THIS IS AUSTIN PEAY STATE UNIVERSITY

A

ustin Peay State University is a comprehensive, stateassisted university with a distinguished tradition in liberal and professional education. The institution is named in honor of Austin Peay, Tennessee’s governor from 1924 until 1927, the year APSU was founded. The university is located in Clarksville, Tenn., just 45 minutes northwest of Tennessee’s capital, Nashville, on Interstate 24. One of the South’s most historic cities, Clarksville also is Tennessee’s third-fastest growing city behind only Memphis and Nashville. Situated on gently rolling terrain near picturesque downtown Clarksville, Austin Peay’s main campus consists of 68 buildings on 169 acres. The classical Georgian architecture of the Austin Peay campus is combined with newer buildings. This blend provides a link with the past while reflecting the academic excellence and dignity of an institution of higher learning. The newest building additions to the main campus are the Foy Fitness and Recreation Center, Sundquist Science Complex and the new Morgan University Center, each opening for use since 2001. The $11-million Foy Center, features a rock-climbing wall and 10,000 square feet of fitness space and other amenities for the student body. The Sundquist Complex is one of the South’s premier science education facilities and represents the largest capital appropriation ever in Tennessee for a single classroom building. The Morgan University Center is located in the heart of the campus and features a cybercafe, meeting rooms, a food court, coffee shop, ballroom and lounges for Austin Peay students. Recently, Austin Peay has expanded its on-campus housing. A new high rise on Castle Heights houses more than 400 students, while three new dormitories are being developed and are tentatively scheduled to be completed for Fall 2013. Austin Peay’s campus has been the site of seven educational institutions since 1806. The campus was occupied by Southwestern for 50 years until 1925 when the school moved to Memphis. Austin Peay was founded two years later as a two-year normal school to train teachers for the region. Austin Peay has grown over the years to take its place among the finest mid-sized four-year universities in the nation. Austin Peay Normal School became a four-year college in 1941-42, and university status was conferred Sept. 1, 1967. Austin Peay State University currently enrolls more than 10,000 students from every region of Tennessee, most of the 50 states and several foreign countries. Austin Peay offers more than 50 majors in associate, bachelor’s, master’s and education specialist’s degrees with additional areas of concentration. Courses are offered in arts and sciences, business, education, engineering technology, nursing and human services. Graduate studies also are offered in several areas. In addition, numerous online courses are offered each semester. A state leader in public service, Austin Peay State University has more than 750 employees. Engaged in the most modern teaching techniques and research are nearly 280 full-time faculty members, 90 percent of whom hold the earned doctorate or appropriate terminal degrees in their disciplines.

GOVERNORS TENNIS FACILITIES The Governors Tennis Center has been a part of Austin Peay athletics and the Clarksville community for nearly two decades. When the idea was broached to build an indoor tennis center on the APSU campus, the advantages were obvious for APSU students, the Governors and Lady Govs tennis programs and the local tennis community. The indoor facility literally became a tennis “center” in northwest Tennessee. The site of Clarksville’s first indoor tennis center is located across the street from Governors Stadium and next to the stadium parking lot. It consists of four lighted courts. Dressing facilities for both men and women are provided. The University actively seeks memberships from families, individuals and corporations. Students do not have to pay a membership fee but are charged a reduced court-time fee. Combined with the recently renovated Governors Tennis Courts, Austin Peay possesses debatably the Ohio Valley Conference’s finest tennis facilities.

GOVERNORS TENNIS CENTER The Governors Tennis Center not only provides protection from the elements, but also allows for continous teaching and instruction by the Austin Peay coaching staff.

AUSTIN PEAY TENNIS COURTS The recently resurfaced Austin Peay tennis courts remain the finest outdoor tennis courts in the area. Consisting of eight lighted courts, the facility sits adjacent to the Foy Fitness and Recreation Center. The courts have new windscreens and bleacher seating, along with a practice wall.

ROSS BROWN HEAD COACH 2nd Season Ross Brown, who has 19 years of college head-coaching experience, is in his second season at the helm of the Austin Peay men and women’s tennis programs. Brown’s first season in Clarksville was a huge success. In addition to taking the women’s team back to the OVC Tournament, Brown led the men’s squad to its first OVC Championship since 1974 and its first NCAA Tournament berth. His charges earned four all-OVC honors, including three first-team berths (Sean Bailey, Jasmin Ademovic, Dimitar Ristovski). Brown served as men’s head coach at Evansville from 19912001 before moving to become Southern Indiana men’s coach from 2001-08. He left the coaching profession after the 2008 season to serve as Fujairah Tennis and Country Club general manager in United Arab Emirates for two and a half years.

As a college head coach, Brown led Southern Indiana to the 2005 Great Lakes Valley Conference tennis championship with a 23-6 record, which earned him conference Coach of the Year accolades. He also coached Joe Epkey to the Division II National Championship match. During his Evansville career, Brown’s teams recorded more than 100 victories. He was named the 1994 Midwest College Coach of the Year. In his time at Fujairah Tennis and Country Club he helped expand membership from 105 to 805. He also served as Director of the Maktoum Championships, the second largest sporting event during Ramadan in the U.A. E. He also has served as co-owner and head professional at Advantage Court and Fitness in Evansville from 1997-2005. Prior to that, he served as Competitive Edge and Junior Camp Director at the John Newcomb Tennis Ranch in Australia back in the mid-1980s. His college coaching background has been on the men’s side, but Brown has coached several junior women tennis players at both Fujairah and Advantage, in particular Stephanie Hazlett, who won five national junior United States Tennis Association titles and later played at Florida. He also coached Indiana and Kentucky High School champions. Brown is a member of the Paris Junior College Hall of Fame and received the prestigious McLemore Cup (given to the most valuable player of all sports at PCJ) in 1979. In addition his two daughters, Bayley (Lewis College) and Brittany (Kansas/Evansville) went on to play college tennis.

MARIA SORBELLO

BOB FAIRES

ASSISTANT COACH 2nd Season

Tennis Center Manager

Maria Sorbello joined head coach Ross Brown’s staff for the 2013 season as an assistant coach. She assists with both the Govs and Lady Govs tennis teams.

Bob Faires brings more than 35 years of administrative experience to the table, serving as the Tennis Center Manager for his 10th year.

Sorbello graduated from Tennessee in 2011 with a degree in communications. She was a four-year member of the Lady Vols tennis team, including an Elite 8 appearance in 2010. She was an All-Southeastern Conference second-team selection in 2010 and 2011, ranking 13th in the final 2010 ITA doubles poll and reaching as high as 38th in the ITA singles rankings. She and Brynn Boren captured the Ohio Valley Regional doubles championship in 2010.

Faires joined Austin Peay’s staff in October 2004 and currently manages the Governors Indoor Center and oversees the operation and maintenance for the indoor and outdoor courts. He works extensively in promoting APSU tennis activities through on-campus leagues, clinics and scheduling lessons.

A native of Mackay, Australia, Sorbello won the Australian School Girls Singles Championship three years in a row (2004-06), the only person to win the championship three straight times. Sorbello previously coached at Fancutts Tennis Academy in Brisbane, Australia and volunteered at the Knoxville Racquet Club while a member of the Lady Vols.

A combat-wounded veteran, Faires was a helicopter pilot for the Army Reserves during the Vietnam War. Upon retirement from the Army Reserves, Faires worked more than 35 years as a civilian for the Army Continuing Education System. In fact, he later retired as the director of Fort Campbell’s Army Education Center. While at Fort Campbell, he worked closely in maintaining relationships with Austin Peay, Murray State, Embry Riddle Aeronautical, Hopkinsville Community College and City Colleges of Chicago. He served on Austin Peay President Sherry Hoppe’s President’s Cabinet, as he facilitated Austin Peay degree programs at Fort Campbell. His connections to Austin Peay and his love for tennis made Faires a perfect fit with the Govs and Lady Govs tennis programs. Faires assists head coach Ross Brown in a variety of capacities, including overseeing the Tennis Center budget, coordinating matches and tournaments, and organizing team travel. Faires is a long-time tennis player, who at one time, was ranked by the USTA in Tennessee’s 55-59 age group. Faires, with his wife Mickie, a retired elementary school teacher, celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary in 2011.

2012-13 APSU TENNIS HEADLINES GOVS WIN FIRST OVC TITLE SINCE 1974 PADUCAH, Ky. – For the first time since 1974, Austin Peay State University men’s tennis team has earned the right to call itself Ohio Valley Conference Champion. The Govs defeated Belmont, 4-1, in the finals of the OVC Tournament Championship at Heflin Tennis Center, April 21, to secure the second conference title in program history. The win also earned the Govs a spot in next month’s NCAA Tournament, May 10-12. Austin Peay (17-3) defeated the Bruins for the second time in three weeks, ending Belmont’s first season in the OVC at 9-14 and runner-up in the conference championship. The Govs opened the day by taking the doubles point in emphatic fashion. After falling behind two sets, senior Sean Bailey and junior Jasmin Ademovic rallied back for an 8-6 win at No. 1, while senior John Storie and sophomore Aleksas Tverijonas jumped out to a huge lead and cruised to a comfortable 8-3 victory. Bailey and Ademovic are now 14-3 as a doubles pair in 2013. Sophomore Aleksas Tverijonas struck the first blow in singles play. The Lithuanian defeated Bruno Silva, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 4 singles to put the Govs ahead 2-0. Tverijonas’ magical spring season now puts him at 18-1. The Govs suffered a loss when junior Jasmin Ademovic fell to former Gov Henrique Norbiato, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 2 singles, but almost immediately responded with a victory from senior John Storie. The Johnson City, Tenn., native gave the Govs a cushion with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Henrik Claesson at No. 5 singles, and his four-match win streak is currently the Govs longest. That put the onus on sophomore Dimitar Ristovski to bring home the title. The Macedonian, who saw his 16-match win streak come to an end in Saturday’s loss to Eastern Kentucky, got his redemption and then some with a championship-clinching 6-4, 7-5 victory over the Bruins Fernando Mussolini at No. 3 singles. FOUR GOVS EARN ALL-OVC HONORS PADUCAH, Ky. – For the second year in a row, four Austin Peay State University men’s tennis players have earned All-Ohio Valley Conference honors. The conference announced their honors at the annual awards banquet prior to the OVC Tennis Tournament Championship. Bailey, Ademovic and Ristovski earned first-team honors, as voted by the conference coaches. tverijonas claimed a spot on the second team. It’s the second time in three years the Govs have placed three on the first team, with Ademovic, Bailey and Henrique Norbiato earning first-team honors in 2011. That quartet helped the Govs to one of the program’s best seasons, earning a 15-3 record and a runner-up finish in the OVC during the regular season. Austin Peay also embarked on a school-record 14-match winning streak from Feb. 2 through April 13.

Bailey, last season’s OVC Men’s Player of the Year, has enjoyed another sterling season in 2013. The Canadian went 19-4 overall, including a 13-3 dual record and an 8-1 mark in OVC play. He and Ademovic formed a formidable duo at No. 1 doubles, going 12-3 overall. With this season’s honor, Bailey becomes Austin Peay’s first four-time all-conference honoree in men’s tennis. He’s the first OVC player to earn all-conference accolades during each year of his career since Eastern Kentucky’s Alex Das (2008-11). Ademovic could join Bailey as a four-timer next year; the Bosnian earned his third consecutive first-team nod after a 14-4 season that saw him post an 11-3 mark at No. 2 singles. For his career, Ademovic is now an exemplary 41-14 in dual play, including a 20-2 mark against OVC opponents. A first-timer on the All-OVC first team after earning all-conference secondteam consideration as a freshman, Ristovski entered the OVC Tournament as the hottest player in the field. The Macedonian won a schoolrecord 16 consecutive matches dating back to Feb. 2 and sports a 16-2 mark in dual play. He and sophomore Iago Seffrin own a 9-3 mark as the No. 2 singles pair, including 6-1 against the OVC. Ristovski’s 16-match win streak recently eclipsed the 15-match streak Tverijonas opened the season with. The Lithuanian is 16-1 on the season, with his lone loss coming against Tennessee Tech last weekend. He’s now earned second-team all-conference honors twice to open his Austin Peay career. GOVS CLAIM 14TH STRAIGHT WIN AGAINST BELMONT CLARKSVILLE – The wins rolled in for Austin Peay State University men’s tennis team, which won its 14th straight match in convincing fashion, 6-1, April 7, against Belmont at the Austin Peay Tennis Courts. Shuffling around its top lines, junior Jasmin Ademovic played No. 1 against Renato Antun, pulling off a 6-3, 6-1 victory. Senior Sean Bailey faced former Gov Henrique Norbiato at No. 2, earning a convincing 6-0, 6-2 win. The streaks continued for sophomores Dimitar Ristovski and Aleksas Tverijonas, who won their 14th and 15th consecutive matches, respectively. Ristovski defeated Fernando Mussolini in three sets, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, at No. 3 singles, while Tverijonas remained undefeated with a 6-1, 6-4, No. 4 singles victory over Bruno Silva. Sophomore Iago Seffrin took the Govs other singles victory, defeating Henrik Claesson, 7-5, 6-2 at No. 6 singles. Seffrin and Ristovski won No. 2 doubles, 8-1, against Mussolini and Navarro Veys. 2012-13 APSU TENNIS HEADLINES LADY GOVS FALL TO EIU IN OVC FIRST ROUND PADUCAH, Ky. – Austin Peay State University women’s tennis team was eliminated in the first round of the Ohio Valley Conference Women’s Tennis Tournament, falling 4-0 to Eastern Illinois, concluding head coach Ross Brown’s first season at the helm at 9-13, with a 5-5 OVC mark. As was the norm this season, the doubles point told the tale of this match. Despite an 8-3 victory at No. 2 for Alison Carre and Vanessa Tavares – the season’s 10th for the sophomore duo – the Lady Govs dropped the doubles point to fall behind 1-0 entering singles play. The Lady Govs came undone during singles play, winning just three games in the numbers four, five and six matches. Tavares was the only Lady Gov to win multiple games, falling 6-1, 6-1 to Ali Foster at No. 4 singles. Brown hopes this experience will harden the Lady Govs for next season. CARRE NAMED SECOND-TEAM ALL-OVC PADUCAH, Ky. – Sophomore Alison Carre has been named to the Ohio Valley Conference all-conference second-team, announced at the annual awards banquet prior to the OVC Tennis Tournament.

LADY GOVS TAKE TWO AGAINST TSU CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Austin Peay State University women’s tennis team picked up two vital victories against Tennessee State, defeating the Tigers 4-0 (non-conference) and 6-1 at the Austin Peay Tennis Courts. Austin Peay (8-11, 4-4 OVC) evened its record to remain in the hunt for an Ohio Valley Conference Tournament berth. The Tigers of Tennessee State fall to 0-10 (0-7 OVC). In Saturday morning non-conference action, Carre and Cornea took the top two singles matches, both winning 6-0, 6-0, while Karac was challenged at No. 3 before winning 6-3, 4-1. Lady Govs thoroughly dispatched Tennessee State in the afternoon tilt. With only four Tigers dressed for action, the Lady Govs took two points automatically due to default, and won the doubles point thanks to wins by a Carre-Tavares No. 1 pairing (8-0) and Karac and Cornea (8-2) at No. 2. Cornea, Carre and Tavares were the top three seeds for the Lady Govs in conference play, and took their respective matches in 6-0, 6-0 straight sets.

Carre was 9-11 at No. 1 singles during the dual season and 13-12 overall. She teamed with Vanessa Tavares for an 11-6 doubles mark, primarily at No. 2 doubles. The pair is 7-3 in their last 10 matches. Carre was on a tear down the stretch, winning four of her last six matches to close out the regular season. She also won six of seven matches from Feb. 23-March 19. The native of France was a first-team all-conference honoree in 2012. This year, she led the Lady Govs back from a disastrous 1-7 start to earn the No. 5 seed at this weekend’s OVC Tournament at the Heflin Tennis Center. SEASON-BEST WIN STREAK FOR LADY GOVS AFTER DEFEATING BELMONT CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Austin Peay women’s tennis team helped itself out in the march to an Ohio Valley Conference Tournament berth, grinding out a 4-3 victory against Belmont at the Austin Peay Tennis Courts. The Lady Govs doubles set the tone early, winning a crucial early point. Junior Andra Cornea and sophomore Ornella Di Salvo won the No. 1 match, defeating Sandra Kancheva and Nikki Maciel, 8-2. Tavares and Carre knocked off Catherine Holliday and Fabiana Mersan, 8-6, at No. 2. In singles action, the Lady Govs top three seeds rose to the occasion, each winning their matches to secure the Lady Govs victory. Carre won the No. 1 match in convincing fashion, defeating Maciel 6-0, 6-1. Di Salvo survived a challenge from Holliday, winning 6-2, 7-5, at No. 2 singles, while Cornea took down Carolyn Caire, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 3 singles.
