ustin Peay State University is a comprehensive, state-assisted university with a distinguished tradition in liberal and professional education. The institution is named in honor of Austin Peay, Tennessee’s governor from 1924 until 1927, the year APSU was founded. The university is located in Clarksville, Tenn., just 45 minutes northwest of Tennessee’s capital, Nashville, on Interstate 24. One of the South’s most historic cities, Clarksville also is Tennessee’s third-fastest growing city behind only Memphis and Nashville. Situated on gently rolling terrain near picturesque downtown Clarksville, Austin Peay’s main campus consists of 68 buildings on 169 acres. The classical Georgian architecture of the Austin Peay campus is combined with newer buildings. This blend provides a link with the past while reflecting the academic excellence and dignity of an institution of higher learning. The newest building additions to the main campus are the Foy Fitnees and Recreation Center, Sundquist Science Complex and the new Morgan University Center, each opening for use since 2001. The $11-million Foy Center, features a rock-climbing wall and 10,000 square feet of fitness space and other amenities for the student body. The Sundquist Complex is one of the South’s premier science education facilities and represents the largest capital appropriation ever in Tennessee for a single classroom building. The Morgan University Center is located in the heart of the campus and features a cybercafe, meeting rooms, a food court, coffee shop, ballroom and lounges for Austin Peay students. Austin Peay’s campus has been the site of seven educational institutions since 1806. The campus was occupied by Southwestern for 50 years until 1925 when the school moved to Memphis. Austin Peay was founded two years later as a two-year normal school to train teachers for the region. Austin Peay has grown over the years to take its place among the finest mid-sized four-year universities in the nation. Austin Peay Normal School became a four-year college in 1941-42, and university status was conferred Sept. 1, 1967. Austin Peay State University currently enrolls more than 10,000 students from every region of Tennessee, most of the 50 states and several foreign countries. Austin Peay offers more than 50 majors in associate, bachelor’s, master’s and education specialist’s degrees with additional areas of concentration. Courses are offered in arts and sciences, business, education, engineering technology, nursing and human services. Graduate studies also are offered in several areas. In addition, numerous online courses are offered each semester. A state leader in public service, Austin Peay State University has more than 750 employees. Engaged in the most modern teaching techniques and research are nearly 280 full-time faculty members, 90 percent of whom hold the earned doctorate or appropriate terminal degrees in their disciplines.

DR. DOUG MOLNAR Head Coach Eighth Year West Virgina, 1986 In rebuilding the Austin Peay track and field and cross country programs, Dr. Doug Molnar’s dedication and relentlessness has not gone unnoticed. With more than a decade of Division I coaching experience and more than 20 years of participation in college athletics, Molnar has set a standard on which to build for his eighth season as head coach. Much of Molnar’s success can be attributed to his team’s development in the field events. Pole vaulter Carrie Burggraf was named the 2010 Indoor Field Athlete of the Year and jumper Leigha Tollivar was named Indoor Freshman of the Year. Burggraf was a three-time indoor and two-time outdoor pole vault champion, while teammate Molly Bartkiewicz earned the indoor and outdoor pole vault crown in 2007. It also was under Molnar’s guidance that Cenitra Hudson set the indoor triple jump school record in 2010. Those accomplishments were a result of Molnar’s dedication to improve a program that was coming off struggling times prior to his arrival. The 2009-10 season saw a pair of fourth-place finishes at the indoor and outdoor championships, as well as a fifth-place men’s cross country finish and a sixth-place women’s cross country finish. Each of those represented the best finishes during Molnar’s tenure. A former distance runner, Molnar came to Austin Peay from Texas-Pan American where he led the cross country squads to a top-10 regional finish in 2003. His women’s program also recorded its best finish at an NCAA regional since the mid-1980s. In addition, he coached the program’s first All-American in 2002. A native of Lorain, Ohio, Molnar excelled as an all-state selection in track and field at Admiral King High School. Following his prep career, he put his speed to work as a four-year runner at West Virginia, serving as a team captain his junior and senior year. Molnar graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1986 and remained in Morgantown another year, earning his master’s in business administration. Molnar continued his education and launched his coaching career at Kent State. As a graduate assistant, he worked with men and women’s distance runners while completing his second postgraduate degree – a master’s of arts in physical education. He graduated in 1992 and spent a year as a volunteer coach at Oberlin College before returning to serve as Kent State’s men’s cross country head coach while assisting with men and women’s track and field. In his second stint with Kent State, Molnar asserted himself. He assisted with a team that finished 20th at the 1995 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships and coached six conference champions and two relay teams which were ranked among the top

10 by Track and Field News. After several successful seasons at Kent State, Molnar again decided to further his education and his coaching experience at Tennessee. He earned a doctorate in educational administration and cultural studies, while serving two seasons as a volunteer assistant to men’s track and field and interim head coach for the Lady Vols cross country team. During his tenure, the Volunteers won a 2001 national title, claimed runner-up honors in 2002, a berth in the 2002 NCAA Cross Country Championships and the 2002 Southeastern Conference title. Molnar’s stint at Texas-Pan American laid the foundation for his eight-season tenure at Austin Peay. During his tenure, the Lady Govs have claimed six indoor school records and six outdoor school records. That total includes now-senior Chiamaka Obi’s 400-meter dash mark set at the 2010 Outdoor championships. Molnar resides in Clarksville with his wife, Kim, and her children Cameron (15), Sydney (13) and Tyler (11). Molnar’s daughter, Alyssa (23), is a senior distance runner for the Lady Govs.

VALERIE BROWN

JAMES JENKINS

Assistant Coach Second Year

Assistant Coach First Year

In an effort to raise the level of Austin Peay’s track and field program, head coach Doug Molnar turned to Valerie Brown, a 2009 NCAA Indoor All-American, as an assistant coach, Sept. 2011. Brown’s track and field success came at Western Kentucky where she capped an impressive career with a third-place finish at the 2009 NCAA Indoor Championships. In doing so, she became only the second indoor All-American in Hilltopper history and set the program’s indoor 400-meter record. Her determination is evident in Brown’s climb to the top of the NCAA track and field ranks. She began her collegiate career at Bevill State Community College in Hamilton, Ala., where she was sprinter and also ran the relays. Bevill State would finish fifth at the 2006 NJCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships and Brown parlayed her performance into a scholarship at WKU. While she developed her 400-meter dash, Brown made her way early on in the 1600- and 400-meter relays, where she was twice a Sun Belt Conference Champion in 2007 and 2008. In fact, in 2008 the Lady Toppers 1600-meter relay team ranked 16th nationally after earning a fourth-place finish at the Mideast Regional. Her individual prowess became more apparent that season as well, when she won the 400-meter dash and was runner up in the 200-meter dash. The climb to the 2009 NCAA Indoor Championships was prefaced by Brown being named the Sun Belt’s 2009 Most Outstanding Female Track Athlete after winning the 200- and 400-meter dash at the Sun Belt Indoor Track and Field Championships. Then at the NCAA tournament - prior to her monumental third-place finish - Brown ran a school-record 52.74 400-meter dash in the semifinals. Brown recently completed her master’s degree at Western Kentucky in recreation and sport administration. She was a WKU graduate in 2009.

James Jenkins joined the Govs staff in Fall 2012. He will coach the Govs in his specialty, the jumps. Jenkins pedigree is impeccable following an elite collegiate career that spanned the junior college, NAIA and NCAA levels. In 2003, Jenkins was a National Junior College All-American at Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College, placing fourth during indoor season and winning silver in the triple jump during outdoor. In 2004, Jenkins moved on to NAIA power Lindenwood College. He was an individual National Champion in the triple jump in 2004 (indoor) and 2006 (indoor and outdoor) with a career-long of 15.94m. During his time at Lindenwood, he earned six All-American honors. Jenkins capped his collegiate career at Arkansas State in 2007. He took fourth-place at the 2007 NCAA Outdoor Championships in the triple jump with a 16.06m leap, earning Arkansas State’s first outdoor All-American honor in the triple jump since 1989. Twice, Jenkins competed at the USATF Nationals, finishing 11th in the triple jump in 2006 and eighth in 2007 with a 15.88m leap. Jenkins joined the HPC Elite team in the winter of 2008. In his first meet competing as a member, he jumped 15.65m in the triple jump to place second at the Vanderbilt Invitational. Later in 2008, Jenkins won the triple jump at the USATF High Performance Invite at BYU and jumped 16.28m in the qualification round to make the finals of the triple jump at the Olympic Trials. He eventually finished 12th in the 2008 Olympic trials triple jump. In 2009, Jenkins relocated to Olympic Training Center. The move was good for Jenkins, who finished third in the triple jump at the 2009 USA Track & Field Nationals with a 16.79m leap. As a youth, Jenkins was an all-around athlete who was ranked in the Rivals Top 100 Preps in basketball, ranked in DyeStat’s Top 50 in triple jump and high jump and won gold and silver in the Missouri State High School championships in triple jump and long jump respectively.

2012-13 AUSTIN PEAY TRACK AND FIELD & CROSS COUNTRY MEDIA GUIDE

THE OHIO VALLEY CONFERENCE Entering its 64th year, the Ohio Valley Conference continues to build on the success that has made it the nation’s eighth-oldest NCAA Division I conference. In May 2011 the Conference expanded for the second time in four years, adding Belmont which will begin competition in the 2012-13 academic year. The addition of Belmont will give the OVC 12 members, the most the league has had at one time in its illustrious history. The move added a second team in the city of Nashville and was the first addition to the league since SIU Edwardsville joined in 2008. SIUE will begin regular season competition this season and be eligible for postseason the same year Belmont joins the league. The OVC sponsors the following sports: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis and track for men, and basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, track and volleyball for women. In addition, the OVC also sponsors the combined men’s and women’s sport of rifle.
