THIS IS AUSTIN PEAY STATE UNIVERSITY

A

ustin Peay State University is a comprehensive, stateassisted university with a distinguished tradition in liberal and professional education. The institution is named in honor of Austin Peay, Tennessee’s governor from 1924 until 1927, the year APSU was founded. The university is located in Clarksville, Tenn., just 45 minutes northwest of Tennessee’s capital, Nashville, on Interstate 24. One of the South’s most historic cities, Clarksville also is Tennessee’s third-fastest growing city behind only Memphis and Nashville. Situated on gently rolling terrain near picturesque downtown Clarksville, Austin Peay’s main campus consists of 68 buildings on 169 acres. The classical Georgian architecture of the Austin Peay campus is combined with newer buildings. This blend provides a link with the past while reflecting the academic excellence and dignity of an institution of higher learning. The newest building additions to the main campus are the Foy Fitnees and Recreation Center, Sundquist Science Complex and the new Morgan University Center, each opening for use since 2001. The $11-million Foy Center, features a rock-climbing wall and 10,000 square feet of fitness space and other amenities for the student body. The Sundquist Complex is one of the South’s premier science education facilities and represents the largest capital appropriation ever in Tennessee for a single classroom building. The new Morgan University Center is located in the heart of the campus and features a cybercafe, meeting rooms, a food court, coffee shop, ballroom and lounges for Austin Peay students. Austin Peay’s campus has been the site of seven educational institutions since 1806. The campus was occupied by Southwestern for 50 years until 1925 when the school moved to Memphis. Austin Peay was founded two years later as a two-year normal school to train teachers for the region. Austin Peay has grown over the years to take its place among the finest mid-sized four-year universities in the nation. Austin Peay Normal School became a four-year college in 1941-42, and university status was conferred Sept. 1, 1967. Austin Peay State University currently enrolls more than 10,000 students from every region of Tennessee, most of the 50 states and several foreign countries. Austin Peay offers more than 50 majors in associate, bachelor’s, master’s and education specialist’s degrees with additional areas of concentration. Courses are offered in arts and sciences, business, education, engineering technology, nursing and human services. Graduate studies also are offered in several areas. In addition, numerous online courses are offered each semester. A state leader in public service, Austin Peay State University has more than 750 employees. Engaged in the most modern teaching techniques and research are nearly 280 full-time faculty members, 90 percent of whom hold the earned doctorate or appropriate terminal degrees in their disciplines.

LADY GOVS SOFTBALL FACILITIES CHERYL HOLT FIELD

The Lady Govs softball diamond officially became Cheryl Holt Field, April 9, 2011, in dedication ceremonies prior to Austin Peay’s softball doubleheader with Murray State. Holt, who was Austin Peay’s head volleyball coach for 23 years and has CHERYL HOLT FILE served in the University’s athletics adminEDUCATION istration since 1997, was Austin Peay’s Ohio State, B.A., 1969 first softball coach when the program was Austin Peay, M.A., 1972 initiated in 1986. The dedication was part of APSU’s Celebration of Women’s AthHEAD COACH letics weekend. VOLLEYBALL (499 victories) University of Mississippi, 1977 Holt was joined on the field for the Miami (Fla.), 1978-81 dedication by APSU President Tim Hall Austin Peay, 1982-2003 along with Women’s in Athletics co-chairs Nancy Howell and Susan Cole, who was SOFTBALL (program’s first coach) a member of the first Lady Govs softball Austin Peay, 1986-87 team. Three other 1986 team members, Jane Goodson, Regina Suggs Clark and Women’s Tennis Ginny Gray Davis, pulled the cords on Austin Peay, 1983-85 the centerfield tarp to unveil the newlyAthletic Administration named field. Senior Woman Administrator “This is one of the proudest moments Austin Peay, 1997of my life and at the same time one of the most humbling as well,” said Holt, who Assistant Athletics Director introduced members of her family. Austin Peay, 2003APSU’s assistant athletics director since 2003, Holt acknowledged former APSU Athletics Director Johnny Miller for hiring her at Austin Peay as well as subsequent athletics directors and university administrators who supported her and the athletics program. Specifically, she gave credit to all the former studentathletes who helped make the day possible.

Holt amassed 363 victories as APSU head volleyball coach-most of her victories came in her final 13 years as coach when more emphasis was placed on women’s sports, but in particular, volleyball-and 499 overall Division I victories in 28 years. In 1982, Holt came back to Clarksville and Austin Peay, the school where she attained her master’s after earning her bachelor’s from Ohio in 1969. Holt’s coaching career began at Austin Peay during an era when women’s sports coaches were asked to coach multiple sports-she was hired to coach volleyball and women’s tennis in 1982. A four-time OVC Volleyball Coach of the Year, she also served as assistant women’s basketball coach. When Austin Peay initiated the softball program in 1986, the-late Bob Brooks, athletics director at the time, asked Holt to initiate the program. Using mostly student-athletes from other teams like women’s basketball and volleyball, Holt was able to field a team for the 1986 season, playing their games at city-owned Edith Pettus Park. She coached the team again in 1987.

Cheryl Holt Field became the permanent on-campus home facility for the Austin Peay softball team in the 2000 season, giving the Lady Govs their first true home facility in the program’s 15-year history to that point. Its location at the southwest corner of what was the former football practice field puts it at the center of the APSU intercollegiate on-campus sports facilities, being surrounded by the Dunn Center (basketball/volleyball) and Raymond C. Hand Park (baseball) to the west, Morgan Brothers Soccer Field to the north, the Governors Indoor Tennis Center and Governors Stadium (football) to the east. Since becoming the home facility, Cheryl Holt Field has seen several upgrades take place. First a free-standing, enclosed, field-level press box was brought in 2001 and lights were added two years later. In 2005, there was an upgrade to the dugouts, as the gray cinderblock was covered with red bricks, more matching the university’s main color, while a covered hitting area/ storage area building was built behind the right field fence. The structure has two hitting tunnels and can hold up to four simulteanous hitting stations. In 2006, a black hitter’s background was erected in centerfield. More upgrades came in 2007, as the original fence backstop was taken down and replaced with a two-part backstop, a bottom that is a solid redbrick base, with the upper part being a nylon-webbing net on a four-pole system. The black hitters’ background, which was behind the original fence in centerfield, became the new centerfield wall, bringing the centerfield to a distance of 210 feet, while the left and right field lines remain at 200 feet. Prior to the 2000 season, the Austin Peay softball team had played at several locations off campus for its home games, but primarily at Edith Pettus Park, just off the northwest side of the main APSU campus.

STEPHANIE PARIS

HEAD COACH Second Season • UT Martin (2004) Stephanie Paris enters her second season as head coach of the softball program in 2013-14 after taking over the reins in July 2012, becoming the seventh head coach in the program’s history. The Lady Govs finished with an 18-26 record overall and 9-16 in Ohio Valley Conference play in Paris’ first season, just falling short of making the conference tournament for the first time in six years on the last day of the regular season. Three players earned individual OVC recognition in 2013, as two juniors earned All-OVC honors, with Lauren de Castro being named to the OVC First-Team and Kayla Davidson getting OVC Second-Team honors, while sophomore Laurel Burroughs took home OVC Player of the Week honors on Feb. 18. There were also several individual and team records broken in Paris’ initial season at the helm, with freshman Courtney Brower setting a new hit-by-pitch mark (12) and de Castro posting a .995 fielding percentage. As a team, the Lady Govs set new marks for doubles (65) and home runs (34) in a single season, while also seeing its team overall batting average rise to its highest mark since the 1997 campaign and its slugging percentage the second highest total in the program’s history. Paris also became only the second coach in the program’s history to win her season-opening game to start her career.Paris comes to Austin Peay from Colorado State University-Pueblo, where she has served as assistant coach since 2007. While at CSU-P, she has helped the ThunderWolves to five 20-plus winning seasons that saw them participate in the post-season conference tourney each season. It also included a No. 4 regional ranking this past season. CSU-P was the 2009 NCAA National Tourney regional runner up in 2009. Jumping from a Division II assistant position to a Division I head coach is not something that fazes Paris. “The ball game hasn’t changed from Division I to Division II-it is still the same ball game,” Paris said. “I am just excited to get started and see what kind of talent we have here, incorporate my philosophies and strategies and started a tradition of winning here.” “Stephanie was ready for the next step,” Holt said. “She literally had experience in doing it all there-from recruiting, paperwork, on-field coaching, strategies...” Paris is used to building and rebuilding. The Brentwood native took over Ravenwood’s program at its inception in 2005 and led them to a 7-20 record. Ravenwood improved to 19-18 the following season and 33-17 in 2007. In her short time there, Paris developed 10 all-district selections and one all-region product. “Tennessee has a gigantic pool of talent,” Paris said. “The

6

instate talent should be enough to compete in the conference and the national level. I expect to have some out-of-state kids who might be game changers or top-caliber kids.” As a player, Paris played two seasons at Jackson State Community College where she was named the 2001 Tennessee Junior College Player of the Year and was later inducted into the Jackson State Athletics Hall of Fame. Paris owned a career .354 batting mark at the school. From there she went to UT Martin where she set records for stolen bases and stolen-base attempted. She earned honorable mention All-OVC in 2003.

SHANE SHOWALTER ASSISTANT COACH Second Season • Adams College (1993)

Shane Showalter enters his second season as an assistant coach for Stephanie Paris at Austin Peay. Showalter, who served as Colorado State-Pueblo’s head coach for 11 seasons, elected to join Stephanie Paris, whom he mentored for the past five seasons, at APSU prior to the 2013 season. Showalter left CSU-Pueblo as the winningest coach in program history, gaining his 200th ThunderWolves victory in 2011 on his way to more than 225 victories. Under Showalter’s direction, the CSU-Pueblo program became a consistent contender in the Division II Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, finishing second last season-he was named RMAC Coach of the Year. In the past six seasons, CSUPueblo qualified for the RMAC Tournament each season, finishing second twice (in 2006 and 2007). He coached an All-American in 2010, two RMAC Players of the Year and the league freshman of the year in 2012. Along the way he mentored eight all-region, 44 all-league and 10 all-

conference tournament selections. In 2009, the program qualified for the NCAA Division II National Tournament berth for the first time in school history. The ThunderWolves earned an at-large bid that season and eventually played its way into the Central Regional Championship game, on the way to earning the program’s first-ever wins in a national tournament game. Off the field his team’s success also carried into the classroom. While at CSU-Pueblo, the maintained a grade-point average better than 3.4. Prior to serving as the ThunderWolves’ head coach, Showalter held the same position at Division III Colorado College, a non-scholarship program in Colorado Springs. Before arriving at Colorado College, he was an assistant coach at his alma mater Adams State (Alamosa, Colo.) from 1996-98. Showalter earned both his bachelor’s (Sports and Exercise Management) and master’s (Exercise Physiology) at Adams State. He has a daughter, Maison.

DENNY BOGUSKIE

ASSISTANT COACH Second Season • Middle Tennessee (1978) Denny Boguskie enters his second season as an assistant under Stephanie Paris. Boguskie, a long-time fixture around the Clarksville softball scene, assists primarily with the outfielders and in game-day operations. Boguskie spent the previous 10 years at nearby Rossview High School, serving as an assistant coach for Phillip Burkhart. With Boguskie on staff, the Redhawks won six district championships and made nine regional tournament appearances, ad-

Lady Govs

vancing to the 2005 TSSAA State Tournament. During that time Rossview, won 224 games and had a district record of 112-26. Off the softball field, Boguskie was a long-time probation officer for the United States Federal Court system, as well as a high school football official for the TSSAA. The Nashville native graduated from MTSU in 1978.
