hey! My name is Catherine Leung and I am a second year student studying at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture. I believe architecture is a powerful tool that is both shaped by, and is able to shape personal stories and experiences. Architecture has the ability to shelter and protect or isolate and discriminate. My projects are driven by bringing out the good in architecture by designing for the people and the community.

Toronto, Ontario April 2021 Academic The Visionary Library is a local community library on Danforth Avenue and Broadview Avenue that especially serves the vulnerable, marginalized groups at the core of Downtown Toronto. The library features a woodworking workshop, aiming to educate the unemployed who seek to integrate back into society. An adult school located behind serves a similar purpose, bringing more people into the library. The core design of the library is the circular atrium, a place for children to play or performances to be held. The atrium can be seen from anywhere within and outside the library, providing a sense of community.

Richmond Hill, Ontario February 2021 Academic On a cold winter day, one of Canada’s favourite activity is ice skating. At the Richmond Green Skate Trail of Richmond Hill, Ontario, Bloom is a temporary pavillion installation, resembling a blooming flower, that provides shelter and warmth to skaters. A hearth sits at the heart of the pavillion, surrounded by a set of raw steel cladded walls, followed by a set of translucent corrugated plastic cladded walls, allowing the pavillion to glow and be seen by skaters far away. The walls can be moved radially into multiple combinations that tell different narratives.

Washington, D.C. September 2021 Academic

In collaboration with Jenny Chen and Tara Natalia

Located at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C., the Bridge pavilion encloses the history of the Vietnam War and guides its occupants all the way back to the year of 1955. Sourced from an abandoned construction factory nearby, the pavilion is built with merely three materials. The upper section of the Bridge pavilion features units of blocked glass, framed by deconstructed metal railings that support the entire structure. The use of glass blocks creates a pattern in which the light filters through, illuminating and playing with shadows as users occupy the space. Moreover, the pavilion serves as an extension of knowledge from the Vietnam Veterans Memorial through the use of infographics, created from dismantled sliding visual display units, bridging the past and present. The infographics are placed like a gallery in the lower section of the pavilion, where its users can gain insight on the war, while having a direct sight line to the memorial through a horizontal window that sits above the boards. The modest exterior of the pavilion creates the illusion of a subtle rise and fall in its surrounding landscape, reminiscent of the delicate form of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Site Plan

Waterloo, Ontario October 2021 Academic As old houses are being demolished and the vertical city is embraced, many older generations take advantage of the rising housing market as a financial investment. This leaves the younger generation behind, where purchasing their first home becomes more and more out of reach. To combat this problem, affordable housing is pushed forward, where private units are minimal-containing only a bedroom and bathroom, whereas common spaces are shared, such as the living room, kitchen, and other amenities, lowering the costs. In addition to affordable housing, due to technology, we have become more and more isolated from each other, oblivious to those who live next door. “More Than Neighbours” allows residents to interact through clusters of neighbourhoods through the encouragement of sharing resources and ideas.

Original Plan (half of a floor)

Located in Waterloo, Ontario, the project takes a typical high density post-war apartment building and adapts it to cater to the needs of the growing city. Not only does this promote affordability, but it also provides a sustainable leeway to adapt to the ever-changing population in a sustainable way, rather than resorting to demolition.

Kitchener, Ontario December 2021 Academic Located in kitchener, ontario, the performance theatre transforms an old police station into a much needed arts hub in the growing city. In relation to its program, the theatre explores the relationship between an actor and the audience, where the architecture is the actor, giving a performance to its audience-- the occupants. The users enter the space in a linear path that weaves throughout the building, initially coming in contact with rehearsal halls and multi-media spaces, anticipating the arrival of the theatres. The walls of the circulation expand and compress, metaphorical to the development of a plot, while creating pockets of spaces that allow informal programs to take place, including seating areas, informal performance spaces, and an outdoor light-show and performance stage.

Cambridge, Ontario December 2020 Academic Located in the small town of Cambridge, Ontario, the Sensory House is a student residence designed for the visually impaired. By taking the focus away from visual intrepretation, the other four senses are heightened and become the prime ingredients. The house features a simple circulation that the occupant can physically touch and follow, while being led from the outside to inside and throughout the building (directed by the blue line). The home also features distinct texture and colours representing different rooms, and a controlled travel of soundwaves. Windows and skylights are strategically placed and angled to let in diffused and direct sunlight according to when each facility is typically used (ex. morning and evening direct sunlight is present at the dining table), providing warmth to the program.

The cottage was designed through the process of drafting on AutoCAD and then modelled to scale, using a laser cutter to cut the pieces. A variety of materials were selectively chosen to represent the design, including cardboard, veneer, plywood, plexiglass, spray painted frames, and landscape trees. The materials were assembled with modelling glue and held in place with drafting tape.

Vaughan, Ontario January 2019 Academic

In collaboration with Anastasia Tyutyunnik

From designing and drafting on AutoCAD to fabrication, a residential home was modelled through wood-working techniques. The model studied the compartments used to build a typical residential home through light frame wood construction. Beginning from the foundation, first floor, second floor, to the roof, the location and usage of construction components such as joists, studs, and trusses were examined.
