Were you paying attention to the Minnesota Wild this year? Any chance you recognized the number of line com binations, and different positions that each player on the Wild played? Even during the playoffs, when the stakes are the highest, you saw different combina tions of forwards who may have played center in one period, and suddenly were playing their off-wing the next period (or even the next shift). These types of mid-game adjustments become more and more prevalent as your advance through your hockey career. Why do I point this out? There is an obvious message there for young play ers and their parents: You need to focus on being a hockey player, not playing a specific position when you are young! Several years ago, I was coaching a Peewee B1 team and one of the players on my team had been a good squirt A player the year before, scoring plenty of goals, and frankly being able to do what he wanted to. One year later, the game is a little faster, the kids are bigger, there is less time and space and suddenly, the ‘success’ that he had just 7 months ear lier was not showing up as quick has he (or his parents wanted). What was ob vious, however, was that he understood the game better than other players, had good vision, and almost always made the right decision with the puck when he had an extra second. His quickness in the corners, and his puck control was not up to the same speed as others at the next level, and there was frustration on his part.So, understanding that he had some other skills, needed some confidence, and could help the team with his vi sion, ability to make the first pass, and a strong shot, I moved him to D about 4 weeks into the season. The response from him and his parents was dismay. Afterall, he was a ‘scoring machine’ in Squirts and he was a forward, not a defensemen. I ex plained my rationale to the player and the parents, and while there was skep ticism from them, they also understood that ultimately it was my decision and let it play itself out. More importantly, they were open to the possibility.
to try different positions, get different looks, and have some fun while doing that. I would encourage more parents (and coaches) to ensure their young players are playing different positions throughout their youth experience. The fact is the best hockey players at every level are willing and able to play any position when called upon. You will not know where they will be needed to help the team at any point, so support their development and prepare them to play the game, not just a position.

Now, the player is playing HS hock ey as a defensemen, but I ultimately be lieve he is a better overall hockey player because he saw the game from a differ ent lens. I have no doubt that if/when he ends up being moved to a forward position again, if that is what the team/ coach needs, he will be able to execute, pick up the role and play it well, because he was not pigeon-holed both physically and mentally when he was younger. My son was another example, but this time I was on the receiving end of the decision as a parent. During his Bantam A season, he was moved to a forward position after playing on the point for the last several years. I was looking out at the high school roster and felt he could add some depth to the D position during his sophomore year and

I was not thrilled with the decision. At the same time, I also recognized what the team was needing at that time, and it really was not my decision anyway (much to my dismay!). He ultimately played forward in high school, but also knew he could step on the ice and play a defensive role as a forward or even move to the point if the need was there. MOST IMPORTANT LY, he found that he really loved play ing forward, specifically as a wing who enjoyed the heavy forecheck and grind in the corners. This is the role which helped him achieve his goal of playing at the junior level. Fast forward to his first year of junior hockey, and about six games into the season, the defensive core was riddled with injuries, and he told his coach that he played D a few years ago and could help. Sure enough, he ended up playing 10-15 games as a defenseman, and when the core was healthy again, he moved back up to the forward position. He literally played EVERY position during the season with his Junior A hockey club (LW, C, RW, RD, LD… and even strapped the pads on for a practice! Why not, he started out as a goaltender in squirts!) The moral of the story: As a par ent, do not feed into the belief that be cause your son/daughter is good at one position when they are 9, 10, 11 years old that they should stay there. Ulti mately, they will end up gravitating to a specific position and will develop some position-specific skills. BUT, the best advice is to allow them the opportunity

As a former goaltender growing up in the Detroit, MI area, finishing his High School Hockey in Thief River Falls, MN, and getting his coaching start with East Grand Forks Green Wave High School in 1991 while attend ing the University of North Dakota, Paul An tonenko is a lifelong advocate for the game of hockey. He is a USA Hockey Level 4 Coach, USA Hockey Level 1 Official, Former Hockey Development Director for Armstrong/Cooper Youth Hockey, Former Coaches Board Chair for Orono Youth Hockey, and has coached teams of all ages and skill levels since 1991, girls and boys, from Mites through high school throughout the upper Midwest. He is the fa ther of 3 girls and 2 boys who have all played through various levels of competitive hockey including the Girls Tier I Elite League outside of Minnesota, Minnesota High School Hockey, and juniors in the USPHL Premier League. Minnesota Hockey, an affiliate of USA Hockey, is the governing body of youth and amateur hockey in Minnesota and the premier developer of hockey players in the state. With over 67,000 registered players and coaches, it is the largest state governing body for amateur hockey in the United States.
ST. PAUL, Minn. – Minnesota Hockey, in partnership with the Minne sota Wild, announced it will be launch ing a new diversified hockey program for players in Minnesota with hearing loss. The Minnesota Wild Deaf/Hard of Hearing (“HOH”) Hockey program will kick off its inaugural season with a special event on Saturday, Sept.the St. Louis Park Rec Center in St. Louis

PAUL, Minn. – The final registra tion report from USA Hockey has been released following USA Hockey Annual Congress and Minnesota Hockey has es tablished a new record of 8 & Under (8U) players with 19,079. That number marks the first time Minnesota has surpassed the 19,000 8U player mark. The total helped Minnesota Hockey establish a record for total players as well, with 58,666 players of all ages gearing up across the state. The 19,079 8U players includes 13,631 boys and a record 5,448 girls and is an increase of 12.2% over 2020-21. As en couraging as the 8U number is, perhaps the most encouraging statistic is that Min nesota had its largest number of new 8U players with 7,912 boys and girls suiting up for the first time. “To set a new record for 8 & Under players, especially coming off the chal lenging pandemic year of 2020-21, is remarkable,” said Minnesota Hockey president, Steve Oleheiser. “As an orga nization, it is imperative that we keep the base of our pyramid as wide as possible and provide the opportunity for every child to try the sport. While we couldn’t be more excited to see the growth across the state, we know we have more work to do in welcoming many more families, in particular from the BIPOC community, to Minnesota Hockey.”
Minnesota Hockey, in partnership with Rink Systems, Inc., is offering its Hard Ice Divider Program for the ninth consecutive season with applications going through August, 2022. The program has helped supply over 100 sets of dividers to 75 youth hockey associations in Minnesota. The Minnesota Hockey Hard Ice Di vider Program was designed to aid com munity-based associations and their home rinks in promoting the growth of ice hock ey through the implementation of cross and half-ice hockey, and it’s made a huge impact on the game throughout the state. Associations have utilized the boards to enhance a wide variety of age-appropriate programs include in-house mite and squirt programs, jamborees, tournaments and three-on-three or four-on-four leagues for older age Throughgroups.thepartnership, Rink Systems will also allow for associations that pur chase hard ice dividers through the pro gram to purchase junior size goal frames at a discounted rate. Junior size goal frames provide a more realistic playing experi ence for young goaltenders, enabling them to gain confidence and passion for posi tion. Minnesota Hockey affiliated associ ations interested in purchasing a “hard divider” system must complete an online application for the program and submit a deposit. Once approved, Minnesota Hock ey associations will be able to purchase a set of boards, valued at $7,900, for just $5,400. Associations that take advantage of the hard ice divider subsidy will also be able to purchase the junior goal frames sets of two goal frames for $500, which are valued at $600. In fact, many participants in Deaf/Hard of Hearing hockey compete on local as sociation, high school or even college teams. The 6-foot, 172-pound native of Chicago, Ill., reg istered 21 points (3-18=21) in 59 games with Sioux Falls of the United States Hockey League (USHL) during the 2021-22 season. The right-shot blue liner ranked second amongst Stampede defensemen in scoring and ranked T-4th on the team in power-play assists (5) and T-5th in assists. The 18-year-old (5/19/04) owns 23 points (3-20=23), 36 penalty minutes and 72 shots in 74 career games in two seasons with Sioux Falls and Team USA (2020-22). He will attend Harvard University this fall. “Ryan is an elite skater and puck mover, who can quarterback the power play,” said MinnesotaBrackett.selected defenseman David Spacek in the fifth round with the 153rd overall selection. The 6-foot, 174-pound native of Columbus, Ohio, spent the 2021-22 season with Sher brooke of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) and tallied 50 points (12-38=50) in 57 contests. The right-shot blueliner has represented the Czech Republic at the 2019 Five Na tions Tournament in Fussen, at the 2019 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, at the 2020 Five Nations Tournament in Ufa, at the 2021 IIHF U18 World Cham pionship and at the 2021 Four Nations Tournament in Fussen. The 19-year-old (2/18/03) appeared in 57 contests with Plzen Jr. of the Czech Republic Junior League over two seasons (2019-21). Defenseman Brock Faber (Maple Grove, Minn./University of Minneso ta) has been named captain of the 2022 U.S. National Junior Team it was an nounced today by USA Hockey. In addition, forwards Thomas Bordeleau (Houston, Texas/San Jose Sharks), and Landon Slaggert (South Bend, Ind./University of Notre Dame) were named alternate captains. Faber and Slaggert were members of the gold medal-winning 2021 U.S. Na tional Junior Team. “You don’t make it through this tournament if everyone doesn’t lead,” said head coach Nate Leaman (East Greenwich, R.I./Providence College) “At some point, every guy will be called upon to lead in their way, espe cially if we want to win gold.” Team USA will begin play in the 2022 International Ice Hockey Feder ation World Junior Championship on Tuesday (Aug. 9) in Edmonton, Alber ta, against Germany. – The Minne sota Wild selected eight players during the 2022 NHL Draft Thursday and Fri day from Bell Centre in Montreal, in cluding six players during rounds two through seven today. Minnesota select ed six forwards and two defensemen, including three Canadians, two Amer icans, one Russian, one from Slovakia and one from MinnesotaSweden.began Thursday night selecting left wing Liam Ohgren with the 19th overall selection of the 2022 NHL Draft. Ohgren, 18 (1/28/04), col lected 58 points (33-25=58) in 30 games with Djurgaden Jr. of the Swedish Ju nior League during the 2021-22 sea son. The 6-foot-1, 201-pound native of Stockholm, Sweden, also appeared in 25 games with Djurgarden of the Swedish Hockey League (SHL). The left-shot forward served as team captain and won a gold medal with Sweden at the 2022 IIHF U18 World Championship. He ranked fourth on the team with nine points (3-6=9) in six games during the tournament and netted the game-win ning goal in the gold medal game against the United States. He also represented Sweden at the 2021 Hlinka-Gretzy Cup and at the 2021 Four Nations Tourna ment in “LiamAngelholm.isatwo-way hard skilled winger,” said Judd Brackett, Minnesota Wild Director of Amateur Scouting. “He has speed, power and a heavy shot.” The Wild selected right wing Danila Yurov in the first round with the 24th overall selection Thursday night. The Wild will play its first road game on Sat urday, Oct. 22 at Boston. Broadcast information will be announced at a later date. The 2022-23 schedule consists of 82 games – 41 home contests and 41 road contests. Minnesota’s home schedule features 19 weekend games (three on Friday, nine on Saturday and seven on Sunday). Minnesota will open the season with a four-game homestand – the second-longest homestand to open a single season in team history (franchise best is five games from Oct. 5-14, 2006). February holds the most home games in a month this season with nine, including a season-long seven-game homestand Feb. 9-21. March holds the most road games in a month this season with nine. The Wild will travel for a season-high five-game road trip Oct. The22-30.Wild will play 26 games against Central Di vision opponents, including three games each against Stanley Cup Champion Colorado (two home, one road) and Nashville (one home, two road). Minnesota will play four games (two home and two road each) against Arizona, Chicago, Dallas, St. Louis and Winnipeg. Koepp “has not only helped all of those players, but coaches like myself, learn how to play, work and have fun in the game,” SCYHA coach and The Rink Live’s Mick Hatten said in intro ducing Koepp. “When he’s talking to junior mites in a large group or oneon-one, he gets down on one knee so that he’s talking to them at their level. “I’m not sure I’ve ever heard Duane raise his voice, much less yell, at a player. And I’ve never seen him in a bad mood around the kids and he brings an upbeat attitude, inspires enthusiasm from the kids as each practice starts and gives clear direction and instruc tion to everything he does.” Koepp also helps or ganize and plays in an Oldtimers hockey league in St. Cloud that plays on Wednesdays and Sundays. Duane and his wife, Kim, live in St. Cloud. The family also supports hockey through the Brian Koepp Memorial Fund, which sponsors game day program ads and equip ment for youth hockey players. Brian was the son of Duane and Kim and he died in 2002. The couple also has a daughter, Wendy VanCamp. She is married to Nathan VanCamp and they have three children — Al lie, Bennett and Landon. Bennett and Landon play youth hockey in Orono. The Herb Brooks Foundation has established an internet-based, Minneso ta Youth Hockey Hall of Fame. People highly devoted to youth hockey devel opment are nominated and inducted into the Hall at the annual awards celebration.

Bryant has worked for the Daily Press, National Wrestling Coaches Association, USA Wres tling and Amateur Wrestling News while building his resume as a pub lic address announcer. He rebrand ed and relaunched Mat Talk Online as his own business in 2013, turn ing the website into the world’s largest on-demand wrestling audio website, producing, editing and distributing more than 3,000 pod cast episodes. For the first time in PHF history, players can come to terms on two-year agreements through the 2023-24 season and may also receive signing bonuses up to 10 percent of their total contract val ue. As part of the salary disclosure policy, a consent form accompa nies all standard player agreements for players to sign, and was also distributed to all players who had previously signed contracts before the implementation of the policy. The forms consist of options to disclose length of contract, estimated average annual value of the contract, and sign ing bonus (if appli cable), each at the athlete’s person al discretion. The forms also provide players the option for no salary information to be dis closed. Salary disclosure is activat ed by a mutual agreement between the player and their team. Once the player and team signatures are secured, the contract information may be shared by the player, team, and the “ThePHF.Players’ Association goals are centered on our core val ues of educating, empowering, and advocating for PHF athletes,” said Nicole Corriero, Executive Direc tor of the PHF Players’ Associa tion. “We thoroughly discussed this issue among our player reps to canvas all potential benefits and drawbacks from the player’s per spective, and are encouraged by the collaborative process with Reagan and the League that led to this out come. The policy gives players the option to allow for their salary to be disclosed publicly by their team and the PHF when signing their standard player agreements. The introduction of this new policy is part of the PHF’s ongoing commit ment to supporting its players and providing greater transparency.
2022-23 Contracts Introduce Options to Support Players and Provide Greater Transparency Rochester Americans (Buffalo Sa bres top affiliate team) General Manager Jason Karmanos announced today that the team has signed forward Josh Passolt Prior to turning pro, the 2015 Ma ple Grove, Minn., high school Captain completed a five-year collegiate career at Western Michigan (NCHC), totaling 108 points on 44 goals and 64 assists in 166 career games. Passolt earned NCHC Academic All-Conference honors all five seasons and was twice named a NCHC Distinguished Scholar. Passolt’s best season as a member of the Broncos came during his sopho more season in 2018-19 when he set ca reer-highs in goals (16) and points (34) in 36 contests. In his final campaign at Western Michigan, Passolt tallied 28 points on eight goals and a career-high 20 assists en route to helping the Bron cos to the NCHC Frozen Faceoff Cham pionship game as well as earning a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The 6-foot, 195-pound forward also helped WMU earn the program’s first NCAA Tournament win with a 2-1 victory in overtime over Northeastern on March 25. Passolt joins the organization after appearing in six games with the Cin cinnati Cyclones last season, where he scored his first professional point with a second-period tally on April 15 against Indy.

The final NAHL player that was selected was former Minot Minotau ros forward Ben Strinden, who was taken #210 overall in the 7th round by the Nashville Predators. Strinden, 20, was originally an NAPHL tender for the Minotauros and made his NAHL debut on November 19, 2019, where he also scored a goal in a 4-3 win at the Wilderness.Strindenalso played in the NA PHL for two seasons for the North star Knights, where he had 25 points in 21 NAPHL games and also put up nine points in six Dixon Cup Playoff games. The host site for the next two-year championship cycle was made following a vetting process and recommendation by the league’s staff and a vote of approval by the WCHA Board of AnnuallyDirectors.thepremier conference tournament in women’s college hockey, the WCHA Final Faceoff weekend has evolved into a celebration of the sport’s past, present, and future by featuring the nation’s top programs and players. The 2023 event, scheduled for March 3-4 at Ridder Arena, welcomes fans of top women’s hockey back to its central lo cation, in addition to continuing to provide top-notch accommodations for WCHA teams.
The coach is one of the important factors in the players’ youth sports experience. How many times did you hear a player say, “I didn’t like the coach”. While we can say that the parents are to blame or make some other excuse, the coach is important. The country’s first-ever facility built specifically for women’s hockey in the country, Ridder Arena is home to the seven-time National Champion University of Minnesota Golden Gopher Women’s Hockey program. Since its opening in 2002, Ridder Arena has been a 15-time host of WCHA Championships (2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022), a regular host for NCAA Region als, and has been the place to drop the puck on Frozen Fours (2010, 2013, 2015, 2018, and upcoming 2025).
Minnesota Wilderness forward Barrett Hall was one of five players with NAHL ties taken in the 2022 NHLTheDraft.NAHL is pleased to announce that five players with NAHL ties were selected in the 2022 NHL Draft, which was held July 7-8 at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec. The five play ers was the most selected since 2019 when the NAHL had six players se lected. The first play er selected was former WildernessMinnesotaforward Zam Plante, who was selected #150 overall in Round 5 by the Pittsburgh Penguins. Plante, 17, played in the NAHL for the Wilderness during the 2020-21 season. The University of Minneso ta-Duluth commit also played the past two seasons for Hermantown High in Minnesota, where he put up 125 points in just 42 games played. Plante’s first career NAHL goal came on May 13, 2021 in a 6-2 win at Chippewa. He also spent time during the 2021-22 season in the USHL with the Chicago Steel.The next player taken was Minne sota Wilderness forward Barrett Hall, who was selected #164 overall in the 6th round by the Seattle Kraken. Hall, 18, spent this past season playing in the NAHL for the Wilder ness and recorded 20 points (5 goals, 15 assists) in 19 regular season games. He also posted five points in nine Rob ertson Cup Playoff games. On June 8, 2022, Hall announced his commitment to play NCAA Division I hockey for St. Cloud State University. He was one of only four Wilderness players to fin ish with a point-per-game average or better.Hall’s time with the Wilderness was spent in two phases, as he played his final season of high school hockey with Gentry Academy in between. In 25 games with the Stars, Hall led all scorers with 55 points (25 goals/30 as sists) in 25 games. His performance with Gentry also led to him being named one of ten finalists for Min nesota’s Mr. Hockey award, given annually to the state’s top senior high school hockey player. Hall is also an alum of the NA PHL, having played briefly for the Madison Capitols 18U team during the 2019-20 season. He played in five NAPHL games and recorded one goal. Right af ter Hall, the next NAHL player to go was former Corpus Christi IceRays de fenseman Hunter McDonald, who was taken #165 overall in the 6th round by the Phila delphia Flyers. Mc Donald, 20, played in the NAHL during the 2019-20 sea son for the IceRays. His first career NAHL goal came on March 6, 2020 in a 4-3 loss at New Mexico. Hall, who is committed to play NCAA Division I hockey at Northeastern Universi ty, spent the remainder of his junior career in the USHL with Omaha and Chicago.Atpick #169 overall in the 6th round, the Los Angeles Kings selected former former Minot Minotauros for ward Jared Wright,Wright.19,played in the NAHL for the Minotauros during the 202021 season. Prior to that he also played high school hockey in Minnesota for St. Thomas Academy. The Colgate University recruit played for the Oma ha Lancers in the USHL this past sea son, recording 34 points in 59 games played.
For maintaining above a 3.75 GPA in each semester of the season, 56 from the Western Collegiate Hockey Asso ciation have been named to American Hockey Coaches Association academic honors as 2021-22 Krampade Division I All-American Scholars. In addition to their academic achievements, players had to appear in at least 40% of their team’s games, with an exception for injured players and back-up goaltenders. Of the 523 Divi sion I honorees, the 56 WCHA honorees only trailed the 57 tabbed by the women of Hockey East across the nation’s five women’s hockey leagues. The 56 honorees skews from last season’s 81 honorees as the coaches as sociation adopted a revised criteria for 2020-21 to include a 3.6 minimum GPA without a required benchmark of com petition.This year’s list of WCHA honorees includes the Association’s 2021-22 Out standing Student-Athlete of the year in Ohio State’s Sophie Jaques. The defend er also earned special mention as she earned both All-American status both on and off the ice by the AHCA. All 29 NAHL teams will play between three and four regular-season games at the Show case, which is one of hockey’s most prominent and popular events of the entire season and has become the ‘Greatest Show on Ice.’ Scout Passes: Scout Passes for the 2022 NAHL Showcase will go on sale on Monday, Aug. 15 and will be available for purchase online at the NAHL Showcase website. All 58 NAHL Showcase games will be broadcast live and in HD through HockeyTV, the official broadcast provider of the NAHL. “The NAHL Showcase is truly the Greatest Show on Ice. No oth er event in the hockey world brings people together like the Showcase. The opportunity it represents for our teams and players is one that unique to the NAHL, and we always look forward to seeing a new crop of play ers and talent showcase their skills. The NA3HL also continues to make its mark and is one of the leaders in ju nior hockey with the advancement of players onto the NCAA. So far in 2022, the NA3HL has over 70+ college com mitments, with over half of those being NCAA commitments. In addition, over 300 former NA3HL players are current ly playing in the NCAA, and 26 former NA3HL are currently playing NCAA Division I hockey.

Prior to that, Copley spent the previous 2009-10 season playing for the California Titans 18U team in the NAPHL during its inaugural season. In 10 regular season games he was 6-1 with one shutout and had a 2.62 goals against and .871save percentage and also helped the Titans capture the first NAPHL 18U Championship. After a one-year stint in the USHL, Copley then spent two successful sea sons at the NCAA Division I level with Michigan Tech.
NA3HL sets new standard for player advancement
The Granite City Lumberjacks of the NA3HL are pleased to announce that defenseman Tal Halliday has committed to play NCAA Division III hockey for Concordia College in Minnesota. Halliday, 21, played the past three seasons in the NA3HL for the Jacks. The 6’0/175 lbs. native of Roseau, MN, played in 112 career NA3HL regular season games for the Jacks where he posted 21 goals and 69 assists for 90 ca reer Duringpoints. the 2021-22 season, put up 45 points (13 goals, 32 assists) in 42 games played. He was named to the to the All-NA3HL 2nd team, the NA3HL All-West Division Team, and named to the 2022 Fraser Cup All-Tournament Team.“Tal is a kid who will be extremely hard to replace on the back end. He was so dynamic for us. He had unbelievable vision and skating ability. We are excit ed for Tal to get this opportunity to play Division 3 hockey next year. Concordia is getting a really good one,” said Asso ciate Head Coach DJ Vold. Halliday also played in the NAHL during his junior career for both the St. Cloud Blizzard and Minot Minotauros during his rookie season in 2019-20 in which he was also named to the NA3HL All-West Division Team that season.

The North American 3 Hockey League (NA3HL) is pleased to an nounce that it is has once again set a new standard for player advancement to the North American Hockey League (NAHL) thanks to some record-setting numbers on the heels of the completion of the 2022 NAHL Entry Draft, which took place on Wednesday, June 15th. Not only did 34 NA3HL players sign a tender to play in the NAHL for the upcoming 2022-23 season, but 27 more players were selected in the 2022 NAHL EntryNoDraft.other league has had more movement and advanced more players onto play in the NAHL than the NA3HL. Thanks to additional and enhanced ini tiatives that have been in place for the past few years in cooperation with the NAHL, more players from the NA3HL play, practice, and earn NCAA Division I scholarships with the NAHL than any other“Itleague.issuch an opportune and won derful time to be involved and playing in the NA3HL. This season saw continued exposure initiatives that were put in place several years ago designed for NA3HL players to advance to the NAHL and be yond. These initiatives have increased the advancement numbers and provided an additional development path for those players in the NA3HL. The NA3HL en joys all the same events that the NAHL does and has great owners and coaches. We all share in the common mission of creating an enhanced level of play and competition that is focused on a player’s development and advancement,” said NAHL Commissioner and President MarkTheFrankenfeld.NA3HLnot only saw 61 of its players tendered or drafted by NAHL teams, but over 60 NA3HL alumni played in the NAHL this past season. The NA3HL also saw five current or former players make NCAA Division 1 commitments this past season. The NA3HL is the only USA Hock ey-certified Tier III junior hockey league and the only league that has an exclu sive NAHL tendering system available only to NA3HL players. The tendering and draft pick process selections play a big part in the eventual advancement of players each “NA3HLseason.players are getting called up, playing, affiliated, and practicing on a regular basis with NAHL teams and we have seen so much interaction with the two leagues that it has built momen tum to lead into what took place during the NAHL Draft,” said NA3HL Com missioner Blake Macnicol. “We are also continuing to ensure that the competi tion and league-wide events remain at the highest level, while also maintaining a focus on educating our players about NCAA compliance and the importance of education.”Aspartof the enhanced initiatives that have now been in place for multi ple seasons, all NAHL teams engaged and worked in cooperation with NA3HL teams for increased access to players, including allowing NA3HL players to practice with NAHL teams during the season. The program created additional dialogue between NAHL and NA3HL teams to find prospects and provide them an in-season opportunity for NAHL ex perience and evaluation. Its direct bene fits are resulted in one-of-a-kind oppor tunities not found anywhere else in USA Hockey-sanctioned junior hockey.

Da Beauty league has attracted various sponsors for the six teams in its league that this year include BIC Corporation, Nor-Son Inc., Tradition Companies, Tria Orthopedic Center, Element Electronics and Walser Auto motive. Each team is made up of NHL players, collegiate players, and elite amateurs. Coaches for each team are also former NHL players and they have the power to trade players throughout the season on their quest for the John Scott Cup. Each team consists of any where between 10-14 players during any given point of the season.
Braemar Arena in Edina has been buzzing with excitement as “Da Beau ty League” has returned to Braemar Arena for its seventh season in action. The horn blasted off July 13 to get things underway for the season opener. This once-a-year six-week league brews a lot of excitement within the Minnesota hockey community as it provides hockey heads everywhere the opportunity to see several prominent NHL players up close and personal at an affordable cost. “Da Beauty League feels like its become part of the community. Of course, there are million-dollar NHL players competing in pickup-style competitive games but it feels like the atmosphere of a local high school game or outdoor hockey game,” said Ben Hankinson, on of several co-founders of the league. “The fans get the upclose experience to see some of the best players in the world in a relaxed and fun Thisenvironment.”seasonsome top names the league will feature are: Brock Boes er, Derek Stepan, Eric Haula, K’An dre Miller, Zach Parise, Justin Kloos, Jake Guentzel, Nate Schmidt, James Van Riemsdyk, Brock Nelson, Alex Goligoski, Nick Leddy, Nick Bjugs tad, and Jake Gardiner. Some famous names that have come through in the past include TJ Oshie, Paul Martin and Dustin“DaByfuglien.BeautyLeague has taken on a life of its own over the past 5-6 years. It’s been incredible to see the players show up on summer nights to play some pickup hockey at an extremely competitive level along with getting a great workout,” Hankinson said. “That’s the best part about it, they just show up, and to have fans, a ref, and a scoreboard brings out the best in them. We weren’t quite sure what to expect when the league started but it’s sure been a fun ride with big crowds, great players and charities that benefit from all of this.”

The league trophy is named af ter Scott, a former NHL all-star, and teams compete for the ultimate prize being the John Scott Cup which is a beer keg. Scott is a former NHL play er who put together a 10-year career and played for a myriad of teams. One of the major highlights from Scott’s career came when he was named cap tain of the Pacific Division team in the 2016 NHL All-Star game and went on to win the game’s Most Valuable Play er.

Da Beauty League puts together three games a night every Wednesday through the month of July that start at 5 p.m. and end around 8:30 p.m. The league will increase their games to ev ery Monday and Wednesday in August up until the Championship game on August 24. Tickets are $15 per night or spectators can buy a $99 package for the five week season. Kids have free “Theentry.fan experience at Da Beauty League is one of a kind, from the cheap ticket prices, to getting a free mullet cut, to seeing the best players around play like they care all in a small town local rink,” Hankinson said. “Not to mention there are back to back-toback games with loaded lineups. It’s so fun for the players to see the fans enjoy the summer atmosphere as well because there are always smiling faces and a few roaring laughs in the crowd on any given night. It’s so great to see the kids getting autographs from their favorite players and watching the Kids clamor for the attention of some of hockey’s biggest stars who come home to Minnesota and play at Braemar Arena in Edina. The league is a non-profit and ben efits several charities throughout the state. The league will run through most of August on Monday and Wednesday nights. It also serves as an opportunity for NHL players to come home to their families and still train with their colleqgues in a fun, yet at times, competitive atmosphere.PHOTOS players interact with the fans as well.” For those that are unable to see the games live and in-person, the league has put together a stream to the games that fans can access on their website at dabeautyleague.com.
A key pillar of Da Beauty League is their relationship with multiple charities who ultimately are the over all winners, garnering proceeds from the league to help fund their specific causes. These charities include the United Heroes League, Shine A Ligh7, the Hendrickson Foundation and the Herb Brooks Foundation. The league paired up with Shine A Ligh7 on July 2 to help put the spotlight and bring awareness to mental health in youth athletes and youth overall. “We are proud to support Shine A Ligh7 and are excited to have them bring their important cause and fam ily fun event to Da Beauty League,” said Hankinson. “My favorite part of Da Beauty League is the small home town feel you have between the play ers, fans, and staff. Minnesota Hockey recently broke a record for the amount of players particpating in the sport. Yet only a select few get chosen by an NHL team to perhaps one day push a puck in an NHL arena in front of thousands of fans. This summer the NHL held their annual draft where the dream of hundreds of kids became a reality. But being drafted isn’t a ticket to the NHL. These players will still have to prove themselves at the college, junior and international level. But make no mistake. The players listed below are the best of the best in their age group.
Sam Rinzel Defense, Chaska Mn 6’4”, 181 Pounds Round 1 Pick 25 to the Chicago Blackhawks College Commit: U of M Gophers Sam Rinzel, a Chaska native picked two teams later then fellow Chaska native Jimmy Snuggerud is also a University of Minnesota Golden Gophers commit. The Blackhawks took the tall defenseman with their 25th pick in the NHL Entry Draft. Rinzel although having a similar background and future with Snuggerud has taken a much different route to becoming a first-round pick in the NHL. He played all his youth and high school hock ey for his hometown of Chaska, where last season Rinzel had 9 goals, 29 assist for 38 points in 27 games. He also played 21 games for the Waterloo Black Hawks in the USHL where he had only two goals and eight assists for 10 points but had a impressive six-game span without allowing a goal against when he was on the ice. Rinzel will play another season with the Waterloo Black Hawks this coming season, then will play for the Golden Gophers in the 2023-24 season. Rinzel is a tall defenseman who can move very well with and without the puck. His skating ability gives him the ability to utilize his size and make it easier to break up passes and plays with his stick. He has a sharp and crisp shot from the point but tends to aim for the goalie’s mid-section. This gives players in front of the net a chance for a tip or rebound.
Ryan Chesley Defense, Mahtomedi Mn 6’0”, 200 Pounds Round 2 Pick 37 to the Washington Capitals College Commit: U of M Gophers Ryan Chesley, a native of Mahtomedi, attended Shattuck-St. Mary’s from 2017 to 2019-20 before joining the United States National Development Program along with Isaac Howard. Chesley was drafted Thursday July 7 by the Washington Capitals in the second round of the NHL Entry Draft. He like many of the other Minnesota native draft picks played for the U.S. National under-18 team and the USHL National Development team. Chesley had 12 goals 17 assist and 29 points in 59 games in the 2021 season. He also led all players in the World Junior Classic with a plus-13 plus/minus rating. Chesley will be joining the Minnesota Golden Gophers in the 2022-23 College Hockey season. Chesley is an aggressive and powerful defenseman who can move the puck well in transition. His skating and puck handling is a slight concern, and he is known to be inac curate with his shot, but these are all things that can be improved on through development. He has the potential to be a good powerplay defensemen, as he had a very powerful shot, and has solid awareness with the puck. Chesley will need to develop his skating skills through college hockey before reaching the pro level, but he has the potential to be an impact player on an NHL squad.

Cruz Lucius RW, Grant, Gentry Academy 6’0”, 160 Pounds Round 4 Pick 124 to the Carolina Hurricanes College Commit: Wisconsin Cruz Lucius, a native of Grant Minnesota, played his youth and high school hockey with Gentry Academy until joining the USHL with the United States National Develop ment Program.
Daimon Gardner of Warroad went in the fourth round with the 112th overall pick tot he Vancouver Canucks. Gardner is headed to Clarkson University.
Gardner is a big body standing at 6’4” 200 pounds who is not afraid to use his body to get to the slot, and don’t forget his 200-foot game as he is able to use that frame to break up plays in the defensive zone. He projects to be a way out from getting on the NHL roster, but all of the potential is there for Gardner.
Lucius is a player with a good shot, but his puck skills and excellent passing is what he excels at. He has incredible awareness with the puck on his stick and can see a play develop before it happens.
Isaac Howard Left Wing, Hudson WI 5’10”, 178 Pounds Round 1 Pick 31 to the Tampa Bay Lightning College Commit: Univ. of Minnesota-Duluth Now, first off, yes Isaac Howard is from Hudson Wisconsin, but it is a suburb of St. Paul and a part of the Twin Cities metro area. Howard was picked in the first round by the Lightning with the 31st overall selection. Howard attended Shattuck St. Mary’s from 2018 to 2020, where he played his until he joined the U.S. National Under-17 team in the 2020-21 season. Howard scored 27 goals and 27 assist in 54 games that season, good enough to get him on the Under-18 team, where he played in the World Junior Classic in 2020-21. He played in the following year’s World Junior Classic as well, netting 6 goals and 5 assist for 11 points in 6 games. Howard is a University of Minnesota-Duluth com mit and will play for the Bulldogs in the upcoming college hockey season. Howard is an offensively minded forward, and a natural scorer who has had good progression with his playmaking as well. Howard has 33 goals, 49 assist and 82 points in 60 games for the U.S. National team this past season and continued that in this year’s WJC-18 with 11 points in 6 games. Many NHL prospects took notice of Howards play making ability as he had 71 total assists with his time with the United States National De velopment program. Being drafted later than many expected including himself, Howard is a player with a chip on his shoulder and was drafted to a team who just completed a third straight season making it to the Stanley Cup finals. Howard is a projected top-six winger who has the potential to be a legit NHL scorer.
Daimon Gardner, Center, Warroad Mn 6’4”, 201 Pounds Round 4 Pick 112 to the Vancouver Canucks College Commit: Clarkson University Daimon Gardner was in fact born in Canada, but he played his youth and high school hockey with Warroad. He had a remarkable high school career scoring 45 goals, 38 assist for 83 points in 30 games in his senior season. After High School Gardner played in the USHL for the Omaha Lancers and Tri-City Storm. Gardner was selected in the 4th round of the 2022 NHL Entry Draft by the Vancouver Canucks. He will play for the Chilliwack Chiefs in the BCHL this upcoming season and is a college commit to Clarkson University.
Lucius has many things to like as a prospect, but he will need to work on his skating if he wants to see ice time and success at the next level.
Prior Lake’s Alex Bump was chosen in the fifth round and 133rd overall by the Phildelphia Flyers. Bump is committed to play college hockey at the University of Vermont.
Jimmy Snuggerud, Forward, Chaska Mn 6’2”, 187 Pounds Round 1 Pick 23 to the St. Louis Blues College Commit: U of M Gophers Jimmy Snuggerud was the first Minnesota native drafted in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft. He was the 23rd overall pick in the first round by the St. Louis Blues Thursday, July 7. Snuggerud is a native of Chaska Minnesota, where he played his youth hockey along with a year of High School before joining the USHL in the 2020-21 season. He also was a part of the U.S. National U18 Team, where he played in the World Junior Classic, scoring three goals, and four assists during the tournament. Snuggerud is a University of Minnesota Commit and will play for the Gophers this upcoming college hockey season.
Lucius had nine goals and nine assists for 18 points in 23 games played this last season with the U.S. National Under 18 team. He is a college commit to the Wis consin Badgers and will play for them this upcoming season.

Snuggerud’s Draft stock was on the rise after his performance with the U18 National team. He had 24 goals and 39 assist for 63 points in 58 games for the Under-18 team, U.S. National Team Development Coach Adam Nightingale credited Snuggerud as being one of the most improved players in the NTDP Program. He has a great shot that can be released without having to set his feet and gets the puck off accurately. Snuggerud has improved his on-ice awareness and skating the past few years, a big reason for his recent success. He brings good size and physicality to his game which translates to goals in front of the net. Jimmy gives the Blues a solid overall player that projects to be a top-six forward.

Barret Hall C, Apple Valley Mn 6’0” 170 Pounds Round 6 Pick 164 to the Seattle Kraken College Commit: St. Cloud State Barrett Hall, a captain for Gentry Academy this season is native of Apple Valley. Hall made his name from his play this last couple seasons, but still a player who lived under the radar. He had 55 points this last season with 25 goals and 30 assist in 25 games. He was able to get some NAHL games under his belt as well with the Minnesota Wilderness, where he scored five goals and 15 assists in 19 games with the Wilderness. Hall was a 6th round pick by the Seattle Kraken in this year’s NHL Entry Draft. He is a College Commit to the St. Cloud State Huskies where he will play in the 2024 season. Hall is another player with excellent hockey-IQ, but as coaches of his have said, his best attribute is his competitiveness. He is a high motor player with great skill as well. Hall will have to work on his strength and quickness before hitting a NHL roster but he has the attitude and skill to do so.

Connor Kurth RW, Elk River Mn 5’11” 214 Pounds Round 6 Pick 214 to the Tampa Bay Lightning College Commit: University of Minnesota Connor Kurth is a native of Elk River Minnesota but played his youth and high school hockey with Gentry Academy. Kurth did play his final high school years with the USHL for the Dubuque Fighting Saints. He scored 35 goals 46 assists for 81 points in 62 games in his final season with the Fighting Saints. Kurth was drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 6th round of the 2022 NHL Entry Draft. He is a college commit to the University of Minnesota and will play for the Gophers this upcoming season. Kurth playing junior hockey earlier than other players his age will only help his development at the next level. He is a good east to west skater with a sturdy frame and can shoot the puck with power and accuracy. Kurth also has hands that can deceive the opponent very easily. He was undrafted in the 2021 NHL draft, which looking at his 2021 season stats was a motivation for him going into this year’s draft. Kurths biggest concern is his north to south skating speed and balance. He has a different skating style which has prospects concerned. He can move quickly in shorty strides and can move the puck very well, so some minor adjustments for Kurth and he will make a impact at the next level.
