For 15 years, Austin Peay men and women’s golf teams have held their home golf tournaments in the Fall. From 1999-2003 the tournament was named the Precept Intercollegiate. In 2004, a new partnership was formed and the tournament’s, now played on separate courses, has been called the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate. The women’s tournament is a two-day, two-round event played at the 5,960-yard Clarksville Country Club. The men’s tournament is a two-day, three-round event played at The Links at Novadell, a par-72, 6,841-yard course in Hopkinsville, Ky.

Austin Peay has had much success on both sides of the event. Staci Lynch (2006) won the women’s individual title in 2006. The Lady Govs have won the team title twice, in 2000 and 2002 The Govs have won their event eight times (1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2008, 2011, 2012) and have had the individual medalist six times as well. Grant Leaver (2005,2006) is the only twotime champion. In 2008, Erik Barnes shot the program’s first-ever sub-200 round at the tournament with a 66-66-67=199. Sophomore Marco Iten won the 2011 event after a two-hole playoff.

KIRK KAYDEN

Head Coach • 10th Season • Toledo, 1997 Kirk Kayden was named Austin Peay men’s golf coach in July 2004 and he has not only sustained the Govs’ 60-year golf tradition, but elevated it to a higher level, capturing both the 2009 and 2013 Ohio Valley Conference Championships along the way. Kayden took over the Govs program after Austin Peay won three consecutive Ohio Valley Conference Championships (2001-2003) and has led the team to 38 program records in nine seasons. The 2012-13 season will go down as one of the greatest in Austin Peay history. Not only did the Governors capture the program’s eighth OVC tournament championship, it as well set a school record with six tournament titles this season–four during the spring. The Governors, in fact, played 12 tournaments in 2012-13 and never finished outside the Top 5 in any of them. They own a combined 12217-4 record, or an incredible 86.7 winning percentage. Three Govs earned All-OVC–senior Dustin Korte along with juniors Anthony Bradley and Marco Iten–while freshman Chris Baker was named to the OVC All-Newcomer team. Korte and Bradley each earned medalist honors twice during the season while a Governor earned OVC Golfer of the Week five straight weeks–a streak stopped only because APSU didn’t play that week. The season was highlighted by a seventh-place tie in the NCAA Regional in Tempe, Ariz.–the best NCAA regional finish in the current format. The three-round 850 score and its 1-under 279 first-day score also represented APSU regional bests. The season’s other significant highlight came with the victory in the Memphis Intercollegiate, a field that included six Top 100 teams including three in the Top 50. As a result of such outstanding play this season, the Govs moved into the Top 75 in GolfStat rankings for the first time. This season came on the heels of a bittersweet 2011-12 season. It was one of the best regular seasons in Govs history as they won back-to-back tournaments for the first time since 2002-03, capturing Cincinnati’s Bearcat Invitational and the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate.

KAYDEN NOTEBOOK

CAREER NOTES

• During his 9-year career at Austin Peay, Kayden has coached 21 student-athletes who have received All-Ohio Valley Conference honors, including one Player of the Year (Erik Barnes) and two Freshman of the Year honorees (Grant Leaver and Erik Barnes). • Has coached the Governors to 17 tournament victories all-time, including a program-record six tournament wins in 2012-13. • Has twice won the Ohio Valley Conference Championship and finished in the top three six times in his nine seasons at the helm. Ten Austin Peay golfers have received OVC All-Tournament recognition in that span. • Has been a coach at five NCAA Men’s Golf Championships – twice as a head coach at Austin Peay and three times as an assistant at Penn State.

During the spring, the Govs became a regular in the final pairing. The team knocked on victory’s door in almost every tournament, making the final group five times in six events. Korte earned first-team AllOVC while Bradley was voted second team. Then-freshman Tucker Wallace was chosen to the OVC All-Newcomer team. However, when it was all said and done the Governors finished 38-1 against OVC competition, but the one loss came to Jacksonville State in the conference tournament, preventing the young Govs from achieving their goal of advancing to NCAA play--with that loss providing even greater motivation for 2012-13. But Kayden still saw his then-sophomore Bradley capture medalist honors and accompanied him to the NCAA tourney in Bowling Green, Ky. Bradley became only the third Gov (Craig Rudolph, 1987; Grant Leaver, 2008) to participate in an NCAA Regional as an individual. The Govs built off a 2011 season that featured a talented recruiting class. In fact, three freshmen regularly appeared in the spring lineup. Two of the freshmen, Bradley and Marco Iten earned All-OVC and OVC All-Newcomer honors while Korte also earned All-OVC honors. The Governors were in a rebuilding mode after losing one of the Govs’ finest players in history, Erik Barnes, following the 2010 season. Barnes played an intricate role in the Govs’ 2009 OVC championship run that saw APSU rally over the final few holes to capture the title. The 2008-09 season was a memorable one for Kayden, highlighted by the OVC title and program-best 13th-place finish at the NCAA Central Regional. Barnes set the individual 54-hole record with a three-round 199 – the program’s first-ever sub-200 round. In fact, during that Fall season, the Govs finished in the top five in every tourney played. Kayden kept the Govs rolling during the 2009 Spring schedule. A second-place finish at the Morehead State Spring Kick-Off was a precursor to winning the Grub Mart-Young Oil Intercollegiate, placing three Govs in the Top 10. Barnes would go on to take medalist honors at the Kentucky Bluegrass Invitational two weeks prior to the

team’s OVC Tournament win. It also was a season that saw the Govs set a record for the lowest 18-hole team score after setting records for 36- and 54-hole team scores in 2006-07. Under Kayden’s guidance, student-athletes have earned a total of 21 All-OVC honors, including two Freshman of the Year selections (Barnes, 2007 and Grant Leaver, 2005), while Barnes also was named the 2009 OVC Player of the Year. On the team side, Kayden has helped lead the Govs to the four lowest 18-hole rounds in school history, eight of the 10 lowest 36hole rounds and 12 of the 14 lowest individual 54-hole records. In the 2007-08 season, Kayden coached the Govs to five topfive tournament finishes. The Govs’ best performance came at the Arkansas State Indian Classic where the team fired a 30-under-par 834 and set numerous team and individual records while holding off tourney host Arkansas State. In 2006-07, Kayden led the Govs to seven top-five tourney finishes. The Govs’ best effort came at the Belmont Intercollegiate, as they set numerous team and individual marks while firing a 28 under-par 824 for the title. Before coming to APSU, the Fremont, Ohio, native played an integral part in Penn State’s three straight NCAA regional appearances, including a 15th-place finish at the NCAA championships in 2004. He helped coach Penn State’s Athlete of the Year (Andy Latowski in 2001-02), the Big Ten Sportsman of the Year, (Jonas Hyden in 2002-03) and an honorable mention All-American (Mark Leon in 2003-04). The Nittany Lions also had six All-NCAA Mid-Atlantic Region selections during his tenure. Kayden was an outstanding prep golfer at Fremont St. Joseph’s. In 1991, he won the Division III Ohio High School Golf Championship and was voted the Ohio High School Golfer of the Year for his outstanding play and overall sportsmanship. DUSTIN KORTE

Assistant Coach • First Season • Austin Peay, 2013 After enjoying a superb APSU career that ended in an NCAA championship appearance in Georgia last spring, Dustin Korte rejoined the program last fall as an assistant coach for head coach Kirk Kayden. Korte will work with APSU golfers and the APSU program while also pursuing his professional career. The Metropolis, Ill., native capped a stellar APSU career with a terrific senior season. He owned a 72.6 overall scoring average and the Governors’ best winning percentage (86.2 percent) on his way to a second straight All-Ohio Valley Conference honors that included three OVC Golfer of the Week honors. During the season, Korte garnered seven Top 10 finishes, including his first two career medalist honors. Playing in the brutally cold temperatures at Memphis, he shot a 2-over 218 to win against a field that featured multiple All-Americans. Two weeks later Korte shot a season-low round of 5-under 211, including a second-round 68–his season low–to capture the COG Mizzou Intercollegiate. That was one of a trio of under-par tournaments for APSU’s only senior. In the OVC championships, he helped lead the Govs to the OVC championship, shooting a 3-under 141 in the rain-shortened tourney.. Korte then led the Governors to its best-ever finished--seventh place--in the NCAA Regional in Tempe, Ariz. He shot an openinground 64 on the par-70 course and finished eighth overall in the regional. His 6-under 204 was lowest score of the non-NCAA qualifying teams, according him an NCAA Championship appearance in Alpharetta, Ga.

As a result, Korte became APSU’s first NCAA championship qualifier since NCAA Championship appearance since Craig Rudolph gained an invtie for the 1987 tournament. Korte also earned 2012 AllOVC honors after averaging a team-best 73.15 strokes per round that included six Top 10 finishes.Twice he gained secondplace finishes, the first at Samford, shooting a season-low 4-under 68 en route to a 3-under 213. The second second-place finish was in the COG Mizzou Intercollegiate, firing a 6-under 210. As a sophomore, Korte earned second-team All-OVC and really ememrged late in his second season. He the only Governors player to have every round count (16/16) fior the team. He finished as the Govs’ low scorer in three consecutive spring tournaments. Overall he collected four top-20 finishes, including two top-15 finishes. His .671 win percentage was the Govs’ best while his 73.94 stroke average was third among the Govs. He was the Govs’ second best golfer as a freshman in 2009-10. As a prep golfer, he was a three-time All-State selection at Massac County High School. He led his team to a Class AA Illinois State Championship in 2006, finishing runner up in the tournament. He finished seventh, indvidually, in 2007 as his team finished second. He recorded a second-place finish, individually, as a senior.

SARA ROBSON

Head Coach • 10th Season • Belmont, 2002 The promotion of then-assistant Sara Robson to women’s head coach when Austin Peay chose to divide its golf programs in the Summer 2004 was a studied one. That decision has proven to be the right one, as Robson has led the Lady Govs to much success over the past decade. Robson is her 10th Lady Govs head coaching season after serving two seasons as the combined programs assistant. Throughout the past seven seasons, Robson has guided the Lady Govs to 15 18-hole team records, 10 36-hole team records and 16 54-hole team records. Individually, Robson’s golfers have set seven 18-hole marks, eight 36-hole records as well as seven 54-hole records. In all, Robson’s teams account for nearly 75 team or individual APSU records. In Spring 2013, the young Lady Govs placed fifth in the OVC championships for a third straight season. It was one of three Top 5 finishes for the Lady Govs a year ago, a season that freshman Jessica Cathey , who fired a hole-in-one on the Par 3 No. 11 hole during the second day of last season’s OVC tournament, earned All-OVC while also being named to the OVC All-Newcomer team. The Lady Govs also earned the OVC Sportsmanship Award for women’s golf and gained Public Recognition from the NCAA for its perfect 1000 APR multi-year score. In 2011-12, Robson’s Lady Govs placed fifth in the OVC championships, one of six top-five finishes for the Lady Govs that season. Austin Peay women’s golf also earned the OVC’s Sportsmanship Award and a fourth straight OVC Team Academic honor. Freshman Lauren Bond earned a spot on the All-Newcomer team. Robson’s team recorded eight top-five tournament finishes during 2010-11, led by senior Chelsea Harris who also was the Lady Govs only All-OVC selection. With Harris earning her fourth-straight OVC All-Tourney honors for fifth-place individual finish, the Lady Govs shot a 948 for fifth place. In fact, the three-round 948 was APSU’s best-ever three-round OVC tournament total. The 2009-10 season saw Robson’s hard work manifested in Harris being named the OVC Player of the Year. Not only did Harris earn the top player award, she also took home medalist honors at the OVC Tournament, winning by five strokes. As a team, the Lady Govs earned a fourth-place finish, their best tourney finish under Robson. That strong finish was expected as Robson’s team notched the program’s top two team 54-hole records. The first came at the Mur-

ray State Drake Creek Invitational, where they finished fourth as a team with a 932. The Lady Govs were one stroke off that pace with a 933, in the spring, at the EKU Lady Colonel Classic. Her first two seasons as the Lady Govs head coach showed a steady improvement for a program that would quickly become established in the league. Robson led Austin Peay to an improved stroke average in each of those seasons, working to develop a foundation on which to build for the future. She brought in local standout Staci Lynch for the 2006-07 season and was not disappointed. As a freshman, Lynch was the Lady Govs top scorer in 11 of 12 tournaments, finishing with eight top-10 finishes. She won two tournaments – the Great Smokies Women’s Collegiate, where she set the program’s 36-hole record at 140, and the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate. Lynch finished with a 76.3 stroke

average, which remains the best of any Robson-coached golfer, and was named the Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year. During that season, the Lady Govs had three top-five and seven

top-10 finishes: the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate, the Troy Women’s Intercollegiate, the Ann Rhoads/BSC Shootout, Belmont Intercollegiate, the Saluki Invitational, the EKU Spring Invitational and the OVC Championship. The Lady Govs had six top-10 and two top-five finishes in 2007-08, led this time by another freshman, Chelsea Harris. The Metropolis, Ill, native posted a 78.96 scoring average and became the second Lady Govs player to earn All-OVC honors in as many years. Harris also was named to the OVC All-Newcomer team and finished third at the OVC Championship with a 234. The 2008-09 season was a banner year for the Lady Govs. Harris was named first-team All-OVC while earning OVC All-Tournament ho nors with a fifth-place finish at the event. The Lady Govs recorded a .321 team stroke average, improving by almost three strokes over the previous season. They set four 54-hole team records, including a 953 at the Chris Banister Gamecock Classic. Harris recorded seven top-10 finishes and set three 54-hole individual marks – the best coming at the Eat-A-Peach Collegiate where she fired a three-round 230 to finish second. Even with each season’s improvement, Robson has instilled in her team the ability to look forward and prepare for the real goal – an OVC Championship. Robson’s impact on the Lady Govs has seen success not only on
