BIG MOMENTS BRYANT
IT’S BEEN A FALL WHIRLWIND FOR JUANTARIUS BRYANT A SCHOLARSHIP, AN ENGAGEMENT AND THE SEASON OF HIS CAREER BY COLBY WILSON
Juantarius Bryant is having himself a fall to remember. That’s not just down to what he’s done on the football field, although 39 tackles through the first seven games are certainly nothing to discredit. But as good as he’s been— getting starts, getting stops, becoming a much-needed veteran linchpin in the secondary—the on-field product can probably rank no higher than third in his autumnal achievements. In late August, former Ohio State standout Maurice Clarett was at Austin Peay to talk to the Governor football team. Once the toast of college football and now a sought-after public speaker, Clarett called Bryant to the front of the room to give his insight on being a walk-on football player, the commitment and drive required to not only push oneself to be the best but to endure the grind— the early weights, early practices, late nights studying—required to make it. Then Clarett announced to the room that Bryant had been awarded a scholarship. The pandemonium that ensued was one of those moments that make college athletics special. For Bryant, it not only eased a huge burden but validated all the hard work he’d put in as a Governor. “I was speechless,” he said recently, recounting the experience. “I wasn’t expecting that at all. I wasn’t sure how I was going to pay to confirm my classes, how I would pay for food or bills. I was tired of being a burden to my people. I didn’t want to quit, but I was getting overwhelmed. I’d been working my butt off and I was starting to wonder, man, when are things going to work out?” It had been a long time coming for Bryant. He walked on in head coach Will Healy’s first spring—observers of that first session can still remember the gold cleats adorning the feet of the dreadlocked Bryant—after a long period of uncertainty concerning not only football but college in general. “Coming out of high school, I had some offers and was a pretty good player,” he said. “Things went downhill with my ACT score; it wasn’t high enough to accept any scholarship offers, anywhere, including one I had from here. Everything went down the drain and I was questioning if I would even come to college.
F E AT U R E S T O R Y
“My dad knew I had offers, but he didn’t know about the ACT thing. When I told him about that, he said, ‘We need to do whatever we need to do to get you into college.’ We ended up getting me admitted on the Tennessee Promise, which was great but I couldn’t play sports on that scholarship, and it was a struggle to pay tuition; I had to use all my savings just to confirm my classes once I walked on.” It’s here another hero joins our story: Jamecia Betty, Bryant’s then-girlfriend. Together four years, she stepped up to help him out when the financial burden became critical. Bryant credits her for putting her life on hold and paying the bills while he pursued his degree and his dream of playing football. Her sacrifice got him to where he is today. In the aftermath of Austin Peay’s win against Tennessee State on Oct. 6, Bryant—with the help of a video produced by Austin Peay’s video dynamo Taylor Wiseman and played on the jumbotron at Fortera Stadium—dropped to one knee on the home sideline and asked Jamecia to marry him. She said yes. “(Jamecia) did such tremendous things for me during the walk-on process,” he said. “It would be hard to find any other woman who would be willing to sacrifice that much for someone. I’ve tried to process it all and it just doesn’t seem real; I’m just overwhelmed with joy.” Like I said up top—that is a lot of big life moments in a short period of time. But Bryant, mature beyond his years, is more than capable
of anything life is going to throw at him. Born in a rough section of East Nashville, Bryant did not come up with a silver spoon. His was a hardscrabble upbringing, featuring life in the projects, his mom’s house catching fire, negative influences and not a lot in the way of privilege. His mom, Donita, worked hard to move up in her career before finally being able to rent a house on Saunders Avenue near Maplewood High School. She also laid the foundation for the incredible dedication Juantarius has shown at Austin Peay. His dad Juan was his positive male role model—he, and Juantarius’ football coaches. Juan helped him keep his head on straight, guided him toward the right choice, taught him how to be a man. Juan’s influence, Donita’s work ethic… Juantarius has taken the best of those around him and become a thoroughbred, and he’s intent on paying it forward. “I feel very blessed,” he said. “I was raised well. I developed a strong will throughout my childhood, I was raised not to quit. People have a tendency not to finish it out when things get tough, but I’ve always been the type of person to stick it out no matter what. In the areas I grew up in, a lot of kids didn’t have positive role models and I feel like it’s on me to be that for my siblings, so they don’t have to go through some things other people would have to go through.”
