AFTER A FUN, MAGICAL SEASON, JEREMIAH OATSVALL FEELS NO PRESSURE TO LEAD ANOTHER

GOVERNORS MAGIC ACT BY COLBY WILSON

On the one hand, there’s everything else about Jeremiah Oatsvall – your basic All-American kid with outstanding athletic ability, scholastic achievements for days, movie-star good looks, spends his free time doing good works not only in the Clarksville community but on overseas mission trips. And on the other hand, there’s the card tricks. I’m going to start with the card tricks, if you don’t mind. You should check out Austin Peay’s YouTube Channel for a variety of reasons, but one of the best is a series of videos Oatsvall did with offensive lineman Charles Mosley last year. The JO and Big Chuck Show showcased some pretty cool card tricks (and how about a hand for Big Chuck, whose looks of amazement at every turn deserve some kind of award all their own), but also showcased some of the same things that allows all those other qualities to shine. There’s the natural curiosity. When Oatsvall was in middle school, he and his buddies would play cards and his father Scott would show them some card tricks. Jeremiah picked up a couple of tricks, but the talent lay largely dormant until his senior year of high school.

“I started learning some stuff on my own, and I was decent as a middle-schooler and then I put it down for a couple of years,” Jeremiah said. “My senior year of high school, I picked it back up again – I was committed to Austin Peay, so trying to get into a school was out of the picture, so my nights were more free. I worked on my tricks and I could see I still had it in me, could do a lot more now that my hands were a little bigger and I could comprehend a little better. I started getting back into it, started working a couple that I remembered and looked up some more and started doing them on some of my classmates. “When I brought it to Austin Peay, nobody knew anything about that entertainment realm. I started showing my roommates and they thought it was super-interesting. I was studying it a lot, about how the mind thinks about different cards, and when we started the show I had to be at the top of my game. We were going to do it with each lineman, but Big Chuck was so good we decided to stay with him.” That flows right into his desire to give – when it comes to card tricks, he just wants to make people happy for a few minutes, give some joy, excitement and wonder to their daily lives. This, a well-done card trick is guaranteed to do (especially with Big

Chuck providing a real-life avatar of the wide-eyed wonder people experience at these moments). In 2017, he gave Austin Peay football fans something they had been pining for since… well, longer than many of them had been alive. Thanks in no small part to Oatsvall’s Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year performance, the Govs achieved not only national relevance but were legitimately snubbed – I said it, selection committee, and I’d shout it into a megaphone from a rooftop in Indianapolis, snubbed – for an FCS playoff berth. To credit Oatsvall with the entirety of this turnaround would be unfair to the teammates that helped get him there, the coaches that brought him to Clarksville and to Oatsvall himself, because that’s a lot to put on a young man with a half-dozen starts to his name. But if there was a moment that lent an air of legitimacy to what was going on in Clarksville, that began to bring the long hoped-for turnaround into crystallization, it was the day Oatsvall signed his National Letter of Intent. Easily the state’s best prep quarterback, the two-time state champion and two-time championship MVP had all manner of options at his disposal come Signing Day. But that decision had already been made, and Oatsvall felt a confidence he could not quite articulate at the time in why he threw his lot in with a team that had gone 0-11 the previous season.

(

tough to explain it because I couldn’t put my finger on it myself. All I could say was, ‘I feel like something special is going on there. Just trust me.’ My parents understood. But I couldn’t put words around it. Now, you can see exactly why, after the season we had, the fun we have after wins, the work we put in. It was one of the biggest decisions I ever made, and definitely the right one.” One magical season – eight wins, a Sgt. York Trophy and an OVC Freshman of the Year honor – later, I’d say he was right. It should be unfair to wonder about what Oatsvall and the Govs will do for an encore to 2017. Never again will Austin Peay fans endure anything resembling a 1-47 stretch. Those Govs led the faithful out of the wilderness of college football irrelevance. To hope for even more success feels almost selfish, given what came before. But here again, you see the influence of the cards. When Oatsvall wants to be good at something, he is – his competitiveness simply won’t allow for any other outcome. He won’t cop to that, because the outcome is not what he’s about. It’s the process that matters – do things right and the outcome should be practically preordained.

)

I feel like something special is going on there. Just trust me.

“There were so many intangibles about Austin Peay that you just can’t put on paper,” he said. “To recruit me as hard as Austin Peay did when they had been 0-11, before the coach had ever coached a down there, there was something about it. I honestly didn’t want to give it a chance at first; when they offered me, I just wanted to say, ‘Thank you,’ and move on to see what was bigger and better. But Coach (Will) Healy and Coach (Wes) Satterfield kept reaching out to me, kept encouraging me to come up and visit and give them a chance. I came up here and it totally blew my mind, the way the coaches handled themselves and how they talked about a program they had never even coached at was unbelievable. Their plan for me as an individual was different from any other school; Austin Peay was up front about it – if I wanted to be the dude, I had the right, if I earned it, to take it and run with it. They trusted me and believed in me. When somebody wants you, it’s different than if somebody just offers you. There was something about Coach Healy that was just a little bit different than all the other coaches recruiting me; I couldn’t put my finger on it, but I could feel it and I went with my heart. People can see now what I and my whole recruiting class and the class before me saw.

“I don’t feel any pressure,” he said of replicating his freshman year success. “I’ve been playing this position for a long time. Early in my career, I felt like I had to do more than what I was supposed to do, and that made me into the player I am today. But knowing the coaches have recruited unbelievable players around me, it’s my job to do exactly what I have to do. I don’t catch a ball, I don’t take a handoff, I don’t block anybody – my job is to run the offense, get the ball in the playmaker’s hands and let them do the work. When you look at it like that, the pressure fades away. “There’s pressure to do well, because you know there will be eyes on you, but in the grand scheme of things if you just do your job the right way, efficiently and with poise, the offense will have opportunities to be successful. But that’s not pressure – pressure is being at Fort Campbell, pressure is going overseas and fighting for our country with your life on the line. This is a game; you’re supposed to have fun with it.” Fun. If there’s another thing you can bank on getting from Oatsvall, it’s fun. It’s fun to watch him play. It’s fun to watch him and the Govs succeed. And if the sophomore has anything to say about it, 2018 is going to be more fun than ever.

“People just couldn’t comprehend what my choice was,Fand it was E AT URE STORY
