How to use these copymasters These Letterland Word Bank Copymasters provide practice and reinforcement for all the essential recurring English spelling patterns. They are intended to consolidate learning in the Letterland Phonics Teacher’s Guide, and assume knowledge of a-z and A-Z shapes and sounds.
Create an impact Enlarge each copymaster to 141% (from A4 to A3) to display on a flip chart or wall, making a highly visual and memorable focal point as you teach the relevant sound. Brainstorm for more words that contain the sound as a group or whole class activity. You could even enlarge selected pictograms further and mount them to create a stronger focal point. Children can then contribute to the display with their own words which contain particular sounds. Encourage skim reading to find examples.
Make a book Provide a folder so that each child can collect their own copies of each sheet and build a personal record of all the phonemes and example words they have learned so far.
Line up the spelling choices When teaching, for example, the long vowel sounds, you could create a wall display showing the variety of spelling patterns commonly used to spell each long sound.
Teaching order These Copymasters are ordered in groups of similar sounds. If you are using the Letterland Phonics Teacher’s Guide the example words listed are fully decodable. Feel free to use the copymasters flexibly. Children are exposed to new words every day, and in the Letterland context you can share the story explanation for a new sound to suit your needs.
There is a unique difference between the Letterland approach and other phonic approaches to teaching digraphs. Typically the challenge for children when they see a new digraph is to: • take note of a two letter sequence • override their initial learning • memorise a new sound • apply it to an unknown word to decode it. With Letterland teaching, instead of having to override their initial learning, children are able to utilise it to remember the new sound. Each new story explanation is an extension of the alphabet story logic, confirming the initial learning and then building on it. Now the Letterland friends are simply interacting because they meet each other in a word! By sharing the Letterland story logic as the need arises you can create an appetite for more phonics. The typical result is earlier success in reading and spelling.
