MORGAN BROTHERS SOCCER FIELD

Morgan Brothers Soccer Field opened in 2005, providing Austin Peay arguably the best soccer pitch in the Ohio Valley Conference. The field once served as a practice for Austin Peay football and came about because of the generosity of the Morgan Brothers Construction, who provided the excavation and field preparation for the facility’s construction. How good is the Lady Govs field? The Tennessee Titans chose Austin Peay and the Morgan Brothers Soccer Field to serve as its summer training camp home in 2006—the only time the Titans have trained outside of Nashville since arriving in the Music City. APSU began playing soccer in 2002 and for the first three seasons the Lady Govs played its home matches at Heritage Park, a city-maintained facility. But as the program matured, an on-campus field became a necessity and with the help of the Morgan Brothers, that dream was realized. The Lady Govs first victory at Morgan Bros. Soccer Field came on Sep. 23, 2005 against rival Murray State. Erica Dengler scored 27 seconds into the match and added a late goal for a 3-1 APSU victory. In 2006, the Lady Govs lost only once at home. In fact, Austin Peay was better than .500 in each of their first three seasons in which they called Morgan Bros. Field home. The 2010 squad posted the program’s best-ever home record, going 8-1-0 on the home pitch. Tatiana Ariza scored six of her 11 goals in Clarksville and Austin Peay allowed just one goal at home, with Carley Newman earning five shut outs.

2015 LADY GOVS PROSPECTUS The Forwards: Fabulous Fabbros lead charge A year removed from tying Ashley Beck and Jessica Hosse for the second-most goals by a freshmen in APSU history with seven, Gina Fabbro didn’t slow down in 2014. With former star striker Tatiana Ariza out of the picture, the Canadian embraced the starting forward role, netting seven goals to go along with two assists. The All-OVC second-team selection again will be the focal point in the attacking third for the Lady Govs this season. Last season, Austin Peay fans learned there’s another talented player in the same family tree, with freshman Sophia Fabbro having a successful rookie year. With the ability to play up top or behind her older sister Gina in the attacking midfield role, Sophia started 12 of 18 games, scoring twice with three assists in 2014. She’ll look to receive even more opportunities in the upcoming season. In addition to the Fabbro sisters, the Lady Govs welcome back Kirstin Robertson, Mallory Burman, and Morgan Jackson. Robertson earned a good amount of playing time as a freshman, scoring a goal against Chattanooga. Burman will shift from defender to forward this season in an effort to get more chances up front. Jackson will mix in after redshirting last season. All three players will have chances to enter and generate offense in 2015. The Midfield: Experience returns The Lady Govs will be without former starting midfielder Frankie Carbajal, but experience will be ample in the center of the pitch. Senior Courtney Sheppard will return for her third season for Austin Peay. The Canadian catalyst settled into the attacking midfield role in 2014, but could also see time at forward after totaling one goal and two assists last season. Alongside will be Mary Ruth Locastro, who has started for Austin Peay in all 37 games over the course of her two seasons. It could most certainly be three years in a row once 2015 ends for the reliable midfielder. A pair of upcoming juniors – Brianna Avitabile and Alyssa Plowman - will be called on often after each found the back of the net once in 2014. Utility player Kate Carney, who sat out her freshman season, will be back looking to earn a spot. The Defense: Anchored by senior trio Of the four seniors on the 2015 squad, one will be manning the net for Austin Peay, while an additional two have solidified one of the always important center back positions. The goalkeeper situation for the Lady Govs will be a different story this season compared to the previous year. There were many question marks in 2014 with four keepers on the roster, but this time around, only two names will compete for the starting job. Senior Nikki Filippone has earned the right to be considered the favorite after three years under her belt. Filippone was the only keeper to have a shutout last season, recording three, and also led the team in wins with three. Sophomore

6

Lindsey Todd made seven appearances (three starts), going 1-3 overall with 27 saves. Whether it’s the veteran Filippone or up-and-comer Todd in goal, the Lady Govs expect to be solid in that area. Defensively, seniors Taylor Van Wagner and Shelby Olszewski will anchor a young, yet skilled group around her. Van Wagner started all 18 games for the Lady Govs in her first season back from injury, scoring one goal. Olszewski battled knee injuries throughout the 2014 campaign, appearing in just four games. After scoring six goals in her first season as a sophomore, the Ohio native will be hungry to return to the pitch. Two freshmen stepped up to fill big roles for Austin Peay last season. Maggie Ethridge joined Van Wagner at center back for much of the season (12 starts), and proved she can play the position for years to come. Caroline Wistrom showed continued improvements throughout last season, finishing with one goal and an assist, and was named the Most Improved Player at the 2014-15 Awards Banquet. She’ll now make the transition to defender this year. The question will be who replaces Claire Pultz at the opposite fullback position. Natalie Smith, who has appeared as both a defender and midfielder, will return after her 2014 season ended early after a knee injury. It could be someone like Smith, or a newcomer, who could replace the production lost at that spot on the field. Youth will be served With 11 incoming players eager to make their APSU debuts, there will most certainly be position battles as a promising recruiting class enters the program. Highlighting the 2015 group are two forwards with impressive resumes. Colombian Pamela Penaloza has experience playing international soccer for her native country, while McKenzie Dixon was named Gatorade Player of the Year in her native state of Arkansas. Both are worthy of keeping an eye on heading into their rookie campaigns. APSU head coach Kelley Guth picked up two junior college players out of Maryland – Brooke Nigrin and Nicole Wojcik – whose collegiate experience could pay dividends. Guth also signed two Canadian freshmen – Amber Bateman and Jennifer Smith – giving the Lady Govs six players who reside north of the border. Rounding out the class are five freshmen – Katie Costantino (Algonquin, Ill.), Sydney Dawson (Fort Campbell, Ky.), Ann Peyton Diffenbaugh (Brentwood, Tenn.), Isabel Holmes (Seattle, Wash), and Emilee Howard (Nashville, Tenn.).

THE OHIO VALLEY CONFERENCE Now in its 66th year, the Ohio Valley Conferencecontinues to build on the success that hasmade it the nation’s eighth-oldest NCAA Division I conference. In May 2011 the Conference expanded for the second time in four years, adding Belmont University which begins competition in the 2012-13 academic year. The addition of Belmont gives the OVC 12 members, the most the league has had at one time in its illustrious history. The move added a second team in the city of Nashville and was the first addition to the league since Southern Illinois University Edwardsville joined in 2008. The 2009-10 school year saw a change in leadership as Beth DeBauche was named the seventh full-time Commissioner in league history on July 28, 2009. She is currently one of just five females to be the head of a Division I conference, and one of just eight to lead a Division I conference all-time. The last three commissioners of the OVC have moved onto jobs as the commissioner of the Big Ten, Big 12 and the Mid-American Conferences. The OVC’s proud history dates back to 1948, but seeds for the new league were actually planted in 1941. It was then that Roy Stewart, the athletics director at Murray State, Charles “Turkey” Hughes, the athletics director at Eastern Kentucky, and Kelly Thompson, the public relations director at Western Kentucky, first broached the idea of forming a new conference. Discussions were put on hold by World War II, but reemerged Feb. 27-28, 1948 at the Kentucky Hotel in Louisville as the three original institutions combined with Morehead State, Louisville and Evansville to form the OVC. In the 1950s, the OVC became a pioneer on a much more significant scale socially. During times of racial segregation, league member Morehead State became one of the first non-traditionally black midsouthern institutions to accept a black student. In 1958, Marshall Banks earned athletically-related aid at Morehead, which signed a second black athlete, Howard Murphy, a year later. In 1961, Murphy earned all-conference recognition as a halfback in football. With racial barriers broken, the rest of the institutions in the league began to provide educational and athletic opportunities to African-Americans. The playing field is not the only place where OVC athletes are working hard. The league also recognizes excellence in the classroom. Six Scholar-Athlete Awards are presented yearly to male and female athletes, while others are commended for their academic success by being Medal of Honor recipients or earning a spot on the Com-

missioner’s Honor Roll. Additionally, the women’s athletics began a rebirth on the league annually presents one institutional national scene as the NCAA began sponsorAcademic Achievement Award, as well as ing and marketing women’s sports. KELLEY GUTH

Head Coach 14th Season Florida State, 1996

Entering her 14th season, Kelley Guth remains the only head coach in Austin Peay women’s soccer history. After overseeing the best four-year stretch in school history that saw Austin Peay athletes earn 13 All-OVC honors, an OVC Offensive Player of the Year and OVC Freshman of the Year award, culminating in a 48-27-5 mark and two OVC Championship match appearances, Guth turns the page on a new chapter in Austin Peay soccer history. The 2013 season, which ended with a top-four OVC Tournament finish for the third time in four seasons, saw the graduations of Tatiana and Natalia Ariza, Andy and Joceline Quiceno and others that will be tough to replace. The 2012 season was highlighted by Austin Peay’s second OVC Championship match appearance in three seasons. Tatiana Ariza won Austin Peay’s first OVC Player of the Year honor, and the Lady Govs finished second in league play. That helped erase the eighthplace finish Austin Peay earned during an injury-plagued 2011 campaign. Guth’s 2010 team was sparked by OVC Freshman of the Year Tatiana Ariza, along with first-team pick Natalia Ariza and second-team All-OVC selection Joceline Quiceno. Those three freshman, along with a nationally-ranked defense, set the tone for undoubtedly the most successful Lady Govs soccer team in program history. After appearing in the OVC tournament twice previously, the 2010 season was a breath of fresh air for Guth. Her pedigree on the pitch as both a player and coach has always been above reproach, which is why her team’s recent success was so important to the program after winning only one game during an injury-plagued 2009 season. Her coaching career began at Florida State University High School in 1997, where she coached for three seasons. While coaching at FSU High School, she also played in the W-League, a national amateur league, for the Fort Collins Force. With the Force, Guth received all-tournament honors as well as player of the week honors twice, as the Force took home the 1998 W-League championship. Guth also played for the Florida State women’s club team and was named women’s open division MVP of the National IntramuralRecreation Sports Association. Guth received her initial Division I soccer coaching opportunity with Ohio Valley Conference member Southeast Missouri under her former FSU head coach Heather Nelson. As an assistant coach in 2000 and 2001, Guth was in charge of recruiting, academic oversight of student-athletes as well as over-

seeing all travel arrangements while assisting in practice with all positions on the field. Guth’s inaugural season with the Lady Govs was indeed a challenge, finishing 0-13-3; the team scored only nine goals. However, the Lady Govs steadily improved during their second season, posting five wins and 25 goals. In 2004, the Lady Govs continued to mature on the field under Guth’s guidance. After a rough start, they finished strong with a conference victory at Murray State. The Lady Govs posted the program’s best record yet, 8-9-2 overall and 1-6-1 in the league, scoring 29 goals. Two years later, in 2006, the Lady Govs went 5-4 in league play, before hitting a two-year OVC slump. The 2008 season was particularly frustrating as the Lady Govs drop eight one-goal matches. In 2009, the Lady Govs were challenged with overcoming a number of injuries and that was no different for the 2010 slate. In fact, during the 2010 OVC championship game, Guth was relegated to only one substitute for the final match after Joceline Quiceno suffered a knee injury early the final contest. Guth began her collegiate soccer career at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, B.C., where she led her squad as a two-time NAIA first-team All-America selection and twice selected conference player of the year. In 1993, her first season with the Clan, Guth was an NAIA All-America honorable mention. She improved her second season as the Clan claimed a conference championship and she collected first-team All-America honors. In 1995, she again received first-team All-America honors, while Simon Fraser placed fifth in the NAIA national tournament. In 1996, she transferred for one season at Florida State University and left her mark in those record books as well. In one season, Guth scored 14 goals, including six game-winners which are third-most all-time at FSU. Her accomplishments as a player and coach continued to be recognized as she was inducted into the Delta (British Columbia) Sports Hall of Fame, in June 2004. Guth was one of 10 inductees into the inaugural class, selected from a group of 60. In March 2009, Guth was appointed as the OVC’s representative for the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). Guth, who also assists the Clarksville Fusion Futbol Club in their player development program, currently resides in Clarksville with her husband Matt, who works as a correctional officer for the Davidson County Sheriff’s Department in Nashville.

Associate Head Coach 9th Season Jacksonville State, 2003

Assistant Coach 1st Season North Texas, 2013

Jeremy Sullivan is in his ninth season as the Lady Govs goalkeepers coach and recruiting coordinator. This fall, Sullivan was promoted to associate head coach. His work on and off the field during the 2010 season led to his being named the Midwest Region College Assistant Coach of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association. The 2010 season saw the Lady Govs advance to the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament championship game, in part due to a strong defense and brilliant work in net. Austin Peay led the league in goals-against-average (.687) which ranked 23rd nationally, shutout percentage (.591), which ranked eighth-best nationally, and save percentage (.850), which ranked 24th nationally. During Sullivan’s tenure as Lady Govs goalkeeper coach, Austin Peay has set program records in goals against average (0.68, 2010) and shutouts (13, 2010). The Lady Govs have reached the OVC Tournament in three of the last four seasons, including championship match appearances in 2010 and 2012. Sullivan played a large role in recruiting the 2010 class that produced Austin Peay’s first OVC Freshman of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year, Tatiana Ariza. Her sister Natalia -- who played with Tatiana for the Colombian National Team at the 2012 London Olympics -- also was a three-time first-team All-OVC pick, while three other players from that class (Andy Quiceno, Joceline Quiceno and Haylee Shoaff) would earn all-conference honors during their Austin Peay careers. Sullivan came to Austin Peay after two years as a graduate assistant at Belmont, where he earned his master’s of education while serving as the Bruins goalkeepers coach. The Alabama native played college soccer at Wallace State Community College, in Hanceville, Ala., where he led the Lions to a 15th national ranking in his final season. He then transferred to Jacksonville State, where he completed his degree in recreation administration. As an undergrad, Sullivan worked three seasons as a student assistant. In that time, Sullivan also worked at Donoho School as the head coach. While at Belmont, Sullivan also was the head coach of the Brentwood Eclipse U13. He holds his NSCAA Advanced National Diploma and a USSF Class B license, the latter of which was obtained during Spring 2014. Sullivan lives in Clarksville with his wife, Jessica, and their daughters Lyla, age 7, and Remi, age 3.

Samantha Parker joins the Austin Peay women’s soccer coaching staff with ample experience as both an assistant and interim head coach. A native of Clarksville, Ark., Parker was most recently a member of the University of the Ozarks, a tenure which began in November 2014. Parker served as an assistant for the Eagles before receiving an opportunity to become interim head coach following a change. She held the position for three months, and was responsible for all aspects of the program, including developing winter workouts and managing office tasks. On the training grounds, Parker served as a defensiveminded instructor who trained goalkeepers and developed strategies for the back line. In addition, she was the head recruiter for the 2015 and 2016 classes. Eleven of the current Lady Eagles players under her were named to the 2014 Fall American Southwest Conference All-Academic Team, with the team as a whole earning a NSCAA Academic Award. Aside from her involvement at the collegiate level, Parker was the head coach for AVSA U13G Travel Team beginning in January 2015. Prior to that, she managed club soccer for Ohio University as both a coach and graduate teaching assistant. With a degree in Kinesiology from the University of North Texas, Parker utilized her knowledge of the field to teach a variety of Physical Education courses for undergraduate students. Throughout 2012 and 2013, Parker focused on helping the younger generation of players in two locations. First, she worked with kids ages five and up to improve their speed, power, and agility at Velocity Sports. After a one-year tenure, she became involved with Play Soccer Appalachia, a non-profit organization for local Southeast Ohio Elementary School. Parker received an internship for FC Dallas Youth and Women’s Premier League in the summer of 2011 where she assisted in running the Select, Academy, and FCD MLS Academy teams. As an athlete, Parker played competitive soccer in North Texas beginning in 1996. A captain for Dr. John Horn High School, she helped lead her school to the 5A playoffs. She also competed on a couple club teams in LHGCL Division II – 02-06 Comets and 06-09 Sting.

Second-half surge dooms Lady Govs in opener After a solid first-half performance in the season-opener at Evansville, Austin Peay State University women’s soccer team gave up three second-half goals to fall 3-0 to the Purple Aces in non-conference action. For just the second time since 2010, Austin Peay takes the loss in the season opener, last losing 2-1 to Arkansas in 2012 – a season that ended with Austin Peay in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament Championship match. The loss also drops the Lady Govs to 0-5-0 all-time against the Purple Aces. A back-and-forth first half saw sophomore Nikki Filippone make a pair of nice saves in net, denying Abby Springer in the 30th minute and Montana Portenier in the 38th. She was helped a little by the iron later in the half, when a Carlie Scales shot hit the post. Senior Claire Pultz accounted for all the Lady Govs offensive chances in the first half, firing a shot high in the third minute and forcing a save out of Evansville’s Simone Busby

2014 HEADLINES in the 30th. Evansville would roar out of the gate in the second half, challenging sophomore Katie Emig early and often after she entered in net following the break. Bronwyn Boswell accounted for the first two Evansville tallies, going far post in the 50th minute and taking a deflected cross and hammering it home in the 56th minute. The Purple Aces final score came off a 59th-minute corner kick. Emily Richardson served it in and Caitie Dierkes found Noor Medlej to put it away. The Lady Govs found no offensive solutions in the final half. Sophomore Merritt Monger forced another save from Busby in the 47th minute, while freshman Sophia Fabbro made a nice challenge against Whitney Biggs in the 86th minute. Lady Govs run wild in home-opening win After going scoreless in two exhibition games and the season-opener at Evansville, Austin Peay State University women’s soccer team got on the board in a big way with a 5-2 win against Chattanooga in Sunday’s home opener. Sophomore Merritt Monger scored twice to help the Lady Govs even their record at 1-1-0. The win was Austin Peay’s fifth straight against Chattanooga (0-2-0). Austin Peay got on the board first thanks to senior Claire Pultz, who lofted a shot over the head of Natalie Irwin, playing out of position in net after Chattanooga lost its starter and backup earlier this weekend. The goal was Pultz’s first since her freshman season in an Aug. 21, 2011 contest against Chattanooga. Chattanooga’s Crystal Mackezyk would answer less than two minutes later with a header from a Brandy Herrera corner kick, and then put the Mocs ahead with a 23rd-minute tally. Monger found her stride in the 33rd minute, gathering a pass from Alyssa Plowman and depositing it into the lowerright corner from outside the 18-yard box to knot the game at two. In the 37th minute, Monger was dragged down in the box and awarded a penalty kick. She took it herself and put it away to the left side to give Austin Peay a lead the Lady Govs would not relinquish. In the second half, a pair of Austin Peay freshmen would help put the game out of reach. In the 80th minute, Pultz played in a long ball to Caroline Wistrom, who tapped it by the keeper caught up in a congested net. Two minutes later, Kirstin Robertson fired home a rocket for the final tally of the day following a solid bit of passing from freshman Sophia Fabbro. In her first career start, Lindsey Todd would get the victory, making one save while allowing two first-half goals. Junior Nikki Filippone made four second-half saves. Irwin was forced to make 10 saves in her first career action in net. Offense slowed in loss to Alabama Southeastern Conference foe Alabama proved too much for Austin Peay State University women’s soccer team to overcome, Friday, with the Lady Govs dropping a 5-0 deci-

sion at Morgan Brothers Field. The Crimson Tide were relentless offensively, hounding the Lady Govs with 24 shots. Austin Peay was held without a shot in the first half and did not attempt their first until 30 minutes remained in the contest. Austin Peay limited Alabama for the first 15 minutes of the contest, but surrendered four goals over the next nine minutes. Merel van Dongen got the scoring started in the 18th minute, and was followed by Laura Lee Smith less than two minutes later. Theresa Diederich (21st minute) and Hailey Brohaugh (24th) would add to Austin Peay’s deficit. Alabama continually got bodies forward, resulting in multiple chances in the box against the Lady Govs defense, including Brohaugh’s goal off a deflection. Pia Rijsdijk put up the half’s fifth goal with under a minute left, corralling a loose ball in the box and sliding it past a diving Nikki Filippone, who was forced to make seven saves in the first half alone. Goals prove elusive in loss to Bisons The Austin Peay State University women’s soccer team hosted Atlantic Sun foe Lipscomb in a rare Monday night matchup. Behind the strength of two goals in less than six minutes, the visiting Bisons were able to overcome the Lady Govs, 2-0. The Lady Govs were able to keep the Bisons at bay for the opening 20 minutes of the match, but surrendered the opening goal of the contest when Ellen Lundy headed home a cross from Anna Lail in the 21st minute. The Bisons were able to extend their lead to 2-0 in the 27th minute when Niamh Rawlins took a shot from near the left sideline that made its way past keeper Katie Emig. Offensively, sophomore Mary Ruth Locastro fired two shots on goal while the Lady Govs offense forced Bisons keeper Anna Buhigas to make five saves. After being sidelined by injury the first three games of the season, junior Courtney Sheppard played 33 minutes, putting a shot on goal. Sophomore Alyssa Plowman, who played for Lipscomb in 2013, picked up 10 minutes of playing time against her former squad. Lady Govs can’t capitalize late vs. Kennesaw State ‘Get forward!’ Those words or some derivation are shouted on soccer fields all over the world, with a coach urging their offense to get into the attacking third. Those words rang out several times Friday in Austin Peay’s 1-0 loss to Kennesaw State in the opening game of the Blue Raider Classic. The Lady Govs were held without a shot during the first 45 minutes, with the Owls taking 12 in that time, including five that found their way on frame. However, junior keeper Nikki Filippone was able to make the stop on each Kennesaw State attempt in the first half. Kennesaw State broke through in the 56th minute. A Julia Nelson lob into the box found the foot of Marit Sandtroeen, who slipped in behind the Lady Govs defense and found 2015 AUSTIN PEAY SOCCER • LETSGOPEAY.COM •

2014 HEADLINES herself all alone to deposit the goal beyond the outstretched hands of freshman Lindsey Todd, who came on at halftime for Filippone in net. In the final 30 minutes, Austin Peay’s offense kicked into gear, with the combination of freshmen Caroline Wistrom and Sophia Fabbro teaming with sophomore Gina Fabbro to get into the attacking third for multiple chances. The Lady Govs best opportunity to score came in the 61st minute, when the younger Fabbro found herself with a chance on net and no keeper to beat after a poor challenge. However, Fabbro was forced to race the ball and defenders to the end line and her touch was pushed wide of the net.

and came back less than three minutes later to deposit a through-ball into the box from Bethany Bunker to make it 2-0 heading into the break. Austin Peay inserted freshman Lindsey Todd between the pipes for the second half, and the Brentwood native responded with six second-half saves, including a pair late from point-blank range to keep the deficit close. Unfortunately, Austin Peay couldn’t quite close the deal on repeated attempts in the attacking third. Freshman Mallory Burman was the only Lady Gov to force a save from McCormick in the second half, that coming in the 85th minute.

Goals scarce in loss at Middle Tennessee The rough early-season ride continued for Austin Peay State University women’s soccer team Sunday when the Lady Govs concluded their stay at the Blue Raider Classic with a 2-0 loss to host Middle Tennessee. The first half was contested predominantly in the middle of the park, with neither side stringing together consistent pressure in the attacking third. Middle Tennessee’s Peyton McCollum put an early shot on net, in the 14th minute, but was thwarted by Austin Peay junior Nikki Filippone. Austin Peay junior Courtney Sheppard took a pair of shots in the 15th and 23rd minutes, but neither were put on frame. Austin Peay successfully held the Blue Raiders at bay for most of the first half, but a dangerous corner kick from Amalie Anderdal in the half’s final minute got loose in the box. Emily Jorgenson found the ball in the ensuing scrum and knocked it past Filippone just before the horn sounded. The Lady Govs scoreless streak reached four matches, equaling a program-worst set twice in 2009. Austin Peay’s last goal was scored late in the Chattanooga match Aug. 24, spanning a stretch of 368:38. Austin Peay would put two shots on goal, both in the second half, but neither sophomore Gina Fabbro in the 59th minute nor her sister, freshman Sophia Fabbro, in the 68th were able to slide an attempt past Kelsey Brouwer in net.

Fabbro finds net but Lady Govs fall to Samford The scoring drought ended for Austin Peay State University women’s soccer Friday night, but the Lady Govs still came out on the wrong side of a 3-1 decision against Samford at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field. Sophomore Gina Fabbro got the scoring started for the Lady Govs in this one, heading one home off a lob into the box from senior Claire Pultz in the fourth minute. For Fabbro, the tally is her season’s first and career’s eighth, putting her one behind Jocelyn Murdoch for 10th all-time. It also stopped an epic goal-less streak for the Lady Govs, who had gone 461:49 since their last goal. Unfortunately, it would be a short-lived advantage for Austin Peay as the Bulldogs would find the equalizer in the 19th minute. Taylor Borman volleyed in a cross from Hallie Georgi, past freshman Lindsey Todd, who got the start for the Lady Govs. Amanda Abbott got the go-ahead and insurance tallies on the board for Samford. In the 30th minute, she collected a rebound from a Todd save and deposited it into the lower left corner, and followed that up just two minutes later by banging home a cross from Jermaine Seoposenwe. However, despite five shot attempts and three that forced saves from Samford keeper Anna Maddox over the final 45 minutes, Austin Peay could not chip away at the Bulldogs advantage.

Lady Govs battle hard against Ole Miss Austin Peay State University women’s soccer team took some positive steps Friday night against Ole Miss. Despite coming away on the wrong side of a 2-0 decision, the Lady Govs showed poise and toughness against an experienced Rebel squad picked to finish ninth in the Southeastern Conference preseason coaches poll. With seven of the starting 11 comprised of freshmen and sophomores, Austin Peay held tough against the Rebels for much of the first half. After struggling to get forward against their previous SEC opponent, Alabama on Aug. 29, the Lady Govs were able to string together several first-half opportunities, including a 21st-minute attempt from freshman Caroline Wistrom that hit the post and a 35th-minute shot from senior Claire Pultz that was snared by Ole Miss’ Kelly McCormick. All the Rebels offensive success came in a three-minute span. In the 39th minute, Olivia Harrison beat sophomore Katie Emig to the lower left corner from 12 yards out,

Fabbro-lous night for Lady Govs against EKU Despite losing a pair of sister-act scoring machines in Tatiana and Natalia Ariza and Andy and Joceline Quiceno to graduation at the end of last season, Austin Peay State University’s tradition of high-scoring siblings looks to still be going strong. Freshman Sophia Fabbro notched her first career goal and her sister Gina scored twice to give Austin Peay a 3-1 victory against Eastern Kentucky in its Ohio Valley Conference opener, Friday. The Lady Govs got going quick in this one, with the younger Fabbro slamming home the rebound from a Caroline Wistrom shot to give Austin Peay a lead in the sixth minute. In the 17th, her sister got in on the action. A quick combo from junior Courtney Sheppard and senior Claire Pultz gave the elder Fabbro a chance to beat her defender off the dribble, and she smashed a shot into the lower left corner of the net to put Austin Peay up 2-0. Eastern Kentucky’s attack was stymied in the first half,

2014 HEADLINES with the Colonels held to just six shots. However, the visitors picked up the pace in the second half, forcing five saves from netminder Nikki Filippone – the junior Canadian became the first Austin Peay keeper to play the full 90 minutes this season. Filippone’s shining moment came in the 53rd minute. A penalty in the box gave the Colonels a chance at getting on the board, but Filippone pulled off an incredible save to hold Eastern Kentucky at bay. The Colonels did get a goal thanks to a 62nd-minute cross from Paige Larkin that was headed in by Katie Bright. But Austin Peay kept the pedal to the metal and got an insurance goal from Gina Fabbro in the 81st minute, who collected a through ball from sophomore Merritt Monger and slotted it into the lower-left corner to put it out of reach. Morehead State prevails despite brilliant outing from Filippone Against one of the most potent offenses in the Ohio Valley Conference, Austin Peay State University women’s soccer team hung tough to the very against Morehead State, Sunday, before falling 2-1 to the Eagles at Jayne Stadium. Austin Peay was kept in the contest thanks to an immense first half from junior keeper Nikki Filippone. The Canadianbred netminder made five first-half saves, facing a dozen first-half shots by a high-octane Eagle offense featuring 2013 OVC Offensive Player of the Year Jade Flory. Late in the first half, fortune favored the Lady Govs when Morehead State keeper Elizabeth Floyd was red-carded for a handball outside the 18-yard box. With the Eagles forced to turn to a back-up keeper in Kaitlynn Murphy, Austin Peay entered halftime with a silver lining despite being outshot 12-3 over the first 45 minutes. It would be the Eagles that scored first, however, when Kimberly Golden corralled a rebound form a Caity Fox corner and Elizabeth Tresnak attempt at slid it past Filippone for her season’s second goal. But the Lady Govs answered quickly with a goal of their own from sophomore Alyssa Plowman. The Lipscomb transfer scored after an Austin Peay free kick led to a break in defense from Morehead State, and Plowman earned the equalizer, as well as her first Austin Peay tally. Morehead State’s offensive onslaught simply never let up and the hosts scored the go-ahead goal with just over 10 minutes remaining in the match. A cross from Kelsey Patera found Flory in the box, and she touched it to Macy Cobb for the goal. Austin Peay can’t make lead last against EIU Despite holding an early lead, Austin Peay State University women’s soccer team found itself on the wrong side of a 3-1 decision against Eastern Illinois, Sunday, at Lakeside Field. It would be Austin Peay striking first in this one, taking the lead less than four minutes into the game, and once more it was a Fabbro-to-Fabbro connection. The freshman, Sophia, found her older sister Gina for the latter’s fourth goal of the season and her 11th career tally, tying her with former teammates Natalia Ariza and Joceline Quiceno for eighth all-time.

Most of the Austin Peay offense would flow through the elder Fabbro in the first half. The Coquitlam, B.C., native was responsible for five shots and four shots on goal during the first half. It would be a short-lived advantage, however, with the Panthers answering less than six minutes later. Madison Carter found Hannah Miller on the run and Miller put the equalizer away from the top of the box. The Panthers took the lead early in the second half thanks to Meagan Radloff. The 2013 All-OVC first-team selection was found in the box off a set piece from Allie Lakie to net her season’s third goal. Radloff would put the game away in the 74th minute. Following an Austin Peay handball in the box, Radloff took the ensuing penalty kick and put it past Filippone for the insurance goal. Radloff is now tied for the team lead with four goals and leads the Panthers with 11 points (four goals, three assists). Lady Govs stun Redhawks, 1-0 Austin Peay State University women’s soccer team kicked off an important weekend of Ohio Valley Conference play with a 1-0 win against Southeast Missouri, Friday, at Houck Stadium. The Lady Govs were able to leave SEMO thanks to a golden goal by sophomore Mary Ruth Locastro in the 95th minute. Southeast Missouri (5-5-0, 2-2-0 OVC) controlled much of the possession early in the match but only outshot the Lady Govs 5-2 over the opening 45 minutes. Locastro recorded both shots for the Lady Govs while junior goalie Nikki Filippone recorded one save in the opening stanza. In the second half, possession was more BALANCED but the game remained scoreless. Austin Peay (3-9-0, 2-2-0 OVC) was outshot by the Redhawks 8-1 in the second half. Filippone picked up six more saves while freshman Sophia Fabbro recorded the Lady Govs only shot of the second half. In the overtime period, Locastro was able to find the BACK of the net after a scramble at the top of the box in the 95th minute to give Austin Peay the win. #StateOfTheGovs: A déjà vu moment for Locastro A déjà vu moment led to Mary Ruth Locastro scoring the winning goal for the Lady Govs at Southeast Missouri. Before the game Friday, assistant coach Jeremy Sullivan played balls off to players from 18 yards out, a normal routine for Austin Peay in warmups. On his final pass to “Roo”, the sophomore volleyed it into the back of the net before starting the match. Turns out, it was the exact location where she would score the clinching goal for the Lady Govs in the 95th minute. In the first overtime period, Austin Peay earned a throw near the corner flag, with Shelby Olszewski launching it inside the box. After it was headed by a fellow teammate, Gina Fabbro, and a SEMO defender, the ball fell in a perfect position for Locastro to send it home past the keeper. It was the first goal of the season for Locastro, and the second of her collegiate career. She netted her first score 2015 AUSTIN PEAY SOCCER • LETSGOPEAY.COM •

2014 HEADLINES against Belmont last season, and prior to that, scored 28 times for Saint Agnes Academy at the prep level. But the feeling of winning a game for her team in extra time is like no other. Locastro led the team with three shots on goal in the match, with the final one lifting their spirits into the next road contest. Lady Govs claim second consecutive 1-0 victory Austin Peay State University women’s soccer team concluded a crucial weekend of Ohio Valley Conference competition with a 1-0 win against conference-leading SIU Edwardsville, Sunday, at Korte Stadium. The Lady Govs were able to leave SIUE with the victory thanks to a 58th minute goal by sophomore Gina Fabbro. In the first half, the Cougars (7-5-1, 4-1-0 OVC) outshot the Lady Govs 9-0. Junior goalie Nikki Filippone recorded three saves in the opening stanza. After intermission, Austin Peay (4-9-0, 3-2-0 OVC) grabbed a lead they would not relinquish in the 56th minute, when Fabbro intercepted a back pass to goalie Jennifer Pelley and fired the ball into the goal for her fifth goal of the season. The goal tied Fabbro with Erica Dengler (2003-06) and Kaylee Yago (2002-05) for sixth all-time in Austin Peay’s recordbook with 12. Despite being outshot by the Cougars 15-6, the Lady Govs were able to hold on to their lead. Filippone recorded six saves on the way to her second shutout of the season – and the weekend – while offensively, Fabbro led the Lady Govs with two shots in addition to her game winning goal. Seniors Claire Pultz and Shelby Olszewski also recorded shots on goal for Austin Peay. Second-half surge downs Austin Peay After holding tough against the Ohio Valley Conference’s most prolific offense in the first half, Austin Peay State University could not stem the tide against Jacksonville State over the final 45 minutes, falling 5-0 to the Gamecocks, Friday, at Morgan Brothers Field. The first half was balanced, with both sides putting up eight shots. Jacksonville State got on the board thanks to Courtney Hurt penalty kick in the 11th minute following a handball call in the box, but the Gamecocks offense, leading the OVC at 2.78 goals per game, was otherwise stymied in the opening period. Despite nine total saves from junior Nikki Filippone, with more than a few being of the acrobatic variety, the second half belonged to the Gamecocks. Jackie Rush scored in the 73rd minute, and that was followed less than two minutes later by a Lindsey Jackson tally. Shelby Olszewski did what she could for the offense. In her season’s third appearance after missing two months due to injury, Olszewski got forward time and again for Austin Peay, attempting five shots and putting three on net to lead the squad. Caroline Robinson was solid for the Gamecocks in net, securing six saves for the clean sheet. Kayla Thompson got the last two helpers for Jacksonville State, assisting on goals by Nicola Dominikovich and Bri-

anna Boutzvious in the 83rd and 87th minute, respectively. Senior Day ends in scoreless draw vs. TTU The chances were there for Austin Peay State University women’s soccer team in Sunday’s Senior Day match against Tennessee Tech, but the final touch was elusive as the Lady Govs battled the Golden Eagles to a scoreless draw at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field. After playing to a draw for the first time since Oct. 29, 2013, Austin Peay finds itself at 4-10-1 (3-3-1 OVC) on the season, sitting seventh in the league and a point back from defending champion Morehead State for the final spot in the OVC Tournament with three matches remaining. Tennessee Tech (2-11-2, 0-5-2 OVC) picks up its second point in league play. The two squads spent much of the first half feeling one another out, until the final 15 minutes of the period. During the half’s final third, the Lady Govs unleashed six shots, including a penalty kick from sophomore Gina Fabbro that was saved by Tennessee Tech keeper Rebecca Toler, who stopped the ensuing rebound by junior Courtney Sheppard as well. Despite doubling up the Golden Eagles shot total, 16-8, the Lady Govs were never able to solve Toler and the Tennessee Tech defense. In the second half, Austin Peay was only able to put two shots on frame: a 77th-minute attempt by junior Shelby Olszewski and a last-minute try by sophomore Mary Ruth Locastro. The two overtime periods netted little more in the way of offensive attempts. Senior Frankie Carbajal put one on frame in the 94th minute, and Tennessee Tech’s Zoie Hensley forced a save from junior Nikki Filippone in the 102nd, but both sides came away from the contest without a tally on the scoreboard. Toler made six saves for the Golden Eagles, while Filippone made two for Austin Peay. It’s the first scoreless draw Austin Peay has been a part of since Oct. 14, 2012 against SIU Edwardsville. The contest doubled as Senior Day for Lady Govs Carbajal and Claire Pultz, who were honored in an on-field pregame ceremony. Late rally falls short for APSU against Murray State A furious late rally came up short Friday in Austin Peay State University’s matchup with rival Murray State. The Lady Govs battled to the last second but came out on the wrong side of a 3-2 decision. The Lady Govs got going quick, with sophomore Gina Fabbro netting a fourth-minute tally. After making a solid defensive play on the ball to win possession, then carried it to just outside the 18-yard box, launching a low, bouncing shot that got under Shelby Haworth’s hands for the opening salvo. Murray State would answer later in the half. Winning a ball to the corner, Pavlina Nepokojova sent a short cross to Julie Mooney in the top left corner of the 18-yard box. Mooney, the OVC’s leading scorer, aimed for the lower right corner and just slid the shot by junior Nikki Filippone to even the contest.

2014 HEADLINES Filippone preserved the tie by clearing off a point-blank attempt from Harriet Withers in the 33rd minute, but Murray State would find the back of the net one more time in the first half. On a scramble following a corner kick and attempted clear, Destiny White bounced a pass off Taylor Richerson and past a diving Filippone to put the Racers ahead by one entering the break. The Racers tacked on an insurance goal in the 63rd minute, with Nepokojova hitting a rocket that Filippone was able to get a hand on but couldn’t keep out of the net. Filippone made two incredible saves from point-blank range later in the half off back-to-back attempts from Rebecca Bjorkvall and Mooney to keep the Lady Govs close. Austin Peay wasn’t done, however. With less than five minutes remaining, junior Courtney Sheppard slammed home a goal with an assist from freshman Sophia Fabbro to keep the Lady Govs alive. Unfortunately, time ran out as the comeback bid came up wanting. Austin Peay drops road finale to UT Martin For Austin Peay State University women’s soccer team, it was an all-too-familiar scenario. The Lady Govs had seen their season end at UT Martin each of the last two seasons – an Ohio Valley Conference Tournament championship match loss to the Skyhawks in 2012 and a semifinal defeat by Morehead State last season. They entered Sunday’s match against the Skyhawks with their backs against the wall – an Austin Peay loss and a Morehead State victory would erase all possibility of a return trip to the OVC Tournament. It would unfortunately come to pass for Austin Peay, which fell 4-2 to the Skyhawks, Sunday, at Skyhawk Field. That coupled with Morehead State’s 5-0 win against Eastern Illinois eliminated Austin Peay from postseason contention for 2014, with one home match remaining. It was an inauspicious beginning, no doubt. Less than a minute into the contest, UT Martin’s Rianna Jarrett took a pass from Ashlie Watson, shook a defender loose one-onone and unleashed a rocket from inside the 18 that got by junior Nikki Filippone for her season’s 16th goal. The Skyhawks would take a 2-0 lead in the 56th minute on a Jarrett feed to Dominika Conc. She slid a shot along the endline that got underneath Filippone and caught the post just right to enter the net. Freshman Sophia Fabbro got Austin Peay on the board with her season’s second goal in the 60th minute, working a give-and-go with sister Gina to win a two-on-one situation and cut the deficit in half. UT Martin tacked on two late goals to put the match out of reach, with Watson scoring in the 71st minute on an assist from Eva Heller and Jarrett adding her second goal in the 74th minute, again with Watson on the assist. Junior Taylor Van Wagner headed home her season’s first goal off a set piece in the 85th minute, redirecting the free kick by junior Courtney Sheppard into the net.

Lady Govs fall to Belmont in 2014 finale On a night so cold even Austin Peay’s Canadian contingent seemed to feel it, Austin Peay State University women’s soccer team saw its 2014 season come to a close with a 4-2 loss to Belmont at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field. Austin Peay struck the first blow quickly, with sophomore Brianna Avitabile netting her first career goal just five minutes into the contest. The Hixson, Tenn., native took the feed from sophomore Gina Fabbro and launched a screamer that Belmont’s Lindsey Espe got a hand on but couldn’t keep out of the net. Unfortunately, the visitors would score four straight goals to take a commanding lead – the fourth time this season the Lady Govs were unable to make an early lead stand up. The barrage was started by Belicia Mendiola, who shot from the left side of the box just past the outstretched hands of freshman Lindsey Todd in net in the 30th minute, the first of two for the Belmont forward on the evening – she would later add an 84th minute goal to close out Belmont’s scoring ledger. After the break, Belmont’s Taylor Smith scored on a ricochet in the 48th minute, and Addison Cartwright added a 71st minute goal on a low cross from Meg Howard that found Cartwright in perfect position six yards from the net. Fabbro recorded a goal in the 86th minute, continuing her climb up the all-time charts. The goal was her season’s seventh – tied for sixth-most in a single season in Austin Peay history and equaling her freshman output – and her career’s 14th, tying her with Jessica Hosse (2004-07) and Emily Perkins (2011-12) for fourth all-time. The contest also served to close out the careers of seniors Claire Pultz and Frankie Carbajal, who both started their final matches at Morgan Brothers Soccer Field. Fabbro earns All-OVC nod Austin Peay State University sophomore Gina Fabbro has been named second-team All-Ohio Valley Conference by a vote of conference coaches and sports information directors. The Coquitlam, British Columbia, native enjoyed a sophomore campaign just as exemplary as her freshman effort, leading the Lady Govs in scoring with seven goals, tying her first-year mark and equaling the sixth-best single-season scoring effort in school history. Fabbro did much of her work in OVC play, scoring five goals against conference opponents (tied for fourth in the league) and totaling 11 points (tied for seventh). She started conference play with a bang, netting her season’s lone multigoal outing in the Lady Govs OVC-opener against Eastern Kentucky. Her season’s final goal in the season finale against Belmont was another milestone – it was her 14th career tally, tying her with Jessica Hosse (2004-07) and Emily Perkins (2011-12) for fourth all-time in Austin Peay history. She also equaled Hosse with 33 points, good for sixth all-time in scoring.
