HOW TO JOIN The Iowa State Greek community has lots of options for students looking to join a fraternity. With so many different fraternities to choose from, the process can be overwhelming. Here are some tips to help you throughout the process: • Start early! Begin looking at the Greek community website (www.greek.iastate.edu) and chapter websites to learn more about each organization. • Visit campus! Any time you are in Ames, you are welcome to contact the Office of Greek Affairs at greekaffairs@ iastate.edu or 515-294-1023 to get connected with a chapter you are interested in. • Attend orientation! You can visit with chapters and learn more about what the community has to offer! • Contact chapters! This guide provides you the recruitment chair for each chapter. Feel free to reach out to them! • Attend recruitment events! Get to know the members of the chapters you are interested in! • The Multicultural Greek Council and National Pan-Hellenic Council will have events throughout the fall and spring semesters. Come check out fraternities you are interested in once you are on campus. • Once you receive a bid to join an organization, you are welcome to join at that point or keep looking at other organizations.

2

• When you join a chapter and have the opportunity to move into the chapter house, make sure you break your contract with the Department of Residence by July 7. the For more information, please visit www.greek.iastate.edu/housing/ contract-breaks.

WELCOME We are glad that you are interested in joining our Greek community! Our fraternities provide a lot of opportunities that will help you to make the most out of your college experience. The members of our community strive everyday to exemplify our Greek community’s set of values: Academics, Civic Engagement, Friendship, Leadership, and Social Justice. Our fraternities are banded together through three councils. We have 32 fraternities in the Interfraternity Council, four fraternities within the Multicultural Greek Council, and two fraternities in the National Pan-Hellenic Council. Fraternities on campus are either local to Iowa State or part of an inter/national organization. The Interfraternity Council is home to 32 fraternities, many who are a part of the North-American Interfraternity Conference, a trade association that works to ensure fraternities can operate in an environment conducive to their success through advocacy, collaboration and education. 29 of the fraternities have homes south of campus. The chapters vary greatly in membership size, ranging anywhere from 20 – 120 members. IFC organizations participate in recruitment 365 days of the year. Many students will join the summer before or during their first semester of their first year at Iowa State through connections in Greek Visit Day or Orientation. Students are encouraged to start looking at organizations early through websites and marketing so they can start narrowing down their search. The Multicultural Greek Council serves to improve and create dialogue and cooperation between parallel-goaled organizations. Membership includes fraternities and sororities that have an element of diversity as a foundation to its values including Latinx, Asian/Pacific-Islander and LGBTQQIA+. Chapters within MGC vary how they welcome members in their organizations. Some chapters recruit members at any point in their collegiate career, some chapters only accept members with an established GPA. The Multicultural Greek Council hosts Meet the Greeks each semester to promote individual organizations. The National Pan-Hellenic Council at Iowa State University is home to six of the nine international organizations which are called the “Divine Nine.” This is a collaborative organization of historically African American international Greek lettered fraternities and sororities. Members interested in joining will participate in a process called intake. Members must have an established Iowa State GPA before joining and are encouraged to attend Meet the Greeks, held each semester for each chapter and/or attend an informational night for one of the organizations. We are very excited for you to start your recruitment journey. We are confident that there is a perfect fraternity that will allow you to excel in your college career! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us: The Office of Greek Affairs 515-294-1023 or greekaffairs@iastate.edu.

FINANCIAL COMMITMENT FINANCIAL RESPONSIBILITY IS IMPORTANT FOR ALL COLLEGE STUDENTS. Every member of a fraternity or sorority agrees to be fiscally responsible as a student and a chapter member. Each chapter conducts their own billing and financial processes through online or payment plans. The chapter bills separately from the university bill. Membership fees include local and inter/national (if applicable) membership dues, one-time fees (such as initiation or new member fees) and room and board, if the chapter has a house. Oftentimes financial aid packages can be applied to fraternity and sorority costs. As each student has an individualized award package, please check with the Office of Student Financial Aid for more information. There are many scholarships awarded to Greek members through their local chapter, inter/national organization and through Iowa State University. Members are encouraged to seek out scholarships through these resources or contact the Office of Student Financial Aid at www.financialaid.iastate.edu.
