MORGAN BROTHERS SOCCER FIELD

Morgan Brothers Soccer Field opened in 2005, providing Austin Peay arguably the best soccer pitch in the Ohio Valley Conference. The field once served as a practice for Austin Peay football and came about because of the generosity of the Morgan Brothers Construction, who provided the excavation and field preparation for the facility’s construction. How good is the Lady Govs field? The Tennessee Titans chose Austin Peay and the Morgan Brothers Soccer Field to serve as its summer training camp home in 2006—the only time the Titans have trained outside of Nashville since arriving in the Music City. APSU began playing soccer in 2002 and for the first three seasons the Lady Govs played its home matches at Heritage Park, a city-maintained facility. But as the program matured, an on-campus field became a necessity and with the help of the Morgan Brothers, that dream was realized. The Lady Govs first victory at Morgan Bros. Soccer Field came on Sep. 23, 2005 against rival Murray State. Erica Dengler scored 27 seconds into the match and added a late goal for a 3-1 APSU victory. In 2006, the Lady Govs lost only once at home. In fact, Austin Peay was better than .500 in each of their first three seasons in which they called Morgan Bros. Field home. The 2010 squad posted the program’s best-ever home record, going 8-1-0 on the home pitch. Tatiana Ariza scored six of her 11 goals in Clarksville and Austin Peay allowed just one goal at home, with Carley Newman earning five shut outs.

2014 LADY GOVS PROSPECTUS Replacing the Great A program-record eight seniors departed last season, including 60 percent of the goal scoring and 55 percent of the assists from the 2013 Ohio Valley Conference semifinalists. Among them were four-time All-OVC choices Tatiana and Natalia Ariza, as well as Joceline and Andy Quiceno. What to do when the winningest four-year class (48-27-5) in program history is no longer around? Head coach Kelley Guth retooled quickly over the winter, adding a stacked nineperson signing class for the fall. Among them are another Fabbro (Sophia, sister of sophomore Gina) and five all-state performers that figure to get plenty of opportunities early in their Austin Peay careers. That’s to take nothing away from a talented group of returnees for the Lady Govs. Gina Fabbro was an OVC AllNewcomer selection last season, and joined the versatile Shelby Olszewski in earning All-OVC Tournament honors last November. Two other Canadian-bread players (Courtney Sheppard and Nikki Filippone) were vital contributors last season and will be counted on to shoulder an even bigger load this year. The Forwards: Good-bye Tatiana Tatiana Ariza will be difficult to replace. She finished her career as the second-leading scorer in OVC history, earning four first-team All-OVC nods and 2012 OVC Offensive Player of the Year honors during her career. A single individual would have a hard time replicating that, but a deep Austin Peay side should be able to keep the scoring rate at a high pace. That will start with Gina Fabbro, the leading returning scorer from 2013 (7g, 3 a), who teamed with Ariza and Andy Quiceno last season and now finds herself seeking new running mates for the 2014 campaign. Sophomore Merritt Monger played well in limited action last season, but will have to carry more of a burden this year. Shelby Olszewski also may see time up front in addition to her duties along the backline. Four of the signees are sure to be contributors up top, including a second Fabbro. Sophia, younger sister of Gina, signed her National Letter of Intent in April and could be used anywhere from center back to forward. She won’t be the only newcomer expected to take a prominent scoring role for Austin Peay in 2014. Two Tennessee natives -- Morgan Jackson (Spring Hill) and Kirstin Robertson (Harpeth Hall) -- will get opportunities early on, as will Kentucky-bred Caroline Wistrom, a two-time KHSAA All-State honoree from Louisville. Kate Carney, a jack-of-all-trades from White House, could join them up front or find a home elsewhere on the pitch.

6

The Midfield: Deepest position expected to be a source of strength in 2014 Losing Natalia Ariza, Joceline Quiceno and Morgan Zigelsky will be a tough hurdle to overcome, but the midfield undoubtedly returns as the most battle-tested part of the lineup for the 2014 year. Two second-year players and a senior that each started at least 10 contests in 2013 return to give the middle of the park some leadership and talent. That begins with senior Frankie Carbajal, who emerged last season as a potent part of the offense, knocking home the game-winning goal in Austin Peay’s thrillling win against UT Martin. Junior Courtney Sheppard enters her second year in Clarksville after transferring in from Canada last spring. She tied for the team lead with four assists last season and is sure to own a wing spot opposite Carbajal this year. In the center role, Mary Ruth Locastro became the rock last year, starting all 19 matchhes and playing 1522 minutes, most by a returner. As holding midfield, Locastro’s experience will make her even more valuable in 2014. Brianna Avitabile figures to see increased roles in 2014 after playing sparingly as freshmen. Local product Mallory Burman from Clarksville Academy will push for playing time, as could Carney and Maggie Ethridge from Evansville. The Defense: Known and Unknown Statistically, Nikki Filippone had one of the finest campaigns in Austin Peay history in 2013, posting a 0.80 goalsagainst average that was the second-best single-season mark in program history. However, Emily Kink, Corey Osborn and Joceline Quiceno are gone and the Lady Govs backline will primarily turn to the 2013 reserve corps to replace them. Thankfully, it is a talented second unit that will fill some of the starting spots in 2014. Claire Pultz saw time in every match last season, logging nearly 1000 minutes off the bench and should be well-suited for a starting role in 2014. Olszewski also will see quite a bit of time, possibly starting here or up front depending on who emerges for the Lady Govs. Junior Taylor Van Wagner returns from an injury that kept her out of all but two contests last season; a rising star before injury curtailed her campaign, she looks to reclaim her starting role for the 2014 season. Natalie Smith will challenge for playing time this season and could snag a starting spot alongside Pultz, Olszewski and Van Wagner. If not, then freshmen such as Carney, Ethridge, Fabbro and Beth Webster, another Evansville native, could work their way into the starting 11. Filippone wrested control of the starting keeper position away last season and doesn’t seem to be interested in giving it up in 2014. However, sophomore Katie Emig and freshmen McKenzie Derouen from Louisville and Lindsey Todd from Ravenwood High School will push her in practice and vie for the back-up keeper job.

THE OHIO VALLEY CONFERENCE Now in its 65th year, the Ohio Valley Conferencecontinues to build on the success that hasmade it the nation’s eighth-oldest NCAA Division I conference. In May 2011 the Conference expanded for the second time in four years, adding Belmont University which begins competition in the 2012-13 academic year. The addition of Belmont gives the OVC 12 members, the most the league has had at one time in its illustrious history. The move added a second team in the city of Nashville and was the first addition to the league since Southern Illinois University Edwardsville joined in 2008. The 2009-10 school year saw a change in leadership as Beth DeBauche was named the seventh full-time Commissioner in league history on July 28, 2009. She is currently one of just five females to be the head of a Division I conference, and one of just eight to lead a Division I conference all-time. The last three commissioners of the OVC have moved onto jobs as the commissioner of the Big Ten, Big 12 and the Mid-American Conferences. The OVC’s proud history dates back to 1948, but seeds for the new league were actually planted in 1941. It was then that Roy Stewart, the athletics director at Murray State, Charles “Turkey” Hughes, the athletics director at Eastern Kentucky, and Kelly Thompson, the public relations director at Western Kentucky, first broached the idea of forming a new conference. Discussions were put on hold by World War II, but reemerged Feb. 27-28, 1948 at the Kentucky Hotel in Louisville as the three original institutions combined with Morehead State, Louisville and Evansville to form the OVC. In the 1950s, the OVC became a pioneer on a much more significant scale socially. During times of racial segregation, league member Morehead State became one of the first non-traditionally black midsouthern institutions to accept a black student. In 1958, Marshall Banks earned athletically-related aid at Morehead, which signed a second black athlete, Howard Murphy, a year later. In 1961, Murphy earned all-conference recognition as a halfback in football. With racial barriers broken, the rest of the institutions in the league began to provide educational and athletic opportunities to African-Americans. The playing field is not the only place where OVC athletes are working hard. The league also recognizes excellence in the classroom. Six Scholar-Athlete Awards are presented yearly to male and female athletes, while others are commended for their academic success by being Medal of Honor recipients or earning a spot on the Com-

missioner’s Honor Roll. Additionally, the women’s athletics began a rebirth on the league annually presents one institutional national scene as the NCAA began sponsorAcademic Achievement Award, as well as ing and marketing women’s sports. The vision of leadership demonstrated by the Founding Fathers in 1948 remains alive today as the Ohio Valley Conference prepares for the future. One example is in regard to the current trend in collegiate athletics administration for increased involvement of university presidents in setting policies and making rules. The presidents of OVC institutions, however, have always governed the Conference, long before presidential governance became a national theme. The Ohio Valley Conference sponsors the following sports: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis and track for Office of the Commissioner men, and basketball, cross country, golf, 278 Franklin Road, Suite 103 soccer, softball, tennis, track and volleyball Brentwood, TN 37027 for women. KELLEY GUTH

Head Coach 13th Season Florida State, 1996

Entering her 13th season, Kelley Guth remains the only head coach in Austin Peay women’s soccer history. After overseeing the best four-year stretch in school history that saw Austin Peay athletes earn 13 All-OVC honors, an OVC Offensive Player of the Year and OVC Freshman of the Year award, culminating in a 48-27-5 mark and two OVC Championship match appearances, Guth turns the page on a new chapter in Austin Peay soccer history. The 2013 season, which ended with a top-four OVC Tournament finish for the third time in four seasons, saw the graduations of Tatiana and Natalia Ariza, Andy and Joceline Quiceno and others that will be tough to replace. The 2012 season was highlighted by Austin Peay’s second OVC Championship match appearance in three seasons. Tatiana Ariza won Austin Peay’s first OVC Player of the Year honor, and the Lady Govs finished second in league play. That helped erase the eighthplace finish Austin Peay earned during an injury-plagued 2011 campaign. Guth’s 2010 team was sparked by OVC Freshman of the Year Tatiana Ariza, along with first-team pick Natalia Ariza and second-team All-OVC selection Joceline Quiceno. Those three freshman, along with a nationally-ranked defense, set the tone for undoubtedly the most successful Lady Govs soccer team in program history. After appearing in the OVC tournament twice previously, the 2010 season was a breath of fresh air for Guth. Her pedigree on the pitch as both a player and coach has always been above reproach, which is why her team’s recent success was so important to the program after winning only one game during an injury-plagued 2009 season. Her coaching career began at Florida State University High School in 1997, where she coached for three seasons. While coaching at FSU High School, she also played in the W-League, a national amateur league, for the Fort Collins Force. With the Force, Guth received all-tournament honors as well as player of the week honors twice, as the Force took home the 1998 W-League championship. Guth also played for the Florida State women’s club team and was named women’s open division MVP of the National IntramuralRecreation Sports Association. Guth received her initial Division I soccer coaching opportunity with Ohio Valley Conference member Southeast Missouri under her former FSU head coach Heather Nelson. As an assistant coach in 2000 and 2001, Guth was in charge of recruiting, academic oversight of student-athletes as well as over-

seeing all travel arrangements while assisting in practice with all positions on the field. Guth’s inaugural season with the Lady Govs was indeed a challenge, finishing 0-13-3; the team scored only nine goals. However, the Lady Govs steadily improved during their second season, posting five wins and 25 goals. In 2004, the Lady Govs continued to mature on the field under Guth’s guidance. After a rough start, they finished strong with a conference victory at Murray State. The Lady Govs posted the program’s best record yet, 8-9-2 overall and 1-6-1 in the league, scoring 29 goals. Two years later, in 2006, the Lady Govs went 5-4 in league play, before hitting a two-year OVC slump. The 2008 season was particularly frustrating as the Lady Govs drop eight one-goal matches. In 2009, the Lady Govs were challenged with overcoming a number of injuries and that was no different for the 2010 slate. In fact, during the 2010 OVC championship game, Guth was relegated to only one substitute for the final match after Joceline Quiceno suffered a knee injury early the final contest. Guth began her collegiate soccer career at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, B.C., where she led her squad as a two-time NAIA first-team All-America selection and twice selected conference player of the year. In 1993, her first season with the Clan, Guth was an NAIA All-America honorable mention. She improved her second season as the Clan claimed a conference championship and she collected first-team All-America honors. In 1995, she again received first-team All-America honors, while Simon Fraser placed fifth in the NAIA national tournament. In 1996, she transferred for one season at Florida State University and left her mark in those record books as well. In one season, Guth scored 14 goals, including six game-winners which are third-most all-time at FSU. Her accomplishments as a player and coach continued to be recognized as she was inducted into the Delta (British Columbia) Sports Hall of Fame, in June 2004. Guth was one of 10 inductees into the inaugural class, selected from a group of 60. In March 2009, Guth was appointed as the OVC’s representative for the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). Guth, who also assists the Clarksville Fusion Futbol Club in their player development program, currently resides in Clarksville with her husband Matt, who works as a correctional officer for the Davidson County Sheriff’s Department in Nashville.

JEREMY SULLIVAN Assistant Coach 8th Season Jacksonville State, 2003 Jeremy Sullivan is in his eighth season as the Lady Govs goalkeepers coach and recruiting coordinator. His work on and off the field during the 2010 season led to his being named the Midwest Region College Assistant Coach of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association. The 2010 season saw the Lady Govs advance to the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament championship game, in part due to a strong defense and brilliant work in net. Austin Peay led the league in goals-against-average (.687) which ranked 23rd nationally, shutout percentage (.591), which ranked eighth-best nationally, and save percentage (.850), which ranked 24th nationally. During Sullivan’s tenure as Lady Govs goalkeeper coach, Austin Peay has set program records in goals against average (0.68, 2010) and shutouts (13, 2010). The Lady Govs have reached the OVC Tournament in three of the last four seasons, including championship match appearances in 2010 and 2012. Sullivan played a large role in recruiting the 2010 class that produced Austin Peay’s first OVC Freshman of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year, Tatiana Ariza. Her sister Natalia -- who played with Tatiana for the Colombian National Team at the 2012 London Olympics -- also was a three-time first-team All-OVC pick, while three other players from that class (Andy Quiceno, Joceline Quiceno and Haylee Shoaff) would earn all-conference honors during their Austin Peay careers. Sullivan came to Austin Peay after two years as a graduate assistant at Belmont, where he earned his master’s of education while serving as the Bruins goalkeepers coach. The Alabama native played college soccer at Wallace State Community College, in Hanceville, Ala., where he led the Lions to a 15th national ranking in his final season. He then transferred to Jacksonville State, where he completed his degree in recreation administration. As an undergrad, Sullivan worked three seasons as a student assistant. In that time, Sullivan also worked at Donoho School as the head coach. While at Belmont, Sullivan also was the head coach of the Brentwood Eclipse U13. He holds his NSCAA Advanced National Diploma and a USSF Class B license, the latter of which was obtained during Spring 2014. Sullivan lives in Clarksville with his wife, Jessica, and their daughters Lyla, age 6, and Remi, age 2.

2013 HEADLINES Lady Govs picked second in preseason poll After advancing to the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament championship for the second time in three seasons, Austin Peay State University women’s soccer team was picked to finish second in the 2013 OVC Preseason Poll of head coaches and sports information directors. Two-time defending OVC Tournament champion UT Martin was picked to make it three straight, topping the poll with 18 first-place votes and 198 points. For the second time in program history, Austin Peay earned first-place votes in the preseason poll, picking up four votes and 177 total points en route to its second-place standing. Southeast Missouri (148 points), Eastern Kentucky (137) and SIU Edwardsville (133) rounded out the preseason top five. Belmont, beginning its second season in the OVC, was predicted to snag the final spot in the conference tournament with 119 points. Jacksonville State (84), Morehead State (71), Eastern Illinois (60), Tennessee Tech (44) and Murray State (35) were all prognosticated to be on the out-

side looking in come tournament time. Ariza hits milestone in season-opening win A slow start and a lightning delay couldn’t keep Austin Peay’s high-octane offense down in the season opener against Chattanooga. Behind two Tatiana Ariza goals, the Lady Govs downed the Mocs, 4-0, to get the young season started on the right foot. Austin Peay wasted no time netting its first 2013 goal, netting its first less than seven minutes into the campaign. Freshman Mary Ruth Locastro found senior Tatiana Ariza’s feet, and the Colombian striker slid a shot into the low right corner for her 40th career Austin Peay goal. She reached a hallowed Ohio Valley Conference mark as well, becoming just the fourth player in OVC history to record 100 career points. A lightning delay broke up play in the first half, sending both teams into the bowels of Finley Stadium more than 90 minutes. Both sides were rusty upon returning to play, with 2014 AUSTIN PEAY SOCCER • LETSGOPEAY.COM •

2013 HEADLINES neither able to mount much of an offensive challenge over the first half’s final third. Freshman Gina Fabbro would find the net for the first time in the regular season in the 55th minute. Senior Emily Kink lobbed a long pass that Fabbro was able to run under. With Chattanooga keeper Lauren Thomas out of position, Fabbro tapped it in for her first regular-season goal as a Lady Gov – she was credited with two goals during exhibition play, scoring one against Alabama and the other against Freed Hardeman. Austin Peay’s final two goals came in rapid succession after Guth moved Shelby Olszewski up to an attacking position. Olszewski assisted on Ariza’s second goal of the evening, quick-kicking a free kick that caught the Chattanooga defense napping, before scoring an unassisted tally after beating her man to a free ball heading toward the Mocs net. Olszewski went on to win OVC Defensive Player of the Week honors for her work. Sophomore Nikki Filippone and freshman Katie Emig teamed up for the shutout, with Filippone recording two saves in 70 minutes and Emig making an athletic stop to preserve the shutout in her 20 minutes of work.

Fabbro set the tone early, breaking away near midfield and going the distance for her season’s second goal. Austin Peay has not only scored first in every match this season, the Lady Govs have scored their opening salvo within the first 11 minutes of each match. The second half belonged to Ariza, with the Colombian netting two more goals to give her five in three 2013 matches. Her first, in the 53rd minute, came via a Zigelsky through-ball that UALR keeper Kylie Wilson tried to beat Ariza to. The senior forward collected it and all but dribbled it into an empty net to give the Lady Govs a bit of insurance. Senior Andy Quiceno found Ariza on a cross to the left post in the 66th minute, where she buried it into the nylon for her second multi-goal game in 2013, and the 11th of her Austin Peay career. Splitting time in net, Filippone (66 minutes) and Emig (13 minutes) made one save apiece to split the shutout.

Early goals stand up in Lady Govs road win A stingy Austin Peay defense made two early goals stand up on the road at Appalachian State. The Lady Govs held on for a 2-1 victory at ASU Stadium in a hard-fought battle that concluded the season-opening road swing against a pair of Southern Conference opponents. The Lady Govs claimed victory in their first two regular season contests for the third time in the last four seasons. The victory against Appalachian State is Austin Peay’s second in as many seasons. Tatiana Ariza got the scoring started again for the Lady Govs against the Mountaineers. She collected a Courtney Sheppard miss in the 11th minute and slid it past Appalachian State’s Megan Roberson for an early goal, her third in the season’s first two games. Ariza assisted on senior Morgan Zigelsky’s 19th minute goal as well. Zigelsky blasted a shot from the left side of the box into the upper right side of the net for her season’s first goal. The Mountaineers got on the board early in the second half thanks to a Julia Holz goal, coming via through-ball from Jenna Caudle in the 54th minute. However, that would be all the offense the Mountaineers could muster against sophomore Filippone and freshman Emig, who split time in net. Filippone made four first-half saves, while Emig allowed one goal in 45 second-half minutes.

Lady Govs earn hard-fought tie at WKU Austin Peay got another goal from Tatiana Ariza and a stout Lady Govs defense buckled down in overtime to salvage a 1-1 against Western Kentucky at the WKU Soccer Complex. Austin Peay controlled possession for much of the first half, taking six shots and forcing two Nora Abolins saves – Ariza and Andy Quiceno each put one shot on net for the Lady Govs in the opening half. The Hilltoppers managed just two shots in the half, neither on net. The Lady Govs broke through in the 60th minute, with Ariza taking the feed from Kink and finding the back of the net for her season’s sixth goal. The Bogota, Colombia native scored at least one goal in each of the Lady Govs first four outings in 2013. Kink would later earn OVC Defensive Player of the Week honors. Western Kentucky would answer just over two minutes later. Christine Gordon collected a rebound and dished it to Lauren Moats, who beat Filippone for the equalizer. The rest of the second half passed in much the same way as the first – with Austin Peay assaulting the net and being denied time and again. The Lady Govs outshot the Hilltoppers 7-2 for the rest of regulation, but could not put the game-winner into the net. Western Kentucky was the aggressor in overtime, outshooting Austin Peay 6-1 during the two 10-minute periods and forcing two Filippone saves, but Austin Peay showed its mettle defensively to salvage a road tie. Filippone saved four shots for the Lady Govs in 110 minutes, the first time in her career she played an entire match in net.

Lights Out: Lady Govs Dominate against UALR The lights went out in the 79th minute. But for Austin Peay, the first 78 minutes could not have been more electrifying. Austin Peay added two more Tatiana Ariza goals after an early tally from Fabbro to get past Arkansas-Little Rock, 3-0, in a physical match that belonged to the Lady Govs almost from the outset.

Lady Govs remain unbeaten after big road comeback at Lipscomb Going into halftime with a deficit was a new obstacle, but Austin Peay rebounded for a 2-1 come-from-behind victoryn at Lipscomb. Austin Peay (4-0-1) equaled its longest unbeaten streak to open the regular season, tying the 2010 squad that went 5-0 to open the campaign. Despite outshooting the Lady Bisons 9-4 in the opening

2013 HEADLINES half, the Lady Govs surrendered the opening goal to Lipscomb. In the 16th minute, Brittany Rupple rifled a shot that Filippone deflected off the crossbar. The deflection landed right at the feet of Ellen Lundy, who slid it past a fast-recovering Filippone for the goal and the first deficit the Lady Govs had faced in the 2013 regular season. Austin Peay turned on the offense in the second half. In the 63rd minute, Andy Quiceno netted her season’s first goal, taking burying a shot from just inside the box. Zigelsky got the assist and the Lady Govs had the equalizer. Nine minutes later, Fabbro netted her second game-winning goal for the Lady Govs. Senior Natalia Ariza slid a pass to Fabbro in front of the net, and the Coquitlam, British Columbia native flicked it into the nylon for the go-ahead tally. Filippone made one save to take the victory, while Lipscomb’s Anna Buhigas made seven saves in a losing effort. Fabbro scores twice to fuel Lady Govs comeback Two late goals from Fabbro allowed Austin Peay to overcome a second-half deficit to remain unbeaten, defeating St. Bonaventure, 3-2, at McGraw-Jennings Field. Olszewski got Austin Peay on the board first with her season’s second goal. Playing the ball in from past midfield after a corner kick that was cleared away by the Bonnies, senior Corey Osborn found the Pickerington, Ohio native, who fought for the ball and gave Austin Peay an early lead. The early goal has become a staple of the Lady Gov arsenal; Austin Peay scored its opening goal with less than 11 minutes off the clock in four of its first six 2013 matches. The Bonnies would go on the attack early in the second half, netting goals in from Alyssa Lapp (59th minute) and Molly Curry (73rd minute) to take a 2-1 lead. However that deficit would be short-lived. The Lady Govs got a Canadian connection from countrywomen Sheppard and Fabbro, who teamed up for Fabbro’s fourth 2013 goal to draw the Lady Govs back even. It would be Fabbro who eventually found the back of the net on the game-winner, taking a feed from Tatiana Ariza – who was held without a goal for the second game in a row – at the back post and burying it on a half-volley from right in front of the net. For the Coquitlam, British Columbia native, the goal was her third game-winner in six matches as a Lady Gov. Fabbro and Olszewski would later take OVC Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week honors, respectively, for their efforts against the Bonnies. Sophomore Katie Emig got the win, making four saves while allowing two goals in the second half. Lady Govs fall late at Buffalo In the final game of its New York road trip, Austin Peay ran up against a tough, defensive-minded Buffalo squad that got a late Golden Goal to take a 1-0, double-overtime victory against the Lady Govs at UB Stadium. The Lady Govs were unchallenged in the first half; Buffalo did not put a shot on net in the opening period, while Austin Peay challenged Buffalo’s Ainsley Wheldon with attempts on net in the fifth minute, by Natalia Ariza, and in the 14th

minute, by her sister Tatiana. The Bulls turned the tables in the second half, crashing the Austin Peay net time and again. Austin Peay had a harder time getting meaningful looks in the second half, attempting just two shots and putting only a 47th minute attempt by Sheppard on goal. Filippone kept the Lady Govs in the match in the second half, making four saves. Her biggest stop came in the 66th minute, turning away a breakaway attempt by Megan Giesen to keep the match scoreless. The Bulls netted the game winner in the 109th minute. Kristin Markiewicz found Karen McMahon at the back right post, where she slid a shot low under Filippone for the golden-goal winner. Filippone was otherwise brilliant on the day, concluding the afternoon with four second-half saves. Opening Statement: Lady Govs down Skyhawks Austin Peay sent a statement to the rest of the OVC in its conference-opening matchup with defending OVC champion UT Martin. The Lady Govs controlled pace much of the evening and held on down the stretch for a 2-1 win. The win over UT Martin was the Lady Govs first victory in a conference opener since 2010 and gave the Lady Govs a bit of redemption from last season’s heartbreaking OVC Championship loss. Tatiana Ariza got Austin Peay on the board first. A nice lead pass from Sheppard found Ariza’s foot, and she slid it past UT Martin’s Mariah Klenke for the game’s first tally. The goal gave her 16 points through eight 2013 matches, making her the first Lady Gov to post four single-season point totals that reside in the top 10 in program history. Ariza would be named TSWA Player of the Week for her performance against UT Martin and Southeast Missouri. The Lady Govs made it 2-0 in the 63rd minute off a corner kick. A booming volley from Pultz found junior Frankie Carbajal on the left side of the box, and she put away the goal to give Austin Peay a two-score advantage. The score was the first of Carbajal’s Austin Peay career - she later earned CollegeSoccer360.com National Team of the Week honors for her efforts. Down by two goals, the Skyhawk offense went on the attack. Senior Haylee Shoaff, who subbed in for sophomore Nikki Filippone in the second half, made two saves before allowing an 82nd-minute goal to the Skyhawk’s Ellie Myrick. Hannah McGowen’s cross into the box was collected by Myrick and fired past a diving Shoaff to cut the deficit in half. Amy Maksimowicz put another challenge on net in the 84th minute but the Skyhawks comeback bid fell short. Austin Peay secured its first win against UT Martin since 2006, snapping a five-game losing streak to the Skyhawks. Lady Govs battle SEMO to hard-fought draw Austin Peay battled the rain and the Southeast Missouri Redhawks for a 1-1 tie at Morgan Brothers Field to remain unbeaten through its first two games OVC games for the first time since 2008, earning the program’s best nine-game start. 2013 HEADLINES ute penalty kick from Tatiana Ariza. After Andy Quiceno was taken down in the box by a Redhawk defender, Ariza netted her program-best eighth career penalty kick to give the Lady Govs a 1-0 lead. Southeast Missouri produced four first-half shots, forcing saves from Filippone in the 24th and 25th minutes. However, it would be their one second-half shot that produced the equalizer. Less than a minute into the second half, Natasha Minor fired a cross in to Erin Shulman, whose shot to the lower-right corner snuck past senior Haylee Shoaff to tie the game at one. The Lady Govs would outshoot the Redhawks 13-1 for the game’s remainder, but could not find the equalizer. Austin Peay would get several second-half chances, forcing six saves from the Redhawks Ashton Aubuchon after intermission. Shoaff made one save, on a Christina Rohde shot in the 102nd minute, to earn the tie. Ariza hat trick leads Lady Govs to victory at TTU An offensive explosion made Austin Peay’s road opener in the OVC an easy affair. The Lady Govs dominated from opening whistle, defeating Tennessee Tech 5-0 at Tech Soccer Field. Austin Peay wasted no time getting on the board, scoring a sixth-minute tally from Tatiana Ariza. She and Carbajal played a little give-and-go inside the box, with Ariza slotting the shot into the lower left corner. Ten minutes later, Ariza found the nylon again. A clear attempt by Tennessee Tech was corralled by Ariza, who maneuvered her way into the middle of the box and fired a leftfooted shot into the lower right corner for a 2-0 advantage. Ariza would not score the Lady Govs third goal but she would set it in motion. Her cross into the box found the foot of freshman Megan Sanchez, who uncorked a shot that deflected to Fabbro all alone in front of the net. Fabbro’s sixth goal was Austin Peay’s final tally before halftime, and Austin Peay entered the break with a 3-0 lead. The Lady Govs picked up where they left off to start the second half, scoring another goal off the foot of Andy Quiceno with less than a minute gone in the half. Fabbro picked up the assist, her first as a Lady Gov, to make it 4-0. Ariza finally got that hat trick in the 60th minute, putting two shots on net that Tennessee Tech’s Jordan Brown saved but could not maintain before wheeling into the middle of the box for a clearer shot. It was her third career hat trick and 12th career multi-goal effort, earning her OVC Offensive Player of the Week honors the following week. Filippone went the distance, making two saves for her first career full shutout victory as a Lady Gov; she had shared two shutouts earlier this season. Rain-soaked Lady Govs pull out win at Belmont A wet, windy day at E.S. Rose Park could not hold down the Austin Peay soccer offense any more than the Belmont defense could. Despite a slower-than-average start, the Lady Govs scored three unanswered goals to take a 3-1 victory against the Bruins at E.S. Rose Park. Belmont struck first with less than seven minutes gone in

38

the first half. An Austin Peay foul set up a Belmont free kick from roughly 25 yards away. Belmont junior Alison Alcott took the free kick and lobbed it into the box, where it carried over the head of everyone, including Filippone, and into the net for an early goal. For Austin Peay, the goal was just the second the Lady Gov defense has given up in the first half this season. While the first half was not the offensive onslaught Austin Peay enjoyed at Tennessee Tech on Friday, the Lady Govs kept consistent pressure and on Belmont’s net and finally broke through in the 29th minute thanks to Andy Quiceno, who beat Belmont keeper Nicole Berner’s challenge and slid the ball into the lower right corner for her season’s third goal. Austin Peay took the lead early in the second period, thanks once again to Carbajal. The junior from Jackson, Tenn. found the back of the net for the game-winner in similar fashion to her goal against UT Martin on Sept. 27, heading in a corner kick from Natalia Ariza to give Austin Peay a 2-1 lead. Locastro netted Austin Peay’s third goal of the day. The Memphis native’s first career goal was a laser from 35 yards away that Berner could not handle; it hit just under the crossbar and bounced down and into the net, making Locastro the only freshman other than Fabbro with a goal in 2013. Filippone made four saves on the day, giving her two wins, a shutout and six saves on the weekend. APSU emerges from battle of the unbeatens with OVC lead Only one squad emerged from the battle of OVC unbeatens between Austin Peay and Eastern Illinois with an unblemished record. Tatiana Ariza made sure it was the Lady Govs. The senior from Bogota scored less than two minutes into the contest and later added a second goal to lead the Lady Govs to a 3-0 victory against Eastern Illinois, snapping the Panthers four-match win streak in conference play and extending Austin Peay’s winning streak against Eastern Illinois to four games. As they have so often this season, the Lady Govs struck first and struck quickly. In just the second minute, Ariza took a feed from Sheppard and created space for herself in the box, blasting a shot by the Panthers Cortney Jerzy for the game’s first goal. Among the five goals Austin Peay has scored in the first 10 minutes of contests in 2013, Ariza’s tally at the 1:36 mark was the fastest. Later in the first half another senior, Joceline Quiceno, got in on the act. Again Sheppard was the facilitator for finishing, firing a cross through the box that found Quiceno all alone near the back post. She put it away easily for her season’s first goal. Ariza found the nylon again in the 83rd minute. Andy Quiceno’s cross to the middle of the box left Ariza with a clean shot on net, and the 2012 London Olympian rarely missed from there. The multi-goal game was the 13th of Ariza’s career and her fourth in 2013.

2013 HEADLINES Lady Govs offense cools against SIU Edwardsville Austin Peay’s Senior Day festivities were marred by visiting SIU Edwardsville at Morgan Brothers Field. The Lady Gov offense never seemed to get in gear against the Cougars, dropping a 1-0 decision to drop them out of first place in the Ohio Valley Conference. Austin Peay suffered its first home loss since Sept. 23, 2012, a streak that saw the Lady Govs go 7-0-1 over that span. Austin Peay’s normally dynamite offense was severely limited by SIU Edwardsville’s possession-based brand of soccer. The Lady Govs attempted just six shots, putting four on goal, and managed just two shots after halftime. Senior Tatiana Ariza, the leading scorer in the OVC, was held to just one 22nd-minute shot on goal. The Cougar offense came to life in the second half. After attempting just two first-half shots, SIU Edwardsville tested the Austin Peay defense multiple times over the final 45 minutes, breaking through in the 74th minute. A booming Tory Pitts free kick was touched to Christine Martinez by Kourtney Price and Martinez finished the play, breaking the scoreless tie and giving Austin Peay its first home deficit in 2013. Sophomore Courtney Sheppard forced a save from Cougar netminder Jennifer Pelley in the 88th minute, one of only two Lady Gov shot attempts in the second half and the only one coming after SIU Edwardsville had taken the lead. Pelley took the win with a four-save effort, while her Austin Peay counterpart Filippone was saddled with her first loss since Sept. 15, making two saves. Late goals doom Lady Govs against Morehead St. Despite taking an early two-goal lead into halftime, Austin Peay dropped a 3-2 decision to Morehead State in what was truly a tale of two halves. As they so often have, Austin Peay took the early lead and looked poised to take the game over in the first half. In the 32nd minute, Andy Quiceno scored her season’s fourth goal on a through ball from Pultz that she took low for the score. Less than a minute later, Olszewski headed home a nice cross from Fabbro for her season’s third goal and with it, a 2-0 lead that Austin Peay would take into halftime. But the second half would be all about Morehead State. Angela Black got it started in the 51st minute, taking a long run and firing it low past Filippone for the goal. Seven minutes later, the Eagles Jade Flory went on a run of her own, assisted by Holley Tilley. Filippone challenged the play but Flory was able to get past her and put the ball in the net to tie the match at two apiece. The contest appeared destined for overtime, but Morehead State had other ideas. Black and Flory got out ahead of the Lady Gov defense, with Flory scoring the game-winner with just 17 seconds remaining in the game. For just the second time in Austin Peay history, the Lady Govs lost a match after taking a two-goal lead. On Oct. 27, 2005, Austin Peay dedicated Morgan Brothers Soccer Field before their final regular season contest against Evansville. The Lady Govs stormed out to a 2-0 lead before conceding four straight goals in an eventual 4-2 loss to the Purple Aces,

and had not done that in 57 consecutive matches at Morgan Brothers entering the Morehead State match. Woes continue in loss at Eastern Kentucky Austin Peay came out on the wrong end of a back-andforth affair against Eastern Kentucky, dropping a 3-2 contest at EKU Soccer Field for its first three-match losing streak since losing to Xavier, Southeast Missouri and UT Martin, Sept. 18-25, 2011. Eastern Kentucky got on the board first, a rarity against the Lady Govs in 2013 – Amani Thomas’ 32nd-minute goal made EKU just the fourth squad to score first against Austin Peay this season. She slipped a shot past Filippone to the lower right corner for her season’s first goal. The Lady Govs answered back less than two minutes later. Olszewski headed home a brilliant cross from Tatiana Ariza for her season’s fourth goal and second on the weekend. Ariza and Osborn would challenge EKU keeper Erika Wolfer late in the first half, but the Colonels were able to hold off the Lady Govs’ charges and entered halftime with the score tied. With less than five minutes off the second half clock, the Colonels took the lead again on a Cassie Smith goal. She took the cross from Nikki Donnelly and put it past Shoaff, who entered the game to open the second half. Again the Lady Govs would answer. Zigelsky would do it herself, taking it unassisted and firing a 15-yard shot into the lower left corner to knot the game at 2-2. But the Colonels weren’t done yet. Donnelly, a senior who had been without a goal this season after earning 2012 All-OVC honors, found nylon on a 25-yard shot that hit the crossbar and went in to give Eastern Kentucky a 3-2 lead in the 67th minute that would stand for the remainder of the game. Lady Govs rebound with big win at JSU A 3-0 victory at Jacksonville State was just what the doctor ordered for Austin Peay. The Lady Govs backed their offensive onslaught with some sterling defensive play to knock off the Gamecocks and get back in the win column. Austin Peay owned the first half of play with an offensive array that looked every bit the dynamic offense fans have come to expect from the Lady Govs. Austin Peay outshot Jacksonville State 10-2 in the first half, with a 5-1 shots on goal differential. Fabbro netted the Lady Govs first goal on the afternoon, taking a feed from Andy Quiceno from around 10 yards out, going low and to the right to give Austin Peay a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute – it would be the only goal the Lady Govs would score in the first half. Fabbro would assist on Tatiana Ariza’s tally in the 64th minute. Ariza beat the keeper one-on-one to the right corner for her season’s 14th goal. Quiceno capped the scoring with an unassisted tally in the 72nd minute. She lofted a 25-yard shot from the left side, over the head of keeper Cate Eden for the goal, her season’s fifth. It was Quiceno’s first game with three or more points since her hat trick against Eastern Illinois, Oct. 12, 2012. 2013 HEADLINES the shutout, her third clean sheet of the campaign. Early deficit too much for Lady Govs to overcome at Murray State Austin Peay dropped a 2-1 decision to Murray State, Sunday, in the regular season finale at Cutchin Field. The loss gave Austin Peay (10-5-2, 5-4-1 OVC) the No. 6 seed at the OVC Tournament, hosted by regular season champion UT Martin. An aggressive Murray State squad got on the board early in the first half. Bronagh Kerins took a cross from Julie Mooney in the fourth minute, firing it past Filippone from just outside the 18-yard box. The Racers would strike again in the 62nd minute. Tasha Merritt and Taylor Stevens helped free Lauren Frazier, who found the net to give Murray State a 2-0 lead with under half an hour remaining in the match. Down by two goals, the Lady Govs doubled their efforts toward finding the back of the net. Olszewski, Ariza and senior Zigelsky each forced multiple saves from Haberman over the half’s final minutes before Kink finally broke through for the Lady Govs with an 84th-minute laser to cut the deficit in half. Filippone made an astounding 10 saves in defeat, a season-high for her and the most by a Lady Gov since Shoaff’s 10-save effort on Aug. 17, 2012 against Arkansas. Four Lady Govs earn OVC honors Four Austin Peay players were honored at the 2013 OVC postseason awards banquet prior to the start of the OVC Tournament. Seniors Tatiana and Natalia Ariza both found homes on the first-team, while Andy Quiceno was a second-team honoree. Fabbro earned a spot on the All-Newcomer team. Tatiana Ariza becomes the first four-time first-team all-conference honoree since Samford’s Heather Birdsell (2004-07). The 2012 OVC Offensive Player of the Year led the conference with 14 goals and 32 points entering play this weekend. Eight of Ariza’s goals came during conference play, including a hat trick at Tennessee Tech. Her sister Natalia joins her as the only two Lady Govs to end their careers with four all-conference honors to their credit. Though she garnered two assists on the season, Ariza was an instrumental part of a Lady Govs defensive unit that allowed just 18 goals in 17 regular-season matches, playing 1,488 minutes – second-highest among Lady Govs. Quiceno’s second-team nod is her career’s first OVC honor. The Houston native scored five goals and tied for the team lead with four assists, with much of her success coming in conference play; she’s tied for fourth in the OVC in goals (four) and fifth in points (10) in conference games. Fabbro, who joined the Lady Govs in the spring as a mid-year enrollee, is the first Austin Peay player to earn AllNewcomer honors since Emily Perkins in 2011. She scored seven goals and assisted on three others in her first season in Clarksville, where she was Austin Peay’s second-leading scorer. She tied Jessica Hosse (2004) and Ashley Beck (2005) for second-most goals by a freshman in APSU history.

Late Olszewski goal lifts Lady Govs to semifinals A late Olszewski goal lifted Austin Peay to a thrilling 1-0 victory against third-seeded Southeast Missouri in the first round of the 2013 OVC Tournament. The squads battled to a scoreless first half, but it was not without opportunities for both sides. The Lady Govs best chances came on longer shots outside the 18-yard box; Natalia Ariza’s 13th-minute attempt was saved only by a diving stop from Southeast Missouri’s Ashton Aubuchon, while Sheppard’s attempt to the upper 90 in the 27th minute was punched over the bar. Filippone came up big for Austin Peay on a few occasions in the first half. In the 28th minute, Filippone made a great point-blank save on a wide-open shot from Natasha Minor, and stopped a looping line-drive shot from Kasey Crowden in the 35th minute. The Lady Govs broke through late, just as they did in last season’s semifinal appearance against SIU Edwardsville. This time it was Olszewski getting the game-winner, heading home a corner kick from Natalia Ariza with less than five minutes remaining. Filippone stood toe-to-toe with Aubuchon, the OVC Defensive Player of the Year, for 90 minutes. The Woodbridge, Ontario native made six saves for her season’s fourth shutout, while Aubuchon made seven saves in defeat. Lady Govs can’t make lead last in OVC Tourney loss to Morehead State The 2013 season came to a close for Austin Peay in the semifinals of the OVC Tournament. A valiant second-half comeback by the Lady Govs went for naught, as secondseeded Morehead State staged a comeback of its own for a 4-2 victory. The Eagles, who rallied back from a 2-0 deficit in the Oct. 19 match against the Lady Govs, got on the board first in this edition of the rivalry. Jade Flory, the OVC’s Offensive Player of the Year, was fouled in the box and converted the ensuing penalty kick to give Morehead State a lead in the 23rd minute. The Lady Govs would rally however, scoring twice to take the lead. Austin Peay’s first goal came in the 67th minute on an Ariza-to-Ariza connection; Natalia’s cross was headed in by Tatiana through heavy traffic for the equalizer. Olszewski would put the Lady Govs ahead three minutes later, corralling a loose ball in the box and firing it in for the unassisted tally, her season’s sixth and her second in as many days. But the Eagles would answer back in the 75th minute, with Macy Cobb putting in a goal after a Kelsey Gomez free kick led to a mad scramble in the box. OVC Freshman of the Year Angela Black scored the final two goals for the Eagles. She scored the go-ahead goal in the 83rd minute and tacked on an insurance goal on a breakaway in the 85th minute to put the game out of reach.
