Choreographing a Landscape of Contingency El Parkway, BogotĂĄ, Colombia
Mobilizing the boundaries around the Norm, the Alternative and the Not-yet-known The project operates within the corporeal dimensions of cognitive processes. As Bergson said, we gain knowledge though a sudden dissociation from a vast canvas. Infatuated with being clear and concise in a world cut out for scientific knowledge, do we leave behind something untapped of the fluidity of the world which eludes logical reasoning and scientific methods? Teusaquillo is a locality built in 1950s following the principles of the Garden City Movement and over time became highly fenced and gated as a result of Bogota’s turbulent past. By constructing the material conditions for people to collectively perform alternative ways of gathering, I aim to agitate the impermanent boundary around what is known and accepted. The built intervention consists of i) a promenade paved with bricks and rubble aggregate to support the movement of huge crowds; ii) a chain of bioretention basins which harvest and reuse stormwater in mist irrigations systems; and iii) column plinths which enable the erection of lightweight structures of various sizes during festivities. It is an interlocking network in which things, be it water, plants, identities etc., are all along never-ending paths of movement. Like a stream, they shape their banks as they flow. Within this misty landscape, boundaries are defined by the reach of thoughts and bodily movement. TU Delft/ 2018 - 2019 Supervisors : Alberto AltÊs Arlandis, Jorge Mejia Hernandez, Gilbert Koskamp

Three pictures are made for the three exchanges in the concept diagram. To make these pictures, the task of the architect to know the actual facts that constitute them. The dreamlike mistiness and blurriness are created with attention to minute details, by carefully selecting and putting together real architectural systems and elements.

I The “alternative is practised enough to be accepted by a community, and thus become the norm.
These inconspicuous squares under the feet offer the chance for people to claim the street from cars by erecting lightweight structures. Overtime, this appropriation can possibly be ritualized

Column plinths hold various revelries in place. The stable matter of bricks regulates and slows down chaos to be felt by the body as patterns of movement.
Seriousness is cast off on the festive ground Other truths are heard in the form of jokes, gossips, laughter and music.

Section of bio-retention pond
Its dense crown deflect and absorb noise from the crowd. It is also low enough to prevent mist from dispersing too quickly.
The acute awareness of self is suspended in an array of mist, smells and drunkenness
Fuzzy white noise produced by the fog nozzles masks sharper sounds.
On cold mornings, a layer of fog forms over warm pond water. Water evaporates rapidly.
Small water molecules in air soak up some of the sound vibrations and damp down the transmission of sound through the air.
Plants around the pond keeps the mist from dispersing too quickly. They are just tall enough to hide a sitting human.
Perennial grasses are planted on drier soil on the hills. Dense roots of grasses keep soil on the slope in place.
Agrostis Capillaris Dense dry grass rustles in the wind to mask noise from human and vehicle traffic.

Mist renders the unnoticeable movement of air visible. Its whiteness responds to the changing daylight and humidity. Bent grass rustles in the wind and masks the noise of the marching crowd. The white myrtle is covered in a heavy blanket of white blossoms whose sweet scent attracts bees.

Some get distracted on the way to their destinations and forget why they are there in the first place. Bricks disappear into the earth; where things end or begin is not so clear.

III Knowledges of the environment are mobilized and crafted in movement.
Rainwater falls from the canopies into the pebble drain on the street. It flows to the rainwater gardens.
When water level exceeds a certain height, the cleaner rainwater (second flush) overflows and enters the filter planters by the road.
Water on the paved ground either seaps through open joints between bricks or flows to the water channels. It is then guided to the circular retention ponds.
The most contaminated water (first flush) enters the existing city sewage system.
The purified water is reused in the fog system. Water vapour is dispersed to the atmosphere through a high pressure nozzle when the humidity drops and the temperature rises.
The roots of wetland plants delay and clean rainwater before its infiltration through filter soil. The filtered water is collected by pipes underground and stored in the underground cistern.

The concrete basin pauses flowing water to make a calm mirror after a storm. The only suggestion of the passing of time is s subtle ripple under a soft breeze.
The unseen threatens to reveal itself through the sharp mirrored image of the world above. Narcissus saw in the calm pool of water a face not of his own.

Institution
Police & Justice Headquarters Zürich, Switzerland The headquartes is located at the heart of Zürich, next to Main Station and the river Sihlquai. This institution is experienced from within. The order of the institution unfolds itself layer by layer as one enters. Along the axis that connects the Central Station to Klingenpark is a long entrance hall. Through the hall police staff distribute themselves into passages on either sides which lead them to the office spaces. A filigree construction of great depth hovers above the grand space like a cloud. It adds lightness and airiness to the usually tense atmosphere of a government institution. The timber arches branch off to finer filaments that are interwoven together to resemble the canopies of a dense forest and dissolve into the sunlight pouring in from above. A curtain of bronze flutings hang over the facade, continuing the momentum of the filigree roof construction. As if lifting up the curtain of a play, the crowd is drawn into the offices on the ground floor. Tension arises in the mismatch between the actual forces in play and their symbolic representation. To what extent, does the cladding reinforce the indispensible structure and when does it become a charade? The juxtaposition of a real forest of pine trees in the courtyard and the representation of a forest in the interior is a reminder of the neverending inquisition about structural truth. Extension of Schulhaus Stettbach Zürich, Switzerland
Year of construction : 1964 - 1967 Architect : Esther Guyer, Rudolf Guyer Landscape Designer : Willi Neukom
In Schulhaus Stettbach, the architects’ desire to expose truthfully its concrete structure goes against the strict building standards established in 1970s after the oil crisis. While its brutalist quality brings a strong character and unique atmoshere to spaces in the school, it causes thermal and moisture problems due to improper insulation of the building envelope. In the new extension I recreate the unique atmoshere of the existing school building without compromising its building performance. House Vision China at the 15th Venice Architecture Biennale
House of Spontaneity
In Trace Architecture Office, I was part of the team working on China House Vision 2016. Our proposal explores the performative dimension of rituals that endow the spatial and material qualities of the ‘house’ with the personal meaning of ‘home’. House of Spontaneity delves into the ways individual’s routines of habitation shape the definition of a house, and it does so by looking at the fundamental relations among people, modes of living and interior systems. House of Spontaneity features a family of “behavioural objects” designed to accommodate more than one modality of use at the same time. Based on extensive research of visual literature from present and past, the resulting object-systems respond to selected functions performed in the house, like working, sleeping, socializing etc., yet they offer themselves to various recompositions - by way of their different assemblies, give shape to completely individualized domestic universes.
