FOR A GROUP OF AUSTIN PEAY ATHLETES, THEIR SUMMER PLANS TOOK THEM HALF WAY ACROSS THE WORLD TO HELP THE MOST VULNERABLE
We have it pretty good here, all things considered. Food in the refrigerator. Clean clothes in the closet. A roof over our collective heads. Little things, sometimes taken for granted, that make life a little more livable every day. Now take all that away. Then take almost everything other personal effect away. Then strip away infrastructure, health care, clean water and you’ll get a sense of what’s happening in Uganda every day. There are 147 million plus vulnerable children world wide and the 147 TEAM exists to provide critical needs to show the love of Christ to children in the United States. The founder of 147 TEAM, Gwen Oatsvall, formerly co-founded 147 Million Orphans that served vulnerable children internationally for over nine years. She’s also Austin Peay quarterback Jeremiah Oatsvall’s mom. Oatsvall has been going on mission trips for years, and last summer he took a number of his Austin Peay teammates along with him for an eye-opening journey of self-discovery and service around Masindi and Kampala, in the region between Lake Albert and Lake Victoria. Obviously, international missions are not an easy undertaking. Passports had to be acquired. Medically, even these perfectly healthy football players needed shots and prescriptions before they would be

allowed to go (“I had to get three shots and I want everyone to know that,” said tight end Caleb Florence) and then an 18-hour plane ride to Uganda. All worth it. “This being my first trip, I was nervous and I wasn’t sure how to interact,” said tight end Elijah Brown. “I had been to Cancun one time, but that was really the only time I’d been out of the country. I went on a cruise, but that’s a little different than flying 18 hours. But God being with us, the language barrier didn’t mean anything. The kids loved seeing us and we loved seeing them.” The children they worked were a light to each player. Impoverished kids, with no shoes and one set of clothes to wear every day, they cherished their interactions with the guys each time they met, whether playing soccer or working around the classrooms. The Governors in Africa got just as much out of the experience as the kids did. “The kids were so grateful we were there, being with them,” said running back Ahmaad Tanner. “They smiled the whole time. Most of them don’t have much, most of them wore the same clothes every day, but they were still always smiling and so grateful every day.”

There was a work component to this as well. Utilizing the players’ physical strength, the missionaries poured cement for the foundation of a school, plowed fields by hand and laid fencing for local farmers. Strenuous stuff, and they still woke up early every day to get in some cardio and strength work (which should please strength coach Chris Laskowski). Not only were they able to build things, the missionaries were able to leave behind some knowledge for the locals to make their lives easier.
a relationship and now you’re lifelong friends. It’s just crazy how it impacts your life. “My ancestors are possibly from there, I could’ve been one of those kids running around barefooted, it makes me feel blessed as an individual. God could’ve done anything he wanted to with me, but he put me here and did it in the way he had set for my life.” Already, they want to do more. A trip to Honduras has already been planned for next June. The life-changing events in Africa have added scope and perspective to these young men, and in a time and era where they might otherwise become self-involved, they’ve become all about helping others.
“The thing is, we don’t want them to become dependent on us,” Brown said. “We want them to be able to work without us, and we want to make an impact that will last the rest of their lives. So we would plow a garden and show them techniques for plant“MY FRESHMAN YEAR, I ing and caring for it. Just little THOUGHT EVERYTHING things, but things that made a big difference.” WAS HARD. “My freshman year, I thought everything was hard,” Florence said. “But I look at everything so differently now. I always have those people “We got a lot closer than we in the back of my mind, and were before,” Tanner said. “Here, so much of what we do is football how they’re in a way worse situation than I’m in. I don’t have to but with something like that, you get to know a person a lot better.” worry about anything; they have to worry about a thousand things. The interactions were some of the most rewarding these young men have ever experienced, but that just made leaving Uganda even more difficult by the end of the trip.
“Most Americans take things for granted. I’ve learned to be more grateful for everything.”
“The hardest part is leaving,” Florence said. “We developed these relationships with people on the whole other side of the world. One of the guys still texts me to this day. You get over there, you make
