds a 6-0 advantage. Western Kentucky led 2-0 when Joceline Quiceno found the back of the net in the 40th minute on a service by Kink. A WKU foul placed Kink just inside the half line when she played the ball to Quiceno, who was inside the box. Unfortunately for the Lady Govs, it was the only offense they could muster against the physical Lady Topper squad. In fact, the second half saw APSU manage only two shots, with none on goal. Austin Peay allowed Western Kentucky’s first goal in the 22nd minute and a handball inside the box set up a penalty kick which made it 2-0, in the 37th minute. Quiceno’s goal had APSU trailing 2-1 at the break, its season’s first halftime deficit. The Lady Toppers set the final margin with a 52nd-minute goal. Late goal gives Lady Govs comeback win over Belmont Two second-half goals were the difference in Austin Peay’s 2-1 win against 2012 OVC foe Belmont. Natalia Ariza scored the game winner in the 79th minute, bending a free kick past the Belmont keeper. The Bruins physical play proved costly when a foul just outside the box gave Austin Peay an indirect kick. Kink provided the first touch and Natalia punched it in. Belmont got on the board first when a well-played corner kick set up a header goal by Taylor Smith in the 33rd minute. That was the first half’s only goal as Belmont seemingly outplayed Austin Peay in the first 45 minutes. At the break, the Bruins had outshot the Lady Govs, 5-2, while also holding a 3-0 corner-kick advantage. But in the second half, APSU (4-1) came out recharged. As the match became more and more physical between the two in-state rivals, the Lady Govs began to maintain longer possessions and work towards the goal. Tatiana Ariza was taken down in the box and awarded a penalty kick in the 61st minute, with that goal equalizing the game. Shoaff was outstanding in the final 45 minutes as well. She made five of her six saves in the frame, including a pair of diving stops to keep Belmont in check.

AUSTIN PEAY WOMEN’S SOCCER 2012 Perkins, Ariza lead APSU over Troy After seeing its offensive production slowed during the homestand, Austin Peay opened the Port City Classic with a 2-1 win against Troy. The Lady Govs, who had 12 shots combined against Western Kentucky and Belmont, outshot the Trojans 18-11 en route to victory against the team that handed APSU its first loss during the 2010 campaign. Tatiana Ariza led Austin Peay with five shots, all on goal, while Perkins and Zigelsky each had three shots. Troy attempted to go the physical route with Austin Peay, but the Lady Govs continued to display a resilient attitude. Tatiana Ariza scored the game’s first goal - her season’s 10th - in the 23rd minute to give APSU a 1-0 lead. Zigelsky set it up with a touch pass left of the 15-yard box and Ariza finished with an upper-90 goal. Austin Peay’s defense held strong with Shoaff making a big stop off a Trojan corner in the 37th minute, leaving the Lady Govs with a 1-0 halftime lead. The second half opened with APSU firing a barrage of shots, packing the Trojans into the box early. Troy finally broke free in transition, but Andy Quiceno came up with the ball in midfield. Quiceno sparked the counter attack with a lead ball to Perkins, putting the target forward in a one-on-one with the Troy keeper. Perkins scored to make it 2-0, APSU, in the 57th minute. The two-goal lead would stand until Troy scored off a failed clear by the Lady Govs defense. Ruth Sutcliffe found the back of the net, setting the final 2-1 margin. Murdoch’s header only goal in loss to South Alabama Austin Peay came up short in a 2-1 loss to South Alabama to wrap up the Port City Classic in Mobile, Ala. The Lady govs scored the game’s first goal off a corner kick in the 25th minute. A shot by Tatiana Ariza set up the corner by Kink, who connected with Murdoch for a header to put the Lady Govs on top, 1-0. The equalizer came just 10 minutes later when South Alabama’s Jasmine Sanders hit a one-timer in the 35th minute that ricocheted off the post and past the keeper, tying the game at 1-1. Austin Peay’s defense came up short again in allowing the gamewinner with less than 10 minutes to play. As the Jaguars pushed down the field, a quick throw-in behind the defense set a Jaguar striker in position for goal in the 82nd minute. Perkins and Natalia Ariza each had shots on goal in the game’s final minutes, but it was not enough. Murdoch and Natalia Ariza each had four shots for APSU, while Shoaff made seven saves. Tatiana Ariza, Murdoch and Perkins were each All-Tournament selection. Five different Lady Govs score in shutout of Lipscomb Five different players scored as the Lady Govs battled to overcome last weekend’s lost at South Alabama and earn a 5-0 shutout win at Lipscomb. Austin Peay - the nation’s highest scoring team - ran like a well-oiled machine against the Lady Bisons, scoring two first-

half goals and finishing with three in final 45 minutes. Murdoch scored the game’s first goal, from sophomore Tatiana Ariza, on a set piece inside the box. The next goal came in the 19th minute off a corner kick by Osborn. It was Kink finding the back of the net for her season’s first goal. It took until the 76th minute for Austin Peay to score again and this time it was Tatiana Ariza, in a one-on-one situation, beating the Lipscomb keeper. It was Ariza’s 11th goal, matching her 2010 season total. The twin connection paid off in the 80th minute when Andy Quiceno found her sister Joceline with a cross into the box to make it 4-0, Austin Peay. Freshman Bianca Melito scored the game’s final goal in the 89th minute. Not only was Austin Peay’s offense firing on all cylinders, the defense limited Lipscomb to only four shots with one on goal. The Lady Govs, meanwhile, totaled 22 shots - the most since having 38 shots against Alabama A&M in the season opener. Xavier hands Austin Peay first shutout in 2011 The Lady Govs dropped a 1-0, double-overtime affair to Xavier to end the non-conference portion of the schedule. Not only was it the Lady Govs first extra-time game this season, it also was the first time APSU has been shutout since Oct. 15, 2010 vs. Morehead State ending a streak of 16 straight games with a goal. Xavier’s Taylor Dearbaugh scored the gamewinner in the first minute of the second overtime period on a shot from just inside the 15-yard box. Shoaff made seven saves on the day for the Lady Govs. Austin Peay played the 100-minute contest without making substitution, but seemingly picked up steam in the second half. After all, the Musketeers were coming off a double-overtime win against Eastern Kentucky and APSU was playing on two days rest after a match at Lipscomb. In the second half, the Lady Govs put four shots on goal only to see Xavier keeper Katie Markesbery make four stops. The Lady Govs managed some close range attempts as well, but the Musketeer defense was well-positioned each time, coming up with a pair of game-saving blocked shots in the final second of the first overtime. Breakdowns lead to OVC-opening loss against SEMO On the opening night of OVC soccer, conference-wide, the Lady Govs found themselves searching for offense against a Southeast Missouri team that entered the match having allowed only 12 goals all season. Austin Peay managed to outshoot the Redhawks, but struggled to find the back of the net in a 3-1 loss. Southeast Missouri scored first, in the 10th minute, after controlling possession for much of the game’s first period. Austin Peay was able to swing momentum late in the half when Osborn’s corner kick was scored by Zigelsky, tying the game at 1-1. Even with the momentum, the Lady Govs failed to contain Southeast Missouri’s speedy forward Erin Shulman. In the 50th minute, Shulman bent a left-to-right ball past the APSU

19

AUSTIN PEAY WOMEN’S SOCCER 2012 keeper to make it 2-1. Shulman got underneath to score a rebound off a corner two minutes later to make it 3-1. Austin Peay played hard, but couldn’t overcome the Redhawk’s two-goal lead. In fact, an APSU goal was wiped off in the 85th minute after keeper interference was called against the Lady Govs. Missed opportunities cost Lady Govs against UT Martin UT Martin took an early 1-0 lead on a header by Alyssa Curtis and didn’t let up, handing the Lady Govs a second straight OVC loss. A mere glance at the box score shows that Austin Peay outplayed the UT Martin in almost every statistical category. However, for the Lady Govs, it boiled down to failed execution inside the 15-yard box. The Lady Govs had 12 shots in the match, but managed to put only two on goal - a far cry from the offensive powerhouse they looked to be during non-conference action. UT Martin, meanwhile, was efficient with its five shots, putting four on goal and scoring twice. The Skyhawks repeatedly found seams in the defense and capitalized. Austin Peay had opportunities throughout the game, but were unable to find the back of the net. In the first half, the Lady Govs had four corner kicks which resulted in failed attacks. Andy Quiceno had a clean shot attempt go wide in the 14th minute and moments later, Zigelsky had a one-time rocket off the post. Ariza scores twice, Lady Govs down Murray State A pair of second-half goals by Tatiana Ariza fueled a 2-1, comeback win, by Austin Peay against Murray State. With the score tied, 1-1, Austin Peay established an attack directly in front of the Murray State goal. The Racer’s physical play caught up with them as Joceline Quiceno was pulled down in the box with a clean look at the goal. The foul gave way to Ariza’s game-winning penalty kick in the 89th minute. Ariza scored the Lady Govs’ first goal in the 78th minute when she drew a foul inside the penalty box. The win ended a three-game skid by the Lady Govs and also was their first OVC win. Murray State remains winless in league play. Murray State led, 1-0, at the half after Julie Mooney scored in the game’s fifth minute. Over the past three games, Austin Peay had struggled with allowing early goals, but this time the Lady Govs were able to overcome. After going three games without goal, Ariza posted her season’s fourth multi-goal game. Ariza leads the Lady Govs with 13 goals, having scored in every Austin Peay win this season. Lady Govs play JSU to a draw For the fourth time in nine all-time meetings, the Lady Govs and Jacksonville State played to a draw, with a late Austin Peay goal knotting the game at one and pushing the contest into overtime. Austin Peay’s offense was on the brink most of the night, managing 24 shots and putting 13 on goal. Natalia Ariza accounted for eight shots, while Andy Quiceno and Perkins had

20

three and two shots, respectively. Jacksonville State got on the board first when Kaitlyn Gregory was able to score a header from a corner kick in the 32nd minute. Austin Peay trailed at the break and needed until late in the second half to find the equalizer. With just less than 20 minutes left in the game, the Lady Govs mounted a substantial attack. It started with a corner kick by Kink. Austin Peay increased its pressure and it didn’t take long for Tatiana Ariza to find Perkins for 78th-minute goal. In the 20 extra minutes, Jacksonville State outshot the Lady Govs 3-2, but neither team could produce the game winner. Overtime loss at Tennessee Tech looms large A 1-0 overtime loss at Tennessee Tech dropped the Lady Govs to 1-2-1 in OVC play and dealt a significant blow to the teams aspirations of OVC tournament play, dropping them to ninth with four matches to play. After going into overtime at Jacksonville State, the Lady Govs found themselves in extra time again against the Golden Eagles. Credit the Tennessee Tech defense, making due even with the Lady Govs outshooting them 15-10 for the match. Austin Peay had seven shots in each half, but managed only one in overtime. Tennessee Tech, meanwhile, generated two shots in the extra period. The game-winner came off a corner kick in the 98th minute with Leigh Heffner finding the back of the net with a header. Austin Peay came out of each half aggressive, forcing five corner kicks in the game’s first 25 minutes and three corners in the first 15 minutes of the second half. From that point, the Golden Eagles were able to contain the Lady Govs outside the penalty area. Claire Pultz led Austin Peay with two shots on goal, while Perkins, Kink and Osborn each had one shot on goal. Osborn, the Lady Govs outside back, led the Lady Govs with three shots. Andy Quiceno and Tatiana Ariza had two shots each. Ariza’s help APSU down SIU Edwardsville The Lady Govs picked up an important 2-0 win against SIU Edwardsville thanks in large part to the Ariza twins, which kept them in the OVC race. Natalia Ariza blasted the game-winner in the 26th minute, giving APSU a 1-0 lead. The Lady Govs were assembling in front of the Cougar goal when Ariza came up with the deflected ball about 15-yards out and bent it past the diving keeper. Playing with a lead, the Lady Govs were able to become more aggressive in the midfield and forced SIU Edwardsville to take chances in the open field. Austin Peay’s defense, led by junior Renny Robinson and Van Wagner in the middle along with Osborn and Kink on the outside, held SIUE to only six shots in the game. Austin Peay scored the second goal when Andy Quiceno was pulled down in the box, setting up the penalty kick. Tatiana Ariza scored the penalty kick in the 82nd-minute for the insurance goal.

AUSTIN PEAY WOMEN’S SOCCER 2012 Double overtime win keeps Lady Govs in mix for postseason Tatiana Ariza scored the gamewinner in the 103rd minute giving Austin Peay women’s soccer team a 1-0, double-overtime, win against Eastern Illinois. The win kept Austin Peay in the hunt for its second straight postseason tournament as it currently sits in a tie for fifth with UT Martin. Perkins created the attack that resulted in Ariza’s gamewinner. The junior took the ball at midfield on a run down the center and passed off to Ariza on a diagonal cut from the right side. Ariza made one touch and fired across the keeper to win it for the Lady Govs. Credit the Lady Govs defense for hanging on, despite allowing four shots in the second overtime period. Shoaff made six of her seven saves after halftime. The Lady Govs midfield did the dirty work in the first half, preventing the Panthers any decent opportunites by controlling the ball in the center. It wasn’t until the 29th minute did EIU manager its first shot. Shoaff earned OVC Keeper of the Week honors for her efforts against EIU and SIU Edwardsville. The Panthers used their depth to create more second-half chances, but the Lady Govs back line denied each time. Shoaff played strong in net while Van Wagner and Robinson covered the middle of the field. The Panthers made a late run, putting up four shots in the final 10 minutes of regulation, but to no avail. Late EKU goal sinks Lady Govs Austin Peay allowed a late-game goal at Eastern Kentucky to fall into a must-win situation in their regular season finale. For the second-straight OVC game, the Colonels benefitted from an own goal to take an early lead. In the 37th minute, the ball deflected off an Austin Peay defender, into the Lady Govs net , to give Eastern Kentucky a 1-0 lead. The Lady Govs kept composure and were able to equalize soon after. Joceline Quiceno, who made her return from injury after missing three games, scored a 44th-minute goal on a pass from Natalia Ariza. With a 1-1 game heading into the final minutes, the Lady Govs came up short on an opportunity in the 78th minute when Tatiana Ariza’s shot was blocked. The ensuing corner kick was cleared out, erasing Austin Peay’s chance to tie the game. Eastern Kentucky scored the gamewinner in the 85th minute, on a rebounded shot fired into the upper quadrant. The Colonels outshot Austin Peay, 20-8, for the game, holding Tatiana Ariza to only one attempt. Shoaff made seven saves for the Lady Govs.

This game had different implications with both teams battling to get into the postseason. The Lady Govs found their backs against the wall early as the Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the fifth minute on a header by Jillian Birchmeier. Brittany Kiracofe’s header in the 21st minute made a 2-0. Tatiana Ariza cut the margin to one goal when she lined up for a penalty kick in the 29th minute, making 2-1. The Lady Govs momentum didn’t last long as Morehead would go on to score two more goals to take a 4-1 lead into halftime. In the second half, Morehead State scored three more goals before Natalia Ariza’s 74th-minute goal. Ariza beat two defenders and the keeper to set the final margin. For Austin Peay, it was the only time this season to lose when scoring at least two goals. The Lady Govs managed only eight shots on the day, including two each by Murdoch and Joceline Quiceno. Morehead State fired up 16 shots on the day, led by Birchmeier and Kiracofe. It was the fifth time of the final six games for the Lady Govs to allow 10 or more shots to an opponent. Ariza’s, Perkins named All-OVC Tatiana Ariza was named first-team All-Ohio Valley Conference by the league’s coaches and sports information directors. Emily Perkins and Natalia Ariza earned second-team honors, while Perkins also was named to the All-Newcomer team. Tatiana Ariza was without a doubt the league’s most dynamic offensive player in scoring 16 goals and recording seven assists - both OVC bests - en route to a league-best 39 points. In OVC play, she was met by multiple defenders on almost every occasion and still managed to score five goals, which tied for the OVC best. Her 11 points in OVC play tied for second-most. In receiving first-team All-OVC honors for the second-straight season, Tatiana Ariza also climbed the OVC’s active career leaderboard. Her 66 points, 27 goals and 10 gamewinners all top the active leaderboard. She also ranks in the top five in shots and shots on goal. Natalia Ariza put her versatility on display as she was used in a utility position in 2011. She started the season as a midfielder, but when injuries depleted the Lady Govs defense Natalia Ariza moved to back line. During conference play, she was used up front as well, to give the Lady Govs another scoring threat down the stretch. Natalia scored five goals and had four assists on the season. Perkins joined the Lady Govs this season and finished as the team’s second-leading goal scorer with seven goals and one assist. An Ole Miss transfer, Perkins brought a combination of deceptive speed and the ability to hold off defenders as Austin Peay’s target forward.

Lady Govs eliminated with loss at Morehead State The Lady Govs suffered a season-ending, 7-2, loss at Morehead State which led to the Lady Govs elimination from the Ohio Valley Conference tournament field. For the second consecutive season, Morehead State has helped bring Austin Peay’s soccer season to an end. Last year, however, it was a 2-1 defeat in the OVC Tournament championship game.
