LONG-RANGE
LONG RANGE LEGACY THE EVOLUTION OF PRECISION OPTICS
THE POPULARITY OF LONG-RANGE SHOOTING HAS SURGED IN RECENT YEARS, AND WITH IT THE DEMAND FOR INNOVATIVE NEW PRODUCTS THAT PUSH THE LIMITS OF ACCURACY AT EXTREME DISTANCES. FOR LEUPOLD LONGRANGE OPTICS, THIS HAS BEEN AN ERA OF EXCEPTIONAL PROGRESS. WE’VE INTRODUCED NEW TECHNOLOGIES, EXPANDED OUR MARK SERIES, AND BROKEN NEW GROUND FOR DISTANCE, PERFORMANCE, AND PRECISION. AND WE’RE JUST GETTING STARTED. Our long history of manufacturing military-grade optics gave us the foundation needed to develop high-performance products that meet the needs of long-range shooters. Of course, we’re not the only optics manufacturer looking to address shooter’s demands, but we bring years of practical experience to the table that other brands can only mimic. Today, most optic brands have a “tactical” scope line, or at least a product with tactical features. But where did the tactical scope come from? Before the early 80s, soldiers were using hunting-style riflescopes in combat. While very functional, the military discovered these optics had their shortcomings. They needed tactical tools customized for combat situations—and they knew just the manufacturer for the job. Our mission was clear: build a riflescope that would outperform anything on the market. The result? The most advanced battlefield-capable scope the military had ever seen – the Ultra. This scope outperformed even the military's expectations and proved that Leupold was the clear choice for battle-ready optics. The Ultra laid the groundwork for what would become Leupold's legendary Mark Series. Since then, the Mark 4, Mark 6, and Mark 8 scope lines were born. And although stringent military requirements resulted in impressive tactical innovations, some features were very specific to their applications and didn’t serve the growing demand for long-range precision optics. The need for a high-performance long-range scope was evident. Enter the Mark 5HD. The Mark 5HD came into existence a different way than its brethren. We took cues and feedback from professional shooters, civilians, and elite-level operators and built a scope that dominates on the range and delivers superior performance on any platform, at any distance. And once the Mark 5HD started to take off, the military took notice and adopted it into several of their weapons systems.

The popularity of the Mark 5HD has soared, but it’s not the only long-range innovation we’ve developed recently. The last visual control shooters have over where the bullet goes is the riflescope, and the reticle is a key tool in maximizing the precision of a shot. Because of the evolution of longrange scopes, long-range specific reticles have also evolved and helped transform the sport. Many shooters are familiar with the Tactical Milling Reticle, or TMR. Born from military needs, the TMR provides hash marks on the horizontal and vertical lines of the crosshairs for accurate holdovers and measuring targets. But shooters wanted more. Next came the grid, or Christmas tree style of reticles. These patterns took the TMR and enhanced it with designs that gave shooters defined aiming points to use for elevation, wind, and bullet drop compensation. Yet, even though these types of reticles remain very useful, some shooters find them too busy or that they cover up too much of the target. We listened to the feedback and developed our Competition Combat Hunter reticle, or CCH. The CCH takes the traditional grid-style reticle and diversifies it. Check out the spec sheet and see why it excels in any environment. From long-range competition shooting to hunting the backcountry, the CCH reticle is relentlessly versatile and deadly accurate.

CORE
One hobby, passion, or activity doesn’t define a person. From the outside looking in, people often look one-dimensional, but experience says this is rarely the case. Jon Pynch is a classic example.

BEHIND THE CORE
JON PYNCH THE MAN BEHIND THE GLASS
JON PYNCH CARRIES A BEVY OF LABELS DEPENDING ON WHAT CROWD YOU RUN WITH. SOME MAY KNOW HIM AS AN ACCOMPLISHED HUNTER, A RENOWNED COMPETITIVE LONG-RANGE SHOOTER, A PODCAST HOST, A DEVOTED FATHER, A SMALL BUSINESS OWNER, OR AN OREGON NATIVE. BUT WE WANTED TO KNOW MORE; WHAT MAKES JON PYNCH TICK? What fascinates you about long-range shooting? A lot of things, but ultimately, I love precision. Only accurate guns are interesting to me, and I love the challenge of figuring out the wind. Placing a first round hit on a long-range target is so satisfying! How does your preparation for a match differ from a hunt? What is the same? When it comes to the gun, preparation for a match and preparation for a hunt are very similar. I want the rifle to be hammering, from load development to drop, everything needs to be perfect. But aside from gun prep, not much is the same. Matches require mental preparation and practice drills, while hunts require getting in shape and making sure all my gear is good to go. What scares you? Failing. I think fear of failure is a big deal because I know great things are often on the other side of failure. As I’ve grown older, I’ve made a point to try and face my fear of failing every chance I get. I'm not good at it yet, but it’s a work in progress. You compete in a lot of NRL and PRS matches – but have you ever wanted to compete in matches like The Mammoth Challenge? I'd love to compete in a variety of competitions, I just need more time. It would be great to shoot more team style matches, Competition Dynamics matches, Mammoth Sniper Challenge, Guardian Long Range matches, etc. But right now, the two biggest, most competitive leagues are the PRS and NRL – so that's where I focus my time. Hopefully I figure out how to fit in more matches at some point. Do your sons shoot with you? Off and on. I never push them to shoot, but when they want to, we’ll break out the .22's and have mini comps between them and their mom. I'm not allowed to compete with them though. My oldest just turned 9 and we're planning a spring bear hunt this year he's really looking forward to. Because of the upcoming hunt, I'll be working with him more through the winter to get him prepared.
11
What is your rifle setup for hunting? I have a handful of hunting guns, but the one that got the nod this year was my 6.5 PRC. Specs are Curtis Custom Axiom action, Mesa Precision Altitude carbon stock, Triggertech Diamond trigger, Proof Research carbon 24" barrel, Area 419 muzzle brake, and a Leupold Mark 5 HD 3.6-18x44 with TMR reticle. If you were a match director, what is the first rule you would enact? I’d do two things: 90 second stages, and tripods must be deployed on the clock. When your long range shooting career is over, what will the next chapter of your life look like? I'm not sure how long I can compete at a high level, so it all depends on that. I've met a lot of great people in this industry, and I'd like to continue to contribute to it for a long time. But the next chapter of my life will focus on family, probably more travel time, and golf. I enjoy golfing and would love to work on it a little more someday. If you could give your younger self a piece of advice, what would it be? Don't be afraid to fail. You learn the most when you do.
Jon Pynch is a renowned long-range competitive shooter and member of Leupold's Pro Team. Pynch is a perennial contender on both the Precision Rifle Series (PRS) and National Rifle League (NRL) circuits – and is the NRL’s reigning champion.

FROM
PREDATOR
TO
PREY
For some, predator hunting is an exciting way to bridge the gap between big game seasons and extend their time in the field. For others, it’s an obsession. Either way, hunting predators helps control the population, protect livestock, manage wildlife, and ensure the future of a healthy ecosystem. It’s also highly addictive.

PREDATOR HUNTING
PREDATOR HUNTING BASICS ADVICE FOR NEW PREDATOR HUNTERS
THERE ARE FEW EXPERIENCES MORE ADDICTING THAN CALLING A COYOTE IN. THE CHALLENGE OF OUTWITTING A SKILLED PREDATOR ON THEIR HOME TURF PROVIDES A THRILL THAT MOST HUNTERS CAN’T SHAKE. Coyotes live in every corner of North America, from deep in the wilderness to rural communities and major metropolitan cities. Capable of adapting to nearly any environment, their growing population makes hunting these predators a very popular, and very necessary, sport among hunters. Like any hunting or shooting sport, predator hunting can be intimidating to break into if you’re new. But it doesn’t have to be. With the right gear and a little guidance, you’ll be hooked in no time. If you want to start hunting coyotes, then the following guide will help you get started. GEARED FOR THE HUNT New to predator hunting? Chances are, you already have everything you need. Basic gear – aside from a rifle – includes a bi-pod or shooting-sticks, strong lights with extra batteries, camouflage, an electric call, and an optic that suits the terrain. Coyotes typically bed down during the day and hunt at night, so the optic you use will vary depending on the hunt. Daytime hunts require lightweight gear as you are mobile, moving from spot to spot to find where the animals are bedded down. A low-power, lightweight scope like the VX-3i 2.5-8x36mm works well for day hunts; the wide field-of-view and lighter setup make for easier shots in heavy vegetation and close encounters. For nighttime hunts, use a high-power optic with a large objective, like the VX-6HD 4-24x52mm. The higher magnification helps with accurate identifications in the dark. When you see eyes at 300 yards out, you need to get a good look at the animal to ensure proper identification, and to determine how to call them in and position yourself. SETUP FOR SUCCESS The type of setup you use depends personal preference and terrain. Some hunters set up in a high-rack loaded into the bed of a truck, others walk in and sit, while some post up in a tree stand. Regardless of the setup you choose, it should always cater to two things: wind and visibility. Coyotes are masters at keeping out of sight, especially when stalking prey, so having 360o of visibility increases your odds of seeing them approach. But setting up in a place with good visibility is only half the equation. Most predators will circle downwind before coming in to a call, so it’s vital to pay attention to the crosswind and always have a set of eyes downwind. A predator’s nose is unbeatable, so don’t try to fool them. Instead, use their cautious behavior to your advantage. Set up in a spot that forces them to
15
cross an opening if they want to circle downwind of the call – this gives you the opportunity for a shot before they wind you. How long you sit and how far you move between stands depend on the terrain. Coyotes travel large distances and have exceptional hearing, so it’s best to space your setups a mile or more apart when hunting in open country, or just around the next hill when hunting in mountainous terrain. Typically, coyotes come in within the first 10 minutes of calling, so each stand should last no more than 15 minutes. TALK THE TALK Calling is an acquired skill; the more you do it, the better you get. Most electric calls have a wide selection of sounds to pick from, but if you don’t know where to begin, start by listening and then mimicking what you hear. For coyotes, there are three moods you can appeal to: hunger, curiosity, and territorial anger. A skilled hunter can evoke each of these through a progression of calls, luring in even the most wily predator. The trick to calling in coyotes is to understand their seasonal habits: Every season brings a new set of motivations and knowing these motivations will help you call more effectively. In the fall, coyotes gain weight to prepare for the winter months; use distress calls to appeal to their hunger. During the winter, finding food and defending their territory matter most; appeal to their hunger and anger with a series of distress calls that start out quiet and grow louder, ending with a howl. This combination alerts nearby coyotes that there is food in the area and a coyote encroaching on their territory. Spring is breeding season, the time when howling is critical. Effective calls include male challenge howls, female invitation howls, or pair howls. Your calls should appeal to either a single male looking to mate, or a male and female pair looking to pick a fight. TIPS Don’t stop calling after you shoot, chances are a second coyote will come in after the first. Coyotes hunt in loose pairs, especially in the spring, and aren’t always spooked by the sound of gunshots. So keep calling. If you see a second coyote take off, then you can stop them with a submissive call, like a pup in distress or a whimper, giving you the opportunity for a second shot. Use your light! Many new and experienced predator hunters don’t use their light enough. Instead of using it intermittently, which can spook off animals, use your light constantly. By leaving the light on, predators become comfortable with it from a distance and it will make it much easier to spot incoming animals. Light also serves as incredible camouflage. Animals can’t see anything behind the light if you keep it in their eyes, which gives you the freedom to move around and prepare for the shot.

MOUNTING
MistakeS You can spend thousands on a scope and rifle, log countless hours at the reloading bench tweaking your load, painstakingly sight-in until everything is dead-on, and have it all go up in smoke because your mounting system failed at the moment of truth. Or, you can follow these tips and trust your shot of a lifetime to Leupold.

20
MOUNTING MISTAKES
MOUNTING 101 COMMON MISTAKES TO AVOID
21
YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE A PROFESSIONAL GUNSMITH TO MOUNT YOUR RIFLESCOPE CORRECTLY, BUT YOU DO HAVE TO PAY ATTENTION. The scope is the most vital component of long-range accuracy. Improper mounting can lead to a variety of consequences, including damage to the maintube and internal components, missed targets, and shooter injury from the scope. The best way to prevent these issues and guarantee accuracy is to mount the scope yourself. With a little attention to detail, mounting a scope is not as challenging as it seems. It’s a great skill to have and, when done correctly, proves invaluable in the field. But, as with any process, there are key steps you need to get right. We asked an expert to share the most common mistakes people make when mounting their optics and how to avoid them. As Chief of Range Operations at Leupold and one of our best internal resources for mounting scopes and diagnosing performance issues, Colby Ingram takes mounting pretty seriously. With a job that requires mounting 30-50 scopes per week, it’s no surprise he knows exactly what to do and, more importantly, what not to do. Here are Colby’s top mounting tips.
1
BEWARE OF TORQUE Over-torqueing screws is an easy mistake to make, especially when you want your mount secure enough to withstand heavy recoil. But exceeding maximum torque can cause internal and external damage to the scope and potentially limit the mounting system’s performance. A good rule-of-thumb is to never turn a screw or bolt so tight that the tool you’re using damages the screw slot or hex hole. If you’re serious about setting up your system correctly, then you need a torque wrench. A torque wrench ensures the mounts are secure without the risk of overtightening or having your screwdriver jump out of the slot and damage your rifle.
2
DON’T LAP RINGS Lapping is an age-old process that prevents rings from torqueing the scope by increasing their surface contact with the maintube. However, with today’s technology and manufacturing processes, most rings don’t require lapping. In fact, lapping can turn round rings into ovals, creating gaps and putting detrimental pressure on parts of the maintube, which can potentially damage your scope. If you purchase a Leupold mounting system for your scope, trust that it’s machined to fit like a glove and lapping is not advised.
3
QUALITY COUNTS Mounts are the foundation to any accurate shooting system, functioning as the crucial bond between the rifle and scope. But after spending $1500 on a rifle and another $1200 on a scope, it’s understandable to want to save a little on a mounting system. Except quality performance requires quality mounts, and in this sport, you get what you pay for. I encourage shooters to view their mounting system as much of an investment as the rest of their equipment. Why? Because without a solid foundation, an expensive optic simply won’t perform.
4
ONE SIZE DOES NOT FIT ALL Correctly mounting a riflescope is 100% shooter dependent. No two people are built the same – for proper alignment, always account for the shooters body type. Letting someone else mount your scope is like letting a friend borrow your car; when you get it back all the mirrors are wrong and your feet don’t touch the pedals. It’s best to learn how to mount your own optics so your setup is tailored to you. From where your cheek rests on the stock to the amount of eye relief you need, the only person who can mount your scope correctly is you. But if you still need help, make sure you are present so it is adjusted to meet your needs.
5
LEVEL UP A properly mounted scope is level to the rifle. To achieve a proper mount, you need a leveling kit and you need to know how to use it. Many people put the level on top of the adjustment dial to square the scope to the action, but there is a better way. Instead of putting the level on top of the dial, remove the cap and put the level on the adjustment post. By using the adjustment post, you ensure the scope is truly level to the action, allowing you to shoot with total accuracy.
As our Chief Range Officer, Colby over-sees all range operations and training. His life-long passion for hunting and shooting has given him a wealth of knowledge, making him an infinitely valuable resource.

SPRING VENISON CUTLETS Whether you’re around a campfire or in your kitchen at home, this Spring Venison Cutlet recipe is a quick, fresh meal that’s sure to impress and satisfy everyone’s taste buds.
INGREDIENTS SOUR CREAM SMASHED POTATOES • 1 lb. baby yellow potatoes • 3 tbsp butter • ¼ cup sour cream • 1 tsp salt CUTLETS • 1 lb. venison hind leg muscle. Substitute turkey breast, grouse breast, elk, etc. • Preferred seasoning salt • Fresh ground pepper • 2 tbsp oil ROASTED MORELS AND ASPARAGUS • 1 tbsp oil • 4 oz morels, cleaned, halved, and stems removed. Substitute any mushroom of choice. • 8 oz asparagus, 1.5-2” slices • 2 cloves garlic, thinly sliced • 2 tbsp butter • 1 small bunch of spring onions or chives, 1” chopped • 3-4 sprigs of thyme Serves 2
29
MEAL PREP INSTRUCTIONS SOUR CREAM SMASHED POTATOES • Place the potatoes into a pot, cover with water, season with two pinches of salt and simmer until cooked. Approximately 15-20 minutes. • Strain the potatoes and crush them with a fork in a bowl. Keep them slightly chunky. • Mix the butter, salt, and sour cream into the potatoes. • Taste and adjust the seasoning as you see fit. • Keep in a warm place until ready to serve. CUTLETS, MORELS, AND ASPARAGUS • Clean the meat and cut against the grain into 1” thick cutlets. Place between two layers of saran wrap. • Use a mallet or a flat, heavy object to pound out the cutlets to 3/4” thick. • Heat a heavy-bottom pan over medium high heat. • Season both sides of the cutlets with salt and pepper. • Add the oil to the pan. When it begins to smoke, sear the cutlets on both sides so they are brown and cooked to your desired doneness. If necessary, work in batches so the pan doesn’t get crowded. • Place the cutlets in a warm spot. • Wipe out the pan, add 1 tbsp of fresh oil and place over medium heat. • When the oil smokes, add the morels and sauté for 60-90 seconds. • Season the morels with salt and add the asparagus and butter to the pan. • Sauté for another 90 seconds. Add the sliced garlic, remaining tablespoon of butter, and toss and cook until the garlic browns. • Add the chopped chives and cutlets back into the pan and toss. • Pluck the thyme leaves from the sprigs, add to the pan, and serve. CRITICAL POINTS • Taste all the components as you cook them and adjust the seasoning to your personal preferences. Simple dishes like this need great seasoning. Always taste and adjust. • Adjust the time and temperature as you need. If the asparagus is burning before it’s cooked, turn down the heat, etc. • This recipe calls for the cutlets, morels, and asparagus to be cooked in the same pan, but it can be cooked separately if you prefer. • Resting cooked meat is very important! This allows the juices to relax in the meat and results in a more even cook. Keep the meat very warm during the resting and reheat it gently before serving if needed.

SPECIAL FEATURES
Knowing your average shooting distance helps determine which magnification range is right for you.
Prices are primarily based on the versatility of the optic’s magnification range and light management system.
Features like the Custom Dial System (CDS) and illumination can affect the price and functionality of the scope.
VISIT LEUPOLD.COM/OPTICSFINDER TO FIND THE LEUPOLD THAT’S RIGHT FOR YOU. 37
WATERPROOFING AND FOGPROOFING From torrential downpours to crossing rivers, you’ll never have to worry about a Leupold scope leaking or fogging up. Our proprietary gas blend and seals are tested to a 33-foot depth and a multitude of pressure changes.
BUILT FOR A LIFETIME Our optics are tested under the harshest conditions to make sure you can use them under the harshest conditions, without fail.
IMPACT TESTED AND VERIFIED We purpose built a machine to replicate the most extreme impact signature imaginable. The actual rifle doesn’t exist, but if it did, and you shot it, you would instantly regret it. You would be knocked unconscious, suffer a concussion, burst blood vessels in your eyes, and detach your retinas. Every scope we make, from a $200 VX-Freedom, to our $4500 Mark 8 has to survive 5000 impacts at this energy, all while retaining its functionality and holding a perfect zero.
EXTREME CLIMATE EXPOSURE We make sure our optics perform at the highest level in the harshest conditions by ensuring they will survive from -40 degrees Fahrenheit all the way up to 160 degrees Fahrenheit.
