DR. DOUG MOLNAR Head Coach Ninth Year In rebuilding the Austin Peay track and field and cross country programs, Dr. Doug Molnar’s dedication and relentlessness has not gone unnoticed. With more than a decade of Division I coaching experience and more than 20 years of participation in college athletics, Molnar has set a standard on which to build for his ninth season as head coach. Much of Molnar’s success can be attributed to his team’s development in the field events. Pole vaulter Carrie Burggraf was named the 2010 Indoor Field Athlete of the Year and jumper Leigha Tolliver was named Indoor Freshman of the Year. Burggraf was a three-time indoor and two-time outdoor pole vault champion, while teammate Molly Bartkiewicz earned the indoor and outdoor pole vault crown in 2007. However, in recent years Molnar has built the track program to rival the accomplishments of his field athletes. Chantelle Grey (800m, 2012-13) and Breigh Jones (400m, 2013) have each represented Austin Peay at the NCAA East Preliminary Round the past two seasons. Jones parlayed a successful freshman season into a spot on the US Junior Pan American team in 2013. Those accomplishments were a result of Molnar’s dedication to improve a program that was coming off struggling times prior to his arrival. The 2009-10 season saw a pair of fourth-place finishes at the indoor and outdoor championships, as well as a fifth-place men’s cross country finish and a sixth-place women’s cross country finish. Each of those represented the best finishes during Molnar’s tenure. A former distance runner, Molnar came to Austin Peay from Texas-Pan American where he led the cross country squads to a top-10 regional finish in 2003. His women’s program also recorded its best finish at an NCAA regional since the mid-1980s. In addition, he coached the program’s first All-American in 2002. A native of Lorain, Ohio, Molnar excelled as an allstate selection in track and field at Admiral King High School. Following his prep career, he put his speed to work as a four-year runner at West Virginia, serving as a team captain his junior and senior year. Molnar graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1986 and remained in Morgantown another year, earning his master’s in business administration. Molnar continued his education and launched his coaching career at Kent State. As a graduate assistant,

he worked with men and women’s distance runners while completing his second post-graduate degree – a master’s of arts in physical education. He graduated in 1992 and spent a year as a volunteer coach at Oberlin College before returning to serve as Kent State’s men’s cross country head coach while assisting with men and women’s track and field. In his second stint with Kent State, Molnar asserted himself. He assisted with a team that finished 20th at the 1995 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships and coached six conference champions and two relay teams which were ranked among the top 10 by Track and Field News. After several successful seasons at Kent State, Molnar again decided to further his education and his coaching experience at Tennessee. He earned a doctorate in educational administration and cultural studies, while serving two seasons as a volunteer assistant to men’s track and field and interim head coach for the Lady Vols cross country team. During his tenure, the Volunteers won a 2001 national title, claimed runner-up honors in 2002, a berth in the 2002 NCAA Cross Country Championships and the 2002 Southeastern Conference title. Under Molnar’s tutelage, Austin Peay has seen eight indoor and nine outdoor school records fall. Included among those are a quartet of broken records from 2013: Xiamar Richards’ indoor 5000m run (17:44.18), Jones’ outdoor 400m (53.75), Richards’ outdoor 5000m run (16:34.94) and Jasmine Foster’s hammer throw (44.23m) mark. Molnar resides in Clarksville with his wife, Kim, and her children Cameron (17), Sydney (15) and Tyler (13). Molnar’s daughter, Alyssa (24), was a distance runner for the Lady Govs.

JAMES JENKINS

Assistant Coach Third Year

Assistant Coach Second Year

In an effort to raise the level of Austin Peay’s track and field program, head coach Doug Molnar turned to Valerie Brown, a 2009 NCAA Indoor All-American, as an assistant coach, Sept. 2011. Brown’s track and field success came at Western Kentucky where she capped an impressive career with a third-place finish at the 2009 NCAA Indoor Championships. In doing so, she became only the second indoor All-American in Hilltopper history and set the program’s indoor 400-meter record. Her determination is evident in Brown’s climb to the top of the NCAA track and field ranks. She began her collegiate career at Bevill State Community College in Hamilton, Ala., where she was sprinter and also ran the relays. Bevill State would finish fifth at the 2006 NJCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships and Brown parlayed her performance into a scholarship at WKU. While she developed her 400-meter dash, Brown made her way early on in the 1600- and 400-meter relays, where she was twice a Sun Belt Conference Champion in 2007 and 2008. In fact, in 2008 the Lady Toppers 1600-meter relay team ranked 16th nationally after earning a fourth-place finish at the Mideast Regional. Her individual prowess became more apparent that season as well, when she won the 400-meter dash and was runner up in the 200-meter dash. The climb to the 2009 NCAA Indoor Championships was prefaced by Brown being named the Sun Belt’s 2009 Most Outstanding Female Track Athlete after winning the 200- and 400-meter dash at the Sun Belt Indoor Track and Field Championships. Then at the NCAA tournament - prior to her monumental third-place finish - Brown ran a school-record 52.74 400-meter dash in the semifinals. Brown recently completed her master’s degree at Western Kentucky in recreation and sport administration. She was a WKU graduate in 2009.

James Jenkins joined the Govs staff in Fall 2012. He will coach the Govs in his specialty, the jumps. Jenkins pedigree is impeccable following an elite collegiate career that spanned the junior college, NAIA and NCAA levels. In 2003, Jenkins was a National Junior College All-American at Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College, placing fourth during indoor season and winning silver in the triple jump during outdoor. In 2004, Jenkins moved on to NAIA power Lindenwood College. He was an individual National Champion in the triple jump in 2004 (indoor) and 2006 (indoor and outdoor) with a career-long of 15.94m. During his time at Lindenwood, he earned six All-American honors. Jenkins capped his collegiate career at Arkansas State in 2007. He took fourth-place at the 2007 NCAA Outdoor Championships in the triple jump with a 16.06m leap, earning Arkansas State’s first outdoor All-American honor in the triple jump since 1989. Twice, Jenkins competed at the USATF Nationals, finishing 11th in the triple jump in 2006 and eighth in 2007 with a 15.88m leap. Jenkins joined the HPC Elite team in the winter of 2008. In his first meet competing as a member, he jumped 15.65m in the triple jump to place second at the Vanderbilt Invitational. Later in 2008, Jenkins won the triple jump at the USATF High Performance Invite at BYU and jumped 16.28m in the qualification round to make the finals of the triple jump at the Olympic Trials. He eventually finished 12th in the 2008 Olympic trials triple jump. In 2009, Jenkins relocated to Olympic Training Center. The move was good for Jenkins, who finished third in the triple jump at the 2009 USA Track & Field Nationals with a 16.79m leap. As a youth, Jenkins was an all-around athlete who was ranked in the Rivals Top 100 Preps in basketball, ranked in DyeStat’s Top 50 in triple jump and high jump and won gold and silver in the Missouri State High School championships in triple jump and long jump respectively.

Austin Peay was just behind another Ohio Valley Conference foe in UT Martin, which finished fifth with 112 points. Host Chattanooga won the event with a 38-point aggregate score. Rejman’s 15:35.54 mark set an Austin Peay men’s five-kilometer record. He placed 15th overall, a bit off from his top-10 finish in the Sept. 6 race, but his time was nearly 40 seconds better than his previous attempt at Moccasin Bend. Hamm was the only other Gov in the top-30. The Brentwood native placed 24th with a 16:05.36 mark, bettering his Sept. 6 outing by 35 seconds. Richards was 18th out of 157 runners in the women’s five-kilometer event, pacing the Lady Gov pack by more than 30 seconds. She’s now finished as the top Lady Gov finisher in every event dating back the end of 2010. A trio of seniors – Kendra Kirksey (19:22.24), Kim Dominguez (19:32.98) and Chantelle Grey (19:38.21) – backed up Richard’s strong performance with good runs of their own. Dominguez proved herself ready to take on a big role for the Lady Govs after transferring from Western Kentucky. Freshman Molly Jordan rounded out the Lady Govs scoring five, finishing 52nd with a 20:21.15 mark. Freshman Jessica Gray (20:55.39, 72nd), sophomore Alexis Eldridge (21:02.98, 81st) and freshman Unjala Lester (22:22.72, 108th) rounded out the runners for the Lady Govs.

LADY GOVS VICTORIOUS AT EARL JACOBY MEMORIAL HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – Buoyed by senior Richards’ second consecutive runner-up finish and three other top-10 finishes, Austin Peay took a big step forward at the Fleet Feet Sports/Earl Jacoby Memorial at Sharon Johnston Park, hosted by Alabama-Huntsville. Richards’ 18:02.9 mark placed her behind only Evansville’s Kelby Jenkins, a 2012 NCAA Cross Country Championship participant. She led the Lady Govs to victory over the Purple Aces in the Division I portion of the standings in the event. A trio of seniors – Grey (18:55.5, fourth), Dominguez (18:58.0, fifth) and Kirksey (19:00.7, sixth) – also found homes in the top-10 overall; they were the third, fourth and fifth finishers, respectively, on the Division I lists.

Grey placed inside the top 20 for the third time this season. She finished 20th overall and 11th among Division I runners with an 18:58.72 mark. Dominguez was hot on Grey’s heels with a 22nd-place, 19:01.49 mark. Kirksey was not far behind her with a 19:14.76, good for 39th. Gray rounded out the counting scores for Austin Peay, finishing 149th with a 20:16.57 mark. Jordan, who had been the Lady Govs No. 5 finisher in each of the first three races, suffered a hip injury early in the race and finished 304th (22:51.25).

FINAL TUNE_UP A SUCCESS FOR LADY GOVS CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Two Austin Peay runners finished in the top10 and Molly Jordan set an APSU record in the two-mile run at the Front Runner Invitational, hosted by Chattanooga at Moccasin Bend Race Course. Richards narrowly missed her fourth consecutive runner-up finish, placing third with a 10:57.11 mark that crushed her previous school record in the two-mile by better than 25 seconds. She was less than a second behind MTSU’s Lucy Kapkiai in the battle for second place. Hot on Richards’ heels was Grey, who finished sixth overall with an 11:25.26 mark that improved her mark from the Lady Govs last race at Moccasin Bend, the Sept. 6 Front Runner Invitational, by nearly 20 seconds. Kirksey (13th, 11:46.38) and Jordan (18th, 11:56.05) also earned top-20 finishes for the Lady Govs. Jordan’s mark breaks her freshman school-record in the two-mile event by more than 14 seconds. Dominguez (21st, 12:00.65) and Gray (22nd, 12:04.76) battled for the final scoring position on the day, with Dominguez taking the Lady Govs fifth spot. Eldridge (41st, 12:41.79) and Lester (50th, 13:07.31) rounded out the runners for the Lady Govs.

RICHARDS EARNS FIRST-TEAM ALL-OVC AT CHAMPIONSHIPS MOREHEAD, Ky. – Richards finally got her elusive first-team All-OVC finish, leading Austin Peay to its best finish in the Ohio Valley Conference Women’s Cross Country Championships since 2010. The Lady Govs finished sixth as a squad in the 2013 running at Eagle Trace Golf Course.

RICHARDS RUNNER UP AGAIN IN LOUISVILLE

Richards finished fifth overall, 25 seconds behind Eastern Kentucky’s Una Britton, the individual champion, with an 18:07.95 run in the eight-kilometer race. Her fifth-place finish was the best by a Lady Gov since Bertha Castillo’s fourth-place showing in the 2008 event, which was also the last time an Austin Peay runner earned first-team all-conference honors. With her second-team honors in 2011 and 2012, Richards becomes Austin Peay’s first-ever threetime all-OVC honoree.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Led by Richards’ third consecutive runner-up finish, Austin Peay finished fourth overall in the women’s five-kilometer blue race at the Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic, hosted by Louisville at E.P. ‘Tom’ Sawyer State Park.

In her final OVC Championship, Grey placed 33rd overall with a 19:28.68 mark. Dominguez, in her first (and also final) OVC Championship, was right behind Grey with a 35th-place, 19:32.23 mark.

Jordan continued to solidify the No. 5 spot on the Lady Govs order. She finished 14th with a 19:28.7 mark, good for ninth among the D1 one runners.

LADY GOVS The Lady Govs finished fourth out of 51 schools, a big jump from last season’s 39th-place finish. Richards, who was 82nd last season, moved up 80 spots for her third runner-up finish in 2013, joining her second-place results at the Fleet Feet Sports Earl Jacoby Memorial in Huntsville (Sept. 14) and the Powerade Invitational in Chattanooga (Sept. 6).

2013-14 AUSTIN PEAY TRACK AND FIELD & CROSS COUNTRY MEDIA GUIDE

THE OHIO VALLEY CONFERENCE Entering its 64th year, the Ohio Valley Conference continues to build on the success that has made it the nation’s eighth-oldest NCAA Division I conference. In May 2011 the Conference expanded for the second time in four years, adding Belmont which will begin competition in the 2012-13 academic year. The addition of Belmont will give the OVC 12 members, the most the league has had at one time in its illustrious history. The move added a second team in the city of Nashville and was the first addition to the league since SIU Edwardsville joined in 2008. SIUE will begin regular season competition this season and be eligible for postseason the same year Belmont joins the league. The OVC sponsors the following sports: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis and track for men, and basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and volleyball
