Learning sounds and spelling patterns Use the Picture Coded side to introduce the characters and the sound the Letterlanders make. Use the plain sides to practice saying the sounds. The abbreviated Letterland spelling stories along with some sample words are on the plain letter side of the cards. The Letterland stories can be found in full in the trilogy of books - Letterland ABC, Beyond ABC, and Far Beyond ABC. The stories can also be found in Letterland Teachers Guides or the Phonics Touch & Spell Book.

Spelling story
Example words
Learning activities Show the Picture Coded side of the card and ask, ‘What is happening here?’ Listen as the story is retold. Then turn to the plain letter side. Remember that when the Letterlanders go into words they hide behind their letter shapes. Hold up the plain letter side, asking only for the sound, not the Letterland story. That way, we don’t give away their hiding places! If help is needed, cue the correct answer by turning to the Picture Coded side, or show a child that he or she has got it right. Quick Dash Gradually build up the number of cards you hold up, asking the child to give only the sound, until you have covered all 40. Then have some fun and see how fast you can go through all the cards in a Quick Dash!

I hear with my little ear Choose a digraph such as ‘sh’ then take turns to say all of the things you can think of that start with that sound. ‘I hear with my little ear something beginning with sh’. Give examples such as sheep, show, ship, and shell. Consolidating knowledge of letter shapes These Touch & Spell Flashcards have textured letter shapes and arrows showing the ‘movement pathways’ for forming each letter shape. By getting these ‘movement pathways’ correct you will be ensuring that when your child moves on to joined-up writing, the transition will be much easier. Once the finger movements on the textured cards are smooth, give your child a pencil so they can write the letter shapes and whole words on paper. The example words on the plain letter sides of the cards are a good place to start as they are mostly decodable words (can be sounded out easily).
