WATERPROOFING AND FOGPROOFING
IMPACT TESTED AND VERIFIED
EXTREME CLIMATE EXPOSURE
From torrential downpours to crossing rivers, you’ll never have to worry about a Leupold scope leaking or fogging up. Our proprietary gas blend and seals are tested to a 33-foot depth and a multitude of pressure changes.
Each scope design has to survive 5,000 impacts on the Punisher, Leupold’s recoil simulation machine. The force of each impact is 3x the recoil of a .308 rifle. If the scope doesn’t perform in any way during the tests, we make adjustments to the design and test it again.
We make sure our optics perform at the highest level in the harshest conditions by ensuring they will survive from -40 degrees Fahrenheit all the way up to 160 degrees Fahrenheit.

WHITETAIL
PLAN YOUR STAND TREESTAND TIPS FROM THE DRURY BROTHERS
MARK AND TERRY DRURY, FOUNDERS OF DRURY OUTDOORS, HAVE OVER 60 YEARS OF COMBINED PROFESSIONAL HUNTING EXPERIENCE AND LAND MANAGEMENT KNOW-HOW. WE’VE ASKED THEM TO SHARE THEIR KNOWLEDGE ON HOW TO SUCCESSFULLY HUNT WHITETAIL FROM A TREESTAND AND WHAT MISTAKES TO AVOID. Planning your treestand is a critical part of a successful hunt. It’s more than getting out there early enough and sitting there long enough. It’s the details that count. What does the wind do around your stand throughout the day? When do the deer move past your stand, and when do their habits change? The more you understand the habits of the animals you hunt and the environment you’re setting up in, the higher chance you’ll have at success. When planning your stand this season, consider these factors and avoid making common mistakes that can lead to you going home empty-handed.
PLAN AHEAD: IT’S ALL IN THE DETAILS ENVIRONMENT Stand placement is vital to your success. When looking for a treestand location, consider the habits of the game you’re hunting. One thing we’ve learned from years of patterning the deer on our ranch is that older-class bucks tend to go to water before they go to feed. The trick is to learn their movements and hunt when you know they'll be in the area. Wherever you plan to place your treestand, make sure that the wind is in your favor. Know the climate around your stand throughout the day - maybe the wind shifts in the evenings, making it ideal to hunt early mornings only, or vice versa. Playing the wind is the most important aspect of successfully hunting from a treestand. If you keep track of when the animals move and when the wind is in your favor, you will increase your odds of filling your freezer this season. APPROACH The number one mistake hunters make is walking directly to their stand. Hunting from a treestand isn’t always about sitting for hours waiting for the deer to come along. Often, deer are already in the area and might spook at the sound, sight, or smell of you. Luckily, we’ve found a way to help decrease your presence and increase your odds.
7
The first step to making your treestand approach-friendly is to plant an abundance of warm-season grasses around the area. Once full-grown, the grasses will stand 6-feet high. The next step is to mow a zig-zag path to your stand, making sure it’s downwind of where you’re hunting. Make the switchbacks 20-30 yards long with slow and lazy curves in areas where you’re certain deer are unlikely to approach from. The mowed grass gives you a quiet path to walk on, and the tall grasses conceal your shape and confine your scent, allowing you to reach your stand quickly, easily, and undetected.
MISTAKES TO AVOID It’s one thing to place your stand in an area where deer pass and the wind is in your favor, but also be aware of where your scent will travel. We advise having a scent catch - some sort of large ditch or open meadow that deer don’t feed in. These open spaces catch your scent and allow it to quickly dissipate without alerting nearby deer of your location. Another mistake to avoid is hanging your stand immediately before the season starts. Your scent can linger and spook your potential trophy. If possible, hang your stand months in advance, ideally on a hot day when rain is expected in the evening. The heat helps evaporate your scent, while the rain washes any remaining scent. When deciding on a tree to hang your stand from, never chose a forward-leaning tree. Ideally, a tree with a slight backward bend makes for the most comfortable post while you wait on your deer. Also, make sure there are plenty of branches behind you to help break up your silhouette. Finally, don’t forget to always bring a small spray bottle of scent-free spray to use as a liquid lubricant for squeaks in your stand.

RANGEFINDERS
DOMINATE AT ANY DISTANCE UNLOCK THE FULL POTENTIAL OF YOUR RANGEFINDER
Rangefinders, in one form or another, have been around since the 18th century. But with the evolution of laser technology, modern rangefinders perform better than ever before. Over time, units have decreased in size and increased in speed and accuracy. And with the overwhelming number of rangefinders on the market today, it's difficult to decide which one is right for you. At Leupold, we know that distance matters but so does how you measure it. Aside from calibrating, stabilizing, and focusing your rangefinder, understanding all of its built-in features will help you unlock its full potential so you can fill your freezer this season. Here are the most important aspects to consider when purchasing a new model.
TRUE BALLISTICS VS. RIFLEMAN’S RULE Ballistic rangefinders are designed to compensate for the drop of your bullet at different yardages. Hunt long enough, and you will encounter a long distance shot with an uphill or downhill angle. That’s when true ballistics matter most. There are a few ways to solve the ballistic drop, but the following two are the most common. • Rifleman’s Rule is a popular way to solve for bullet drop using trigonometry. This static mathematical formula provides a shoot-to distance but will only get you so far. It fails to consider all aspects of your shot, from the ballistics of your round to the shot angle. If you use Rifleman’s Rule to calculate the ballistic drop on a 600-yard shot, there will be a margin of error that could put your round 10-15 inches low – the difference between tagging out or going home empty-handed. • True Ballistic Range (TBR) uses the most accurate ballistic formula possible. Our TBR technology is one of the most accurate ways of calculating ballistic drop at long ranges. Because when you’re looking to take a shot of a lifetime, there’s no room for error. SOFT TARGETS VS. REFLECTIVE TARGETS In the rangefinder world, there’s a race to print the farthest distance on the box. Some models claim up to 5000 yards or more, but don’t be fooled. Not all rangefinders are created equal. Many different engine technologies help determine how far a unit can range, but it ultimately depends on the target surface.
13
Reflective targets, like signs, cars, or white paper, are easily ranged at long distances, giving manufacturers a chance to boast bigger numbers. But what they fail to mention is that in the real world, you won’t be ranging reflective targets. Sure, you can range a stop sign at 4000 yards, but we’re willing to bet there aren’t many stop signs where you’re shooting. Soft targets, like animals, trees, rocks, and even steel plates, are much more challenging to range at a distance. Which is why hunters and shooters need a rangefinder specifically designed to perform on soft targets at long distances, not reflective ones. For example, our RX-2800 TBR/W rangefinder boasts a 2800-yard reflective distance performance. But what’s impressive is that it can range out to 2400 yards on trees, rocks, and steel targets, and 1800 yards on animals. These real-world stats outperform other rangefinders that might have a higher reflective distance but struggle with soft targets. So don’t get distracted by big numbers - dig a little deeper and make sure the unit will do what you need it to do when it matters most.
LIGHT TRANSMISSION AND DISPLAYS It’s no surprise that maximum distance takes center stage when weighing the features of a rangefinder. But you can’t range what you can’t see. And with increased distance capabilities, clarity and brightness are more important than ever - yet, often overlooked. Light transmission and display type play a significant role in how your rangefinder performs throughout the day, from poor weather and low light to ranging long distances. When it comes to clear, bright images, we’ve applied the same standard that we use for our riflescopes to our rangefinders. There are a few types of displays available that determine how bright the image will be. Our OLED displays deliver 85% light transmission, while our other models with the high-contrast LCD deliver 65% light transmission. The display color is also an important factor for many people. Our OLED displays are red, while the LCD is black, so you can range with confidence no matter what conditions you’re in. As always, it’s a good idea to try them out for yourself to find which one works best for you. No matter what features you’re looking for in a rangefinder, Leupold has a model for you.

WE KNOW WHO YOU ARE. YOU’RE RELENTLESS JUST LIKE US. YOU PUSH YOURSELF TO THE LIMITS ON THE BATTLEFIELD, IN COMPETITION, AND ON THE HUNT. SO WHY NOT PUSH THE LIMITS OF YOUR TRAINING TOO? The only way to make someone a better shot is to get them out of their comfort zone. One of the joys of being a precision rifle match director is thinking of ways to get people out of their comfort zones by putting them into difficult and unusual positions. The goal is to test a shooter’s ability to adapt to any obstacle or complex course of fire imaginable. It may seem intimidating on the surface, and it should. Putting yourself under real stress and then delivering real performance, good or bad, is the key to making you a better all-around shooter. Too often we go to the range, methodically lay out our gear, and get ourselves into perfect shooting position before sending rounds down range. Although this routine has its place, it doesn’t prepare you for real-world conditions. When shooting in a competition or in the field, you need to be just as confident in unpredictable terrain and circumstances as you are during a routine day at the range. Luckily, it doesn’t take much to begin training. All you need are some items you likely have laying around your garage and a little bit of space at your house. That’s right, there’s no need to go to the range - you can improve your shooting without leaving home. Here are 5 easy-to-build obstacles that are guaranteed to make you a better shot, whether it’s for your next national level match or a once in a lifetime hunt. Note – while you can absolutely use these obstacles during live fire practice, for this demonstration we’re dry firing. It’s extremely important to remove any live ammunition from the immediate area beforehand and to thoroughly check your rifle to make sure it’s unloaded.

SHOOTING SKILLS
OBSTACLE CHALLENGES GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR TRAINING
1
RATCHET TIE-DOWN Tie-downs have limitless uses, from an impromptu slack line to keeping the hood closed on your 1986 Corolla (because you spend all your money on guns). Better yet, you can also use a tie-down as an unstable surface for hours of valuable reps. The instability of the strap replicates obstacles you might find at a match, so if you get good at shooting off a strap, a barricade or T-post will be a walk in the park.
2
5-GALLON BUCKET Chances are you probably have a 5-gallon bucket laying around somewhere. It’s time to put it to good use. When set on its side, a 5-gallon bucket creates a very challenging surface to shoot from. Try taking three 5-gallon buckets, flip them upside down, and stack them in a pyramid. This provides you with a shaky position at an awkward height so you can practice getting steady.
3
STEP LADDER There are limitless challenges you can create with a simple step ladder, but the real value is in practicing transitions between positions. If you want to be more competitive, then you need to be more agile, more fluid, and more confident in your movements. Try moving your rifle from rung to rung to get used to repositioning at different heights. Mastering these transitions will pay dividends on the course.
4
TRIPOD Tripods are an essential piece of gear for any serious shooter or hunter. You can shoot off them, glass, spot, use as a rear support, and even hang your gear off them. You can also grab a shooting bag, throw it on top, and now you have an easy-to-setup support that can replicate numerous real-world positions like shooting off rocks or fences.
5
STORAGE BOXES Those boxes of holiday decorations in your garage now have a second purpose. When it comes to storage boxes, the sky is the limit. Stack them up to imitate shooting off the hood of a vehicle, or create a wall with small openings like you’d encounter on a barrier. If the position doesn’t feel challenging enough, you’re doing it wrong. Push your limits and your shooting will improve.

HOME DEFENSE
YOUR
29
MENTAL PREPARATION IS YOUR BEST WEAPON. BUT TRIED-AND-TRUE LEUPOLD RELIABILITY CAN ALSO HELP KEEP YOU AND YOUR FAMILY SAFE TONIGHT. No one wants to be the victim of a crime, but the truth is, crime is everywhere. And the best way to keep yourself from being victimized is to be prepared. Let’s start with some statistics from the U.S. Department of Justice: •
One property crime happens every 4 seconds
•
One burglary occurs every 20 seconds
•
38% of assaults and 60% of rapes occur during home invasions
•
Over 2 million homes will experience a break-in or burglary this year
•
There are 4,500 home burglaries per day in the U.S.
Those facts are sobering, to say the least. But with a little bit of training, you can avoid falling victim to one of these crimes. When it comes to home-defense tactics, there are plenty of opinions out there, but one expert worth listening to is Drew Estell. As the owner and operator of BAER Solutions, one of the foremost training companies in America, Drew uses his past military and special operations experience to help train and educate shooters from around the world. He’s an Army Special Forces veteran who specialized in military free-fall operations, and he has completed numerous deployments to the Middle East where he led direct action missions, trained foreign special operation forces, and gathered human intelligence. Read on for what Drew has to say about home-defense and his preferred tactics to help keep him and his family safe.
30
HOME DEFENSE
You don’t have to be a Special Forces, SWAT, or a SEAL to defend your home. Understanding some simple concepts can help you prepare for the worst.
1
VISUALIZE AND PRACTICE WITH DISCIPLINE Before an incident ever happens, you can prepare for almost anything through visualization. Pro athletes visualize success all of the time, and I can’t think of a better scenario where your performance will matter more. Heading to your kid's room to put them to bed? Count how many steps it takes to get there and commit it memory. This will help if you ever need to sweep your house in the dark. Going through a doorway? Practice slicing the pie, which means peeking around the corners from a safe distance methodically without exposing too much of yourself at one time. Late at night, I’ll visualize what I would do if I saw someone on the back patio. How long would it take me to recognize if it was a break-in? How much time it would take to get to my kid’s room? It takes discipline to visualize and practice without becoming a liability to the situation. Ultimately, you have to live with the outcome of any situation, so consider things like bullet path if a shooting is to occur, your confidence in a “low percentage” shot if you have to take it, understanding your home layout, always having muzzle and trigger discipline, your ability to identify targets, and knowing your state laws on the use of force. Keeping these things in mind as you prepare will help them become instinctual if you’re ever faced with an incident.
2
STOP THE KILLING There are two ways to respond to a home invasion. Deliberate and directed threat. Deliberate means that you’re not sure exactly what’s going on, so you need to take deliberate actions and check everything to better understand the situation and know if and when it’s okay. Directed threat means you have information to process like the sound of gunfire, screaming as if someone’s life is in danger, or anything else that tells you that the loss of life or serious bodily harm is imminent. In this instance, the number one priority is getting to that source in order to stop the killing. When time is of the essence, don’t be distracted by unnecessary inputs. You shouldn’t be as worried about the living room if there is a directed threat down the hallway toward a loved one’s room. You need to get to that room and start solving problems. Time + space = opportunity.
31
3
USE SPACE AND ANGLES TO YOUR ADVANTAGE As with any discussion on clearing rooms, we must first understand our audience. While a 4-person SWAT team might prefer to not get bottle-necked in a hallway, it might be the safest place for a single person in a home invasion - you only have two directions where a threat can approach you from as opposed to a large room with more space. As for angles, work on clearing as much of the room as you can from the doorway. Like I mentioned earlier, when working your angles, think in straight lines when you’re slicing the pie. Instead of getting sucked into the corner of the door frame where you’re forced to arc your way around it to see inside, stand back from the entryway. Slowly move to the side while peeking into the room from a safe distance. Try to be at least an arm’s length away to make sure you’re not getting sucked in too tightly.
4
CONSIDER YOUR ENVIRONMENT You can only shoot as fast as you can see, and, of course, you can’t shoot what you can’t see. Shadows, lighting, and sounds all give you information about what the intruder is doing and where they are. For obvious reasons, I recommend mounting a light onto your weapon. This illuminates your target so you can be sure it’s a threat or not. But always remember that if the light is on your weapon, your muzzle will always be pointed where the light is pointed. This means that trigger discipline is paramount. Many people don’t take into consideration how lighting can telegraph your movements. Your light will give away your location. Also, if you’re backlit and start to pie off a doorway, your entire silhouette will be visible to those in a dark room. Pay attention to your environment and know how you should use that information during an incident. Remember what your kid’s steps sound like coming down the hall compared to your dog’s or an adult’s. Know where the light switches are and how much silhouetting any nightlights might be creating. Taking the extra time to learn your environment now will pay off when you need it most.
