WELCOME TO
IOWA STATE UNIVERSITY I am so excited you have chosen Iowa State University as your new home and that you are considering becoming a member of our Greek community! The Iowa State Greek community is a large and growing community, and we pride ourselves in our community’s commitment to success. The Panhellenic sorority community at Iowa State is one of a kind and there is truly a home for every woman! When you choose to join a sorority, you are adding a whole new experience to your adventure at Iowa State. Your sorority experience will help create friendships, connections and memories that will last long after your time at ISU while also helping you discover the potential within yourself to be the individual you never thought possible! The women in our community were able to find their “home away from home” through Panhellenic Sorority Formal Recruitment – let us help you find yours! Participating in Panhellenic Sorority Formal Recruitment was a turning point in my development to become a more well-rounded student and individual. I was introduced to women who shared similar values and participating in recruitment helped start to create my college support system. I can say with confidence that your experience in Panhellenic Sorority Formal Recruitment will open your eyes to all the opportunities that are available to you during your time at Iowa State and will make a lasting impression for years to come. Please use this booklet as an informational guide to our Panhellenic sororities and to our Greek community. You will find a variety of topics covered in this booklet from chapter information, finances and what to wear throughout the week of recruitment! When preparing for Panhellenic Sorority Formal Recruitment it is important to bring a positive attitude and an open mind so that you can gain the most memorable experience possible! Welcome to this exciting new adventure in your collegiate experience!
YOUR ADVENTURE STARTS HERE! Sincerely, Taylor C. Vice President of Recruitment Collegiate Panhellenic Council
RHO G AM M A I N F O R MATIO N Recruitment Counselors (also known as Rho Gammas) hold a leadership position within the College Panhellenic Council to positively promote sorority life to potential new members before, during and after the formal recruitment period. Recruitment counselors work together to speak about all of the wonderful benefits of sorority membership to women interested in joining a sorority. They strive to increase interest and participation during recruitment. Recruitment counselors are sorority women, but remain impartial, meaning they are not focused on and are not directly affiliated with their specific chapters for a time frame that is identified within the College Panhellenic Council.
Alli B., Ali H., Abbie L., Alex B., Alyssa M., Abby M., Allison S., Ally T.
Here are some topics that recruitment counselors discuss with potential new members: • Academic support and achievement • Responsibilities within the fraternity/sorority community and chapter organization • Philanthropic and community service activities • Leadership opportunities • Lifelong friendships • Value of membership beyond college years As a potential new member, you should get to know your recruitment counselor and feel comfortable going to her with any questions you may have about recruitment or sorority life. Remember: during recruitment, the recruitment counselor is your best friend!

During our event, we will share with you our sorority experience and also provide you information about Alpha Phi’s colonization. We wish you all the best for a great formal recruitment!

Delta Zeta is the second largest fraternal organization in the nation. Delta Zeta is one of the only sororities, most are women’s fraternities. Delta Zeta has over 240,000 members. Philan t h r o p y _ Our two main philanthropy’s are DZ Dogs and Turtle Tug. We participate in Turtle Tug during the fall and the organization we support is called the Painted Turtle Camp. The mission of the painted turtle camp is to provide a year-round, life-changing environment and authentic camp experience for children with chronic and life-threatening illnesses. This camp supports medical needs and inspires them to reach beyond their illness. Turtle tug is an event where members of Delta Zeta are required to come up with two teams that will be participating in a tug of war contest. During the spring time, we participate in another national philanthropy called DZ Dogs. The proceeds go to the Starkey Hearing Foundation whose mission is to change the social consciousness of hearing and hearing matters through education and research; while providing the gift of hearing to those in need around the world. The event we hold for DZ Dogs is like an all-you-can-eat hot dog stand. This past semester we received pictures of children and their new hearing aids that were signed to Delta Zeta by the founders of the Starkey Hearing Foundation. Other local organizations that we support include Ames Youth and Sheltered Services and Bethany Manor, which is an elderly home that we volunteer at.

This organization decreases the likelihood of children returning to foster care and promotes success in school. CASA volunteers currently represent 35% of children in the foster care system and Kappa Alpha Theta dedicates their philanthropies in hopes of increasing this percentage. The Gamma Pi chapter at Iowa State University holds two annual philanthropies that benefit CASA. Theta Twists, a foodbased event selling soft pretzels, and Capture the Kite, a capture the flag tournament, are two of the chapter’s most recent philanthropic events. Many women within the Gamma Pi chapter take advantage of service opportunities to work with children who benefit from CASA in our community including Lutheran Services of Iowa: Beloit Residential Facility, Youth and Shelter Services, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Kate Mitchell School, and many more. In addition to CASA, our chapter also supports The Kappa Alpha Theta Foundation as a National Philanthropy that aids members in Education, Leadership, and Service endeavors.

MEMBERSHIP RECRUITMENT ACCEPTANCE
BINDING AGREEMENT Membership Recruitment Acceptance Binding Agreement (MRABA for short) is the document potential members sign when making final selections during recruitment. The MRABA is broken into six sections, all of which someone will go over with you before you submit your final selections or preferences. The sections might seem official and confusing, but they’re nothing to freak out about. Here is a breakdown:
If I do not receive an invitation to membership from a group that I have listed, I am eligible for continuous open bidding.
I am willing to accept an invitation to membership from any sorority or women’s fraternity that I list on this agreement.
I have the option of not submitting an agreement at this time.
If you don’t get a bid from a group that you list, you can join a chapter through continuous open bidding (COB), or informal recruitment. This is only available to groups that have open spots in their chapter, which is rare.
Only list the chapters that you are willing to join or accept a bid for membership from.
You don’t have to sign and submit an MRABA card right now. If you go through the final round and decide a sorority isn’t for you, at least you know for sure.
I may limit my choices to just one OR list any sorority or women’s fraternity whose preference-round (last) event I attended (up to two), and from which I am willing to accept membership. I realize that by not listing the maximum number of events I attended, I may be limiting my potential to join any other NPC group during formal recruitment should I not be placed with my choice(s).
Once I submit this agreement, I am bound by the National Panhellenic Conference one-calendar year rule. This rule states that if I receive an invitation to membership from a group that I have listed and then do not accept it, I am not eligible to be pledged to any other NPC member sorority or women’s fraternity on this campus for one calendar year (12-month period) from the time of this signing.
You can only rank those chapters whose events you attended (if you went to one event, listing two isn’t an option). You don’t have to rank all the chapters you attend, but we encourage you to maximize or list all the options available to you, as it gives you a better chance of being matched to a group. If you attend preference (final) round events for more than one chapter, but could never in a million years see yourself as a member of one of those chapters, it’s OK to not list that one as long as you understand the risk you’re taking by not listing all options available to you.
If you receive a bid from a group you have listed and later decide not to pledge or choose to break your pledge, you can’t try to join another NPC group on your campus for one year. If you are not initiated and transfer schools, you can participate in recruitment at the first opportunity.
Once I submit this agreement to the College Panhellenic Council, I cannot change the order of my preferences or add or delete a preference. Know what you want! After submitting preferences, you can’t go back.
See? Not so scary. In the end, just remember the MRABA is in place to help you. If you have questions, talk to the Office of Greek Affairs staff members, a Panhellenic executive member or a Rho Gamma.
