HORTON HEEDS HIS CALLING BY COLBY WILSON
CHRIS HORTON MAJORS IN CORPORATE COMMUNICATIONS, BUT LET’S BE HONEST HERE—OVER THE LAST THREE SEASONS, HORTON’S MAIN CONCENTRATION HAS BEEN IN THE SWEET SCIENCE OF SHOT BLOCKING.
In the home finale of Horton’s junior season, the 6-8 center passed Josh Lewis for the all-time blocked shots record and enters his senior campaign second all-time in Ohio Valley Conference history with 262 blocks. He enters his final season averaging 2.88 blocks per game for his career and has blocked three or more shots in nearly half (45)
“It’s mind games. (Opponents) don’t know what I’m going to do, so I catch them when they least expect it. If (they) think I’m going to block it anyway, (they’ll) change the shot and miss it, and I’ll just go for the rebound.”
of his 91 career games, including a program single-game record 10 blocks last season against Berea.
“First, I make sure I know where my guy is,” Horton said. “I try to triangulate myself between my guy, the guy with the ball and the basket. If my guy is behind me or to the left, I step up and try to read the ballhandler’s eyes to anticipate whether he’s going to pass or shoot. If he looks to my guy before he makes the move he’s usually going to pass, I hesitate in the lane, which usually makes the guy with the ball hesitate, then I cut back to cut his passing lane off.
Foul-prone early in his career, Horton has learned to pick his spots. His mere presence in the paint is enough to alter how opponents operate when they get into the lane. And whether or not opposing coaches like it, Horton’s rim-protecting abilities are unmatched in the OVC. “I hear coaches complain when I block shots, saying I got them with the body or something, but my foul numbers have gone down each year,” Horton said. “I know everybody wants to go into me and draw fouls, so I have to pick and choose when to go for a block and when not to.
And how do you decide what to do in a split-second on the floor?
“If there’s a cutter moving toward the basket, it’s more than likely that he’s going to be involved in some way. If the ballhandler isn’t looking to either guy, he’s going to the rim. My job is to guard the space and protect the rim—I wait
for the play to develop and react. My thinking is to take away the highest percentage shot.” As good as Horton has been over three seasons—and he needs 170 rebounds to become the second member of Austin Peay’s 1,000-point, 1,000-rebound club (Tom Morgan, 1952-53, 55-58),
so ‘pretty good’ is an accurate of description of how his first three seasons have gone—he is now the elder statesman down low for the Governors and until the staff knows what they’ll be getting from Kenny Jones and other newcomers, Horton will bear an even greater responsibility. “It’s my job to do the work down low,” he said. “There’s no added pressure because I knew coming in that was going to be my role—get as many rebounds as a I can and be the defensive anchor and be the guy in the middle.” My job… my role. These phrases— of ownership and accountability, of being responsible for not only his fate but that of his team—are a far

Horton’s post-college prospects are multitude—overseas seems a safe bet, but Horton hopes his length, versatility and basketball IQ can put him on the raALL-TIME dar of NBA scouts. Adding consistency to his jumper IN OVC HISTORY WITH would make Horton a more attractive target in today’s pace-and-space NBA.

As good as he is, Horton knows that continual development will enhance his chanc es of success, whatever his professional future holds.

DOUBLE-DOUBLES IN HIS CAREER, AND RACKED UP HIS
cry from the understated Horton of yesteryear, who was content to blend into the background and defer the leadership role to upperclassmen. As one of only two seniors on the roster, and the only four-year senior, Horton has to take on a more vocal role if Austin Peay is to return to the OVC Tournament for the first time since 2012. Horton is well aware of how a tournament appearance would change perception, both of him and the program. For all his individual success, a tournament appearance is lacking on the senior’s resumé. And he bears his share of responsibility—and the accompanying frustration—of coming up short the last three years. “Every game, win or lose, I always feel like there’s something I could’ve done better, or I could’ve done something different in a certain situation that could’ve changed the outcome of the game,” he said. “I take losses especially hard, knowing I could’ve done more to avoid a loss. So there’s a lot of pressure to get back to the tournament—this is my last year, so I want to go out on top.”

WHY ARE YOU A GOV? “I felt like the program was good for me and it fit my game style. The coaching staff really made me feel welcomed.” HOW DO YOU TRY TO LIVE UP TO BEING A GOV EVERYDAY? “I just give it my all in the classroom and on the court.” BEFORE YOU CAME TO AUSTIN PEAY, WHAT WAS YOUR IDEA OF BEING A GOV? “I knew what Austin Peay was about. It was really my only Division I offer, so that played a big role in it. Also, my teammate from high school, Chris Porter-Bunton, welcomed me in.”

GRAY,
DEFENSE PARAMOUNT IN
MIDLICK’S FIRST SEASON BY COLBY WILSON
Tabbed as preseason Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year by CollegeSportsMadness. com and by the OVC’s media contingent, Gray enters her senior campaign after a junior season that saw her lead the Lady Govs in scoring (21.2 ppg), rebounding (6.1 rpg), assists (5.7 apg) and steals (3.7 spg)—the latter mark being the second-best average in the nation behind Weber State’s Regina Okoye.
GRAY is the lynchpin, having improved her shooting percentages, rebounding rate and assist average in each of her first three seasons. Even marginal improvement as a senior could make her the second Lady Gov to crack the 2,000-point mark, the first member of the 1,000-point, 500-assist club. She’s also a handful of steals away from the school career record. So if all else fails, Midlick can rely on her to make some things happen. “When the shot clock is winding down or when things break down offensively, you need a player that you can just give the ball to and tell her to go create a shot for herself or a teammate,” Midlick said. “She’s being more vocal, directing traffic more on offense and I’ve
heard her more on defense. She’s not going to change who she is in terms of being quiet or unassuming, but the team follows her and when she says something, it means something to this team.” Gray is not the only player Midlick can rely on, although if that were the case Austin Peay would still be in pretty good shape. While a rash of preseason injuries has zapped the roster of much of its depth, what remains is mostly upper-class talent that can be leaned on as proven, reliable contributors. Those include Madison Rich, April Rivers, Brianne Alexander, Sydney Gooch and Lauren Maki, with reinforcements expected as Tearra Banks, Jacey Scott, Jennifer Nwokocha and Beth Rates return to health.
The Austin Peay problem last season was not on the offensive end—led by Gray’s 21.2 points per game but buoyed by continued excellence all over the floor, Austin Peay’s 70.3 ppg was third in the OVC in 2014-15. Unfortunately, the Lady Govs allowed 74.6 ppg—330th in the nation—and Midlick has spent the fall teaching team defense to add to Gray, last season’s OVC Defensive Player of the Year, and her considerable individual defensive skill set.
“WHEN THE SHOT CLOCK IS WINDING DOWN OR WHEN THINGS BREAK DOWN OFFENSIVELY, YOU NEED A PLAYER THAT YOU CAN JUST GIVE THE BALL TO AND TELL HER TO GO CREATE A SHOT FOR HERSELF OR A TEAMMATE.”
“They’ve tried to do what we’ve asked them to do defensively,” Midlick said. “We’ve emphasized defense with them and they’ve really responded. They’ve had a good attitude in practice, learning what we’re doing on offense and giving a lot of effort and energy on the defensive end. They’ve been receptive to it and worked hard at it.” Midlick knows the community’s expectations surrounding Austin Peay hoops are always high. As a staffer when the men’s basketball team ran the OVC regular-season table in 2003-04, he’s seen first-hand the galvanizing effect it can have on the city. That passion and energy – largely dormant since the last Lady Govs basketball championship in 2010 –are necessary to breathing life into a program.
AS THE NEW COACH, MIDLICK UNDERSTANDS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF BRINGING THAT EXCITEMENT BACK TO THE FANS. “They (the fans) support the team and the young women on it,” he said. “They’re looking forward to watching them and I think they want to see a team they know is competing at 100 percent and competing as a team and representing the university well.”
