Look, play & learn!

A journey through the alphabet

Written by Sarah Edwards Illustrator Peter Reddy Based on characters originated by Lyn Wendon

Letterland is an imaginary place where letters come to life! The friendly Letterland characters help children to easily understand the sound and shape of letters – one of the key skills needed when learning to read and write. Simple stories about the Letterland characters explain letter sounds and shapes, so that confusion over similar looking letters is avoided and children are motivated to listen, think and learn. The key to success lies in Letterland’s ‘sound trick’. By just starting to say a character’s name, such as ‘a…’ for Annie Apple; ‘b...’ for Bouncy Ben; ‘c...’ for Clever Cat, a child automatically says the correct letter sound. It’s that simple! The combination of memorable characters and proven educational principles makes Letterland the ideal way to introduce your child to the alphabet. For more information go to www.letterland.com

Here are some ways you can enjoy this book with your child. • Read the story together, look at the pictures and talk about the things the Letterlanders are doing and the places Dippy Duck has discovered. Have you and your child been to any similar places? • Look carefully and Ƥnd all 26 Letterlanders in each scene. Can your child Ƥnd objects that begin with a character’s sound, such as sunƪowers beside Sammy Snake, a guitar by Golden Girl and a water well near Walter Walrus? • Find the same Letterlander in each scene. Look for things that begin with that character’s sound and talk about them. • Can you spot Dippy’s duckling in each scene? Look carefully as he’s usually hiding! • Which Letterlander’s sound starts your child’s name? Look through the book and Ƥnd things that start with that sound. • See how many questions you can answer in Quarrelsome Queen’s Quiz at the back of the book.

Dippy and her little duck, have got a busy day. They’re having fun exploring. They love to run and play.

Now Dippy tells her duckling, “I think you soon will see, Letterland’s a busy place. You must stay close to me.”

Look, they’re in the schoolyard now. Their friends are also there. Sammy’s got his skipping rope, while Uppy’s in the air!

Now who has spilt his marbles? And who has brought a ball? And where is Dippy’s duckling? He’s only very small!

Look, they’re at the market now. They’ve got some things to buy. There’s Peter buying pumpkins. Perhaps he’ll make a pie?

Harry has some honey pots. And Lucy’s list is long. Poor Dippy’s lost her duckling. I wonder where he’s gone?
