Site / Location Jan Shrem & Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art UC Davis Gateway District
Objective To develop and brand the visual identity of the Jan Shrem & Maria Manetti Shrem Museum of Art. Additionally, to strategically apply brand and visual identity across museum signage to allow first time visitors and frequent visitors to easily navigate throughout museum site.
Background The Jan Shrem & Maria Manetti Shrem Musem of Art seeks a strong visual identity as a newly established fine arts organization within UC Davis’ Gateway District community. The goal is to create a strong visual identity that will be applied across wayfinding systems that help people easily find their way, identify locations, and leaves a long lasting impact of museum brand. This project seeks to define seven different sign types including: identification, orientation, directional, information, regulatory, celebratory, and interpretive signs.
Users & Audience Users and audiences include: + University students + Alumni + Art enthusiasts + Davis community members + Staff and faculty + and more..
Summary

Site / Architecture Above are studies and renderings of the proposed architecture and site of the Shrem Museum of Art. The museum architecture is influenced by the play of light, shadow, and curves. The Grand Canopy is the architecture’s distinguishing feature that slopes down to cover the front of the site. The canopy is made of triangular infill beams that plays with light and shadow.
“The canopy acts as fourth pavilion; an engaged threshold of work and play, of campus and museum.” Vancey Le + Leslie Luo DES186 | Winter 14

UC Davis Artist Legacy UC Davis’ has a strong legacy of the arts. The works pictured above are a combination of works by Wayne Theibald, Robert Arneson, William T. Wiley, and Bruce Nauman. While each individual’s styles are very different, the interplay of color and playfulness is truly distinctive to UC Davis. The identity is inspired partly by the artistic legacy of these artists and artists work not displayed above.
4
Museum Fine Art Collection Above are current works in the Richard L. Nelson Gallery fine arts collection at UC Davis. These are the potential works of arts displayed at the Shrem Museum of Art and serves as a reference/inspiration for content.

Museum Branding Above are current and conceptual branding materials, imagery, and signage . A few are reconfigurable such as the Brooklyn Museum, LACMA, Harvard Art, and Plymouth University. Others are altered type logo marks such as Tate, Tribeca Film Festival, Asian Art Museum, and New York Museum of Glass. Each of these inspirations are playful in its own way and focuses on its everchanging landscape (on print, as signage, and more).

Logo The logo represents the architecture of the museum itself while bringing an unexpectedly bold punch. It reflects the fine art legacy of Davis that the museum exists in. The tinted and overlapping letters of the logo communicates the blurring of light that interacts with the museum’s Grand Canopy and interior. The offset of the type invites viewers to engage, interact, and interpret the piece with
Name The logo text lockup of “Shrem Museum of Art” is preferred to provide emphasis on the Shrem family and context of what the building houses. While the museum is relatively new, the addition of “of Art” can later be omitted once the organization’s branding has been well established.

Optima Regular ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz 0123456789
Typography Futura Std Bold The font is bold and legible allowing viewers to easily take in information. The font is meant to complement Optima Regular by enhancing its curves and Humanist aspects.
8
Optima Regular While UC Davis as an institution utilizes Futura UC Davis and Berkeley to distinguish itself as a professional thought leader, the Shrem Museum of Art is more flexible. Optima is a Humanist font with subtle curves. The type reflects the straight and curved features of the architecture. It is a sophisticated and elegant typeface that works well with other serif and sans-serif typefaces.

Visual Identity Color The colors used within the logo draw from various artists within the UC Davis community that represent the art legacy of Davis. The colors are vibrant to enhance the playfulness of the museum’s brand and direction. The vibrant and striking colors allow the museum to stand out in a positive, modern, and playful way against the lightness and translucent qualities of the architecture.

Sign Locations Above are the proposed sign locations. Heavy consideration was given towards orientation, flow of entry, and providing for the best experience possible for individuals coming to the museum whether it’s a first experience or many experiences after that. Deliberate placement of signs are placed around the perimeter and entrance facing Vanderhoef Quad to complement other buildings in the Gateway district and as identifying markers for the museum itself.
